It's foolish to even imagine him wearing lifts. Watch They Where Expendable. Wayne towers over 6' Robert Montgomery.

What difference does it make whether or not Wayne wore lifts? He was a "giant" of men! He brought acting to great "heights",

James, give it up. You're full of it.
James said on 19/Jul/16
You can tell Wayne was wearing lifts in "The Sons of Katie Elder" in the long shot of him walking towards the camera.

Kirk Douglas wasn't actually that complimentary about Wayne until long after his death. He only worked with him because his career had declined so much after "Spartacus".
Tom said on 18/Jul/16
James, you might be able to tell, but no one else can.

George Raft was hated by those who worked with him. Kirk Douglas, God bless him, was not very popular with those he worked with because he was reportedly a pain to work with. But Douglas, a very strong liberal Democrat, really respected Wayne. The two worked well together. Wayne had the highest respect for Douglas who is amazing. The man will probably live to be 100! I had the pleasure of meeting him many years ago when he was signing a book he wrote. He was extremely nice.
James said on 18/Jul/16
Most people outside Hollywood had never heard of Cohn. Wayne was the most hated man in Hollywood due to his support for the illegal US involvement in an unwinnable war in Vietnam.
Arch Stanton said on 18/Jul/16
Harry Cohn and George Raft would have been more widely disliked than Wayne!!

Tom said on 16/Jul/16
James is ignorant. If Wayne was the most hated person outside Hollywood, then how come he ranked at the top for drawing people into movie theaters? And for decades! As for being hated the most in Hollywood, that's utter nonsense. He was extremely well liked. But more importantly, he was respected.

James, do us all a big favor by taking your political views to a political forum. Politics has nothing to do with a person's height.
James said on 15/Jul/16
He lost height as he aged, especially after having a lung and two ribs removed.

Lifts are not invisible. In order to have a padded insert, the sides of the shoe must be higher, sometimes by an inch or more. The angle of the foot changes.
James said on 13/Jul/16
Most people outside Hollywood had never heard of Curtiz or Cohn, but they knew Wayne. His infamous support for blacklisting, McCarthy, the Iranian and Guatemalan coup d'etats, the Korean War, the Bay of Pigs invasion, the Vietnam War, Nixon, the Watergate coverup etc ensured he was hated more than any other movie actor.
Arch Stanton said on 13/Jul/16
The Sons of Katie Elder is another Wayne film where he looked taller than 6'4. In some scenes in that he looked more 6'5-6'6. Dean Martin wore lifts in that film, I suspect that most of the cast did.
Arch Stanton said on 13/Jul/16
In his films where he wore dress shoes, I've never seen any evidence of Wayne wearing lifts. I certainly don't think he was a habitual lift wearer, but as I say, in some westerns I do think it's possible he had an extra boost. As I say he made Dean Martin look 5 ft 8 range in some scenes in Rio Bravo and in the Fighting Kentuckian made 5'11.5-6' Oliver Hardy look 5'10.5-5'11. He looked 6 ft 5 with Oliver Hardy. And Dean Martin usually wore lifts in his films, most of the films of his I've seen he's obviously wearing lifts. You can't say that about Wayne.
Arch Stanton said on 13/Jul/16
"Tom said on 10/Jul/16
John Wayne never wore lifts. "

How can you be so certain? I've not seen any PROOF that Wayne wore lifts, but we also can't be certain he didn't boost his height in s few films. A lot of actors wore lift cowboy boots in westerns to look more imposing. It's not impossible that Wayne wore bigger boots in some films to look even bigger. Doesn't really matter. The point is that he was genuinely close to 6'4 legitimately.
Tom said on 12/Jul/16
You're proof, James?

I believe lots of people were hated more. Take director Michael Curtiz. He was despised by most actors who worked in one of the many features he directed. And no one was more hated than Columbia Pictures chief Harry Cohn.
James said on 12/Jul/16
Lifts are invisible on the outside. No photographs were allowed of Wayne breathing through an oxygen mask after 1964, or riding a trailer when his stunt double rode over a fence at the end of "True Grit".
James said on 11/Jul/16
Wayne was actually the most hated person in Hollywood.
Tom said on 10/Jul/16
John Wayne never wore lifts. It started out as a joke that was taken to extreme levels of lunacy by people who couldn't stand his politics. And which director said he wore lifts? Show us proof. And please post photos showing him wearing lifts. You'll discover you can't because they don't exist. And no, there is no such thing as invisible lifts.
Arch Stanton said on 10/Jul/16
Wayne genuinely was near 6'4 I think, I've seen probably 75% of his films and looked it in every film except The Big Trail. But given that a major part of his image was being a man mountain figure, I do believe that in some of his westerns he added some extra height just to look that imposing. He did have a thing about size, and that was a major part of who he was, so him occasionally wearing boots with a lift isn't impossible. But he was too big to have only been 6'2 flat.

