She was forever coming out with songs as well. She’s a rapper, and gave me a few demonstrations!

I have found another track that I like on this 90s Top of the Pops. It’s by Robert Plant and he’s playing live with a band of other long-haired musicians.
He scrapes in as the tallest, but only by a small margin, as they’re all pretty tall.

43 years ago today, I saw Led Zeppelin at Knebworth. Jimmy and Robert both looked like tall specimens of manhood, and there didn’t seem to be that much difference between the two.
They were FANTASTIC and they changed my life. I noted all the groups on their fans’ badges, and that’s how I got into Rush.

It was the week after the week I left school, and as I was working, I had plenty of money to spend on souvenirs.

Funny song titles and amusing band names:-
I remember a song by Robert called 'Big Log'! 💩 When Bob Harris used to play it, he'd never s , and always kept a straight face. I popped in with my friend Bert and watched him doing his deejaying for Greater London Radio. Inbetween playing records, he was watching a Man United football match. When he stood up, he looked very tall indeed.
This was back in 1995. Then there was a funny sounding band called 'King L', and Bob pronounced it so precisely that it never occurred to me that there was a rude connotation until another deejay said it! 🙊 Bob is very precisely spoken. He had a brief career as a policeman in the 60s, following in his father's footsteps, but his Dad was totally supportive when he wanted to become a deejay.
He's met absolutely EVERYONE, and I have a DVD upstairs of him introducing, and meeting, loads of bands and singers. I'm sure Led Zeppelin feature on it. It's a paradise for height comparisons.
Robert Plant can have 6ft1.5 today. 😃

Today, I've been checking out Robert Plant's fanship of Fairport Convention singer Sandy Denny, and a lot more besides about the tragic Sandy.

Sandy was 5ft3. Robert was a towering 6ft1 and probably 5ft11.75 today.

Rob, please do not ignore this recent picture. This should be proof enough that Plant is down to 5'10" today. Here he is with a 5'10" Dan Rather (taken in 2018), who btw is almost 90 years old and has probably lost more than a mere 2", so I'd give him 5'9" and change. But going with your 5'10" for him, Robert is practically same height, or at best, a 1/4" taller than him today. This should be enough to lower him to maximum 5'10.5" if you want to be conservative:

Editor Rob
He might begin looking 5ft 10 at times, but it is trickier to tell if he has some height still in him, which could mean stretching up for a taller measurement.
Danimal 5'9 3/4" said on 16/Aug/19
Height loss had already set in for Robert by this point in 2002 (54 years old). Here he was standing next to 5'11" John McEnroe and they were pretty much the same height. You could see that Robert's upper back was already curving.

I used to walk about in a denim jacket which was covered in sew-on badges at the back and enamel ones at the front. The Led Zeppelin one took pride of place - bang in the middle! I met a great many rock fans via this jacket; it was a real conversation starter. The fans would discuss with me which concerts they had been to, and all too often, they'd be exactly the same as the ones I'd seen. Yes, we're a friendly bunch, we rock fans! 🎸🎧🎶🎵💿

I'd just say he was a solid 6 foot plus. Maybe reaching 6'1" in the morning and possibly dropping a little below by night. So he was always hovering around that 6 foot mark. He was a tall guy in my book. 6 feet is tall.

That would seem the very minimum for Robert in Led Zeppelin's heyday. I saw them play at Knebworth on the 4th August 1979, and I was mightily impressed! They came on at around midnight and were the best band I have ever seen live! I saw Robert with Jimmy Page play at the Shepherd's Bush empire or odeon - I cannot remember exactly what it's called! Once again, they were
fantastic and as it was a far more enclosed venue, I could shout to them!
Today, Robert gets 6ft 1.5 from me for his peak height and 6ft for his height now.
It is worth mentioning that they looked far bigger and more imposing onstage in the early 70's (I've seen pictures!), because, like any rock star, they wore shoes which will have pushed their heights up by quite a few inches!

I think Robert Plant's apparant height loss is mostly due to bad posture. I don't see him at only 5 ft11, unless ofcourse Jimmy Page is no 5ft11 either but a 5ft10 guy.

