@Rob: I agree overall, but if I were only guessing based on the film and promotional appearances for it, I would have guessed Sly was taller: Click Here Sly and Kurt appear at about 1 minute.

I think the difference is Sly was 5'9" max while Kurt was 5'9" minimum, though Sly could appear 5'10.5"-5'11" due to footwear. Sly, Kurt and Mel Gibson were all somewhat enigmatic, especially compared to each other, although Kurt doesn't strike me as height conscious like the other two. I can't recall seeing Kurt and thinking he wore lifts outside of Tombstone or seeing him tip-toe.

I think 5'9.25" is still fair overall and he can pass for 5'10" because he's often worn cowboy boots, although not as thick as some of the ones Gibson has worn. I should go back and rewatch Unlawful Entry to see if he was closer to 2" or 2.5" shorter than 5'11.5" peak Ray Liotta. I do remember that Dark Blue with Ving Rhames was an occasion where he looked more 5'9" max.

I wouldn't rule out anything from 5'9" to 5'9.5", but 5'10" is definitely too much. Btw, I believe Kurt was taller than Stallone, it's just weird how Stallone pulled off looking solidly taller in the film and behind the scenes of the film. Some of that is Stallone wearing lifts, but you still wouldn't guess he was shorter. And again, wasn't he shorter than 5'9.5" listed Jason Scott Lee in Soldier? I know Lee got listed 5'10" and 5'11" in his heyday, but I haven't heard many argue he's under listed here.

And Stallone's shoes rarely give 3"+ actual height. Many would say Burt Reynolds wore even bigger footwear, but his elevator boots had a 2.5" heel and 1.5" lift so even those would only give 3" to 3.5" max. Rob tested a pair of the Hogan sneakers Stallone has often worn and confirmed they add 2". He will tell you that even if Stallone added more than the 2 cm insole, he still wasn't getting 3"+ from Hogan sneakers.

It would be good to confirm he claims 5'10". I could almost buy the possibility of 5'9.5" peak with the 5'10.5" figure from his baseball days being in shoes, but that doesn't add up if Jason Scott Lee was also 5'9.5". Still strange that Kurt appeared to have about 2 cm on Mel Gibson. Kurt could look 5'9.5" at times or even 5'10". Yet he struggled with 5'9" flat at other times.


@Cjcjcj: Some of your comments are strange and again, you're attempting to justify yourself by reading things into my comment that aren't actually there. Nowadays, in the US, the younger generations of white males(below 40) is 5'10" or a little over, iirc. The overall average for all American men of all races is about 5'9.25" last I checked it 176 cm. My entire point is that 5'9" is a solid height, particularly when you exclude the younger generations. I mention this in Stallone's case because he's a baby boomer of partial Italian descent. Some of the men on the Italian side of my own family are actually much shorter than Stallone. There's nothing to argue about. You're wishing I stated something inaccurate so you can correct me, but I didn't so you have to insist I implied it.

Back to Kurt, one poster said that Kurt claimed 5'10" in a BBC interview with Barry Norman while another said they asked Kurt on a film set and he responded that he was 5'10". I tend to believe he claimed this height, but I've never seen the BBC interview myself and the latter story obviously can't be confirmed.

Sometimes Kurt could seem no more than 5'9" flat such as with Ving Rhames in Dark Blue, Stallone in Tango and Cash and Jason Scott Lee in Soldier. Other times, he seems like he could even be 5'9.5". Tequila Sunrise is a clear example as he can look 2 cm taller than Gibson with perhaps a fraction more footwear. Based on the Parkinson example alone, if Parkinson was 5'10" flat in 2002 then Mel could have been anywhere from just under 5'9" peak or 175 cm flat to maybe just scraping 176 cm. I think he was 5'9" flat overall so Kurt seemed 5'9.5" in comparison considering footwear. I think Andy Garcia's 5'9" listing is pretty much spot on for his peak so Kurt would have to seem at least 5'9.25"-5'9.5" in The Mean Season.

