I think 187-187.5cm prime. Could pass for 6ft2 in Last Picture Show and Thunderbolt & Lightfoot. Wasn't dwarfed by Eastwood or George Kennedy
Today he is looking 6ft flat a lot but might still clear it when measured....

jeff always looked about 6'1".I think his peak height was just over that,1.86m.No more than that.He claimed 6'2" probably added a little to his height like most people in Hollywood even though he is tall enough and didnt need to add any height. He never looked 1.88m,something like Sean Conenry which is 6'2".
Gerald S said on 29/May/23
Bridges often struck me as a rock solid 6’1” in his prime. 6’2” John Goodman had 1-2 inches on Bridges in The Big Lebowski, although footwear and posture was on Goodman’s side, accounting for any excess over an inch height difference between these two.

@hong Ryan's heel isn't shown in the picture, but based on the type of shoes he is wearing it is safe to say that they definitely have a somewhat significant heel on them. That said, bridges is wearing some massive heels, but it also roughly an inch taller than 6'2 1/8" Reynolds in this picture. Accounting for both of their shoes, I would say it is safe to assume Bridges is about 6'0.5" here. I think Bridges had a 6'1.5"-6'2" peak, and is now approximately 6'0.5".

The average guess for Jeff's peak is believeable for his height in late 50's, but I very much doubt he was any less than the listed height in his prime. His shrinkage seems to have followed the average 1 cm loss every decade past 40's, from near 187 cm in his prime to 185-186 range through 50's, 184-185 range through 60's and 183-184 range near 70. Shrinkage like that is normal, someone like Morgan Freeman who didn't shrink much between 60 and 70 isn't normal.

Got edged by Bruce Boxleitner and David Warner in Tron though
Philip S said on 27/Jan/20
He's easily 6 1/2", most likely back in the day he was a full inch taller than that. Always had a commanding, strong presence and even managed to inhabit a John Wayne character (True Grit) and make us not miss his predecessor.
Not to be contrary, but the below post describes the 1993 remake of a 1988 Dutch film, which shares the title of "The Vanishing." The US version izes the plot of the earlier film and ruins the tense, unsettling atmosphere with typical Hollywood heroics. The 80's version, which will require subtitles for those who do not speak Dutch, is the far superior and artistically honest production. Please seek this out and, if the curiosity strikes you, contrast this version with its Hollywood remake. It's a good example of how big studios can sabotage artistic ambition by compromising an artist's vision - although, oddly, they share the same director. It's kind of like if David Fincher re-made "Se7en," but changed the ending to be more conventional. A real bummer.
Miss Sandy Cowell said on 11/Jan/20
I reckon Jeff could carry off 6ft2 in the earlier parts of the day, certainly I do, in his younger years.
I have just started watching his movie 'The Vanishing', and it's already sent me shivering to my very core, as he fantasizes about kidnapping young women and holding a tissue covered in an anesthetic to their faces to knock them out. The full horror of what this film has in store for us is not revealed for yet awhile but I remember on first seeing this how shocked I was.
The film hails from 1993, opening in February of that year. Chances are it was made the year before, Jeff being 42/43 at the time, so I'll be watching him at his peak height in this. I know that last time I saw it, I was thinking how tiny the 5ft7 Sandra Bullock looked next to him, but that has a lot to do with her proportions and his tallness.
I'm going for 6ft1.75 peak and 6ft0.75 now for this excellent actor.
Yes, Jeff plays a baddie in this; one completely contrasting role of his is the part he plays in 'Arlington Road'. Both films are psychological thrillers and about as tense as they come!

Jeff seems a guy who doesn't care much about how tall he is, he is often very loose and leaning in posture. Sometimes in combination with a bit of height loss, he can seem an under six foot guy nowadays with younger actors over the six foot mark (i.e. Ryan Reynolds, Chris Pine, etc.) but is probably in the range of 6'0.25" straightened out today.

He's standing in a canal, forming a big bridge, and magnified to god-like proportions, so it's no good if you're trying to judge his height from it! However, with my large collection of his films, I know the guy is tall. If you want to see him at his peak, try to see the 70's version of 'King Kong'. About 8 years Bridges made a movie called " A Dog Year" in the the small upstate NY community I live in. It was a very big event for people in the area. I never met Bridges, but many people did and he was the main topic of conversation for a few weeks. Everyone I talked to, that had met him, commented on how nice he was. They also commented on how much shorter he was than he appeared on the screen. No one thought he was taller than 5' 10".