Next to 6ft1,5 David Letterman looks to be at least 5ft11,5, and again, noticeably taller than Page.
I think you have to make a decision Rob, either you downgrade Page as well (taking into account a lot of users say that Letterman is no 6ft1,5 anymore) to 5ft10, or you upgrade Plant back to 5ft11,5 or 6ft.

A few videos of Robert in a chair being interviewed where you can see the progression of his neck/upper back curvature. First from 1988, then from 1993, then from 1995 (still PRE-height loss) and the last 3 are recent, where you can see his whole head is curved forward and he's become severely hunched over (hence the height loss). It's astounding that he's become this badly hunched over at only 66 years old. From what I can see, the curvature began at some point in the late 90's (when he was around 50) and has progressively gotten worse. He was a long and tall man up until around 1996 6'1"ish) and today he's lucky if he's 5'10":

Yup and I saw Page and Plant in concert in 1995 when I was in my late teens. Plant had at least 2-3" on Page back then and up until at least the late 90's. Today, Page appears taller than Plant. Plant really struggles to keep his head straight up. His neck/upper back has become severely curved. He used to have a long straight neck, now his head sits on his chest. Looks to have lost 3-4" easily.

My guess is that he was a solid 6 foot back in the day (perhaps 6 ft 0.5 inches at the very most). I thik I read somewhere that he was listed as 5ft 11.5 inches in some magazine back in 1969, which could be accurate. Remember, he was slim and often wore boots with heels (some with 5 inch heels), so perhaps he wasn't as tall as people think (or would wish to think -- classic "wishful thinking"). Regardless of his height, he was/is a decent & intelligent individual.

Some people are so unfair in comparing the 20 year old Robert to the modern day Robert. Age changes us all, and there is nothing anyone can do about it. As much as we want to all remain our beautiful 20 year old selves, time marches on, and usually marches right across our face....
God love ya!!

I met Plant in Harvard Square back in 1994 or so. The first thing that struck me was how tall he was-- 6'3" it seemed, but he had his boots on. But I didn't expect him to be so tall.
mcfan said on 14/May/11
Robert Plant was 6ft like Townshend, but wore cowboy boots. Just look at the early Zep concerts where he is only two inches taller than Page who was only 5'10.
Rob, why is Page listed as 5'11? He was only Clapton's height - 5'10. If memory serves me right a former contributor to this site had a photo where he made this claim of 5'11 for Page, but he himself turned out in reality to be roughly 1.5 inches shorter than he claimed, right?
Danimal said on 21/Apr/11
Robert gave the impression of a 6'2"-6'2.5" man barefoot up until the mid 1990's... In recent years he looks to have lost noticeable height. He's only 62/63 years old, but appears to have lost close to 2" in height from his peak.. I think it's due to poor posture and health (he hasn't looked healthy since the 1990's)...

I met Robert in 2008 in Austin TX when he appeared there with Allison Krause. He's over 6' trust me people. I'm 6'1" legit & he had me by just a bit. I'd give him 6'1-1/2" to 6'2" at best. But no less.

As listed as told to me from somebody who met him this week. Doesn't look well, really aged. No highs to his voice anymore.

If you look at this concert from sidney you can really see his true height. Most of the time they film him from the crowd but, this one is a bootleg from the upper levels.

how do you explain this? He's here with 5.7 glenn. Glenn had more heals, so it puts him somewhere between 5.10 and 5.11. He's can't be 6ft or over.

Sam, 5'8" was never even in the equation--that's too low. Robert's in the 5'11"-6'0 range.

Robert Plant was a larger person than Page. Page always wore tall boots in public so he looked deceivingly taller. I definitely believe Plant was 6'1".

I'd bet my life savings Plant never reached 6'1". More like 5'11.5". 6'1" is hysterical. He was really skinny and had long hair which probalby made him appear 2 or more inches taller than actuality. I think he was the tallest member of Zep though, at least 1/2" taller than Pagey. However tall they are, they need to TOUR man I have never got to see my favorite band live!!!!!!!!!
T.J. said on 1/May/09
I just watched a Biography epsidode about Led Zepplin
Jimmy Page looks an inch taller than Plant by an in in every photo
and Page is 5'11"/6' So either Plant's peak was very early in his adult hood or he was never that tall to begin with. He barely pulls of 5'11" in these pics. Let alone 6'1"?

