Here is a video of Andre vs. Ernie Ladd from what looks like the late 70`s (Click Here). The guy who posted it says Andre appears 3 inches taller than Ladd, and if you pause it at 2:57 that looks about right.

If you pause this video at 3:04 (Click Here)there is another comparison of Andre and Ladd. However,Andre is closer to the camera.Still, its easy to see that Andre is clearly taller than Ladd. There are also 2 interviews of Ladd next to Vince Mcmahon, and if Vince is 6'1.5"(as per Rob)than Ladd could be as tall as 6'9".

If you want to judge someone's height from wrestling matches, the one and ONLY way to do that is if the match has (some kind of) a staredown in it, where both wrestlers are face to face, toe to toe. That's the only way to go at because both wrestlers are at equal distance from the camera and most of times have a similar posture as well.
All other ways to try and judge a wrestler's height during a match are useless. Camera angles and postures can have a large effect on height. If one wrestler stands closer to the camera he can appear much taller than he is. I can cap pics of matches where Hogan can look as tall or even taller than Andre just because of the camera advantage he has.

There's no doubt in my mind that Andre is several inches taller than Ernie Ladd, though I've never seen any good comparison pics of the two. The matches that I've seen of the two so far simply don't have any good comparison moments. But if I look at the people both wrestlers stood next to I'd say Andre would be a couple of inches taller.

To offer an insight into Haystacks/Ruane's true height rather than billed he appeared in a Sunday newspaper magazine (I believe NOTW) in an article focussing on large height differentials between couples. His wife was short but billed him as 6ft 7. Seen as it was illustrating big differences this will have been pretty much bang on. I can't remember when published but I'm sure someone would be able to investigate and confirm I would suspect it was some time ago seen as he's been dead some years.

6'7 is very probable for Haystacks as he rarely, if ever, looked taller.

There are some good pic,s there Big Show.can this Wrestler shed any light on the Haystacks Andre fights from New Zealand,

I'm hoping he can. He did see these two wrestle each other in 1980 as he wrote an article about it for Fight Times. He was good friends with Steve Rickard (a legendary wrestler in New Zealand). Nowadays he's an avid wrestling collector and I'm looking forward of hearing from him again. Hopefully with some info on Andre's clash with Haystacks.

THANK YOU for pointing that out! I honestly didn't watch the whole video and in the very beginning it looked like Khan was barefoot but you're right, Khan was definitely some HUGE ass platforms.

I'm thinking Hogan was a minimum of 6'5.5" peak, maybe 6'6". Jake I'll put at 6'5"

roberts did look 6'5 (when he stands up straight) at WM3 with mene gene and alice cooper (who is listed here at 5'9.5) cooper had big cowboys on too Click Here roberts posture is very poor though even as far back as 1987.

here is jake on uk tv circa 2001 with 6'1 listed ross and 5'11 cricket listed david gower, looks at least 6'4 there Click Here

anyone know jakes dad Aurelian "Grizzly" Smith's billed height, a few months back i saw 3-4 photos of jake and his dad standing side by side and his dad has still a good bit of height on his son even though he is nearly 80

khan was billed at 6'5 i doubt that was his legit barefoot height, he is wearing big platform things there, hogan is in wrestling boots and jake is in sneakers

Actually scratch that I found it on Dailymotion. They're close, Hogan may actually have been a full inch taller, but it's hard to tell because Jake isn't standing up completely straight. Also can't see footwear. Look particularly at the 43 second mark.

Killer Kahn is in the video too. I had no idea how big he is. He's barefoot in the video and stacks up real well to both Jake and Hogan. Look at the 2min mark. He's got to be AT LEAST 6'5". Interestingly enough, I think he may have been billed 6'5".

Look at Khan's footware in the very end.

I think I've seen Khan billed as 6'6 and 6'7 too.

We have a 6'5ish Killer Khan with HUGE platform heels and he is still a little shorter than Hogan.(Both men were ABOUT 6'7 in their respective footware) Roberts in my view was closer to if not 6'5. He is still the same height as Randy Orton who is about at that 6'5 mark. Also Roberts was within 2-3" of the Undertaker. Most evidence points to a 6'5.75" to 6'6 peak Hulk Hogan.

Sorry all, just off the subject of Andre for a sec in Neil's Bio he states Richard Kiel as 7'2 which i find pretty interesting, as alot have people have said he's shorter than that. I wish there was a picture of the 2 of them standing next to each other.

Kiel has stated he was 7'1.5 himself. That was in his prime (60's til 80's). In the 90's his health deteriorated and by 1996 he couldn't walk anymore without the help of a cane. A picture of Kiel and Fingleton standing next to each other today would prove nothing except that Kiel has lost a good amount of height.

Does anyone have the Jake the Snake Roberts DVD? If so, on the extras Jake does an interview with Hogan on the Snake pit. They look ruffly the same height with Hogan maybe being tops .5" taller. I don't know how to load it on the comp but if anyone has it feel free to load it so we can all see.

THe thing about the Ladd-Studd video is that Sudd's weight was geatly exzagerated. I don't see Studd being 1 pound heavier the Ladd in that video. And Ladd's weight was always put at just over 300. 290-310 in his playing days and 315-320 wrestling. Studd was always put at 360-385 usually about 370. Obviously Studd was billed crazy high. I hear that at his funeral even his best friend refered to him as 6'7 320. Which was probably right, but rounded up. Ladd even looked a little taller. Ladd was 6'8-6'9 in his playing days. Studd 6'6-6'7 315-320. A rather old Ladd at 6'8 315

Here's another match of Andre which I received this past weekend. The match is dated May 2, 1972, so it's one of Andre's earlier matches. It's a 6-Man tag-team match. Andre teams up with Ivan Vaiten (Franz van Buyten) & Tito Kopa (a very short guy) against Rusher Kimura, Isamu Teranishi & Thunder Sugiyama.

This match for the first shows a bit of Andre's legendary strength. At 17:55 and onwards he does an impressive press slam on a Japanese guy. We've seen many gorilla press slams in modern day wrestling, but I haven't seen someone perform it the way Andre does it here.

We also see some moves which became signature moves for famous wrestlers 2 decades later, such as the Tombstone Piledriver and the Wreck.

The crutch segment is only the first part. The second part features Andre barefoot without crutches and Vince McMahon. I think that's the reason why JT posted this vid.
Chris already posted a few caps of that segment a few months ago. Many here claimed over a foot difference between Andre and Vince. The video clearly shows that Vince is standing behind Andre and not next to him.

Click Here In Europe (and other metric system regions), is there some fascination about reaching 210 cm. as there is with reaching 7'0" here in the U.S.?

Not sure, in most European sports I've seen many athletes listed at heights such as 188, 198 or 208 cm. So I doubt there is any real fascination for a 210 cm listing like it is with 7 foot. People who are 198cm are sometimes listed at 200cm.
210 cm for Andre sounds believable. It explains the various 6'11 references I've seen of him. It could explain a 6'10 listing in the UK if he has been measured later in the day.

Fair enough, for all we know he might have been 6'4. However, 6'4 in those days would have been the equivalent of 6'8 today, so he would have been exceptionally tall as well.

Here's an interesting photo comparison that I just made. I took a photo (a few years old) of myself next to the wax figures (from New York's Madame Tussands - which are supposed to be spot-on accurate) of Kareem Addul Jabbar and Willy Shoemaker. I used that picture in comparisons to the ones we have of Andre/Willy and Wilt/Willy....I think that Andre and Kareem compare very much the same as an earlier comparison using Bill Anderson who posed with both men. Again, I'm 6'1" ----What do you think ?

