One of the first movies I ever saw in the theatre was The Music Man in 1962 with 5'10" Robert Preston. Yes Preston made some other solid movies, but if you ask anybody who ever saw a Robert Preston movie,The Music Man handily wins out as Preston's greatest movie on his career. Although many people sadly don't watch classic movies,I would put The Music Man as a video collection "requirement," especially if like me you love classic musicals. Preston also made some game show appearances, such as in 1957 as What's My Line? panelist he nailed mystery guest Sir Cyril Ritchard,a gifted Australian actor best known as Captain Hook in 5'3" Mary Martin's Peter Pan,which 5' Cathy Rigby has won 2 Tonys AND an Emmy for,(Sir Cyril as WML panelist in 1961 nailed mystery guest Carol Burnett, colorful 5'7" comic actress) and in 1963 as WML mystery guest nailed by Wagon Train's John McIntire (he later guessed mystery guest Peggy Cass later in 1963 and in 1964 he nailed Nelson Burton Jr.'s Air Force pilot occupation, but two months later in Atlanta,Burton nailed the first of his 18 PBA titles.) If you love great musicals like I do,you'll enjoy Robert Preston as The Music Man! (Won 1962 Best Score Oscar.#5 on my all time 100 Greatest Warner Brothers movies.)

Ha ha ha! I wonder if the writers of 'Coronation Street' realised that they named one of their characters the very same thing as an established American actor? I'd never heard of him either, but I thought to myself, "I know that name!"
So now I am aware of his existence, I might as well give him a height! I'll have to cheat, of course! 5ft10 it will be then...

Looks a bit like George Wendt

Well, a good chance of him being 5'10.5"...considering posture and such, he could be a tiny bit less than Holden who could come off as a bit weak at 5'11" mark himself.

In this group shot Preston looks every bit as tall as 5'11" William Holden.

I believe Preston was a solid 5'11" when young. I watched Beau Geste and he was four inches shorter than Gary Cooper and two inches shorter than Ray Milland. If Cooper was 6'3" and Milland was 6'1" that means Preston was 5'11". And in the film Preston didn't wear lifts. But 5'8" Brian Donlevy sure did. In one scene where he's supposedly wearing white socks, the socks are over huge lifts!

Yeah, at some points in Beau Geste with Gary Cooper I thought he could pass for 5'10.5" but probably nearer the 5'10" mark ultimately.

Cheers Rob, seems the best shout, I'd thought he looked a strong 5 ft 10 with Andrews and Garner in Victoria but I got a good look at him in the Music Man and thought nothing over 5 ft 10.

from what I've seen you could argue 177, 178, but then some of his later movies he wouldn't be at his peak of course.