Hardly a giant but yes Plant looks like one my dads old surfing buddies, tall, long salty hair and rugged features, they still think its 1973 maaaan!!! even at aged 60+! The guy even drives one of those cool old VW hippie surfer vans!! PLant always looked tall and rangy I thought he had to be near 6'2" in his prime. Certainly doesn't look it above though next to Glenn who somehow often manages to look a good height next to tall guys!! In the right picture Glenn is looking 5'9" because of the shoes I think and he looks like he has the clear footwear advantage. Hey aren;t the rock stars supposed to be the ones wearing the leather shoes?? Plant looks around 6'0.5" if I was to guess.
Ra said on 19/Mar/09
Plant was, and is still, a giant. Look at the length of his legs in other photos and in concerts, regardless of shoes. I don't know how tall his ex-wife is but he towered over her. When you read interviews and comments people made they always remarked on how interesting it was to see this very tall, rugged-looking blonde guy with the incredible other-worldly voice. He is definitely taller than Page, even if he stood up straight. Ever seen that interview of the two of them at a NYC press conference? Jimmy is this little runty thing next to the tall, god-like Plant. Love Jimmy's accent, though. Too bad he's a pervert. Anyway, as long as Plant hasn't shrunk in any other areas...Lord have mercy, will there ever be another man who looks as good in tight jeans as Robert Plant?
T.J. said on 24/Feb/09

always understood Hendrix to be about 5-8 to 5-9 (usually wore boots). one tipoff to his avg. height and smallish frame, is that his guitar looks kinda big on him (often a good but not infallible way to judge a gitpickers height - check out angus young for example, his guitar dwarfs him)
glenn said on 24/Aug/07
noel seemed like a grumpy guy until you went up to him.then he was very sweet and interested in what you had to say.he even took pics of the 2 of us on his own camera! ill never forget that.
miles smiles said on 23/Aug/07
It's strange, when I was a kid I would have sworn that Hendrix was 6-0. When you think of him, you think tall and skinny (and the most brilliant guitarist of all-time.) That would be a trip if he were really only 5-9.
5-10 is totally believable, though.....Hey Glenn, did you get a sense that Noel was bitter about the whole Experience and the record industry and his cut, etc?
A friend of mine saw him at a record store in Santa Cruz once, and immediately bought a Fat Mattress record for him to sign. He says he was about 5-6, too.
glenn said on 23/Aug/07

glenn said on 23/Aug/07
the thing with hendrix and alot of these legends back then is the heels they wore.we can only go by what we know.everyone that met or knew him actually said he was around my height.so i take it he wasnt tall.now i dont think he was 5-8.but 5-9 to 5-10 more like it.i also read 5-10.im glad im not the only one that thinks he looked like rooney.
miles smiles said on 23/Aug/07
Glenn, you're right about Keith's late dad looking like Rooney (there's a somewhat recent picture of them in the new issue of Mojo)....Yeah, I've heard Hendrix was 5-11 from various sources, too, but considering Noel and Mitch were pretty short, it is hard to say. Glenn, I could see 5-10 for Jimi, but do you really think he was as short as 5-9? I think I have a photo somewhere of him with Clapton, and he appeared a bit taller. Couldn't see their footwear, though.
Anonymous said on 21/Aug/07
Hendrix was 5'11" according to an old article in a British magazine (can't remember name of magazine, but the one that would list all the stats of band members). Of course, this magazine probably listed whatever height the musician told them.

How do I start a thread for Jimi Hendrix' height? I've heard he was about 5-11, and he certainly looks it, but it's hard to tell with his thin-cut sixties threads and relatively skinny frame. Anyone got an opinion?

No, they were stronger in '83. I saw them inside in Hartford Ct. and they blew the roof off that place in '83. Much better sound system. In clubs, a lot of bands had mushy sound and not much to work with as a set with one LP out. The Who/Clash show at Shea Stadium in '82 was awesome.