Hmmmm, Jeff looks 2cm taller than Arnie, but he´s in 2cm footwear and Arnie barefoot - so both were pretty close the same height.
But 6´1.5"?
This vid was at Arnies page, includes Robert Englund in about same footwear as Jeff.
Can´t see how Jeff and Arnie can be 1,87m next to Englund who was 5´10.25"-10.5" in footwear back then.
Jeff clearly doesn´t look 4 inches taller.
6´1" peak and 6´2" in solid footwear

Are we sure Bridges wasn't 6'2 when he was young? I say that because I just watched a fairly obscure movie from 1975 staring Arnold Schwartznegger and Bridges and there are many many scenes of them together sometimes face to face I would say Bridges is .5 inches to an inch taller then Arnold. Its called Stay Hungry. So either Arnold was never taller then a weak 6'1 or Jeff was right about 6'2 or very close to it as a young man.

@ Nik - Hi! I never knew that Mark Charnock was in the film 'Before Dawn'! I have seen it and it's quite a nifty little film, setting a tense atmosphere between an arguing married couple, who have gone away for a break to sort their lives out! You end up thinking, "So you thought you had problems before? Get your teeth into this..."
It's been on the 'Horror Channel', and though I'm not a zombie enthusiastic, I will watch them if there is a good storyline! It stars Dominic Brunt with his real-life wife!
I had no idea that the two 'Emmerdale' boys produce an annual zombie event in Leeds! That sounds interesting and I would probably go along if it took place nearer to where I live, just to see who is there out of the celeb world, a bit like Rob does, only without the ulterior motive of taking in their heights for a celeb-based website! I'd have to admit to them that I'm interested in stars as well as their heights, which is true!
Back to Jeff Bridges then! I do recommend the film 'The Vanishing', but it isn't a feel-good film at all! Neither is 'Arlington Road', but the character Jeff plays in the latter film is a good deal easier to like! He plays a caring father, who has recently been made a widower, but encounters unbelievable dangers from his nasty neighbours!
I wouldn't hesitate to buy anything with Jeff Bridges in it, as he hasn't let me down yet on the acting front! He is only ever utterly compelling!

Hi Sandy!
There is a tendency to get really excited whenever you fulfil an ambition, like you were when you got yourself a copy of the film "The Vanishing". You must have been really keen to get hold of a copy of this film so why shouldn't you get excited about doing just that! I have in the past got really excited over so called "silly little things" too, there is nothing wrong with that at all!
It sounds like a really interesting film and it must have given you a lot of pleasure to watch it, it wouldn't be a bad idea to get a copy myself, on yours and Rob's recommendation!
You will have had that many great and interesting conversations with HMV staff, the conversation you had about Dominic Brunt appearing in a horror/thriller-type film was fascinating, was this film called "Before Dawn"? Dominic Brunt and Mark Charnock both starred in this film, Mark Charnock I believe was a Zombie!
Dominic Brunt is a horror enthusiast and both he and Mark Charnock are obsessed with Zombies! Both of these gentlemen produce a yearly Zombie Film Festival in the Leeds City Varieties theatre. Also Mark Charnock was born in Bolton, so many TV personalities seem to come from this Greater Manchester town! Both my paternal grandparents lived in Bolton for the latter part of their lives.
Finally I have searched the Internet and found out the name of the first serious film that Jeff Bridges starred in, it was called "Halls of Anger"!
Cheers mate!
Sandy Cowell said on 14/May/17
@ Nik - You're not the first person to say that I get excited over silly little things! I do, and it's completely genuine too!
The reason I was so very excited this particular time is that I'd been thinking about the film within the past few days. I was writing down the films of various actors and actresses at the time - ones I own, I must hasten to add - which I'm still doing now, and when I got to Jeff Bridges, I was doing some reminiscing on his film front and that one was the one that really stuck out performance-wise! It was also mentioned in a programme about psychopaths, his character in the film fitting the criteria to a tee!
Funnily enough, I've had some great conversations with HMV staff as well as boring - and shocking them! One bloke I met in HMV Bromley told me how he'd met Dominic Brunt from 'Emmerdale', adding that he was a thoroughly nice person and was working on a horror/thriller-type film at the time of their meeting! I bought the film and it was great!
Jeff Bridges' films are of a consistently high standard and as I've said before, I haven't yet been disappointed! But I do recommend 'The Vanishing'; Rob likes it as well!
See you later! 👍