The Duke is one of my all time favorite actors (and I even share many of his political views. I mean Wayne was an old school conservative, not extremists of any kind), but reading some of these comments are…interesting to say at least. I mean it’s interesting to see that there still exists some kind of a fan denial over the fact that John Wayne indeed did wear lifts. It’s not just some ”joke” Robert Mitchum told, but many actors and directors have said it about Wayne. And there is nothing wrong with that – many actors of all heights wears lifts as we know. That’s Hollywood. Past and present.

As for his real height, I cannot be sure how tall John Wayne was, but I’m guessing 6ft 2” is about right. (6' 4" figures are with lifts or set-up). IIRC his son said that Wayne was 6-2.

You can't be much of a fan then. He was barefoot in the Shootist and still looking at least 6'3. And in flat boat shoes, no lifts with 6'1.5 Lee Marvin in Donovan's Reef and looking 6'4 on the nose. I do believe he had a boost in his boots in a few films though, I don't think it's a running joke and made up as you say. In Rio Bravo for instance in some scenes he makes 5'10 ish Dean Martin look 5 ft 8 range, so I think it was clear he had to have been close to 6'4 but often had a booster or wore big boots to pull off nearer 6'6. But I doubt he ever wore "4 inch lifts".
Bruno said on 9/Jul/16

Yet, even without lifts Wayne was a very imposing character and that’s why he gained attention with his obsession for extra height and lifts. One would think he really did not need them in the first place, but if the Duke himself felt he needed to be tallest man on the set, who are we to judge.

Great site, btw.John Wayne and other actors are not the only ones Obsessed With Height. Apparently we all are. :)

Wayne was one of the most respected celebrities in Hollywood when it came to politics, Tom. He stuck to his guns yet respected other people and their opinions. And you're right, you can't dismiss his character whether or not you disagree with his political opinions. The man was too modest. It's a shame we don't have many people like him anymore.
Gonzalo said on 7/Jul/16
I think there is a lot of garbage about Wayne beliefs, wether you like them or hate them. I mean there are several cases of left wing actors who respected Wayne and liked him. Lauren Bacall or Kate Hepburn worked with him and spoke marvellous things about Wayne. Robert Aldrich was also a democrat and said Wayne was great man and a true friend. Gregory Peck, Elizabeth Taylor or Kirk Douglas supported the motion of award him the Congressional Gold Medal.
Rock Hudson said Wayne was an angel.
What I mean to say is that he wasn´t as bad, cruel and intolerant person as many people want us to believe. He had his beliefs but respected others. And others respected him
Tom said on 5/Jul/16
Dmytryk was hardly a sterling citizen. He ended up naming names in order to get off the blacklist. So did Elia Kazan. At Least Wayne remained true his principles and never double crossed people. You might disagree with his politics, but you cannot dismiss his character.

Unsub 5'10" said on 22/Jun/16
Standing next to Chuck Connors, Arness, and Henry Fonda, I had the impression he was not over 6' 3, on the other hand he had 2.5 inches on Lee Marvin who I think was 1.84-85m, so, yeah, Wayne could've been 6'3", sure thing....6'3" was pretty much like 6'5" today.
Tom said on 21/Jun/16
He was never 6'4". He was 6'3" at his peak and wore boots with big heels. He was shorter than Rock Hudson.
miko said on 20/Jun/16
Surely if Wayne was a lift wearer, at 6'4 he'd have been looking 6'6 range at times and that never seemed to happen.

Against other 6'4 guys he just about held his own through his career, whether that was footwear orientated who knows.
James said on 17/May/16
Wayne was 6'3". He was only slightly taller than James Stewart in "The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance" because he was wearing cowboy boots with lifts, while Stewart had ordinary shoes.

Is it possible that we can get a page for Hank Worden, Rob? He was in a lot of John Wayne films and is interestingly described as 6'1.5" even though he looked shorter than that next to Wayne. I would say he was 5'11" - 6'0" range.
Tom said on 24/Apr/16
Lee Marvin was 6'1". It was 180,20 who said Wayne was 6'2", not me.
LoganNoll1996 said on 22/Apr/16
Lee Marvin at 6'1" would put Wayne at 6'3.5" which is still taller than what you're claiming him to be(6'2-6'3). But Lee Marvin was 6'1.5" putting Wayne at 6'4". Wayne himself wrote down 6'3.75" as his height and he certainly does look it in a lot of his films even in barefoot scenes. I still will continue to describe him as 6'4".