Oh man, 2 dollars to see the Police in 79? That sounds like heaven, literally. I have the Police live double disc and the 79 Boston show on there is just flat out unbeleivable. Cant imagine seeing them in 79. Their 83 Atlanta show sounds really polished and tame in comparison.
Brad said on 12/Apr/07
Hey, I saw The Police for $2 in '79.Paid in pocket change, some pennies included. I just spent $250 for 1 ticket for them the other day. Central Park Schaefer/Dr. Pepper Summer series was great. $3.50 or less for most of the 70's. I had a '72 Cadillac Coup Deville in '79...about 12 MPG. At $1 a gallon who cared? I saw 77 cents a gallon in '92 in Waco Texas. You think the oil companies are killin' us?
Viper said on 11/Apr/07
3.50 for a concert ticket just blows me away. And then Gas at 60 cents!!! LOL
Brad said on 10/Apr/07
I get the L.A. Weekly to see if anything is worthwhile in the concert scene there. The Whiskey, House Of Blues, etc. are just buried in bad music. I'll take the '85-'90 hair metal over what's out there now. The kicker is, you have to pay high prices to see that schlock not to mention $3.19 a gallon there. I'd bury WPLJ in concert contest entries to get that $3.50 ticket. Man, $3.50 was a lotta $ in '75. Gas was 60 cents.

I never saw Deep Purple, but, I've been told they were really loud. Rod Stewart in '79 was really loud. I think he had Carmine Appice with a massive kit. Zeppelin in '75 was ridiculous loud. That theramin "Whole Lotta Love" segment is still ringing in my ears.

Alexander said on 29/Mar/07
I'd wager 5-11.75 tops, gotta remember he was thinny and wore big boots thru the glory days, made him look taller, plus Page usuewlly wore flat soles, he is really around Bob's size maybe half inch smallest at most.
tubbs said on 13/Mar/07
This guy is pretty confusing. Saw him on the Freddie Mercury tribute concert on DVD, and when everyone who performed got on stage at the end, Plant towered over almost everyone, including Brian May, I also know a guy who is 6'1 atleast, who met him in Kidderminster and described him as around 6'3". Then I was stood next to Plant at a Wolves game about 3 years ago, and he seemed a couple of inches shorter than me. My estimation was that he was 5'11, maybe he had bad posture, but he certainly didn't look the 6'2+ guy that he has done in the past.
siri said on 12/Mar/07
"Plant always wore tremendous high heels" In the later years, yes. However in a lot of Zep footage he is wearing sandals of the indian style. very very flat shoes. never met him, but I'll buy 6ftish because back in his youth he was built a lot like my boyfriend who is 6'2. Some people look short (i.e. Tom Cruise) and lie about their hight, but Percy just looks tall. Weight gain and age may make him appear shorter if he isn't actually, or he may just slouch.
Brad said on 6/Mar/07
He's lost height. In Zeppelin he wore big heels and stood tall with his head back, nowadays he's onstage in sneakers or Moroccan slipper things and kinda bent over. Looks smaller. His head got wider, big time.

You won't believe it, etc., but Purple's 1st choice to replace Blackmore in '93 was Michael Schenker! Out of the frying pan. Musically, it would've been incredible, but MS had just rejoined UFO (and, despite all the aggro, they made 3 brilliant albums with him). Satriani was suggested by Mr.Udo, Japanese promoter. He did a fantastic job. Steve Morse joined in '95, and has done great work with what is now Deep Purple Mk.8! One listen to Sometimes I Feel Like Screaming will show that DP CAN exist without RB (and Blackmore is a huge fan of Bolin, Satriani and Morse!). Sorry, off topic...

Steve Morse looks taller than he is. Good posture? He pilots small 'planes a lot. He's pretty much the same as Roger Glover - 2 inches or so shorter than Blackmore. So Gillan looks taller than ever, especially now he's really slim!
D. Ray Morton said on 2/Nov/06
Thanks, Glenn. You're probably right on Morse. I've only met him a couple of times, last time in '94. For some reason I remember him being a little taller than me, though I'm pretty sure he was wearing boots, too.
5'9" seems right for Browne, the more photos I see. I did meet him once - when I was five. (Obviously, he was a little taller than me at the time!)
Good call on James Jamerson.
I've asked before, but how tall was Jaco?
Forgot to add Pretty Purdie to the drummer list. Not sure on his height, but think around 5'6".
Anthony said on 2/Nov/06
James was brilliant. The Funk Brothers as a whole are incredibly underrated. If anyone gets a chance to see "Standing In The Shadows Of Motown", it's well worth it.
"Steve Wonder (5'11")"
Stevie's more 6'1.
And as far as vocalists go, though I lmited mine strictly to rock, I don't think there was a vocalist quite like Sinatra. Though the man didn't play his own instrument or write his own songs, I consider him a genius. Stevie Van Zant said that Sintra's tyle and voice were so unique and distinct that it was as if he had rewritten the song just for him. Once Frank sang a song, it was all his.

