Yeah Rob, there's strong support on here for John Williams getting added...

I'm with Jake, 6ft1¼(186.1cm) is a solid listing. Looking at him in photos I see 6ft1 flat as lowest and 6ft1½ would be the absolute highest. Visibly taller than Rex Harrison, edges Cary Grant and level with Ray Milland.
Editor Rob
I think he's worth adding at that range.
Jake: 1.84 m - 1.85 m said on 2/Jun/23
Yeah, again, agree with the consensus here.

6ft 1.25 seems a very good fit for John Williams overall.

A page would be tops, Rob!
Rory said on 20/May/23
It's difficult with Grant and Williams as I think Williams looks taller when they first meet, but Grant looks the taller maybe when they start walking. When I watched Dial M for murder my own personal take was Dawson and Milland both 186cm and Williams 185cm.

@Rampage

Thank you for the videos and photo. I must say Charles Gray looked a good inch taller than Williams there, but like you said, it is reasonable Williams had already lost height by then. However, a full inch height loss by 64 is questionable.

Here are Gray and Williams at 7:55: Click Here

I am still tied to 6'1" for Williams, 6'1.5" for Milland, and 6'0.5" for Grant. 6'1.25" is certainly possible for Williams' peak, I could come to a compromise with that.

Current estimates for Williams' peak

Rampage, Jake and potentially Rob: 6'1.25"
Gerald: 6'1"
Rory: 6'0.75"
Rampage(-_-_-)Clover said on 18/May/23
Gerald S and Rory, Williams was taller than Grant and Rex Harrison so anything below 6ft1 should be ruled out.

Here's the scene with Grant in To Catch A Thief Click Here

As for Ray Milland...

Click Here go to the 2 minute mark. Ray has his chin up/head raised back which helps make him look taller but even then still John has the edge but throughout the movie they tend to edge each other out. Interestingly, Williams doesn't have any scenes with Anthony Dawson which would have been even more revealing. Probably out of those three Anthony would measure tallest...

Here he is with Charles Gray in The Secret War of Harry Frigg (another arguable 6ft1 and change guy) Click Here now at this point he'd probably lost a little

6ft0¾ for Grant and 6ft1¼ for Williams could be spot on.
Gerald S said on 17/May/23
Rob, do you want to weigh in on the John Williams discussion?

I actually pretty much agree with Rory on WiIliams. I might be generous and give Williams a flat 6’1”, but Milland was definitely taller than Williams and at times, even Cary Grant could look taller than Williams. I completely understand the 6’0.75” argument for Williams; just watch his scenes in Dial M For Murder (where Milland has close to an inch on him) and To Catch a Thief. I really can see a 6’1.5” case for Milland.
Editor Rob
Doubt he was under 6ft 1 in his prime.
Rory said on 15/May/23
In Dial M for murder John Williams didn't look taller than Milland for me, quite the opposite in fact. I also dont see how Milland looks 2cm shorter than Grant there in that picture ? I actually think 6ft0.75 or at best 6ft1 for Williams.
Arch Stanton said on 14/May/23
I do think 6'0.5 could look spot on a lot, but in fairness in some of his 30s and 40s films he could look easily 6 ft 1.
Gerald S said on 12/May/23
Rob, could British actor John Williams get a page?

Jake, Rampage and I agreed 6’1.25” is a fair figure for this actor who appeared in To Catch a Thief, Dial M For Murder, Sabrina, Midnight Lace, Witness for the Prosecution, Island in the Sun and The Secret War of Harry Frigg. Williams was close in height to Ray Milland and Cary Grant.
Gerald S said on 12/May/23
Maybe 6’0.75” would be a fair compromise, Rob?

Rob, why not 6’0.5” for Grant, like he was measured?

He was supposed to have also measured 6ft 1.5, but like mentioned before, it may tie in with the idea that figure was in shoes.
Gerald S said on 10/May/23
6'1.25" (186.1cm) seems to be the common compromise amongst us John Williams (the actor) fans. I'm a fan of the musician John Williams equally, who I've seen 5'11.5" listings for.
Rampage(-_-_-)Clover said on 9/May/23
No, I think 6ft1 and change for Williams arguably up to 6ft1½.