Deter says on 5/Jan/09
andres head would need to be 15 inches long in that case as the bottom of andres chin is level with van buyten eyebrows or 4 inches from the top of his head.

His chin level with his eyebrows? Are we looking at the same picture......

Anyway Big Show that is a good picture you found there which gives more evidence on how tall Andre really was. Good work

The website Obsessed with wrestling says
"Andre Rousimoff (Andre the Giant) left home at the tender age of 14, stood 6'3" and weighed over 200 pounds"
My son is taller than that now and weighs 317 lbs.
take a look at a video he made with his friend.

I know that there are lots of tall people but most are skinny. He already is bigger in mass than Shaq!
He has always been huge and hasn't really had a growth "spurt" and has just started puberty this year.

If he really is 185cm then i see a 7ft Andre there. he definately has 30cm on him. Andre can stand up straighter aswell.

Van Buyten comes up just above Andre's mouth. The pic is tilted in Van Buyten's favour. Here I've eliminated that tilt.

Van Butyen is leaning a bit, but it hardly effects his height in my opinion. He's standing closer to the camera, so he's having a camera advantage. With the camera advantage he comes up to Andre's mouth, which equals 2/3 of his head. If his head is 12 inches that equals an 8 inch difference. If you eliminate the camera advantage that can result in a 10 inch difference.
I'd say it's a 10 inch difference. The posture of both men is very good.

andres head would need to be 15 inches long in that case as the bottom of andres chin is level with van buyten eyebrows or 4 inches from the top of his head.

A little side info on the 2nd pic I've posted yesterday. The guy who stands next to Andre is Franz van Buyten. A Belgium wrestler who wrestled under the name Ivan van Buyten in Japan in the early 70's (probably that pic was taken when both wrestled over there). For what it's worth, Van Buyten was billed at 185cm.

One again I'll reiterate...When I met Andre in 1980's he was not 7' tall. No way, shape or form. What I see in the Hogan/Andre pic is most likely a 6'5" Hogan who, if you removed Andre's boots, would come slightly above eyebrow level of Andre's forehead. Andre's forehead slopes back quickly so there's most likely only about 5" to the top of his head, so that equates to about a 6'10" Andre. No smoking gun here.

We are all aware you say you met Andre twice. Once in the early 80's and again in the late. We all know you say he looked 6'10 at the tallest and your friends agree. You've made that clear. But here's the problem with using online personal stories. Everyone has a different story. I've read a lot of other peoples stories about meeting Andre and they even back up the Kayfabe. In fact I heard more personal stories stating a 7' or over Andre than what you claim. The fact is even if you met him that doesn't mean you know his height to the inch. Peole say I'm 5'7ish ALL THE TIME, but guess what, I'm about 5'10. Just like there is a guy on the Giant Haystacks site who claims to be Haystacks son and gives a personal, detailed account of his father being officially measured by Guiness at 6'11. But does that mean its true? My point is I as well as most other people on this site prefer to make up their own minds based on visual proof such as pictures and videos rather than stories that cannot be verified or if true may be a bad estimate. Also, 6'5 is too low for a peak Hogan. The lowest I'd go for a peak Hogan is 6'5.75".

I think that The 1982 Hogan/Andre picture is good, the one thing I would say is that I had those same kind of sneakers in high school back at that time and they had a big heel, a solid inch, the reason I got them was because I wanted a big cushion heel, so that mitagates much more of Andres boot advantage than you think. Hogan was 6'5 and about 6'6 with that footware. Andre was 6'11 and about 7'1 in Cowboy boots. He got the 7'4-7'5 because his afro would give him an extra 3-4 inches still. His hair is nearly coombed down to his scalp in that picture.

I agree and will maintain that Andre's peak height was between 6'11.5"-7'0.25". He got down to 6'10" towards the end and at times appeared to be as short as 6'9" with his terrible posture.

The new Hogan/Andre picture in streetwear clearly proves an 7'0 Ander, no question about that. Also Hogan has been proved to be 6'6 in the picture where he directly faces Zeus aka Tiny Lister and we can see Hogan equally as tall as lister even though Lister is wearing a slight heel!
Rock said on 2/Jan/09
In the princess bride special edition they mention how much taller andre actually looks when he stands straight up. His back was really bad by the early 80s. 7 feet is the most accurate estimation for his peak based on the evidence.

I would say those boots give 2 inches lift minimum (they look very chunky indeed), so if Hogan's flat shoes give
Gretz said on 1/Jan/09
Stand Andre straight and take an inch off for his footware advantage, and he has hogan by 6 inches in that pic.Just like the back stage celebration pics from 1984 after Hogan won the title.Clearly,Andre still can look 6'11" to 7'0" in more than a few pics from the early 80`s.
Anonymous said on 1/Jan/09
Andre has more than half an inch heel advantage there, Hogans's looks pretty flat, like a tennis shoe, Andres is pretty big, like a cowboy boot, how much boost would he get from that? Andre is closer to the camera but his head is tilting slightly, that evens out? I would say Hogan is 6'6 in those shoes, what does Andre get from his?

Can you show me some proof that cinder blocks are the same size everywhere in the world. Otherwise it's just as stupid as comparing him to a door, which a lot of people on this board have tried earlier on. Doors don't have a standard height. I think comparing him to Backlund is a better way to verify his height. But alas, Backlund's height is questionable aswell. Wasn't Backlund a amateur wrestler before he joined the WWF. There must be pre-WWF height listings of him on the net. Personally I doubt he was 6'1, unless he lost a good amount of inches during his career, 'cause when he entered the Royal Rumble in 2000, he looked awfully small. He once wrestled Kevin Nash, do we have any pictures or videos of that?

Maybe it would have been illegal to obtain them... but for someone with money it still would have been possible to get a copy of his records. Plus here in sweden medical records are available to the next of kin.
I firmly believe in 6'11 for andre. As for Big Show I think Andre was taller, I don't believe Show is a 7-footer. Unless he wears lifts.