To review, Kurt could look about 2 cm taller in Tequila Sunrise: Click Here Also, there are photos of Kurt, Mel and Goldie Hawn around 1990ish that show Kurt taller yet again.

I don't see any possible way Kurt could be 5'9.25" and Mel 5'9.5". If anything, it should be reversed as Kurt is taller on all of these separate occasions, but 5'9.5" seems too high for Kurt.

@Cjcjcj: Before you call me an "idiot," you might want to scrutinize your own reasoning. I'm obviously familiar with statistics if I know the average height for Sly and Mel's age range and race. Fewer people are aware of the averages for specific demographics than the overall average. So, yes, I'm well aware of the overall average American man being a little over 5'9", as can be proven by my other comments on this site.

But I'm happy that your reading comprehension skills are as poor as your reasoning because you gave me an additional 2 cm!

As for Stallone, only rarely has his footwear added much more than 2.5" actual height. I'm sure he's gotten 3" on occasion, maybe even 3.5", but thanks to Rob, we know for a fact that his Hogan sneakers add about 2". Maybe 2.5"-2.7" IF he put an extra lift in there, but they already come with a 2 cm insole so this is doubtful.

And I was already factoring in Stallone wearing lifts, but he could look at least 1.5" taller. This scene is one example: Click Here but he even pulled this off in a wide shot where they're walking to their cells.

And I've worn lifts too so I don't have a problem with them.

Granted, you wouldn't guess Kurt taller than Stallone based on Tango & Cash, but all other things considered, I'd say Stallone was a weak or flat 5'9" or a fraction under while Kurt was a more solid 5'9" or a fraction over, especially with Gibson and Garcia. I don't think Kurt wore lifts or is as height conscious as guys like Stallone and Gibson.

All stills and Tango & Cash considered, I'm pretty sure Russell and Stallone were pretty close to the same height, Stallone tends to hold better posture, probably sport bigger shoes and seem more height conscious overall but he could eek out a small edge but whatever it is was pretty small IMO.

Some interesting comments here but Russell's height to me needs further examination. In Tango and Cash barefooted Stallone seems to edge Russell which I'm afraid means Russell could be as low as 5ft 7. Stallone has never been taller than 5ft 8. Russell looks 5ft 8 in movies like Breakdown when playing an average Joe but in movies like Tombstone and Tequila Sunrise suddenly he looks taller than Mel Gibdon and not far off Val Kilmer.But as we know you can't seriously use movies to work out height. But the fact that both actors have bare feet in Tango and Cash is a little different. So I am going as low as 5ft 7.5.But who cares Russell is believable in any role because he has great presence which fills the screen.

Sly was maybe 174.5 to 175 cm peak. It's difficult to see Kurt as taller after watching Tango and Cash, but I'll assume Kurt was 176 cm because Kurt was clearly taller than Mel Gibson - both in Tequila Sunrise and offscreen - and I suspect Mel was likely a solid 175, though if I'm wrong and he was taller then that would indeed make Kurt 177 or so, which I can't believe. Sly and Mel have had magic footwear for decades while Kurt doesn't seem to outside of a film role like Tombstone. De Niro was probably the same 174-175 range as Sly at his peak, but 174 max at the time of Cop Land at age 53 and at least 3 cm shorter than Sly when he did Grudge Match and was pushing 70. Guys like Sly and Mel are short for action hero, but average for men of their generation and ethnicity.

One of my favourite actors. Surprised some guesses are as low in the 5'9 range - I do not believe so. Solid 5'10 at least, maybe a little more in his youth. I remember reading his height as high as 6ft on some websites years ago, which I think is unlikely. And the movies where he played "Snake Plissken" Escape from LA and New York I think, there was a running joke where some people would say to him "I thought you were taller!"

I have the 1987 film 'Overboard' on as background noise, but I couldn't help looking up on hearing Kurt's character being told off by a neighbour because his kids had 'toilet papered' her house!

That is one American custom that I learnt about through an episode of 'South Park'! For those of you who are not it the know, and are itching to find out, it involves the throwing of rolls of toilet paper all over the chosen victim's house, right from the roof downwards, so the rounding up of kids with an excellent aim and powerful throw is essential!