I'm beginning to come around to the idea of Grant being a weaker 6ft1
Gerald S said on 9/May/23
Cary Grant could very well have peaked at 6’0.5”. He often did not look a full 6’1” in my eyes. 6’0.75” is of course an arguable figure, but Grant was even measured at 6’0.5” in his prime. Williams was 186cm at the very most but more likely a flat 6’1” in my opinion.
Jake: 1.84 m- 1.85 m said on 7/May/23
Agreed, a listing for John Williams would be tops for us film buffs. A lot of good pics and films to gauge. I'd say a bit over 6ft 1? Great character actor. A few more requests for him flowing through, Rob.
Rampage(-_-_-)Clover said on 7/May/23
Gerald S, I think David Tomlinson was another potentially strong 6ft1 guy...he had an easy inch on Dick Van Dyke in Mary Poppins.

186cm for both while Grant was 185cm
Gerald S said on 4/May/23
Cary Grant could even look taller than John Williams in To Catch a Thief at times, although I agree Williams was a more legitimate 6’1”, mostly seeming a touch taller than Grant. Over 6’1” is certainly more likely than under it for Williams. I have a feeling someone like David Tomlinson (who I really think was a tad over 6’1”) was a stronger 6’1” than Williams though.

When Rob gets back to reading the replies, we’ll have to make another joint request with Jake for Williams. He starred in so many influential films (To Catch a Thief, Dial M For Murder, Midnight Lace, Sabrina, Witness for the Prosecution, Island in the Sun, The Secret War of Harry Frigg etc.).
Rampage(-_-_-)Clover said on 4/May/23
Gerald S, ok then I think 6ft1¼ is fair for Williams, same as Milland. Could vary between them in Dial M
Gerald S said on 3/May/23
Yes, British actor John Williams would be a fantastic add.

A solid 6’1”, no more or less in my opinion. Williams was potentially taller than weak 6’1” Cary Grant in To Catch a Thief but Ray Milland was seemingly a touch taller than Williams in Dial M For Murder. In Island in the Sun, there was bearly two inches in it between Williams and James Mason, and Mason could very well have peaked at 5’10.75”!

Me and Jake both requested him on Rex Harrison's page. Listed 6ft1 and 6ft2 in places, probably somewhere between (easily pulls off the latter if Grant is 6ft1). Overall it's fair to say he had better odds of measuring 6ft1½. I posted photos on Rex's page as well where he's taller than him and Ray Milland
Rampage(-_-_-)Clover said on 11/Dec/22
By Charade he'd lost a bit I reckon. Probably 184cm zone but peak I'm still sold on him being a fairly rigid 6ft1 and got 6ft1½ at an early appointment once. He had a plethora of health issues....
Arch Stanton said on 10/Dec/22
Grant would have been about 55 when that film was shot. Maybe he had lost a little by then or Kennedy had on bigger shoes to pull off looking a stronger 6'4. I do think Grant looked under 6'1 in some of his earlier films too. I think it's possible the 6'1.5 measurement was in shoes.
Editor Rob

Philip Z said on 11/Jul/22
In "The Grass is Greener," he consistently looked half an inch shorter than Mitchum, age 56 at that point. I consider Mitchum to be more of a 6ft 0.5 to 6ft 0.25 guy, certainly more than a flat 6ft. Grant must've shrunk slightly by that point and been closer to 6ft flat himself. 6ft 0.5 peak is arguable.

Tall Sam said on 12/Aug/21
There’s a few shots from the film with Mitchum and they look really similar height, I don’t see Mitchum as a flat six footer, although he would only be a smidge over the mark perhaps. I don’t know how likely Grant would’ve had some height loss by that point but as a younger man, Grant had a real possibility of hitting near 6’1” although I could definitely see him 6’0.5”ish.

In She Done Him Wrong, Grant seemed a little stiff, but stands quite straight, he definitely looks quite tall, along the lines of someone 6'2"-6'3" today, in later comedies he tends to be much more emphatic and clowning so sometimes doesn't stand that well. He seemed a guy who didn't worry all that much about his height overall despite having been by most accounts secretly very neurotic, erratic and deeply scared by a very rough childhood.