As I remember he was taller than Arnold Schwarzenegger in 'Stay Hungry'. What does this mean? I could mean that I am misremembering. It could mean that Arnold was shoeless. Or could it be that Arnold wasn't as tall as he claimed?
Jani said on 11/May/17
I would say that this one is pretty accurate. In the movie Stay Hungry he is about 0.5 inch taller than Arnold because Arnie does not have shoes on so both of their peaks at 187cm seems logical.
Nik said on 10/May/17
@Sandy Cowell - Hi!
I cannot remember the name of the first serious film that he starred in, however you have made me curious about this so I will surf the web to find out after writing this comment! Is "The Vanishing" your favourite Jeff Bridges film? You sounded jolly pleased at getting it, people may have thought you had won the lottery! Seriously though you don't and shouldn't have to win millions of pounds (let's face it it's not likely!!) to be happy and it's nice to hear that getting this film meant so much to you! Don't worry about boring the staff at the HMV, I've done that before in different places! I know people are bored when they stand (or sit) there quietly and look into space when I am speaking, it has happened before on a few occasions! What seaside town were you in when you got this film?
I think it's great what you say about Livielia climbing Christmas trees, a dog wouldn't be able to do that because they are not as agile as cats and they are generally heavier, cats really love to climb too and the site of a cat on a Christmas tree is a very interesting one! Yes you have said before about your boyfriend inheriting Bogerley, at least you know she is going to a good home!
I was surprised at Jeff looking so much bigger than Olivia Wilde, I thought that she was 5'7" but maybe I was mistaken! She wouldn't have looked much much smaller if she was so tall!
Well no Christopher Walkden will not be quite as tall as Jeff Bridges was, at 6'1.5" Jeff will have edged him out! We talked about a lot of female actresses being tall, I think the same applies to male actors!
Cheers Sandy!
Sandy Cowell said on 9/May/17
@ Nik - Hi! That's news to me that Jeff made his first serious movie in 1970! He'll only have been 20 then! I wonder what it was, and I will have to find out now!
Yes, I don't half recommend this guy's films. He does a shockingly good psychopath, the sort whose pulse simply wouldn't rise one iota at what he's up to. You MUST see 'The Vanishing'! I was SO pleased when I found myself a copy last Summer, just before I was on the internet. I skipped all down the street; that was after jumping up and down in the HMV of this particular seaside town, and boring the staff with how funny the other film I was buying is! (That was Blitz, starring
Jason Statham and Paddy Considine!)
As far as the cats go, Peelio and Livielia are about the same size, but Peelio is much plumper! Livielia climbs - and sits in - Christmas trees, but Peelio would knock things flying with the extra bit of weight! I have 7 boy cats and 11 girls, 12 if I include Bogerley, who now lives with my boyfriend and is very happy!
I'm not surprised Jeff looks so much bigger than Olivia Wilde, who is petite and very pretty! I have a blinding horror film with her in it!
I'm certainly going to check out this Jeff Bridges film from 1970, Nik! I've just finished today watching Christopher Walken's first major film - from 1972! These early productions are ideal for finding the stars at their optimum heights - that's assuming they are fully grown, and Christopher Walken looked very much like a man in this one. He could have been as tall as 6ft1 almost, but not as tall as Jeff Bridges! See you later! 👍
Nik said on 9/May/17
@ Sandy Cowell - Hi!