The 'South Park' kids left their victim's house in a very sorrowful state indeed. It was hilarious, as was the 'buying scene' in the supermarket. "Toilet paper, toilet paper, toilet paper...." said the (fairly old) shop keeper, who didn't seem to have the foggiest idea what was going on!

It is known as 'To TP someone's house'! Marvellous stuff!

I don't want to say that Kurt Russell is the best movie actor of all time because people would think I'm crazy. But what male star has ever had such range? He was noble and heroic in Tombstone, goofy and funny in Big Trouble an Little China, dour and stoic in Soldier and scary in the Tarantino flics. Bogart didn't have that much range or certainly not Pacino (the Johnny One-Note of actors).

But of course Russell isn't very big - just like Mel Gibson (the guy who created whole new genres of films). Why? Well it's probably the bell curve. Both are about of average western european male heights. The are just more men in America at 5'9" than there are at the height of the characters they play - about 6'2". There are more of them so that more of them will be geniuses.

BTW - I'm 6'4". That's about the height that most screenwriters and novelists envision for their action heroes. But we're only a sliver of the population. That's why tiny Tom Cruse plays Jack Reacher.

Several comments below putting Russell shorter than his posting here. One eye witness could be mistaken, but three? Russell just doesn't look very tall. Certainly too short to play Wyatt Earp who, regardless of his height in real life, should be played by tall actors in the movies. Harris Yulin played Earp in the movie Doc. Yulin is about five-eleven, which is still too short to play Earp.

Both 5'9" and 5'9.25" are fine for Kurt. Mel is consistently taller than 5'8" guys. I bet Kurt would have only been slightly taller if he had worn Reeboks like Mel. With that said, Kurt was taller barefoot unless he was getting near 2" from his footwear and I'd expect his shoes to have much more of an angle if that was the case: Click Here

Maybe this should go on Mel Gibson's page, but referring to the comments below, it does seem like he's had a height boost in about the past 10 yrs or so, can easily pull off the 5'9" or 5'10" he claims. I use to think Kurt was a 5'9" flat guy and no more, but now I believe Gibson and Garcia are 5'9" flat guys so Kurt at 176 cm does look like a better guess than 175. In fact, I think you could even make a case for reversing the listings for Kurt and Mel since I see 5'9.5" as plausible for Kurt, though perhaps a bit high seeing him in films like Captain Ron, Soldier, Dark Blue and Tango and Cash.

His height is hard to pinpoint. I think Kurt Russell is 5'10". In Captain Ron, Martin Short was wearing regular tennis shoes while Kurt was in slippers. I think Short had an 0.75" advantage, but Russell was 1.25 inches taller. I don't believe Martin Short is below 5'8", since he is only 4 inches shorter than Steve Martin, who still looks 6 feet tall. 1.25 inches + 0.75 inches = 2 inches, which puts Kurt Russell at 5'10" to Martin Short's 5'8" stature.

However, in Unlawful Entry, Ray Liotta, who is 6 feet tall, looked 3 inches taller Russell, but Liotta may have been wearing lifts for that movie.

If you watch captain Ron with Martin short Kurt is barefoot. Martin short is 5'6, Kurt was only an inch or and inch and a quarter taller than him even with his big hair. The proof is there on film. He's about 5'7. But who cares he's great on screen. Stallone is about the same as Kurt in tango and cash around 5'7. With lifts they can both look 5'9-5'10.

In his sizable cowboy boots from Tombstone, 5'10.5" is a believable peak claim for Kurt, he looks a bit bigger in that movie than most of his others. I think he lost the heel/lifts arms race with Stallone in Tango & Cash, a film that has not aged well lol.

A favorite actor of mine, often underrated, everything he did with John Carpenter was great (Roddy Piper was great in They Live, but let's face it would've been even better with Russell as originally intended I believe) and movies like Breakdown and Executive Decision are great 90s B-movies. I hope Tarantino continues to cast him because Russell excels at the seedy roles that Quentin writes for him.