Domi said on 12/Feb/21
Rob why is this guy not taken down half an inch, but you did when Kennedy was measured?

I have slouched badly and not stood perfectly straight for physicals at a doctor when I didn't care about the measurement but doubt I would for an army medical like Kennedy (and I agree with you in listing Kennedy at the official army measurement) nor would I slouch if getting measured by a tailor. I would make sure to stand as straight as I can at attention.

So I can't understand why this guy isn't listed at 6'0.5.

Jack Carson at a solid and well corroborated 6'2" was an excellent yard stick to compare other celebrities against IMO.

Here's Jack with 40 yo Grant in ARSENIC AND OLD LACE 1944. Clear height advantage to Carson though Grant is slumping a bit.

Fully straight I could imagine Grant still dropping at least 1" to Carson. Carson was also clearly taller than 33 yo Errol Flynn in GENTLEMAN JIM 1942. All in all, as they both compared to Carson, Flynn and Grant would've been very similar in height and if I had to, I might give Flynn the slightest edge over Grant. Otherwise, they might've been dead even.

James Stewart's listing is also strengthened by comparison to Carson in this photo, tinyurl.com/hd0cn4dy in which Stewart appears to be holding 1" advantage at the very least with argument for up to 1 1/2" advantage.

She of course, was his leading lady in the classic "North by Northwest". She mentioned how he was quite tall, a shade under 6'1", and was a charming man. Eva herself, was one of the most sweet and elegant actresses I ever met. Nice memory.
Tall Sam said on 18/Feb/20
The 6'0.5" wardrobe thing is interesting and parsing out these guys who may be from a quarter to half inch under 6'1" is a slippery slope and often a hard call. Certainly Grant is one of those guys who be more likely to measure just under 6'1" than over it.
Rory said on 20/Dec/19
You could argue he was 6ft0.5 and the 6ft1.5 claim was in shoes, that sounds logical. Then again he always did seem like a legit 6ft1er to me but then I guess someone being half an inch off what they can look/seem isn't exactly jaw dropping stuff, there'll always be margins for error like that. I'd probably still leave him at 6ft1 though unless there is further pictorial evidence to support 6ft0.5. 33 inseam would be exactly what you'd expect for a 6ft1 guy too.

Out of bed: 187.7cm
Before bed: 185.8cm

I’m inclined to believe he did measure his claim but probably earlier in the day. Not convinced it was a shoe measurement and I definitely don’t buy that he just added that fraction for the sake of it. Nobody rounds up to 6ft1½ from 6ft1 flat. The movies that he’s best known for don’t give a good representation of his peak height. But in earlier stuff he did look at least 6ft1

Not need for a downgrade Rob. If anything I’d consider him the first 6ft1⅛ inductee
Rampage(-_-_-)Clover said on 23/Feb/19

I struggle to see him under 6ft1 peak. In the 50’s-60’s it’s agreeable he’d lost some height though
Editor Rob
Some actors might have given shoe measurement, or they had an earlier measurement. It's not impossible Grant at one stage hit that mark, though there is also the case when some actors just add a fraction like 'half' to their height.

He became a big star much later and by then he'd already developed various health problems (that he did a decent job of hiding on-screen) caused mainly from self-indulgence. Maybe not as extreme as Gable or Cooper but there's noticeable decline from the 40's to 50's...

He could certainly look 6'1.5 in his 1930s films. But by late 1950s really looked around 6'0.5 I thought.
charlie said on 4/Jul/16
6 ft 1 i doubt it. There's many movies where he is standing beside 5 ft 9 guys and they stand side by side.5 ft 10 max
Tom said on 19/Jun/16
It was "Bringing Up Baby" that made him a big star in 1938. He was 28 when his Hollywood career began and after five years making films he worried he was becoming too old to become famous. James Stewart and Errol Flynn were already established stars.

Yeah, The Awful Truth is usually considered his breakout star role & came out in 1937 when he was 33. I doubt he lost height until 20 or more years later.

Grant was 34 when he became a major star.
Rampage(-_-_-)Clover said on 27/Apr/16
The problem is that he was well into his 40's when he shot to stardom. There's hardly anything of him in his 20's-30's to go by. So, the question is could he have once been 6ft1½ legitimately?