Yes he first appeared in a film when he was a baby, but he didn't appear in another one until 1970! Yes he really does come from an acting family however I didn't know the names of his Dad and brother, thanks for telling me their names!
I have seen pictures on the internet of Jeff Bridges with Olivia Wilde and he towers over her even though she has got high heels on!
Is Peelio your smallest cat? Also how many boy cats and how many girl cats have you got?
Cheers mate!
Sandy Cowell said on 7/May/17
@ Nik - Hi! Jeff must have starred as a baby then, as he was born in December 1949! I didn't know that before so I learnt something about him! Thank Nik!
His father Lloyd Bridges is also an actor, and that might help to explain why he was chosen to be in a film in 1951! He also has an actor brother called Beau, all facts of which you probably know already! Jeff is by far my favourite!
So you've just checked out Joan Cusack! She's far taller than I imagined, but she did play the wife of the huge Tim Robbins in 'Arlington Road', so it makes sense that a tall actress was chosen for the part!
My youngest cat is the little black chubby kitten-cat Porkypine - though she is far from fat. She will be 5 next month! Peelio was bought at the same time and she is 5 this month, but even smaller! These two were ill and rescued from a tumbledown pet shop which was in the local papers for its inefficiency at nurturing young animals, and now it isn't allowed to sell them. The two kittens needed a lot of courses of treatment to nurse them into healthy specimens, but they certainly are now!
Have a great week mate!
Nik said on 6/May/17
@Sandy Cowell - Hi!
Jeff Bridges has starred in films since 1951 and as you know he is still acting now and will be featured in 2 more films which will be out this year! Is he one of your favourite actors?
Like you I also think it's great that Joan Cusack starred In different film genres and it's always very good when actors and actresses can be flexible In this way! I have just gone on to her page and found out that she is 5'8.5"! So she is yet another tall actress, ironically the regularity of tall actresses is something we are in the process of discussing on the page of Patricia Tallman!
Now onto Jeff Bridges' height, I don't have any idea what his peak height was but I certainly think that he is 6'0.5", I doubt that he is any smaller than this!
Yes the films you mentioned are certainly worth keeping an eye on, I will look into them!
Finally onto your cats, which of your cats is the youngest and how old is he/she?
Cheers!
Sandy Cowell said on 5/May/17
@ Nik - Hi! I thought we should ideally come to Jeff Bridges' page for the purpose of discussing his films! I have a very minimum of 6 of his movies, probably quite a few more! My favourites are 'The Vanishing', and 'Arlington Road'. The latter also stars a creepy and sinister couple, played brilliantly by the extremely tall Tim Robbins and also Joan Cusack as his wife! Joan usually does comedies, so I was impressed to see that she does broaden her horizons, starring in completely different film genres.
Of course, starring with someone as tall as Tim is hardly going to show Jeff's height off! I reckon he was 6ft1.5 at his peak, and that is more than evident in the film 'The Vanishing', where you can see how small 5ft6 Sandra Bullock is next to him and how easy it is for him to kidnap her!
Kiefer Sutherland, who at about 5ft8.5-9, is a great deal smaller than his Dad, Donald, also looks small in comparison to Jeff, so I will put 6ft1.5 for his peak height and 6ft0.5 for his height today. Both films are fantastic, and 'The Door in the Floor', Jagged Edge', 'The Men Who Stare at Goats' and 'Crazy Heart', the film of him playing a problem drinker, are all well worth a watch!