If Wayne was only 6'2-6'3 then everyone in Hollywood is, according to you(Tom), 1-2" shorter than what Rob has them listed at - and a lot of people agree with Rob's listings.
Tom said on 21/Apr/16
Lee Marvin was 6'1".
LoganNoll1996 said on 18/Apr/16
6'2" peak for Wayne is ridiculous. He was taller than near 6'2" actors like Ward Bond and Lee Marvin by 2-2.5 inches even when in flats. Not to mention he looked towering even when next to 6'2" guys. 6'3" peak is debatable since there's an image online where he was fractionally taller than Stewart who himself was 6'3".
Bruno said on 18/Apr/16
Wayne might have worn "half-inch lifts" so he looked taller compared to other actors in the film like James Stewart and Richard Boone,

LoganNoll1996 said on 16/Apr/16
I need EVIDENCE, not a simple claim like Ron Howard being 5'7" peak when clearly he wasn't. He was noticably taller than Lauren Bacall in "The Shootist" and she's 5'7.5" so I am to believe she's only 5'5.5" then since Ron Howard was 5'7"? I will admit that Wayne was a flat 6'3" in that film but he was in his late 60s, was overweight, and developed health problems so he clearly lost some height.

6'3.75" - 6'4" at peak and down to 6'3" by his later years.
Tom said on 15/Apr/16

LoganNoll1996 said on 13/Apr/16
Ron is around 5'7 - 5'8 nowadays but was definitely 5'9 in his younger years and was completely DWARFED by a barefoot Wayne who was in his late 60s at the time. I need more than just empty claims by other celebrities and celebheights contributors to convince me that Wayne wore lifts. Cause there's evidence to prove otherwise such as his barefoot scenes in "Donovan's Reef" and "The Shootist".
Bruno said on 13/Apr/16

Bruno said on 11/Apr/16
LoganNoll1996 said on 10/Apr/16
Fact is that he didn't look much shorter barefoot than he did with shoes on. Was well over 2 inches taller than a 6'1.5" Lee Marvin in "Donovan's Reef" and he was barefoot and sometimes in flats throughout the majority of the movie.

And how do we know he didn't just wear 0.25" lifts to bring his barefoot 6'3.75" height up to the full 6'4"? Everyone assumes he wears 2-4" lifts which is a load of crap.

Well said but you are never going to convince these people who believe JW wore lifts otherwise. Yet ask them to produce evidence that he did and they just talk BS. All one needs to do is look at a barefoot Wayne in 1976 The Shootist and see him tower over a 22 year old Ron Howard who is of average height at 5'9''.

Lee Marvin was 6ft1-2 range peak, possibly closer to the latter (6ft1¾). I think John Wayne had 2in on him so this height fits.

Capucine said Wayne wore lifts in 1960, five or six years before Mitchum worked with Wayne.

Wayne wore a wig from 1948 onwards so it isn't surprising he wore lifts as well.
Gonzalo said on 8/Apr/16
Lee Marvin looked very similar in height to Gene Hackman or William Hurt, who are undoubtedly in the 1´86-88 area.
LoganNoll1996 said on 7/Apr/16
Just because someone says something doesn't make it true(rumors). If I'm not mistaken, Robert Mitchum was the one to start the lifts controversy. But it could've been as much as a joke poking fun at Wayne's height since he was known for being so towering next to his costars.

He was wearing flats in "The Big Trail" and was still taller than a 6'1-6'2 Ian Keith and a 6'0-6'1 Tyrone Power who both had a footwear advantage over him. And Lee Marvin was definitely not under 6'1. A flat 6'1 is as low as he would've been with his 6'1.5" claim being accurate.

Rob's listing for Wayne is accurate even though it wouldn't surprise me if he was a full 6'4". Even when in flats, socks, or bare feet the man was just massive back in his day.
James said on 7/Apr/16
Lee Marvin was just under 6'1". Wayne was 6'3".
Arch Stanton said on 5/Apr/16
Yes, you only have to watch Donovan's Reef with Wayne in boat shoes to see he was near a genuine 6'4. You could see his feet in them and definitely no lifts, The man was between 2 and 3 inches taller than than 6'1.5 Lee Marvin
Tom said on 2/Apr/16
Probably because so many people who worked with him said he wore lifts.
LoganNoll1996 said on 1/Apr/16
My bad, I never watched Donovan's Reef yet(only the beginning). Elizabeth Allen is listed on these sites as 5'9". GIven how she worked as a fashion model, it's possible that is not her actual height. She could've been as low as 5'8" - 5'8.5" for all we know. And Wayne appeared to be at least a head taller than her in that scene I posted which would put him as a 6'3ish - 6'4" guy barefoot.