Grant was 60 in "Charade".
Rampage(-_-_-)Clover said on 7/Mar/16
He didn't look 6ft1 at all in Charade. Coburn, Matthau and Kennedy were noticeably taller than him. A 6ft1 guy should be able to hold his own with guys between 6ft2 to 6ft4.
Sam said on 7/Mar/16
Yeah did look shorter than a few of his co-stars in Charade, especially George Kennedy (RIP) who could look at least 5 inches taller in their fight scene...I don't think Grant was ever a lift-wearer but it's possible Kennedy had some help as Kennedy looked huge, having quite a bit of height not only over Grant but also James Coburn, seemingly more than 2 inches difference.
Rampage(-_-_-)Clover said on 17/Feb/16
He looked the similar to as Raymond Massey in Arsenic so a strong 6ft1 is certainly not out of the question peak
Gregorovich said on 15/Feb/16
There is a pic with Cary Grant and President Ford together in 1976. Ford looks at least two inches taller, and if Ford was 6 foot even, grant was 5'10" in 1976.
Rampage(-_-_-)Clover said on 1/Feb/16
Agreed. I could buy him getting measured at that in the morning and just going with it. But if he really stayed in that range into the evening, he'd be stacking up much better with guys from 6ft2 up to 6ft4.
Rampage(-_-_-)Clover said on 31/Jan/16
Rob, how likely is 6ft1½ for a young Grant?
Editor Rob
earlier in the day he probably could be near it, but I don't think he looked a guy who would always be between 6ft 1 and 2.
Rampage(-_-_-)Clover said on 15/Jan/16
Rob, could you add Charade to that list?

Grant looks sub-6ft next George Kennedy, James Coburn and Walter Matthau. But he was pushing 60 by that stage.
Arch Stanton said on 28/Aug/15
Rob two films I think you should see for Grant comparisons are The Grass in Greener and Operation Petticoat. Difficult to see him taller than Mitchum and if Tony Curtis was really just 5'8.75 Grant looked barely over 6ft. I thought Grant looked the exact same height as Mitchum in the Grass is Greener, there's a scene in which they're stood very close for quite a long time. Sam also thought they looked the same when Grant stood his best, but Steve reckons Mitchum had an inch on Grant. He'd have been 55 by that period, did he lose height quite early? He doesn't look to have with Connery but in films of the 60s Grant could really look no more than 6 ft at times. If you watch Arsenic and Lace, Grant was eye to eye with Raymond Massey who could at times pull off look 186-7 range with others. Grant did look a decent 6'1" in the 30 and 40s. Should we assume then that he'd lost a bit by early 60s which accounts for Mitchum being the same height or as Steve says looking taller? See them if you can and tell us what you think.
Editor Rob
it's possibly by mid 50's for Grant to have lost a fraction. Certainly you can argue Grant in 6ft 0.5 range is a possibility.
Rampage(-_-_-)Clover said on 10/Aug/15
Connery is slouching though.

@Sam Charade was a great film, but so were most of his films. Personally if Rob had to add another one I'd probably ask for Monkey Business or I Was a Male War Bride, both among the greatest comedy films ever made.

@ Rob I have that on DVD as I couldn't find it on the web! It's towards the end of the film. Perhaps as you said somewhere it's not good to judge people when moving, but they were both running similar. Not sure on road level, I think it was near cnetre of the road. A few things could explain it but if you really watch it you'll see what I mean, it really does look a big height loss compared to earlier in the movie which looks sus. If you see it I think you'll believe the full 6 ft 5 for Jim. I've found some of his early 30s films which I'll be watching sometime, seen most from 1940 to 1966 at the end now.

Grant is in slip on leather type shoes actually, Hutton is in sneakers. But really, Grat suddenly looked to lose near 2 inches next to him in comparison and looked nearer 5 ft 11!!
Arch Stanton said on 9/Jun/15
Rob I've made a big discovery on Grant. In the film Walk Don't Run he looked just about 6 ft 1 with 6'5" ish Hutton, although 6'0.5 at times. However, later on they're in a Race walk and Grant is in sneakers like Hutton and suddenly he's lost a good 1-2 inches and looks more 6 inches shorter and dwarfs him!!! The difference from earlier is very noticeable. It seems to point to lifts. He looks near 2 inches shorter than he did next to him earlier in the film. Now was he wearing lifts in his earlier films too?