I fully am in Blair and in Gretz's corner on this one. I mean come on guys, after having seen a much TALLER Hogan, dwarfing a 6 footer in 1988, we are still contemplating Andre's peak height? Andre still had a good 5" on Hogan in 1987 and at least 6" in 1983 when they fought and I see about a 7" difference in 1979. I've seen photos and vids. 7'1"-7'2" is reasonable enough. After all, that's Wilt's height and Andre was pretty much his height in 1983, or slightly under. Back date 10 years, with a thin and youthful Andre, I'd bet my life savings that they were the EXACT same height, if not the adavnatge in Andre's corner.
Blair said on 18/Oct/06
Very good points Gretz . I truly believe when you add up the pictures and the wrestlers shoot interviews and the Mike Mooneyham claim and the manager measurement the evidence is overwhelming that Andre was 7'1.5 inches at his peak height.
Gretz said on 18/Oct/06
Blair, that 6'7" at 17yrs. old also came from Meltzers book so I wouldn`t put much stock in it.Alfred Hayes said he was 6'10" at the time. Also,I`m sure Mike Mooneyham was rounding up the 7'1.5" measurment taken by Andre`s manager. And although there is no proof to back up that claim at this time.Meltzer`s 6'9.75" measurment has no proof to back it up either.consider that medical records are confedencial. It would be illeagal for Meltzer to obtain them.So we are left with logic and Andre looks closer to 7'1.5" to me than 6'9.75" at his peak height.
Gretz said on 18/Oct/06
Big Show,I think the Andre pic with Backlund is pretty good evidence that Andre was 7'0" tall or A little over. His back is real close to the cinder block wall and is 10 1/2 blocks high or 84 inches.Seeing how the space between the blocks might add another inch Andre could be close to 7'1" there.Factor in Backlunds 6'1" listing and even if we lower him to 6'0" there Andre appears 12 or 13 inches taller than him there. Now,I know using using the cinder block wall is hardly the best way to measure someone. But short of A pic with Andre next to A tape measure,it`s the best we have to go with. You have to admit if Andre came out to 6'10" there, everyone who thinks Andre is under 7'0" would have jumped all over it.But since he didn`t I havent heard A peep from anyone about it.If you want to check it out JT posted it further down on this site.
Blair said on 18/Oct/06
Why are people so skeptical did you read the cited info below that states wrestling journalist Mike Mooneyham has him at 7' 2 peak height and his claim I believe is more legit than Meltzer's because Meltzer contradicts himself by saying Andre 6'11.5 in the Wilt photo which he also rounds Wilt's height down because Wilt's height was actually 7'1.38. Who gives him the right to round down Wilt's height after all he never measured him. Also Mike Mooneyham wasn't trying to sell a book. Also I have cited below that wrestlers themselves say that Andre was taller than the Big Show who is 7' tall.

Blair which pictures do you think are proof of Andre being over 7 feet tall. I haven't seen pics that actually 'prove' Andre to be over 7' tall. What I do see is pics that prove him to be a shade under 7 feet tall in the late '70's, early '80's. Now of course it's reasonable to assume that he was taller than that in the early '70's, because he was thinner, but I don't know that for sure. In my view the pics with the cake prove nothing. They say the cake is 7'4 because that's Andre's 'billed' height, and that's why they're the same height. The 7'4 listing dates from the time he debuted in the Click Here So the listing already existed when that pic with the cake was taken. Coincidence that the cake was billed at 7'4...of course not.

Blair, the fact that Mike Mooneyham lists Andre at 7'2 (which is probably a round-up from the 7'1.5 figure) doesn't mean it's a legit claim. He might not try to sell books, but he sure as hell tries to sell articles. Plus he doesn't reveal the source where he got the 7'2 listing from. He probably heard about the 7'1.5 claim or maybe it was a measurement in shoes. That I can buy, but a 7'2 barefoot listing for Andre's peak height is out of the question for me. He suffered the greatest height loss in the latter part of his life (1983-1993, due to numerous surgeries) not in the early part. Seeing as I believe he was 6'11.5 in 1983 and 6'10 (maybe 6'9.5) at death, I don't believe he also lost this amount of height in the early part of his life.

I should point out that Hogan probably first met Andre back in 1979.As I have A match from southeastern championchip wrestling where Hogan and Andre arm wrestle on 5-5-79.At the time Hogan was billed as Terry "The Hulk" Boulder. This is probably where the half foot estimate came from as Andre was no longer 6in. taller than Hogan at WM3.During the match Andre does look at least 6 inches taller than Hogan to me.And in light of the recent pic on Hogan`s site where he looks the legit 6'7" he claims(I always thought he was at least 6'6.5" cause he had an inch on 6'5.5" hillbilly jim in the 80`s).It seems to be another piece of solid evidence that Andre was over 7 foot,at least as of 1979.
Blair said on 18/Oct/06
Also remember that Mike Mooney states that Andre was being billed at 7'4 or 7'5 but was really 7' 2 at his peak. You must realize that if Andre was any less Mike Mooneyham would say because that's his job. He's not looking out for the best interests of the wrestlers. He is looking out for himself since this is how he makes a living. He's not one to protect Kayfabe and he not trying to sell a book. I think this is the most legitimate claim of Andre's height and the proof is there for all to read.
Blair said on 18/Oct/06

I really believe there is enough proof on this site with the pictures and the citing of facts to prove Andre to be over 7 feet tall at his peak height. So it looks like the 7'1.5 measurement is the most legit account of Andre's height. The pictures with the cake which is at least 7'4 and Andre with hair and boots was the same height as the cake which would make him abou 7'1.5 as stated.

Nice job with the Photoshop, Richard. I compared the photos in Word. I assumed that if Andre stood up perfectly straight, the top of his head would come up to around the bottom of Palmer's nose. Based on your superimposed photos, Andre may come up to Palmer's mouth or maybe between his mouth and nose. 8 inch difference maybe? Palmer could be taller than 7'7" but that seems to be his official height (downgraded from 8'2").

If you have the time, it may be interesting to merge your photo into these with 7'6" Yao Ming and 7'0" Shaq (Click Here) or Ming and 6'11" Kevin Garnett (Click Here).

Andre and Wilt look just about the same height in that pic.Andre had at least 1 in. heels there, but I think Wilt`s big wig pretty much even things out. However Andre is A little closer to the camera so i`ll give Wilt A 1/2in. on Andre there.
Gretz said on 17/Oct/06
Actually in hogan`s biography (hollywood Hulk Hogan)he says Andre was half a foot taller than him and that he was billed at 7'4".He also says McMahon would take his shoes off or leave them on depending on the wrestler he was interveiwing.
Big Show said on 17/Oct/06
They claim the height of that cake is 7'4 because it matches Andre's height and what was Andre's claimed height again?
Big Show was just putting Andre over when he said that Andre was 2 or 3 inches taller than him. There's no way Andre was 2 or 3 inches taller than Big Show even during his peak. Big Show is a legit 7-footer or at least very close to it. So that would make Andre 7'2 or 7'3. If that was the case Andre shrunk 2.5-3.5 inches when the pic was taken with Wilt in 1983. I hardly doubt that, because 1983 was pre-back surgery or knee problems. That would have mean that Andre solely lost height due to his weight gain and that's impossible. He might have lost 0.5-1 inch due to that, but I think that's it.
The people that knew Andre are still trying to uphold Andre's legacy. Hogan still claims Andre to be 7'4 and 550 lbs. Most of the wrestlers knew Andre when Andre was already a big fat guy, there aren't many wrestlers out there that knew Andre when Andre was still a slim wrestler.
Blair, words of other wrestlers mean absolutely nothing. Mostly wrestlers lie about their height or other wrestler's height. So to say that is legit proof that Andre was indeed 7 foot is wrong. If you want Andre's height to be upgraded on this site you'll have to come up with something better than that. To me pics, videos or real measurements are the only evidence that would prove Andre to be over 7 feet tall.
The pic with the cake was taken during Andre's 28 birthday (1974 and not 1972 as the pic says). Andre was already fat back then so to say he lost 2 inches in 9 years without him having any surgeries. Yes Andre wasn't in the best shape in 1983, but he also wasn't in the worst shape either. If Andre was 6'10 when he died, that means he lost 1.5 inches in the last 9 years of his life. And I think he lost more height in the period 1983-1993 than he did in the period 1974-1983.
Randy said on 17/Oct/06
I can't believe people keep bringing up the pic with Wilt, and Andre. Andre shows had soles on them of at least an inch. Chamberlain had on moccasins with no sole. If Chamberlain looked about an inch or a little more taller than Andre in the pic, it's likely that he was really a couple inches taller. So I'd go with 6'11" as his peak height. He looks that height in his matches with Studd, and in his pictures with Chris Taylor. 6'11.5" may be pushing it.
Richard said on 16/Oct/06
I had a bit of fun here with photoshop.
I took the photos that JT provided of Andre next to jerry lewis and that of Jerry lewis and a 7'7 man. I Simply made Lewis roughly the same size in both photos just to get an idea of what Andre would look like next to that guy. These are variations of the same picture. The first one has Andre superimposed over the others with a transparency of 70% the other photos have Lewis body removed and in the third one, I took the liberty of giving Andre a haircut. :)
Andre looks taller than what Undertaker looked next to 7'6 Giant Gonzales. In the end Andre comes out looking 6'10 or 6'11.
But then again, this is just me playing with photoshop. :)
enjoy:
Pic 1 Click Here