His poor hapless victim is Sandra Bullock and, though 5ft 6.5 - 7, she looks tiny and defenseless when compared to him. Granted, she was wearing flats, but it was the scene in the car which brought to my attention the size of this guy, certainly at the time this film was made! Definitely well over 6ft, methinks!
Editor Rob
yes, I thought Jeff was good in that film. I do think it's clear he's now lost a bit of height from his peak. How much exactly? A full inch is very arguable.

In this recent pic with his father Beau Bridges....

He's seems to look not much taller than his father, but to b fair he is dropping posture and he has much less shoe advantage. So a bit over 5'11" is possible. I remember he didn't look taller than Anson Mount in the 2006 tv series Conviction.

Beau Bridges is barely 5'10, and Jeff looks about the same height in many pictures with his brother. I think Jeff might have been a little over 6 feet in his prime, not more. Probably 6 feet and a half at peak.

189cm out of bed with 187cm before bed is really more 6ft1¾ which you could argue for him in his 20's. He looked 6ft2 in Last Picture Show and Thunderbolt & Lightfoot. Didn't get towered by Eastwood or George Kennedy.

I've heard that tall people can be more prone to back trouble than shorter people. Not sure if they shrink more. I think Clint Eastwood is somewhat unusual. Christopher Lee was at least as tall probably taller with a lean build but mostly kept his height into old age.

Michael Cimino who directed Thunderbolt and Lightfoot mentions in a short interview on the French bluray of the same film that Eastwood and Bridges were both very tall. I am always a little surprised at how posters on this site will argue over fractions of an inch. I just want to know, tall, medium or short, and/or lying about it? My favorite look-ups are actors who are about five-foot eight who are claiming to be tall. So I'm a big fan of the Tom Cruise and Kirk Douglas and Johnny Depp pages.

I am really confused about the movie, "Stay Hungry", from the 1970s. I saw this movie originally back in the '90s thinking Arnold Schwarzenegger was 6'2", so I'm thinking Bridges is probably 6'3"- made sense, he always seemed tall to me, and towered over his brother, Beau, who I always put in more the average range- 5'8"-5'9". But then in the past decade or so, I find out Bridges is only 6'1"-?? WTF?? Now I hear Arnie was measured at 6'1.5"- as a bodybuilder I have to assume that was barefeet-?? So is it possible Jeff's peak was actually more in the 6'2" area- which he himself claimed at one time-?? Maybe he's lost an inch or so (he is in his 60s now)-??

Trying to get him 10 credits and a tough call, The Last Picture Show I guess should be it but I also enjoy Fat City, Bad Company, Thunderbolt and Lightfoot, Cutter's Way, Tucker: A Man and His Dream, The Fisher King and Fearless. He's gotten better as an actor with more age and gravitas, as he was fantastic in his two w/ the Coens and Crazy Heart. Bridges was no match for De Niro, Hoffman, Pacino or the other more serious guys in the 70s but his late career has been better than those guys.

If you look at pictures, you notice how loose his posture can be too. I do believe after all the movies I've seen him in, however, that he was a solid 6'1" at peak. He could have lost almost an inch by now though.

Weak 6'2" for his peak. In 1974's THUNDERBOLT & LIGHTFOOT, Eastwood has a minimum of 2" and a bit of change on Bridges. Likewise, another poster mentioned 1973's THE LAST AMERICAN HERO. There is a scene at a party in which Bridges stands face-to-face with B movie/biker legend William Smith. Smith was a strong 6'2" in his prime, and Bridges looked a hair shorter (hair = 1" or less) than Big Bill.

Somewhere there's an old vinyl on a turntable locked in a groove. It's your inaccurate estimating at work again. No, your precious little "solid 6ft is the fact" AIN'T the fact, jack. The guy was a solid 6'1" in his youth--a weak 6'2" even well up into the '90s. He has at least 3" on his older sibling, Beau--but I wouldn't expect you to know that since you've never seen 1988's THE FABULOUS BAKER BOYS. Start paying attention to the films and compare the actors properly instead of haphazardly guessing.

T-Bone (I have no idea who he is) but T-Bone looked half a foot taller than Jeff Bridges, so I looked him up expecting him to be 6'7" and he was listed at 6'4". John's photo below of Jeff with Beau is also revealing - I would have expected at least a two-inch height difference if not more, but he looks barely an inch taller than his older brother. A mitigating factor is that Bridges does slouch a lot. He's probably about 6'0.5" at present. I doubt he was ever a
legitimate 6'2", though clearly near it in "Thunderbolt and Lightfoot" (1974).

The more I watch his stuff--older & newer--the more I like him. He never looked anything more than 2"-2.5" shorter next to either of those actors.
Also, in 1995's WILD BILL, there is a scene in which his Wild Bill Hickok stands next to Keith Carradine's Buffalo Bill Cody. Carradine always looked to me as the perfect example of a 6'1" man. Bridges looked 6'1" next to Carradine--with perhaps the slightest of edges going to Bridges, and this being because his boots looked to have a bit more heel than Carradine's.
Saw him a few months back in TRUE GRIT. 6'1" looks correct for him. Now that he's in his 60s, he looks to me like he's getting a bit of the old man's hump on his back. The Dude doesn't have the greatest posture nowadays.