Amazing, really? I thought An Affair to Remember was one of his weaker films, largely because of the lack of chemistry with Kerr. Grant had wonderful chemistry with most of his stars, Kerr wasn't really one of them. The music to the film though is amazing, and I worked it out on piano and guitar and play it with my other jazz tunes!
Gonzalo said on 30/Jan/15
Well, Sam. I hope you are not talking about "An affair to remember", a dramatic film in which Grant was simply amazing. The last scene, in which he does almost all the talking and acting, is unforgettable: the way he moves, the way he changes mood....Just incredible
Sam said on 5/Jan/15
Grant hated his own performance in Arsenic and Old Lace but I agree it's great, Capra's funniest film. Bringing Up Baby I hold up as the definitive screwball comedy, I would say Philadelphia Story qualifies as the definitive romantic comedy. I feel like Grant was always excellent in comic or semi-comic roles but some what hit-or-miss in his dramatic roles, excepting those directed by Hitchcock.
Arch Stanton said on 4/Jan/15
Those are his more definitive films yeah, but That Touch of Mink and Charade I personally find among his most enjoyable although virtually all of those listed above are superb films, especially Arsenic and Bringing Up Baby.
Sam said on 19/Dec/14

Editor Rob
everybody is worthy of a photo.
Sam said on 24/Nov/14
I imagine there was some height loss for Grant in Charade but I wonder if Kennedy was wearing big shoes, he looked enormous...more like 5 inches taller than Grant, maybe 4 over James Coburn. In other roles, Kennedy seemed only a flat 6'4" but he looked like a 6'5"+ giant there.
Lebensdorf said on 23/Nov/14
Looked 6'1 next to 6'3 James Stewart. Certainly 6'1 at peak. He looked this height in North by Northwest, as the tallest cast member in that movie, edging out Martin Landau, but by the time he made Charade, he looked no more than 6 feet next to George Kennedy.
Sam said on 18/Nov/14
I would say Grant looked relative to other actors how a 187 cm guy would look with a modern cast since the average was shorter back in his time, IMO a solid 6'1" guy and would have edged out at peak more recent 6'1" claiming leading men such as Tom Hanks, Denzel or Harrison Ford. 6'1" is a better listing though than his claim of 6'1.5".
Rampage(-_-_-)Clover said on 17/Nov/14
He could appear 6ft1½ at times. Near 6ft flat by the time of his death though.
Arch Stanton said on 16/Nov/14
He could look 187 at times. In Only Angels Have Wings he looked nearer 6'2" actually in some scenes, but generally I think 185 is spot on. In some films from the late 50s and early 60s he could look barely over the 6' mark. It's difficult to see 187 with Tony Curtis for example.
mike said on 11/Nov/14
Sam reply: Well like Arch said in his earlier movies he can look between 6ft 1 and 2 and i agree. 6ft 1 is fine listing maybe 186?
Sam said on 28/Oct/14
mike, Arch said "185 has to be spot on." not 6'1.5". He was a 6'1" man IMO, the 6'1.5" claim trying to squeeze a bit extra or perhaps a morning height or measured in sandals or slippers.
mike said on 16/Oct/14
He could've been 6ft 1.5 peak i agree with Arch.
Sam said on 15/Sep/14
Grant kind of had a bullish neck and could seemed broad across the shoulders, at least until he put on Ralph Bellamy jacket & looked like a teenager putting on dads big jacket. Yeah, he could have been closer to 170 lb, but I could still see up to 30 lbs. more on Grant compared to the skinny Stewart in the 30s/40s but not 50 lbs.
Arch Stanton said on 23/May/14
Ha I thought it was him. Harry Guardino of Dirty Harry fame was the guy in Houseboat! A little less craggy faced back then but still recognizable!!
Arch Stanton said on 23/May/14
Compared to Brando Sam, yes Bogart had a low number of flops. I personally thought ones like High Sierra were really overrated films though, even if I enjoyed most of his movies.
Arch Stanton said on 23/May/14
I find it hard to believe he was 180 pounds and Jimmy Stewart 130 pounds!! Grant looked very thin in the late 50s, underweight if anything. He didn't as heavy as 180 at that time anyway.
Gonzalo said on 7/May/14
Grant, Stewart and Cooper are the leading actors with a higher number of masterpieces in their careers and the ones who have worked with the best directors ever: Ford, Hawks, Wilder, Hitchcock, Capra, Cukor, Stevens, McCarey, Vidor, Lang, Mann, Lubitsch, Wyler, DeMille, Mankiewicz, Donen, Stenberg, Preminger, Borzage
Sam said on 6/May/14
Agreed on Grant & Stewart, I might disagree on Bogart, I think his flop quota is fairly low. I feel that Clark Gable and Gary Cooper had a pretty solid number of weaker movies in their career.
Arch Stanton said on 5/May/14
Bogart IMO had a high number of duds than both Grant and Stewart.
Arch Stanton said on 5/May/14
Agreed Sam. Cary Grant was one of those rare actors who could make a mediocre film watchable. Like Jimmy Stewart the vast majority of his films are very good and I've enjoyed every performance of each I've seen to date. He could look 187 in some of his 30s and early 40s movies like Fonda could, but yeah by late 50s he was looking nearer 6 ft.
Gonzalo said on 5/May/14
Cary Grant is simply one the best actor in cinema history. French director Jean Renoir said that God invented cinema in order Jean Gabin to act. I think the same sentence can be used for Grant. Just watch the final scene of "An affair to remember" to see what acting is about. Nobody can compare to him by the way he moves on the screen. He was one of a kind.
In his old films he looked around 1,85-86. He looked tall next to James Stewart in The Philadelphia Story. In the fifties he looked more 1´82-83
Sam said on 25/Apr/14
I read an opinion on a film board that Grant's filmography had a high crap-to-good ratio, I think the opposite, even Grant's weaker movies usually have something to recommend them and he clearly had a good eye for material that suited his strengths. Anyway, rewatching The Philadelphia Story, there seems to be no way that Grant dipped much (if at all) under 6'1" since the difference between him and 6'3"+ Jimmy Stewart seems 2 inches max.
Arch Stanton said on 25/Apr/14
George Kennedy actually looked 6'4.5" in Charade.
Arch Stanton said on 25/Apr/14
185 has to be spot on. He also had about 2 cm on 6 ft Nigel Bruce in Suspicion. 185 checks out in nearly every comparison, although later on he could look a bit shorter.