James Jamerson Jr. is in the top 5 bassists of all time. That bozo Berry Gordy Jr. didn't even leave him a ticket for the Motown 25 Special. He died almost broke. His beat sold millions of Motown Records. Keith Moon was the best drummer I've ever seen though he was all over his kit splashing cymbals and standing up doing jokes etc.. Plant seems to think his tours without Page are as good as without. No Robert, good, not great. John Paul Jones is the greatest rock arranger.

I suppose amongst metalheads, Joh may be ignored, but whenever I get into a discussion on bassists in general, meatl, orkc or otherwise, Entwistle is generally the first or one of the first brought up when discussing th best. I have to admit as a Zeppelin fan, JPJ, while no doubt an excellent bassist, was even better at other instruemtns. He was a fantastic keyboardist, and he plays the best mandolin I've ever heard on "Going To California".

Glenn, I wouldn't call Entwistle underrated at all, nor would I call him overrated. John gets all the respect he deserves. Whenever I have discussions about Best Bassist, he's always the first name to come up.
Personal Faves For Me:
Lead Singers
Plant (6'1 peak / 5'11.5 now)
Daltrey (5'6)
Jagger (5'9 / 5'10)
Mercury (5'9)
Ray Davies (5'11.75) (Hey Glenn, ever met Ray?)
Guitarists
Page (6' peak / 5'11 now)
Hendrix (I've seen 5'11 but I think more 5'9-ish)
Clapton (5'9)
Townshend (6'1-6'2 peak, 6' nowadays)
Richards (5'9)
Bass
John Entwistle (I'd say 5'10-ish, that 5'8 seems a bit low. John had a tendency to look as tall as Pete, something a guy of 5'8 wouldn't be able to normally do)
Paul McCartney (5'11 peak / 5'10 now)
John Paul Jones (5'8)
Bill Wyman (5'6)
Roger Deacon (5'9)
Singer / Songwriters
Dylan (5'6)
Marley (5'6)
Wonder (6'1 at least)
Lennon (5'10)
Nick Cave (6'2.5)

Great idea, Glenn.
Guitarists: Blackmore (5'11"), Schenker (Michael) (5'10"), Moore (Gary) (5'8"), Santana (5'9"), and Page (5'11"). Also rate Mick Ralphs (5'10"), who's technically great, but not as fast as the others.

Elton John 5'6
Billy Joel 5'4
Ray Manzareck 6'0.5
Ian McLagan 5'5
Stevie Wonder 6'1 minimum (I really do think the even 6' he's listed at is too low)

Any other top 5 drummers picks? lets all pick a top 5 for each insrument, and we will also discuss height on each.cool everyone? top bass-Steve Harris5-8,Geezer5-6,Sheehan 6-2,Dennis Dunaway ?,Geddy Lee 5-10.
Anthony said on 27/Oct/06
I agree that Moon wasn't as technically accomplished as a lot of other drummers, but the man still influenced a great number of drummers and that can't be denied. I have a friend who is an incredible drummer and he cites Moon as his primary influence.
And yes, Entwistle played the bass like no one I've ever heard. The man pretty much put the bass on the map, as up until he came along it was largely shoved into the background. He made it much more prevalent to the point where it became almost like a lead instrument. I'm not much as a musician, so I wouldn't know.
Top 5 Bassists for me: The Ox, McCartney, JPJ, Wyman, Deacon.
Glenn said on 27/Oct/06
I respect that Anthony.Moon never did anything for me though.great indeed.Enthwistle on the other hand blew my mind.maybe cause Im more a bass player.
Anthony said on 26/Oct/06
Sorry, but any Top 5 without Moon is invalid to me. No offense. My picks
Bonham
Moon
Watts
Paice
Taylor