Ronan said on 31/Jan/11
Back at his peak ie 185/186cm next to Eastwood in t and l,looked about 2.25 inches smaller
FrankStallone said on 23/Jan/11
In the movie Stay Hungry he looked about a half inch taller than Arnold. But Arnold was barefeet in a lot of their scenes.
Rampage(-_-_-)Clover said on 20/Jan/11
182cm is a bit low...6"1 max today I suppose maybe even 184cm.
At peak Id say 6"1.5 to 6"2...
Anonymous said on 6/Jan/11
I could buy 6'2 easily. Nothing less than 6'1.
Larc186-188cm said on 27/Dec/10
Nowhere near 185 today, looks 182 max.
Rampage(-_-_-)Clover said on 21/Dec/10
He looks 185cm-186cm nowadays...a solid 6"1
At peak he was 6"1.5-6"1.75

John Goodman IS 6'2" I would know.
Larc186-188cm said on 11/Dec/10
Today with Kevin Spacey (who is around 177cm) he looks around 182-183 at most, I bet he never was 6'2, but just 6'1.
john said on 4/Dec/10
nowadays, just a bit taller than his elder brother Beau

I could tell from all the movies he has been in that he was at least 6' 1" but in any case how ever tall he is, he has managed to pack a VERY POWERFUL actor in his frame. My wife and I don't miss one of his movies!

187-188cm.
Ahleks said on 20/Jun/09
I'd say 6'2" in his younger days. He looked pretty tall.
Hugh 190cm said on 9/Jun/09
a weak 6ft2 like Carrey and Brosnan.
Lenad said on 9/May/09
I'd say a very strong 6'1 like 186-187cm.

This picture is just bizarre:
Click HereBridges looks about 4-5" shorter than Danny Huston (listed 6'1.5") and about 1" taller than Simon Pegg (listed 5'9").
Lenad said on 4/May/09
At peak I'd say a strong 6'1 possibly a weak 6'2
Lenad said on 18/Apr/09
185-186cm for Bridges. Probably 186-187cm barefoot in his younger days
Hugh 190cm said on 17/Apr/09
And Goodman looked like he could have been a bit over 6ft2 in Big Lebowski. He looked massive. Brideges I'd say is 6ft1.5 and Goodman 6ft2.5.
Lenad said on 8/Apr/09
He just could not have been shorter than 6ft1. 186cm is probably closer to the truth.
Hugh 190cm said on 28/Mar/09
I thought he looked barely shorter than Goodman.
Leung said on 26/Mar/09
The Big Lebowski is one of my favourite Coen bros movies.
Bridges mostly wore thin sandals and had loose posture in The Big Lebowski therefore it is not an ideal movie for judging his height. In my opinion Bridges always looks tall, certainly nothing under 6

187cm-188cm peak perhaps. He does look quite tall there with Glenn.
_-_-_-(Hugh)-_-_-_/ said on 10/Mar/09
I'm suprised by this listing seeming he did look a little taller than pierce Brosnan who I always considered a 6ft2 guy himself.
Doug said on 7/Mar/09
Always looks a perfect example of a 6'2" guy to me.
\\_-_-_-Hugh-_-_-_/ said on 5/Mar/09
Brotha is about right with those. He still looks over 6ft1 now.
brotha said on 28/Feb/09
Looked tall in Thunderbolt and Lightfoot, with Eastwood. I'd say 6'2" in the 70's and still 6'1.5" today.
\\-_-_-(Hugh)-_-_-// said on 23/Feb/09
No worries Glenn. Jeff does look close to 6ft2 in that picture. Possibly 6ft2 in his prime. I will not accept anything less than 6ft1.
Christian said on 20/Jan/09
I have never seen Jeff Bridges listed as anything else than 6'1'', I think he is spot on 6'1'' and that is 185.42 cm.
glenn said on 12/Jan/09

184cm seems too low. 186cm I'd say.
Gago said on 10/Jan/09
Met him yesterday, in casuals, first looked 6'0, but then when I talked to him, I'll say nothing over 6'1, possibly 184.
Hugh said on 6/Jan/09
6ft1.25 now and say 6ft1.75 peak. He hasn't lost much height.