Don't know why people still persist that he wore lifts.
Bruno said on 1/Apr/16

LoganNoll1996 said on 6/Mar/16
Just curious, Tom, how tall do you think Wayne was?
PLB said on 6/Mar/16
The idea that he wore 4 inch lifts had always seemed improbable to me. I was always an honest 6'4" barefoot but to correct a problem with my foot I once wore some three inch lifts. Jesus. What pain. My back was killing me and I stumbled around like I was drunk. I don't know how the ladies manage. OTOH I liked being taller.

But maybe Wayne did wear big lifts. Herbert Marshall lost a leg and appeared in many movies thereafter looking completely normal. But if he did wear such big lifts there would have had to have been a big conspiracy involving everyone on the set. I think a normal man can get away with funny shoes that add as much as two inches. But I find four inches unlikely. That's almost a stilt.

BTW I watched 'The Alamo' for the first time the other night. Wayne was no director.
Rory said on 5/Mar/16
Rob, with all the conspiracies about Wayne and lifts what do you think the chances are that he was more like 6'2 and wore lifts to look about 6'4, or do you rule them out completely and think he was genuinely around 6'4 ?

there's no smoke without fire.

In Wayne's case though, maybe there is a kind of myth and an element of Chinese Whispers to it. A joke that grew legs...

LoganNoll1996 said on 23/Feb/16
Tyrone Power could've lost height but I see him as still being a 6 footer by then. So 6'0" - 6'0.5" which would put him at 6'1" - 6'1.5" when accounting for footwear advantage and Wayne is still taller.

There's also a pic of Wayne with Ward Bond from that film in which Wayne is visibly taller despite having a noticeable footwear disadvantage and Bond himself was a 6'1" - 6'2" guy.
movieguy said on 23/Feb/16
I don't think he was a full 6'4'' but doubt if he was much less than this. Yeah I can believe he wore lifts as he was same height as 6'5'' Jim Hutton in films they made despite being considerably older. Looked very different as a young man from the more well known middle aged superstar. Much lighter in build and more typically a Hollywood good looking leading man. I actually think he was a brilliant actor although to the younger generation his films probably don't have widespread appeal which I suppose is understandable.

Go watch "The Big Trail", John Wayne's first film as a lead role. Wayne obviously is not wearing lifts in that film if you look at his footwear and he was a little taller than Ian Keith who was regularly described as 6'2". He was also taller than Tyrone Power, Sr. who was wearing boots - and Tyrone Power, Sr. is described on most sites as being 6'1". The lowest I would argue for a young John Wayne is 6'3.5" but no lower.

Also don't forget Wayne had lung cancer when "The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance" was filmed, and therefore may not have appeared at his peak height without help.

Stewart did not wear lifts, but Lee Marvin was only six foot.

Since Wayne wore a wig in every film from 1948 onwards, why do you think he wouldn't have worn lifts as well? He wouldn't allow Jack Elam to be cast in "The Train Robbers" because Elam stole "Rio Lobo" from him, and he refused to work with Robert Mitchum after the younger actor stole "El Dorado" from him.

In Liberty Balance Wayne had two inches on Lee Van Cleef. He was taller and much bigger tan him

Arch Stanton said on 9/Jan/16
Basically we can't prove he wore lifts or didn't wear them. But I think too many people talked about it to dismiss entirely. The only 6 ft and wore 4 inch lifts is certainly utter nonsense though. But until we actually have concrete proof, like an old studio photo of his boots on set with inserts poking out the top or whatever then it's pure speculation. All I know is that in a lot of his films his boots did look really bulky and difficult to walk in, and at times he could pull off looking taller than this listing. But you could say the same thing about any actor walking in those big style of boots.Just look at Burt Reynolds, at times he could look near 6 ft 1 in them!
Arch Stanton said on 9/Jan/16
There's certainly no point in debating that he was just 6 ft. In The Shootist I think it was we see him barefoot and clearly he looked a decent 6'3" er even at that age. He was genuinely a big man, and had the frame of a 6'4 man, regardless of footwear. You can't dismiss all the claims as false rumours though, even Mitchum admitted Wayne was 6 ft 4 and wore lifts. In a lot of his films his footwear does look really bulky and difficult to walk around in. There's no proof I've seen of him wearing lifts, but it isn't impossible that he had a booster in his boots in some films to pull off looking even more imposing. That was part of the package he was selling to the public, and his "man mountain" larger than life American image was crucial to his career. I would doubt he ever wore "4 inch lifts" though. As Sam said previously in some films he could really look more massive than others, in certain scenes in fact he could look like a man closer to 6 ft 6. It isn't impossible that he had something in in those films to pull off looking even bigger. But I think it's very clear from watching him in so many films he was genuinely a very tall man even without them.

Rob, is there any point debating that or is it a complete myth?
Editor Rob
as many know, the more often a lie is repeated, the greater the chance it becomes accepted as the truth.