Kurt and Mel can both look 5'10" at times, but both are fond of cowboy boots. I'd say it's a crapshoot between 5'9" and 5'9.25" for Kurt, both now and current. 5'9.5" would be an absolute max for both, though I think it's too high, especially for Mel, who I think is a flat 5'9", but no more. I'm not sure there are really any co-stars with known heights to compare Mel to in Mad Max, but I thought he gave the impression of a roughly 5'9" man. The 5'9.5" for Kurt is more difficult when you consider he was smaller than Jason Scott Lee in Soldier, who Rob lists at 5'9.5" and some have doubted he's even that tall, though he was listed 5'11" back in the 90s.

Seeing them together in Tequila Sunrise, I would have to guess Kurt is taller than Mel: Click Here Kurt did look to have a footwear advantage over Mel's Reeboks, but I don't think it was more than 1 cm. I suppose that means I should guess Kurt at 5'9.25" peak and say he's maybe lost 1/4" at 66 based purely on probability, but I'm not even sure he's lost anything. What's sort of strange is comparing Kurt to other 5-9ish guys. I'm pretty convinced Kurt was taller than Mel Gibson and Andy Garcia, both of whom I peg at 5'9" flat peak, but Kurt really didn't look taller than Stallone and could look as much as 2" shorter when Sly had lifts, yet I think 5'9" flat was the most Sly could have been. Then Kurt was clearly shorter than 5'9.25"-5'9.5" Jason Scott Lee in Soldier. All I could think of is Lee was supposed to be the physically superior soldier so perhaps they made sure to make him bigger and then Sly has magic shape shifting abilities when it comes to height.

Kurt and Andy Garcia looked very close in height throughout The Mean Season, though if I had to guess one taller from the film, I'd have said Kurt edged him. Perhaps Kurt at 5'9.25" and Garcia at 5'9" could be spot on. It's funny because a few years ago, the listings were reversed and back then, I thought those were spot on, but based on the film with all things being equal, taking the quarter inch from Garcia and giving it to Kurt seems more accurate. I believe both men typically claim 5'10", but got some 5'11" listings as well.

5'9.5" is possible if he hasn't worn lifts except for the occasion like Tombstone, but he doesn't seem anything over 5'9" at other times like with Martin Short, Ving Rhames, Sly Stallone, Oprah and Ray Liotta. Compare how much taller Adam Sandler looked with Ving Rhames than Kurt did for instance. So 5'9.5" is probably pushing. I think somewhere in the 175-176 cm range is most likely.

But this shows why Rob's job can be difficult. For instance, I think Kurt is convincingly taller than Mel Gibson in Tequila Sunrise, but I'm pretty sure both are about 5'9", maybe 5'9.25" fits for Kurt with Mel at 5'9", but then I see Kurt with Sly who I'm pretty sure was 5'8.75"-5'9" until the last few years and I have trouble seeing Kurt any taller than Sly.

For some reason, I typically don't think of Kurt's footwear the same way I do Stallone or Gibson, but those heels got me thinking and some of Kurt's shoes in past appearances on the Tonight Show, particularly 1997, '98 and to a lesser extent, 2004, at least made me wonder a bit more.

There is a very good greeting for comparison with Leno here in 2005: Click Here Kurt was definitely at his peak height and wasn't wearing cowboy boots that time, though here's a shot of the boots he was wearing: Click Here There's at least an inch difference, but less than 2", imo. So it depends on whether Leno was 5'10.5" or 5'11" at this time and what the footwear difference was. Kurt's boots are pretty thick, but I wouldn't think more than 1.3" or so.

I have to say, I really can't help but wonder about those cowboy boots. I know they're Corral boots, but he's really looking taller than he should at times. I do think 5'9.5" is possible for Kurt, more likely than it is for Mel Gibson, but it'd likely be more of a peak height since 5'9.5" Walton Goggins was about half an inch taller. But one of the rare Kurt Russell movies I don't think I've seen is Captain Ron. I believe Kurt is barefoot at times with Martin Short, who is about 5'6" so that may be able to tell us whether Kurt was ever taller than 5'9". In the stills I've seen and then a 90s premiere pic, Kurt honestly doesn't look much taller than Martin Short.