Victor McLagen listed at 6'3" actually makes Grant look 6' range in Gunga Din.
Arch Stanton said on 27/Mar/14
Oddly looks average in Gunga Din, a lot of actors in it were taller.
Arch Stanton said on 24/Mar/14
In The Awful Truth I agree that Bellamy looked as if he slightly edged out Cary but they're practically the same height.
Arch Stanton said on 24/Mar/14
A little nutmeg? LOL yeah The Awful Truth is a great film, close to His Girl Friday in comedic quality and timing. Agreed.
Arch Stanton said on 24/Mar/14
Looks barely taller than Noah Beery, Sr. in She Done Him Wrong.
Sam said on 30/Jan/14
I actually thought Bellamy just edged Cary Grant out but there's only a weak cm if that between them. Bellamy had surprisingly broad shoulders which made him look bigger overall IMO than Grant did, despite Grant's kind of thick neck. This is most apparent when Grant wears Bellamy's jacket in The Awful Truth, which is almost as great as His Girl Friday.
Arch Stanton said on 29/Jan/14
But he was exact same height as Raymond Massey and Bob Mitchum, both 185cm. Ralph Bellamy in my opinion looked a bit shorter though in His Girl Friday.
Arch Stanton said on 29/Jan/14
In fairness he could look 6'1.5" in the 30s and 40s, but in the 1950s and 1960s he really didn't look over 6'1", in fact he could look barely over 6' at times.

If the army records say he was 6'-1.5" that was his height period. Who cares what some of these people think that have never met him. You can't judge by comparing them to other stars in movies the camera angles can make who ever they choose appear to look taller. And don't forget the elevator shoes. Cary Grant 6'-1.5" Remember Randolf Scott liked em tall.