I think if you watch his movies and see the types of boots men wore, were his much different or could somehow conceal 3 inches worth of lifts?
Arch Stanton said on 4/Jan/16
I've seen some of his rarer mid 30s films of late and he looked close to 6'4 in all of them. Too tall to be under 6'3". The only film I saw of his where he looked 6'2.5 was The Big Trail wearing flat mocassins. In all others his body looks too big to have only been 6'2 range.

But why didn't he wear lifts in The Undefeated, when acting with Rock, he looked about an inch lower or so than Rock and if he was worried about his height he defo would have worn them then. If he had 2'' lifts in his boots with Rock then he should appear taller which is not the case.

Check out 1970 Swing out sweet land at about 6 minutes forward you can clearly see his shoes and no lifts and see him stand close to Dan Blocker they are pretty close in height. Why didn't he wear lifts then , why didn't he wear them in Brannigan????
Gonzalo said on 18/Nov/15
Ferrer still looked tall in the 80`s, when he appeared in Falcon Crest. Close to 1`90.

The lifts rumour about Wayne is widely spread. It is true that we have not seen any real evidences so far (as we have with other people). But it is also true that there are films of Wayne in which he looks tall (for instance, In harm´s way or The longest day) and others in which he looks huge (The shootist, Rio Lobo). Probably Wayne started wearing lifts in the 60`s when he began to lose height and he wanted to be as tall as he was in his prime. I think we will never know.

Misteries of height. That´s why this site exists

Pete said on 17/Nov/15
By 1975 both Ferrer and Wayne had probably each lost about an inch in height (older). I believe most people lose 1/4" of height per decade after turning 40. So, Ferrer was probably closer to 6'2", and Wayne 6'2.5" or 6'3". Makes sense.

It's strange with all the lifts talk, there is no picture of him wearing any. In 1975 Brannigan wearing regular shoes he appears nearly 1'' taller than 6'3'' Mel Ferrer. In 1976 The Shootist Wayne looks huge compared to Ron Howard. Wayne barefoot and Ron with boots. I have said it a lot Wayne lost very little height with age.
Editor Rob
Here's another quote from actor Russell McCubbin: "[Wayne] wore lifts in his shoes and he wore a hairpiece. he was a good fella...I got along with him fine."
Sam said on 13/Nov/15
I go back and forth on whether Wayne was wearing lifts in movies, I feel like he did as well...I feel like some films like The Big Trail or Angel and the Badman he's clearly not wearing any and there's too many films where he looks exactly like a man with his listing, wearing average cowboy boots, should look with his often well known co-stars. But then there's some films like El Dorado where he seems more enormously tall than he should at 6'3.75" & it keeps me guessing.

@ Steve, Bruno, Sam. I agree that the idea of him wearing lifts does seem ridiculous, especially as there's barefoot evidence in one of his later films that he was still close to 6'4. Rock Hudson had about 4cm on Wayne, are we to really believe he was only high 6'3" in lifts? But a number of people did claim it. Was it their idea of jest, not sure? No I don't know what you mean. The photos are not supposed to be ideal to gauge height, far from it. I'm basically saying that in terms of height John Wayne in the Big Trail and somebody like Jeff Goldblum its impossible to figure how they could be the same height. Wayne looks nowhere near as tall in that film. You don't have to get all defensive Patrick, I'm not disputing Wayne was actually 6'4", he looked it in most of his films but he oddly looked 6'2" tops in his early movies, that's what I'm saying.

...I'm not interested in getting into debates, but with a bit of spare time I read some posts here and will add my 3 cents. Regarding Wayn's hands; I've read at least two articles, over my life (I have no clue when or where) that say people who shook John Wayne's hand were amazed at how much of a giant mitt his hands were. I've never seen his handprint, so I can't say what's true, only what I know I read. As for height, He certainly was over 6'2, I have no doubts about that...just by the way he looked and sized up to others. 6'3 or 6'4. It's probably like what I think Eastwood's height was. 6'4 "right" out of bed, 6'3 by day's end seems right, for both men. And, Wane never lost good posture. As for Wayne's acting, I think he was spot on. I often chuckle at criticisms of certain actor's acting. Pretend the average person you run into at Walmart is an actor, acting. Would any of us say they were doing good acting? No. We'd say they say their lines with no emotion and they aren't exciting. My point being, how was Wayne "supposed" to act? I believe him when he's acting. I believe he's that guy. That's good acting. Actually, great comedy is the best acting. I could care less about what the Academy thinks is good acting (always drama. Who "Can't" moan and groan and cry). I digress. My apologies. Wayne, 6'3 to 6'4, with mitts for hands...in my opinion.