Rob, I found a 1972 article describing a 21 year old Kurt during his baseball and Disney career as "Kurt, a second baseman who stands 5-10 1/2 and weighs 170 pounds"

And then a Philadelphia Inquirer article published on Christmas Day 1983 described him as "A minute later, the compact, 5-foot-11 Russell emerged from the trailer for an interview."

Baseball doesn't list half inches, so the 5'10.5" may have been a height Kurt told the interviewer or the height Disney listed him. I'd guess 5'11" came from studio publicity. Considering Kurt told a lady from this site he was 5'10" when he was filming Art of the Steal in 2012 and told Barry Norman he was 5'10" in an old interview, he may be another Matt Damon who has tried 5'10", 5'10.5" and 5'11". Maybe even tried 5'11" and change when he played Elvis so he could say he was Elvis' height. Funny to hear "compact" though. 9 times out of 10, if someone seems "compact", they're not 5'11".

But then we have times where Kurt looks at least as tall as he claims, both recent and back in the 80s looking an inch taller than Mel Gibson! The 5'11" listings are strange. We've had 2 posters I thought were credible that reported here Kurt only claimed 5'10" himself. Looking at pictures with Goldie Hawn at premieres and assuming her to be 5'5.5" by age 60 and 5'5" currently at 70+ and her heels to be 3", Kurt can actually look a solid 176 cm at a lot of premieres, although more a weaker 5'9" on a couple occasions. I did think he looked kind of short in Breakdown, but I don't think he wears lifts unless it's needed for a movie role, so I'll say more a strong 175 cm range.

Rob I think you have this guy pinned down a bit low. His baseball stat shows 5'11". In BEST OF TIMES he was 3 inches taller than robin williams. He was a bit shorter than 5'11" val kilmer in TOMBSTONE. Not much shorter than john carpenter. Taller than 5'9" mel gibson in TEQUILA SUNRISE. He just has slump shoulders, small body but a long neck. I'd guess him at 5'10"

Another way you can tell he's short is by how large his head is in proportion to the rest of his body. In the picture above on the red carpet, with Goldie Hawn in the gold dress, you can clearly see that Kurt Russell's head is about 1/7th of his entire body length (including his head); someone genuinely tall like Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson, his head is slightly less than 1/7th of his entire body length. Same with Armie Hammer, who's 6'5". Since heads tend to be a pretty standard size (not that much variation), the height comes from the length of the body. No one who's genuinely tall has a head that looks as proportionately large as Kurt Russell's.

I love Kurt's movies but the listing is legit IMO. In Dark Blue, you can see he's wearing almost lifted boots. I can't find the full shot online, but next to 5'11" Ving Rhames they look the same height but you can see Kurt's quite generous heel.

Truth is, if he were a legit 5'11", you'd hear people mistake him for 6'0" on occasion because people tend to struggle to tell an inch difference. I'm 5'11.5" and I get 6'1" a lot. Yet, I've never, EVER heard anyone guess Kurt at 6'0". 5'9.25", maybe 5'9.5" in the past on a good day.

Nothing against the man, loves his movies, but 5'11" is total bunk and bull.

I think 5'9.25 is accurate. He just looks that tall. Slightly more than 5'9. But in much of his movies he wears boots, like in Escape from New York, Tombstone, Soldier. And let's not forget the long hair in the 80's that makes him look taller.

Where did this 5'11" nonsense come from for Kurt Russell? The guy has ALWAYS given me the impression of barely scraping 5'10". He just doesn't have the mensuration of someone 5'11" and he never looks it next to genuine 6-footers in movies. I've always believed he was closer to 5'9" than to 5'11". Maybe 5'9.25" is a little harsh, but something like 5'9.5" - 5'9.75" would be better.