pic 2 Click Here

pic 3 Click Here

One observation I made is that Andre is comparable to that 7'7 guy with his upper body, they seem to be the same size in length, also the same head size and the feet looks the same size also. The only difference is the length of their legs. If andre had had longer legs he could have been 7'7 :)
This is a bit funny because the guy playing Andre in the movie "heart of a giant" which is currently being made is 7'7... and this is what Andre would have looked like next to a 7'7 man, almost a head shorter.
This guy has Andre by at least 8 inches.

Frank, I like you, but it's amazing how you don't budge on Taker's height and Andre's even after WE provide evidence that goes against your belief. Wilt did not have over 2" on Andre in 1983. It's even stated in the pic with Wilt that Andre is 6'11.5" and Dave Meltzer only reduced Andre's height to 6'11.5" because he also reduced Wult's height to 7'0.5", even though Wilt was 7'1 3/8" AND this was 1983. Have you seen the pics of Andre from 10-15 years before. Tell me he couldn't have been 1-2" taller at that point. We KNOW that Big Show appears shorter nowadays and he's even younger than Andre was in that Wilt pic, so, why is it so hard to believe that Andre was a 7 footer. Try to open your mind Frank.
Frank said on 16/Oct/06
The reason they billed Andre at 7ft 4 is because they wanted to make him taller than the 7ft 2 Kareem Abdool Jabbar so he could be the tallest athlete at that time...I still would give Andre 6ft 11 peak height because i have video of him next to Vince in the late 70's and he does not appear over 7ft
Danimal said on 15/Oct/06
And Wrestlers lose even more height due to the physicalities of the sport and the subsequent surgeries associated with putting their bodies through hell.

As for the cake being 7'4". Well, take into account that this was a time (early 70's) where that 7'4" measurement for Andre didn't exist yet. It was much later that he was given that height (circa 1979 I believe). I believe that cake was 7'4". We can't be skeptical of EVERYTHING. If it was 7'4". The top of Andres Afro was on even level with it, or thereabouts. Factor in 2-2.5" for the hair and shoes and we get a 7'1"-7'2" Andre. Nothing under 7'0.5" that's for sure. Is it so hard to believe that Andre in his prime was the same height as Wilt Chamberlain?????
Warlord said on 15/Oct/06
JT,
I don't see your problem. If Andre is 7 feet or 7 foot 1 and you say this Palmer guy is 7 foot 7 then I don't see any issues. No kidding this guy would tower over Andre as he would be a good 6 to 7 inches taller. Also, Palmer is thinner and thinner people look even taller because their girth is so much more disproportiionate to their height. And if Hogan really was almost 6 foot 7 (see the recent pic added to the Hogan page) then all the more likely Andre is over 7 feet. And what does that say about Studd? Perhaps 6 foot 8 and not 6 foot 7?

Blair,
How can you trust Wikidpedia? They're a website that gathers info from around the web to make their site. For all you know they could be looking at this site and using it for some of their information!

Andre easily has a full head on jerry lewis and andres head is MUCH larger then palmers. andre would prob come up to palmers nose, and palmer is standing up perfectly erect where andre clearly isnt.....he never does

If he were standing up stragith who knows he might even come up to the eye level of palmers, who does not have a long forehead for a man his height.

Now we're debating the height of a cake. Danimal, how do we know the cake was a legit 7'4"? There's no tape measure next to it. I can't rule out Andre being 7'0", especially when he was younger. I'm sure Big Show never met Andre and is just repeating what others have told him. When comparing Big Show and Hogan and Andre and Hogan, Big Show just looked taller even when factoring in Hogan's height loss.

The photos of Andre with Jerry Lewis and a reported 6'5" Chris Taylor from the mid-70s are the most troubling for me (Click Here)(Click Here). Compare Andre's height with 6'5" Taylor and Big Show's with 6'5" Scott Hall. (Click Here) Big Show just seems taller.

Also, when you compare Andre and Jerry Lewis and Lewis and 7'7" Max Palmer (Click Here), Palmer towers over Andre. Andre seriously would come up to the bottom of Palmer's nose. Even though Palmer is turned to his left, the photo angle is straight on for both pictures so a decent comparison can be made. Hopefully we can get some more pictures of Andre from the late 1960s or early 1970s to better establish his peak height.

JT,The truth of the matter is we can`t see Andre`s legs in that pic with Gagne. So we don`t know if his legs bent or not.Plus his head is tilted down slightly while Gagne is looking up.Bob Backlund came up to just about the same level on Andre and is probably 2 in. taller than Gagne and that pic was A full body shot. Now none of this adds up to much. But it means a lot if we are talking about Andre being 7'0" or 7'1.Its clear to me that after seeing more pics of A young Andre that he was at least 7'1"at his peak.

Hmmm...between Andre and Big Show peak height...I think it would be awfully close, possibly too close to call If they ever stood together though, certain things would be apparent: Show is more compact and muscular. Andre's frame however, would be much bigger. His rib cage expanse alone would be much much wider. Plaster casts from the old WWF New York revealed that Andre's hands were substantially larger. His legs would be more massive. Show's arms however, would be a bit larger and certainly more toned.

Mind you, I'm not knocking Show; but Andre, for whatever reason, just had a mystique to him that has never been matched by any of the other titans like Kali, Gonzalez, Silo Sam, etc...and while Show is way better than those guys, he'll never quite have the same impact and aura.

Blair, I think the old wrestlers like Heenan are just waxing nostalgic and want to protect their own when comparing Andre and Big Show, who they claim is part of this new X-games, foul mouth generation of wrestlers. We unfortunately don't have many photos of the young Andre with individuals of known height to estimate his peak height. However, here's probably a peak height Andre (early 20s) with 5'11" Verne Gagne (Click Here). Andre looks no more than 7 feet here.

If Big Show and Andre were ever in the ring together, Big Show would measure up very well, not just in height but in mass. Andre probably had a bigger chest and stomach (though Big Show's sneaking up quickly). However, Big Show looks like he has broader shoulders and he definitely has bigger arms and legs. Big Show is better proportioned.

Andre had certain "giant" features (giant head, overhanging forehead, huge hands, puffy hair, etc.) that made him appear scary. Big Show is a legitimate giant as well. Check out the size of Big Show's hands next time he's on TV. Alex can comment on this too, having shaken his hand. There are probably only a handful of people walking the planet who are proportioned like Big Show.

I think peak height, Big Show had Andre by an inch (7'0.5" to 6'11.5"). Big Show appears taller next to McMahon than Andre ever did, unless Andre was standing on a box.

Texas Tom said on 14/Oct/06
The guy with him in a lot of the cake pics is Yvonee Robert Jr...billed as 6-1, dunno how legit that is.