Glenn - Have wondered how tall Cozy Powell (who played on Plant's 1st solo album) is, for ages. Any idea, please? My guess is 5'10" - almost as tall as Blackmore, a bit taller than Glover.
Glenn said on 10/Oct/06
I never saw Paul in my life.my guess was 5-8.guess Im wrong.Marc Bolan I forgot about hearing he was short.yeah,I think I heard 5-5.
Middle-sized Cat said on 6/Oct/06
I heard Paul Rodgers was actually 5'4". Ronnie James Dio expressed annoyance that "Paul Rodgers and Marc Bolan never got the 'short' jibes (I) get!" So they must all be similarly small. Tallest Bad Company man is Mick Ralphs (5'10",0,0); Burrell and Kirke are both 5'9", I believe.
Anthony said on 5/Oct/06
I'd say Rogers is 5'6 as well, especially if Plant is 5'11-is nowadays. I see about 5 inches between them. Rodgers comes just below Plant's eye level.
Slickster7 said on 5/Oct/06
How tall is Paul Rodgers? I'm guessing about 5ft 5" or 5ft 6" barefoot. I think I remember reading in the accompanying booklet with Free's 'Songs Of Yesterday' box set that Paul Rodgers was under 5 ft 6" when he joined Free back in 1968 (he would've been 19, approaching 20, back then . . . he might have grown an inch or two after that, though). These days Paul Rodgers wears shoes with relatively big heels (an inch-and-a-half), and probably wears lifts (reason I say this is because he's completely transformed his image over the past 5 years; now he's all sun-tanned, hair-implanted and wears flashy clothes at his live concerts . . . a guy of his short stature would, imo, take the time to look taller, too). I'd say Rodgers is at the max 5ft 7" barefoot. Realistically, though, he's probably 5ft 6".

I met hiim a few years ago and he was definitely over 6'. I would have guessed 6'2 and he was in sneakers, 6'1 seems reasonable.
Danimal said on 1/Oct/06
Plant also performed on Letterman 9 years later and was a bit shorter than his 1993 performance.
Chris said on 24/Sep/06
Great find Danimal. Plant wore boots and looked the same height as Letterman.
Danimal said on 18/Sep/06
A great comparison. Robert performing on Letterman in 1993. Neither man lost any height by this point(both around 45). Wait until the end of the song to see them standing next to each other. Dave WAS 6'2":

Glenn is not lying. Plant was at least 6'1 in the Zeppelin days, and still looked it up until a few years ago. He's a tall man.
Also, here's some further proof:
Click HereThe guy next to Plant is Peter Grant, their road manager. He was at least 6'2. Plant is no more than inch shorter.
mcfan said on 15/Sep/06
TaylorJ, I never said Plant was 6'1 or 6'2. I've always heard 6ft for Plant and judging from him around other people of similar height, 6ft seemed right. It was his cowboy boots with 2.5 inch heels that he always wore in the concerts that made him look almost 6'3. He might very well be 5'11 now because he is almost 60.
Middle-sized Cat said on 15/Sep/06
I saw JPJ in my local newsagent 20 years ago. I was almost 5'11" then (am nearer 5'10" now, following back trouble), and JPJ was 5'8-and-a-bit. If the guy I thought was Plant once, 6'3" seems about right. Page and Bonham were both 6' in the '70s.
Glenn said on 15/Sep/06
Wait till you see my pic where Plant looks 6-4 next to me! in heels of course.Taylor, get a life.

Quinn-For you to take the time and write that is sad.if you find all this stupid, your even more stupid and have no life to write that.this forum isnt for everyone and its not intended for putting down people.its sole purpose is the mystery of the varying heights of celeb.such as 5-7 to 6-1.5 sightings of Stallone.have fun elsewhere.
Quinn said on 10/Sep/06
whats the big deal man? really. i love robert plant more then anything in the world. he is the only person i idolize but you dont see me talking for half an hour about how tall he is and how tall he is in his boots. you are just trying to think you guys know soo much about him and are the biggest fans with all this information but your not any of that. it doesnt matter how tall he is or how short he is, hes the same person he has always been and thats what i love. but you people are f***ed.
Glenn said on 5/Sep/06