FTR, I believe the historic records had the real Wyatt Earp at 6'2", so it would've made sense for Russell to somehow boost himself up a little. My own estimate for him is somewhere between 5'9" and 5'10" barefoot, so between 5'10" and 5'11" in shoes- hence the 5'11" claim. And Wolfman's comment about him being 5'5" and he told him he stands on boxes in the movies- LMMFAO!!! -thanks for the laugh!!

Russell was too short to play Wyatt Earp because, regardless of how tall the real Earp was, the fictional Earp must always be tall. So in Tombstone Russell always wears a ridiculous long coat that is supposed to make him appear longer than he really is. Also, he looked as if he had been on a severe slimming diet, probably with the goal of making him seem taller.

I think kurt russell needs an upgrade rob. He didnt look that much shorter than ray liottq in unlawful entry. Anr there are pictures on getty images that show him taller than mel gibson and in the film they made together. In BEST OF TIMES he was over 3 inches robin williams. Watch the movie

At times in Tango & Cash, Stallone can seem like he edges out Russell but at other times and in photos, they look quite similar, at least within half an inch of one another.

In May of 1989, my sister were on a tour of Warner Brothers Studios and Mr. Russell and Mr. Stallone were making Tango and Cash. Mr. Russell walked out of a door of a building where he had just finished filming a scene and he stood right next to my sister for a moment. She was 5'9 3/4" back then and she was wearing sneakers and he was wearing sneakers. He was nearly the same height as her if not just slightly taller. He was probably 5'10". He wasn't short. I stand 6'5". Being very skinny myself at that time, I was struck by how slender he was because after seeing him in Escape from New York a couple of years before, I was expecting that in person he would have a large physique with a large bone structure. He appeared very large and muscular in Escape from New York compared to his appearances in the Disney films of his youth. Instead he had a medium to small-boned frame but he had a very well-chiseled athletic physique. It is very interesting how cameras angles can change the way people appear on film compared to they way are in person. We did not see Stallone on that studio tour.

He was probably very close or right at 5'10" in his prime....that's why he didn't come across as being short.....he was 5'11" to 6' with shoes on...so not exactly short on screen.....short would be Tom Cruise, Pacino, Hoffman etc...obviously short even in their prime.

In Tango and cash slyvester stallone is clearly taller than him while standing naked with bare feet with whole of their bodies in one shot from foot to head. Stallone is clearly an about .75 inche taller than him. So if he is 5 9.25 then stallone is 5 10.

We never see the two men in full shots standing together except in the shower and then only their backs. In that shot they're the same height. So I believe body doubles were used. Perhaps Russell refused to be photographed nude. Lots of celebs use body doubles.

I do believe that he claimed 5'10", I remember another poster mentioning he's claimed that before as well. There use to be a comment on this page where a poster claimed he saw Russell claim 5'10" in an interview with Barry Norman after Norman asked him if he was 5'8".

He's probably around 5'9", though it was strange that Russell was taller than Mel Gibson in Tequila Sunrise.

Terrible, cop hats have space between where the top of your head is and the top of the hat. If you look at there eyes, its about a 1.5-2 inch difference. BOTH footwear look questionable, but if Vin Rhames is 5'11" then Kurt Russell looks 5'9" in the picture you provided.

He helped me with my luggage in Peru about 10 years ago. He was with Goldie and their daughter - she was much younger then. I am 5'8" and he seemed to be my height, maybe an inch taller.

Always liked Kurt--one of the few successful transitions from child to adult actor. I always thought his best work was 1981's ESCAPE FROM NEW YORK and 2003's DARK BLUE.

5'9" sounds right for KR. As previous posters mentioned: wearing thick-soled military boots in ESNY gave him at least 1"--he looks to be 5'10" tall in boots next to legit 6'2" Lee Van Cleef--with LVC wearing similar boots. I give Kurt all the credit in the world: he held his own next to one of the most underrated actors, in Van Cleef, in the history of film.

He's very attractive in person but on the shorter side, a nice guy. Most of them are alot shorter than you would think.

Russell is 5'9". I've seen him several times in person. Always a couple of inches shorter than me.