All factors considered, if that cake is 7-4, Andre looks around 7 feet flat subtracting hair...and what I figure are 1.5-2 inch heels on those shoes. All told he looks about 7-2 in those shoes. Standard shoes would place him at 7-1.5 if he were measured with them on...which could explain the often cited trainer's claim.

Danimal said on 14/Oct/06
For anyone who doesn't read French, apparently that cake is 7'4" in height and the top of Andre's head is hitting it. Subtract shoes and voila! He very well could have been 7'1"-7'2" without shoes and the big puffy hair.

Alex, I officially started contributing this this site in January 2005. At that time there was no Rock, no Undertaker. Only Hogan and Andre the Giant. I was fascinated with Hogan's height loss which became noticeable to me, WELL, become others ever suspected it.

Those are some great pics Blair. I still think Andre was a legit 7'1" at his peak. There's just a lot of early footage that I remember seeing back in the day that's a lot harder to come by these days to prove it conclusively. A lot of pics floating around the net are from the 80's when he was sure to have lost height topping 500 pounds and his back surgery in the mid 80's.
Blair said on 13/Oct/06
Any photos of Andre in the ring can't be taken into consideration because if the other person is in the foreground this will cause the other person to look taller also the angle of the camera will trick the eye. Notice the pics I provided and Andre is standing behind a bunch of guys in one of them. He is well over a foot taller then all of them. At least one of these guys has to be 6 feet tall since 6 feet tall is a common height. This picture is taken straight ahead on a regular camera at a wedding and is taken from someones photo alblum. These are the most real pictures of Andre out there.
Blair said on 13/Oct/06
I provided solid proof from citing some wrestlers to the photos listed below. He was at least 3 inches taller in these photos than at Wrestlemania 3. If you read some of the shoot interviews of wrestlers they all say that Andre was much larger and taller than The Big Show who is 7 feet tall. They call Big Show a very large well proportioned man and say that Andre was a giant. Who would know better than the wrestlers from his time since they spent more time with him than anybody else. Some of these shoot interviews are cited below.

Chad, you didn't mention Andre's height at the time of his death 'till several sentences later. It is not my fault that your statements meander all over the place without a clear point. It is also not my fault that you present evidence that is clearly skewered...then basically admit it, and yet refuse to acknowledge that it has undermined your statements. To say nothing of the fact that you claim we're inching back to 7-4...a height virtually EVERY SINGLE LEGIT POSTER HERE HAS DISCOUNTED ENTIRELY.

Hey KingNick,
Danimal failed to inform you he was a member of the clueless. If I remember correctly I was one of the first that stated Andre was never 7'4". Everyone else at that time was claiming 7'4" plus some. It wasn't until the pic of Wilt came out that many here lowered their estimates down to a more reasonable figure.

Tom,
I can see you are the type of person that keeps going on and on like the energizer bunny!. I challenged you about twisting my statement about Andre possibly being less than 6'9" near the end of his life and you changed its meaning totally!. I pointed that out and you continue to avoid your obvious blunder. Stop the B.S. and explain to the rest of the board how you came up with the idea I was contradicting others that claimed he was not over 6'9" and to further contradict my agreement that Rob's 6'11.5" peak was an ideal estimate?. Hmm, seems like you need to understand simple english Tom!. Come on and stop the non-sense!. Tom, I'm sure your an upstanding person so lets put this to rest and enjoy the board postings?. I will say that there is not a single person in here that is 100% correct, but I will not put up with someone that takes simple opinions and blows them way out of perspective like you do!. Cheers!

that photo with the rockers is at a bad angle, and you cant judge his true height from that photo. In his late years (late 1980s) he was at least 6'10 inches tall. If you look at those photos with big john studd, who everyone agrees that he is a legit 6'7, it easily makes andre 6'10 if not 6'11.

From view all the evidence and pics on alot of websites, his real peak height seems to be around 7'1 and no more. 6'10 when he was closer to his death. None of this 6'8 or shorter, that would make big john studd in those pics around 6'4...and im pretty sure he was taller than that!

And yet you use it as evidence, Uh-huh. It's really hard to imagine why no one takes your opinion seriously.

"Tom, you work so hard at trying to twist my words into a 'mound of drivel'" No Chad. You do that work exceptionally well on your own:

"Another point that needs correction was the fact I was not talking about the ones that claim his peak height was not over 6'9".

As far as twisting your words, I asked you to further explain your murky statements regarding the rockers picture in which you blatantly disregarded so simple a matter as depth perception.

Next up, please feel free to send a picture of Andre standing 40 feet from Willie Shoemaker. Maybe we'll get a stunning admission that it's not a "straightforward shot."

So now try to come back down to earth and develope some common sense. Yes, the pic of Andre standing with the rockers is not a straight forward shot. Tom, you work so hard at trying to twist my words into a "mound of drivel" that you just make yourself look like a dork!. Another point that needs correction was the fact I was not talking about the ones that claim his peak height was not over 6'9". I was refering to ones that claimed Andre as being shorter than 6'9" near the end. How in the world you got that twisted up I will never know?. Andre could have had a peak height of 6'11.5" in his early years and have lost down to 6'8". That's only a 3.5" loss of height through out his entire wrestling carreer. So Tom, in the future please try to look at my post with a little more "depth" and stop waisting your time making yourself look so smart, lol.

"If Andre was indeed no shorter than 6'9", then the Rockers must be what? 6'5"

Chad, are you saying you see a four inch height difference between Andre and the Rockers in those pictures?

Ummmm, I'm looking for a polite way to broach this question , but...are you taking depth perception into account here?

Also, I'm just not sure how many times this needs to be addressed:

"Way looks like we are getting so much closer to that 7'4" billed height again?."

First of all, let's not ignore the fact that this sentence is borderline indecipherable. I mean "Way looks...?" Listen folks, I realize that these are casual postings and grammar will often times go out the window...I'm guilty of some butchery on occasion. But please can't there be just a tiny bit of proofreading performed so that sentences are at least logical?

Then again when people ignore concepts as obvious as depth perception/Perspective....I'm not sure the near incomprehensible nature of certain posts is the biggest issue that needs to be addressed.

To Wit:

You will not be seeing Andre's listing upgaded to 7-4. No serious poster on here has ever lobbied for it or even entertains the notion.

Then there is also this maddening bit:

"Hmmm, maybe looks like 6'7"-6'8" was more true at his death than most want to believe."

I'm sorry, but, when did this become Celebritydeathheights.com? Really, this is getting disgraceful. Why is this morbid point continually being exploited? It doesn't take a genius to figure out that Andre's crippling condition affected his height...but for people like yourself CHAD, to use it to prove an unclear point that you yourself don't even seem to cling to very well...it's at best annoying.