As for the Mann's Chinese Theatre prints...i also saw them many times...It is easy to guess he just did not 'press' a very hard concrete whichis corroborated by then accounts. In fact, considering those prints - which would tend to make us think John Wayne was actually Mickey Rooney - rather than one's own eyes in, for example, just...warching any of his movies, comes close to being stupid or naively blind or both.

Surprised they didn't inflate his height though as "being big" in that era was desirable. Stone as well as previously JHH, you both wrote 'gold'...I just cannot do anything but agree with you...i could have written those words. Some people can even be 6' 5 or 5'4 and nobody cares because they don't 'have it'. James Cagney, a far more - to me - interesting, weak word, man than the other James, Dean, was probably 5'5 or 5'6 tops...but what a giant! His height was a part of his personality...as Mickey Mouse's one - joke but then...The Duke was not only tall, many are tall and who remarks them, but a giant in humanity as Cagney, Bogart, Tracy and even in his own way, Mickey...Rooney. The Duke was huge and the great Rock Hudson could not match him though in this feature film, taller. He was something no one has been before or after him...James Arness, a great man too was possibly two inches taller but finally smaller. I am just sure him or the wonderful Clint Walker would have agreed. I miss the ones Stone mentioned...all of them. I was born in 1953, in France and i all along my life, considered them as landmarks as human beings i wanted to take as examples in my own life as well as actors larger than life. There was only one John Wayne and this very world cannot produce another, at least 'known'. Watch movies of the 30ies, 40ies and 50ies...and tell me, comparing to what is on screen now, there is nothing wrong in our values, tastes today, that it is 'better', more intelligent, more profound...actors to day are short or not tall but should they be tall, but a bunch of TV actors, they would be dwarfed by any of the Stone's list.e comments. I find this arguing about the Big Man's height bemusing. Aye, I've always been interested in height (and cursed my body for years for reaching only 6' 1" and not the 6' 2" I expected to be!) but folk are wasting time squabbling over JW's height and size. Frankly, some of the comments are cringeworthy, such as, 'He had small hands!' or 'He was only 5 foot something and they made the sets smaller than normal scale to make him look bigger!". Dear oh dear. John Wayne at his peak was six foot four. This is documentated in his college years. He was clearly a big, big man - even if he lost an inch or so as he went into his sixties. His hands were huge. His feet were average. I mean, what the heck are you lot arguing about?? This is not Frank Sinatra we're arguing about, a little guy who always wore lifts to appear taller. This is John Wayne! He was huge! And yes, even though he was huge, some other actors were even bigger, or at least taller. Rock Hudso is clearly taller (and a whole lot slimmer (sorry Duke)) in The Undefeated. Hudson I believe was six foot five, so even at Dukes peak, Hudson was taller. James Arness was a ridiculous height, six foot six or seven. I don't understand why some folk use some other actors who were taller than Duke as a some sort of weapon against him. A lot of folk are taller than six foot four. The point is, Duke was six foot four at his peak and had an excellent proportion of body, reasonably long legged and massiceve in the torso (look at him next to Dean Martin or Glen Campbell, he towers over them and they, whilst not being greatlt tall, were certainly not short. A good indicator is the scene in Donovans Reef when Duke and Lee Marvin are standing side by side after fighting in the water. Both appear to be wearing flat soled shoes. Wayne is clearly an inch or two taller than Marvin, who was a solid six foot two. Maybe by that time (he must have been around 55 years old) he had lost an inch in height, but he was still huge.
Anyway, point is, debates would make more sense on folk we know aren't as tall they claim or appear.

They show the boxes they used for him to stand on in order to be taller than his leading ladies& the special 3/4 scale they had to make the saloon doors so they he would "appear" to fill up the space. Universal says that he was only 5' something.''. Either i am stupid and need to get english lessons or this is the most ridiculous comment i ever read in that besides perfect site. About proportions, the Duke - as welle as Sean Conneyr - was a very proportioned man which makes him look majestic, stately stature he wisely knew how to use.In Gunsmoke episodes with Dennis Weaver who always looked very tall as about 6'2.5, above all at the time, James Arness litterally dwarfes him, in height as well as in shoulder width. He looks like a sunday-school boy beside Arness and as far as i know, that is never the impression the duke gives whether it is in watching movies Arness co-stars or the pics, including those put here by Henrik. As for having 'samll hands', have you ever watch any Wayne's movie to say that? He has huge bear paws and anyone can see that. About Lucchese boots, they have exactly the same heel height as any other brand used by other actors in any western, making them all looking with the same height advantage. Fireman, the story is nothing but absolutely true and very known. The pic Outlaw shows with Ryan and Wayne proves they were the same height which is visible in their common movies. John Wayne was besides, always swaying and pratically never stood upright even in his 'military-soldier movies'. His favorite pose was always standing on one leg, the other being folded, torso and head swaying aside with a gentle smile as only have real strong people. No showing off here and real cool attitude, nothing to do with so-called cool actors as the late Steve McQueen, Brando or the supposedly cool James Dean who was a very interesting actor but tormented as the the two others. Paul Newman was another real cool man. Looking cool and being so are two completely different things. The Duke didn't care looking taller or not, ore else he always would have stood uprigth not to loose a tenth inch of height! Building special 3/4 doors frames to make him look taller...how is it possible such silly things can be engendered by a human brain?

