5'7" Jacqueline Hill consistently had an inch on William Hartnell at all times in ballet flats. He was only 5'6" by the '60s when he was already in very poor health. He might have been 5'8" in his youth, but he wasn't anything over 5'6" by the time of the role he's most famous for. He looked so tiny and frail next to William Russell and Jacqueline, and didn't even manage to tower Carole Ann Ford as much as he should have if he were as claimed. I think this is a severe case of him losing height, combined with 5'8"/5'8.5"-listed Patrick Troughton being mistakenly thought of as smaller, despite being clearly taller.

Just compare both of them against 5'6" Anneke Wills. Bill is bang-on the same, while Pat has a couple of inches on her. Frazer Hines had an inch on Anneke, too, so his peak height, while not the peak 5'8" claim he makes, was probably 5'7". An inch below Pat and an inch above Anneke is what the episodes show for Frazer. Watch the actual episodes, because these heights are a mess.

William Hartnell was born 113 years ago today. He appeared in over 75 movies, but was best remembered as the first Doctor Who, a part which he played from 1963-1966. 👾🙄

William suffered a series of strokes and passed away aged 67. 😢

Funnily enough, I remember fairly well watching him in 'Doctor Who', sometimes from behind a chair, when I was an ankle biter!

Both Billy and Jon Pertwee feature in the film "Will any gentlemen? And when standing together the top of Billy's head just reaches Jon's eyeline, so I think 5' 8" is accurate.

Hartnell was only 1.71 m(5'7 1/2") or 1.68 m(5'6"). He's considerably small next to some of his co-stars in DW.