Let's look at the following instance of pure illogic:

Gretz said on 10/Oct/06

Just my 2 cents: look at andre in one of his last WWF apparitions with the bushwackers at xxx.obsessedwithwrestling.com/pictures/a/andre/32.jpg (I don't write the entire URL cause the site doesn't allow direct link I think)
Andre is in probably the worst shape of his public life he's walking on crutches and he's slouching as much as somoene can ( I saw it live and I clearly remember cause Andre was my favorite wrestler- hey I'm french lol- and I was pretty shocked to see him so diminushed).
What I would like to know is What are the heights of the two bushwackers? they supposed to be both 6 footers which is ridiculous of course cause they weren't very tall but andre looks to have more than a full head over the two, in fact the guy on his right seems below his shoulder, I concede that on this pic maybe the guy isn't as straight as he could be too ok and maybe the angle is not very good (just like the one with the rockers but in the other way) ok ok but whatever andre still looks to have A foot on the two even with the crutches.
So maybe the bushwackers were much small than I thought ( below 5'9? while they were billed at 6'??) or there is something strange I don't see. anyone?
Chad said on 9/Oct/06
Way looks like we are getting so much closer to that 7'4" billed height again?. Danimal, you make it sound like Andre was as bad off in 83' as he was in the early 90's?. The man had some weight gain on him in the early 80's, but by no means was he as humped over and in the shape of his last days dude!. There's not a pic out there where it shows him any taller in 69' than he was in 83'. If anyone remembers the pic of him being interviewed by Vince in the 70's posted a while back shows a much leaner Andre, but he was no taller compared to Vince than in any mid 80's interview between the two!. Well, except when Andre was standing on a box, LOL. Also lets take this to the next level, to those on here that claimed Andre could not have been any shorter than 6'9", then in that pic with the Rockers it sure does seem to beg a different look. If Andre was indeed no shorter than 6'9", then the Rockers must be what? 6'5", I don't think so!. Looks like the 6'9" height just can't cut the mustard anymore. Hmmm, maybe looks like 6'7"-6'8" was more true at his death than most want to believe. I will agree that Rob has it pegged just right at 6'11.5 as MAX PEAK HEIGHT!!.

Gretz, I have no idea where this claim came from. Danimal was the first one to brought it up. I have no idea in which year the trainer made this claim. If I did know, I could find out whether it would be a legit claim or not.
Danimal said on 5/Oct/06
It's always going to be difficult to pin point his early height, seeing very few people are 7'0" to compare him to. All we can do is use our "logic" and realize that a 6'11.5" hunched and overweight Andre of 1983, would most definitely have been taller 15 years earlier, when he didn't have all that weight lugging him down and that hunch starting in his neck back. The man wasn't in good health in 1983 and did not appear to be as tall and as straight as a 1969 Andre, which is obvious. Big Show, keep waiting for evidence that will never come.
Gretz said on 5/Oct/06
Big Show,Do you happen to know where the 7'1.5" claim by his trainer came from?Searched every where, but other than this website have never seen another reference to it. thanks
Gretz said on 5/Oct/06
Big Show,I understand what your saying.Thats why I was trying to find the height of that wrestling promoter Jack Dale(1969 pics).Although I couldn`t find it I did at least find out that he used to be A wrestler himself. And since there were no high flying jump off the top rope guys back then(like Ray Mysterio or Super Crazy).I would think this guy has to at least be in the 5'6" range. So even at that I think Andre looks around 7'1" there. And consider the fact that Andre simply dwarfs everything around him in those pics(cars, dogs, people, ect.)much like Dalip Singh standing next to that suv.Put all this together and it makes A strong case for Andre being over 7'0" at the time.I mean even someone 6'9.75" dosen`t dwarf everything around him like that. But I do agree its still not proof unfortunatly. However, what it does do is strengthen my belief that Andre was over 7'0".

Interesting pic here...Andre as the Giant Machine, next to Blackjack Mulligan as the Big Machine...Blackjack was usually billed as 6-9, but has copped to having been 6-6 and change, and "about 6-8 in boots." Nowadays, at 64, blackjack has copped to being 6-4 and change.... At any rate, if we consider Blackjacks's admission, then Andre looks to me a good 5 inches taller here. Doesn't prove the 7+ notion totally, but still hurts the notion he was under 6-10. And this pic was taken in 86 after his back surgery.

Hey my first post was not posted. I typed a comment to the post from Blair, but mine didn't get posted. Maybe it was due to the fact that I accidently put Blair's name in the 'your name' bar instead of my own. Anyhow, I'll repeat my first post as it was a response to Blair's remark about Andre being legitemately measured by his trainer and stood 7'1.5. This is not true, his trainer claimed he was 7'1.5, which is a total difference with him actually measured him. As far as I'm concerned his claim holds just as much value as the one made by Dave Meltzer, meaning second to none.
The pics of him in the late '60's and early '70's prove nothing unless we see some picture of him next to someone who's height is irrefutable, like the pic with Wilt, which shows Andre to be 6'11.5 in 1983. Now I believe that Andre may have stood 7 foot sometime in his career. But since I can't prove it (yet) it stays just that...my beliefs. I can't claim Andre to be 7 foot or over, unless I have evidence that he might be taller. So far I have not seen this kind of evidence.

Talk about losing height,I just read an article that back in 1990.Lord Alfred Hayes was hit by A speeding car while crossing the street outside wwe studios and was left seriously injured. His injuries eventually led to him having several vertebrae removed from his spine shrinking his height from 6'0" to 5'6".Now,he passed away on 7-21-05 but I was wondering if anyone had any pics showing this dramatic height loss.Although it didn`t happen in the ring,it leads me to beleive that guys like Andre and Hogan could have easily lost 2 or 3 inches through out their careers considering all the injuries they had.

If Monsoon actually was 6'5"-6'6" the Monsoon Andre match on 24-7 sheds light on Andre being 7' in the early to mid 80's. However, there are pics with Baba that point to him being obviously shorter. Camera angles are everything. I see pics of Nash and Big Show that scream 6'10" and 7'....but also pics that say 6'8" and 6'10". Somewhere on this site I saw a full pic of Hogan and Nash together. Even if Hogan is 6'3" in that shot, Nash is every bit 6'10". Then he stands next to Hall and looks 6'8". I think weight with Andre and just the effort to stand up right was a chore. I'll bet that Big Show will lose a few in the next 5-10 years.

I wonder if it's so much that he lost height OR that he became so heavy that he rarely stood up straight.

im surprised nobody has mentioned hte clip tha was played last monday on raw. Monsoon was atleast 6'5" (was quite a bit taller then ali) and there were points of the match where the camera angle would favor andre bigtime, and at those moments he looked 8'! lol its funny, but he really did make gorilla look like a small person.

I have A steel cage match between Andre and John Studd from the philadelphia spectrum on 9-24-83.During certain parts of the match Andre looked to have 5+ inches on Studd.(no I don`t expect any one to take my word for it)Andre actually has to duck so he dosen`t hit the lights in the spectrum hallway.Anyway, the match ends when Andre jumps from the top rope on to Studd`s chest with his butt.Unfortunatley,I don`t know how to transfer it to the computer to post on you tube.
Danimal said on 27/Sep/06
Right Frank and that's Andre in 1989!!!! Studd was a legite 6'7" guy. It looks like Andre maintained quite of the height he exhibited when standing next to Wilt 5-6 earlier.. It also goes to show that Hulk Hogan really was a 6'6" guy in his day.

In any case, if Andre was still 6'11" in 1989, he was taller in 1969, by A LOT!!!
Danimal said on 27/Sep/06
Richard, I believer your pics confirm that Andre was still fairly tall by 1989 (the end of this life). Which also confirms to me that he was over 7'0" in his prime.
Frank said on 27/Sep/06
Andre has atleast 4 inches on Studd so he's more than alittle taller!!
Chief said on 27/Sep/06
Nice effort Richard. Interesting pics. I will agree...to disagree. As for the boots, they both look standard. Studd's sole stands out more because of the white sole in contrast to red boot. Andre has all black boots so it doesn't look to stand out as much. I could go on and on about the posture of both men, the camera effects, the distance between them, and so on; however I'm getting a little bored. I think some of those pics with Studd and Andre help support my case. That's cool!