NOT according to Universal Studios. They show the boxes they used for him to stand on in order to be taller than his leading ladies& the special 3/4 scale they had to make the saloon doors so they he would "appear" to fill up the space. Universal says that he was only 5' something.

Happy Shahan who owned the ranch where the Alamo was filmed told me that Wayne was about 6'3". Wayne nearly always wore Lucchese Cowboy boots which add 2" to his height.

Most guys that I know who are 6'3"-6'4" wear a size 10-12US shoe (12 being the most uncommon), which Wayne supposedly did (11). My uncle is a weak 6'4" and takes 11. I also have a 6'6" friend who wears 11. I am 6'3" myself, and I take 13. My feet surely do stand out and are occasionally seen as "freaky", I can tell you that. Don't know if it's really that legitimate to say that Wayne had unnormally small feet...

It seemed to be true, however, that he did have small hands:

I would say that he had a moderate build, neither long- or short-legged. He would indeed have looked more proportionate at 6'2"-6'3", which makes me inclined to believe that he actually was around the 6'4" mark.

Yeah exactly. Charles Bronson was the sort of guy though that no tall man wants to get in a fight with in a pub. He was like one of those pug faced super tough boxers with stamina who would the s**t out of most bigger guys and will "fight to the burger". Sinewy is a perfect word to describe him. Or "weathered", like Paul Hogan as Croc Dundee. I can believe Wayne was 6'4" but had comparitively short legs and small feet for his height and a very large torso. But I think there was more chance of 6'3.5" than 6'4.5" in all honesty Carl. Clint Eastwood and Clint Walker on the other hand obviously wore a 36 inseam. I think we saw his true height in that barefoot clip in a dressing gown and he was quite old at the time too and looked 6'4" in comparison, that's what convinced me anyway. But if you watch the Big Trail or several of his other early films seriously you will find yourself squinting at the screen and thinking "6'4, really?? My personal opinion is that he looked 6'2" ish in the Big Trail and didn't even look close to 6'4". And he did look 4 inches shorter than Alan Napier in Big Jim Mclain.
Henrik said on 9/Feb/12
John Wayne's legs were 34" (inseam). They auction out pants worn by him in his films with that inseam (the ones he wore short were usually 32") on the Internet.

Sean Connery was supposedly a strong 6'2" (189cm) with a 34" inseam:

Henrik, Charles Bronson was not tall but not short for all that at probably about 5’9 or so, maybe 5‘8 minimum. He however, was so well built and visibly naturally very strong – the natural biggest and sinew arms ever – that nobody paid attention to his height. A bit as about Robert Conrad. It is not his page but since we are talking about “men”…John Wayne was very tall and broad shouldered and with long big arms and legs. Many actors were then minimum or above 6’1 while being 6 now is “tall”. That’s a fact.

Charles Bronson was 5'8" according to this site. Supposedly often referred to as 6' in his movies. 5'8" wasn't short for his era in real life, but it was for the Hollywood standards back then.

Yeah, Patrick. Some seem to have a hard time coping with the fact that the majority of old Western actors were tall. Come on, there were shorter ones too, like Charles Bronson and James Dean.

Calling anyone idiot is very rude and above all, easy behind one’s keyboard but that person sounds qualified to do so for being himself “so”. Actually, arguing Clint Eastwood being 6’1 at peal is not only irrelevant but silly. This is a serious site! I still believe that the Duke was 6’4 even though I admit that sometimes, he only looks 6’3 just because of his swaying and never having a straight up posture while facing standing upright tall actors.
Henrik said on 18/Jan/12
I'd be careful about calling others "idiots" when claiming a peak Eastwood to have been 6'1" (!). John Wayne was listed 6'3" in high scool medical records, and 6'4" in college records. At least my school nurse put down what she got from the stadiometer in my records.

Many people refer to John Wayne as being 6ft 4" this is incorrect. In the film "The man who shot Liberty Valence" he stands an inch shorter than James Stewart, who is 6ft 3". In the film "The defeated" he stands 2 inches shorter than Rock Hudson, who is 6ft 4". So J.W. is in fact 6ft 2". Which is still tall. He was also known to wear 2" lifts in his shoes, to ensure he towered over tall actors. Why the preoccupation with height...he was great. Now 2 very tall actors were Clint Walker and James Arness who were both 6ft 7".No one was taller than them.