In some scenes where you can see ground level, footwear and whole body, films are actually an excellent way to judge height. I do it all the time and mostly I find the comparisons check out with what Rob has listed them at on here or look very close. Occasionally you'll get some freak ones like James Caan in The Godfather seeming a lot taller but generally if you can see footwear and full body proportions I find you can make a good judgement if on a flat floor interior, its the outdoor scenes, when you can't see below the torso, and when camera angle isn't straight that you have to be wary.

6'4'' George Kennedy had a full four inches on him in Charade (1963). However, at the age of then 59, Grant had finally started to age (and rapidly at that) and would go on to make only two more films before his retirement. Therefore, I believe that the posters who estimate him as a weak 6'1'' are correct and would assume a peak height of 6'0.75'' for Cary and 6' flat in 1963.

Shaun said on 12/Nov/11
Mmm was he really more 5'11" and wore lifts?
jake, 1.82 m- 1.83 m said on 11/Nov/11
James Stewart was a strong 6' 3" (191-192 cm), Grant maybe a weak 6' 1".

Saw a pic of Grant next to Marilyn Monroe ('Monkey Business'). Both barefoot in bathing suits. Marilyn was about 5' 3", Grant looks ONLY to be 5" taller. Go figure.

Just saw him standing next to roland young in a movie and cary was much taller than young.
Roland young looked about 5 ft 10".

I see a max 2 inch difference with Stewart in The Philadelphia Story. Guess it shows what a difference perception makes.
Jay said on 11/Aug/11
Always looked tall and was about centimeter or two taller than Mitchum in The Grass is Greener. If Mitchum is correct at 185cm and he always looked that height at a minimum, then it is likely Grant was 186cm.

How many male actors wore lifts in their shoes?!!!
Mr. Kaplan said on 13/Jun/11
Why should we be jealous of him? He looks almost three inches shorter than Stewart at times in that film. Never over 6'1".

Ok, as to the whole weight issue, grant was heavier in the 30's and 40's but in the early 50's he got really sick and lost a lot of weight. don't try to take away from the man who was gorgeous up till the day he died
Red said on 7/Feb/11
I think if you watch Philadelphia story he's 6'1-6'1.5 you can see that when he's with Jimmy Stewart. Why does everyone on these forums try to bring down peoples heights. Don't be jealous of Cary Grant.
James said on 19/Dec/10
by the time of north by north west was probably 6ft 1/2 (184cm)

No Adam. Scott was 6'3" and Wayne was 6'4". If Scott was only 6'2" then Cary Grant would have been 5'11". I've seen photos of Grant and Scott who by the way were roommates and there's a definite three inch difference.
Gonzalo said on 1/Jul/09
In the 30s and 40s he looked over 6`1. In the fifties and sixties 6`0. Another case for mystery.
Adam strikes back against Wayne. He pursues him all over the site!!
adam said on 30/Jun/09
Correct Frank. And Randolph Scott was 6-2. Wayne probably 6-2

Grant was 6' even. Here he is with 5'10" Charles Coburn:

Also he is the same height or slightly taller than 6'1" Noah Berry in She Done Him Wrong. Around 1980, he is a bit shorter than 6'1" Ronald Reagan.
Sam said on 16/Jan/09
I suspect he lost some height over time. He holds his own heightwise with James Stewart (6'3") and Randolph Scott (6'3"+) in the 1930s (probably less than 2 inches difference). But in the 1960s, he is much shorter than George Kennedy (6'4") and Jim Hutton (6'5")
Patrick said on 16/Jan/09
In Gunga Din, he looks really tall and no less than 6'1 anyway. But he was slender and so refined he can give the impression of being taller when on his own.

Between 6ft1 and 6ft2. Closer to 6ft2. He always looked quite tall.

Grant was 6' even when I first saw him in the late 1960s. That was when he maintained an office at Universal in a large bungalow. He had a cream-colored Rolls Royce Silver Cloud with a big dent in the front fender. It seems someone hit him and he refused to fix it until the guilty party paid him. The dent remained for several months. So long that I saw some rust starting to form. Grant was a notorious tightwad. So tight he even charged for autographs.