Andre isn't even standing properly there but is still taller.
Richard said on 27/Sep/06
Chief, as an answer to your claim that Andre wasn't much taller than Studd I am reposting pictures I put up here long ago that clearly show Andre having more than 4 inches on studd. And yes, they are face to face.
the first two pictures are face to face but not a full body shot.

The next photo is taken seconds later during the same match and is a full body shot.

and... yet another full body shot from another match

and another... Click Here
from the first match here are a cap of Andre's feet to ensure that he didn't have anything fishy in his shoes Click Here
and a cap of Studd's (which look to have bigger soles than Andre's)

the fist match I capped from was actually Andre vs Jake Roberts and Studd was the referee. The second one was Andre vs Studd.
Here is another shot from the first match.. it becomes clear than in those rare occasions that Andre does stand fully erect he has almost 5 inches on studd.
again from the first match Click Here
Also... Andre in the twilight of his career next to 6'8 giant Baba

I think these pictures prove that he was indeed 6'11 in his prime.

The other day, I watched that 1985 tag team match with Hulk Hogan and Andre the Giant vs. Big John Studd and King Kong Bundy. Even though Andre's posture was not that great, you could still tell he didn't have much height over Studd even if he was to stand straight. It was even more obvious than the pictures I've seen with those two guys. I can see why Studd and Andre did not have an eye to eye standoff during the match because they wanted to try to preserve Andre's image and billed height and the fact he was SUPPOSED to be so much taller than anyone in the WWF. If you have the Hulk Still Rules DVD, you will find the match on there too.
Gretz said on 26/Sep/06
Monsoon may actually be his billed height of 6'6".He looks to have A 1/2 inch on Hill Billy Jim 6'5.5 go to (Click Here) moonshine bottle 4 pic 30 in the photo gallery.

Chief, I posted pics of studd and Andre a while back and they stood straight next to each other. Andre had him by 4 maybe 5 inches.
Gretz said on 26/Sep/06
Jason ,Andre is not off his feet there. But even if he was on stilts, for you to say he looks 7'0" is amazing in its self (LoL).
Gretz said on 26/Sep/06
Cheif,A while back Richard posted pics of Andre and John Studd face to face. And Andre was 4+ inches taller in the ones where Andre stood straight.About 3and 1/2 inches taller in ones where his back had A lump in it.Keep in mind those pics are from 85 and 89,After Andre`s peak height.Maybe Richard could post them again.
Gretz said on 26/Sep/06
After looking at the door pic more and using your formula JT.Your right,Andre would come out to around 7'4" if that was A 7 foot door.So clearly its A standard 6'8" door.Sorry for the mistake guys.It just goes to show how deceiving pictures can be if you don`t check them over carefully.
JT said on 26/Sep/06
I think Monsoon was in the 6'5" range. He was around the same height as Jesse Ventura in his cowboy boots and had around 3 inches on Ali when they were in the ring togather.
Frank said on 26/Sep/06

I would say Monsoon was 6ft 3 to 6ft 4
Mr. E said on 26/Sep/06
i saw wwe 24/7 with gorilla monsoon vs andre. They billed monsoon at 6'6" and I have no idea what he was legit. Andre had him by over 6" at least...any idea on monsoon?
Chief said on 25/Sep/06
I still maintain that Andre never made it to the 7 foot mark at his peak height. The 1969 pics do look cool and Andre was in good shape probably making him appear that much taller to some people. However, there are some camera angles to consider as well and of course he is standing next to people who are rather short in many of the photos. Looking at that pic with Verne Gagne would not change my mind either. I think Big John Studd makes for a good comparison against Andre since they were both big men. In the pics from them wrestling around 1985, it shows Andre to be not much taller at all(maybe a few inches) than Studd who was said to have been actually 6'6" or 6'7". I still state Andre's height of no more than 6'10" at his all time peak. Gretz, our numbers are different, but at least we know 7'4" is way out of the question. I would like to find some pics of Andre and Studd standing straight, up close face to face, so if someone can find those, then post it.

JT, you might be right,I was using the cinder block pics to validate the door being A 7'0" commercial door. But,Andre`s further from the door than I originally thought making an exact determination very tough. However,I think were in the same ball park with are height estimates of Andre,I think he was 7'0" or a bit over in that pic,you have him at 6'11 or A bit over.I can live with that.
JT said on 25/Sep/06
Gretz, we don't know for certain the door behind Andre is a 7 foot commercial door (Click Here). I actually think it's a standard 6'8" door. However, if Andre took a step back, it looks like his head would definitely hit the door frame and would be about as high as that small mark in the center of the door frame (~ 6'11"), maybe a bit more since Andre's not standing perfectly straight.
Cantstop25 said on 24/Sep/06
JT great pic af Andre wih Wahoo. Andre looks WELL over 7' in that pic! Though the angle does favor him. I do believe that Andre was over 7' at his peak.
Gretz said on 24/Sep/06
Chief,I do think Andre was less than 7'0",the question is what point in his career did he drop below that mark.In my opinion,Andre was close to or 7'1" in the 1969 pics,through-out the 70`s fractionally over to 7'0",until we arrive at the early 80`s and the Wilt pic where he might be still scratching 7 feet, sometime not long after this Andre dropped below 7'0".I don`t know if it was after his back surgery or what but by wm3 he looked between 6'10" and 6'11".Now if you don`t agree with me thats fine.I just want to see solid eveidence if you think he was like 6'10" back in 1975.And,I don`t think anyone on this site thinks Andre was ever his billed height of 7'4".On that box he looks more like 8'4".
Gretz said on 23/Sep/06
Yeah,it looks like you put the final nail in the coffin for the Andre-Bishop pic with the Wahoo comparison there JT.In an attempt to make Andre seem shorter, people will use pictures with the worst angles, depth perceptions,or not showing the whole body. The one showing Andre slouched on the ropes and Ted Dibiase half way across the ring(and the poster proclaiming Andre 6'6" and shrinking)comes to mind.I also remember one showing Big Show and Brock Lessner with A strange angle where Big Show looked only 3or 4 inches taller than Brock and the poster actually said he was 6'6" and was serious. The thing I`m trying to say here is some people will go to any lenth to prove their point.Even with the most questionable evidence.
Chief said on 23/Sep/06
I see that some fans of Andre just simply refuse to even consider him being less than 7' or less than the listed 6'11.5". The Bishop picture is just one of several pieces of evidence that points to Andre being shorter than the listed height on this site. So, what if the picture isn't perfect; it still shows something. If the Bishop picture was full length than that would just make it all the more devastating, showing Andre's lack of height. Cinder block references are not going to solve anything. Also Hogan's height is highly disputed also, so that doesn't make the best comparison with him standing near Andre, even though Andre certainly did not tower over Hogan in the WM3 standoff. Let's ask this question for one other thought. If Andre actually stood 7 ft. or more, do you think they would have made Andre stand on a box to help the illusion of being 7'4" in those old interviews with Andre and Vince McMahon? This is a fact that he did stand on a box so he could tower over Vince. If Andre was actually 7 ft. or over, than they would find no need for Andre to be elevated for the videotaped interview.
JT said on 23/Sep/06
There is something funny with the Bishop photo, if that guy is only 5'8", especially since you know Andre would have been wearing his 2+ inch heel cowboy boots if he's going on national TV. Wahoo McDaniel, ex NFL linebacker and wrestler, is usually listed at 5'11" though there's a 6'1" listing on the Denver Bronco website(Click Here). Here's Andre with Wahoo, and both are wearing cowboy boots.
(Click Here) There is at least a 13 inch height difference. Even if Wahoo is down to 5'10" at that point, Andre would be 6'11".