By your logic Wayne can only have been the bare 6'0''. Add 2'' lift Wayne 1 inch shorter than JS.

1 thing is for sure Ivor, Wayne stood over 6'' taller than Ron Howard in his final film 'The Shootist'. He was barefoot while Howard (5'9'') was wearing boots in a full body shot (very important) of both. This means Wayne was 6'4'' at 68 years of age. No lifts in the feet

Richard Widmark and many other smaller actors had "help" In the old days in Hollywood many times there were trenches dug to assure movement of the taller actor with shorties. Meg Ryan will not allow other blonds in a scene for years....so she sparkled (as if she didn't just being herself. Exactly, and it would be rare for a star in Hollywood to claim their exact barefoot messurement, especially for an actor who made a living which thrived on his man mountain image. If he was 6 ft 4 barefeet it was morning height I agree with Henrik.

Richard Widmark was 5'10" But whatever his height - a terrific actor deserving higher than 13th All Time Film Legends.

Well he could look 6'2" at times. Legit 6'6" Alan Napier had four inches on him in Big Jim McLean and he did not look anywhere nearer a legit 6'4" in The Big Trail. But in an awful amount of movies including his barefoot scenes with that 5;9,5" in shoes guy he certainly looked 6'4" range. I think he had two inches on Marvin though who was not under 6'1.5".

It is interesting how Hollywood has changed its height ideal from time to time. I'm surprised at how tall the actors back in the day were, when the average height in fact was lower than today. John Wayne 6'4", Clint Eastwood 6'4", Gary Cooper 6'3", Rock Hudson 6'5" and Lee Van Cleef 6'2".

Nowadays, most Hollywood actors seem to be about average height, or even below average. It feels like actors 6'3" and over often get to be typecasted as the "monster characters", bouncers and "dumb henchmen" of the main villains, lol.

This is somewhat off-topic, but about six months ago I thought it would be cool to get a John Wayne movie from Netflix. I don't recall now whether it was 'Rio Bravo' or another of his movies, but I was disappointed in the movie's 'veracity' in that the movie supposedly was set in the 1860's, perhaps after the Civil War, but the rifles used were 1893 Winchesters, which hadn't been invented at that time. A small thing, I suppose, but noticeable to the average gun nut.

On the original topic, who really gives a rat's a$$ whether John Wayne was 6'-3" or 6'-4 1/2"??? Whatever his height was he was a great actor!

@AZ Mink: What a joke. This is even better than the nonsense posted on the Eastwood page. I've seen some pretty lame estimates for The Duke, but yours takes the cake for lunacy. 6'1" barefoot? Run along...

The Duke was a big, tall man and he remained so even towards the end of his life. And NO--I don't believe he ever wore lifts. The man stacked up evenly against legit 6'4" actors like Woody Strode and Robert Ryan. Furthermore, I just watched him most recently in 1962's THE MAN WHO SHOT LIBERTY VALANCE. He had about an inch on 6'3" Jimmy Stewart, and an inch plus change on 6'2" - 6'2 1/2" Lee Van Cleef. Even in sneakers or dress shoes, the Duke still towered over just about everybody. If anybody was truly larger than life, it was John Wayne.

Certainly Wayne was far more solidly built than other actors of comparable height, but I think R. Mitchum takes first prize for being broad shouldered.

ALL I'm saying is that by the late sixties he had lost some height. I don't doubt he was 6'4'' in his prime.

Wayne can't have still have stood 6'4 in his sixties. It is just not credible.
Patrick said on 8/Aug/11
I just watched Reap the Wild Wind and as usual, and I would go so far as to say that especially in his “young” days, i.e. his forties, he towered everybody not only in height but in width! It seems that any other actor had “”shoulders next to him. No bodybuilding, no special training; just a “nature” and that’s it.
Let alone his phenomenal presence and the incredible goodness of his look which was his “trademark”.
Just a huge giant in this film, Harry Woods, is able to make him look a bit shorter and less broad shouldered than him!
Yet, tall actors as was Raymond Massey and even Ray Milland (they are not in this site!) seem shorter than Wayne and lightweights. As for cow boy boots…in westerns, even those who wore city costumes used to wear high heel boots at least in the movies. The reality could be different!
So, all the actors got the same “advantage” which as result, put them on equal footing.
guyfrommars said on 6/Aug/11

Ryan looks to have a good inch in other scenes of that film (through Ryan may have been over 6'4'') I think the evidence suggests Wayne was no taller than 6'3'' & 1/2 by that time it is quite possible he was a full 6'4'' in his youth.

Cowboy boots have higher heels than other footwear. Virtually ALL actors lower their voices. ( except for Robert Mitchum who had to raise his)