I think Andre's like Big Show, where they don't look as tall as they actually are given their huge torsos and their poor posture when they walk. You can pause the Andre-Wepner video where Andre rears back to headbutt 6'5" or 6'6" Wepner and the height difference is significant. It seems like Big Show's been trying to stand more erect recently and he's been towering over everyone (almost a foot on the McMahons).
Big Show said on 23/Sep/06
I have a video of Hogan and Andre and their match at Saturday Night's Main Event. Before the match they show a clip of their contract signing. After both have signed the contract they stand up and have a short face-off. Andre looks 5 inches taller than Hogan and Hogan is in his cowboy boots, while Andre is wearing dressing shoes...weird. Does anyone know how to edit videos so I can post it on youtube, 'cause it's too big now.
Gretz said on 23/Sep/06
And you can make John Studd and Ernie Ladd shorter all you want. It`s not going to down grade Andre`s height any.The fact of the matter is masonary dosen`t lie.Andre`s back is close to the wall in the Backlund pic and the cinder blocks come out to at least 7'0" for Andre`s height. And you can`t downgrade the height of cinder blocks like you can wrestlers.
mike said on 23/Sep/06
i think 6 11 would be precise around the time andre fought hulk hogan possibly 7 feet there was at least 5-6inch difference in the staredown.
Gretz said on 23/Sep/06
We can see by the Backlund pic that Andre is at least 7'0" by the cindre blocks,so its clear something funny is going on in the bishop pic.we have Backlund and Bishop standing around the same height to Andre. Now Backlund I think most would agree is 4 to 5 inches taller than Bishop. But we don`t have A pic showing their full bodies with Andre and Bishop so it really is a weak peace of evidence.
Mr. E said on 23/Sep/06
As a mark, I bought Andre's 7'4"....even 7'5" until that Wrestlemania 3 face off, that would have to make Hogan 6'11". Rob, it's Andre the Giant...He's 7', give the man his due...evidence points to 6'11" but it's Andre, I say 7'.
OOFatman said on 22/Sep/06
Interesting find Richard! To me it looks as though the boots are 15.5" long. Size increments are officially 1/3", or about .85 cm in the U.S. My size 15 shoes are about 13.5" long, or 2" shorter than "Andre's". Take 2" divided by 1/3", you get 6 sizes difference. 15+6=size 21 boots. It's been said that he wore size 22 boots, which I could certainly believe if indeed these were his boots.
sf said on 22/Sep/06
I'm just gonna stick with Rob's estimate. I think 6'11".5 is a very good estimate for Andre's height. I think there is enough evidence to support that Andre was about 7'0" in his prime, which is still absolutely amazing.
Gretz said on 22/Sep/06
Richard,That sounds right.I`ve heard many anouncers say Andre wore a size 22 boot.
Texas Tom said on 22/Sep/06
Chief, that picture has their legs chopped off.
Richard said on 22/Sep/06
Check this out.. Andre's boots were on sale.
And.. they had them next to a tape measure... the sales ad stated that they were a size 28.. which is just bull.. they are 15 inches long judging from the tapemeasure. Now I have a pair of size 15 shoes and they are 33.5 cm from the heel to the tip of the shoe. Making them 13.2 inches long.. 1.8 inches shorter than the boots they claim were Andre's. It's said that one shoe-size is between 0.5 and 0.7 cm.(one inch is 2.54 cm) The difference between Andre's shoes and mine were thus 4.572 cm. Now if we divide that by 0.7 we get roughly 6.5. Which means Andre had 6.5 sizes more than me. Size 15 plus 6.5 equals 21.5.

IF these shoes were indeed andre's he wore a size 21 or 22 boot.
Viper652 said on 22/Sep/06
Man, Im pretty torn about Andre's height right now. I figured he was at least 7-0 in those late 60s pictures, but that Andre and Joey bishop picture is strong evidence that he might be under it.
JT said on 22/Sep/06
Andrew, Bob Backlund is listed at 6'1". (Click Here) Andre isn't quite a full head taller but it's close. If Backlund's a legit 6'0", Andre looks at least 6'11", possibly more.
Halb said on 21/Sep/06
TBS looks a lot taller than those chaps than Andre does with that other fella.
JT said on 21/Sep/06
The photo with Joey Bishop was probably in connection with Andre's appearance on the Tonight Show (Johnny Carson) in the mid-70s. Bishop was the guest host that evening. The photo angle favors Bishop, who is also standing in front of Andre. If Andre's head is 12 inches, there could be a 14-15 inch difference. Editor Rob has Bishop at only 5'8" though. Is he any taller? I'm sure Andre was wearing his cowboy boots for that appearance, given his claimed height of 7'5" that evening (Click Here).

Here's Big Show around two guys also in the 5'8" range (Click Here) (Click Here).
Andrew said on 21/Sep/06
Chief ... where are you getting the idea to downgrade his height, or are you kidding? The doorway measurement concept is pointless. In my building alone, there are three different doorway heights from around 6-7 to 7-0.

The first thing we need to agree upon is that his head is at least 12 inches from chin to top. If a normal man's head is 9.5 inches, then this surely seems a reasonable guess based on seeing his monstrous head next to normal guys. Then, we find him in a photo of someone we know to be about 6-0 or 6-1. If that guy comes up to Andre's chin or less, then we know he's at least 7-0. I still can't see how people are coming up with less than 7-0.

Andre and Joey - when was Andre in the Rat Pack? Did he tap?
Gretz said on 20/Sep/06
Thats A commercial door frame in that Andre pic.7ft. right above the 1/2inch metal ridge. So if we move Andre back a little,he comes out at around 7'0" again.Just like in the 3 cinder block pics.
Chief said on 20/Sep/06
Yes, it is time for a downgrade in Andre's height. Let it be known. Be sure to look at that pic with him standing near the doorway.
Andrew said on 20/Sep/06
Once again ... I'm 6-0 even and stood next to Andre around 1985 and came up to the bend in his shoulder. (No, I don't have a photo -- didn't know it was going to happen, and we didn't have cameras everywhere we went back then.) So, given his proportions, he was at least a foot taller. My personal guess is 7-1. The cinder block photos are the best yet.
Texas Tom said on 20/Sep/06
I love statements like this:

"The sooner you come to realize this the better off you will be."

Yeah, surely such an admission would be a big boost to my quality of life.

"I mean you got a pic a few posts down showing him standing on his freaking tip toes trying to look taller beside a man that was slumping somwhat to help make Andre look that much taller!."

Yep, that Andre is a real master of illusion...plus the fact that his upraised boot is clearly visible...obviously more craftiness on the part of the Giant.

Okay, so according to the new prevailing logic, we are supposed to downgrade Andre to 6-9 based on Gordon Solie's remark on Ernie Ladd and an interview with Ben Davidson regarding the same.

But of course, we can rest assured that Ben Davidson is a legit 6-8...this football height is immediately accepted.

Jason said on 20/Sep/06
I really do think Studd was 6'6'' and was the referred to legit 6'7'' in his wrestling boots. Besides any video or photographic evidence on offer, the guy really doesn't look any taller than 6'6''.

NFL stats (unlike NBA) are usually legit and accurate to within a half inch. Usually, but not always.

Viper, I was wondering where Danimal went. I guess he doesn't like me?
