Viggo over the last decade has looked like a guy losing height. His posture seems increasingly terrible. Posture might be the full story, though he is at an age where you wouldn't be shocked at some height loss. In his prime I thought he could look a comfortable 5'11 at times, today I wouldn't go anything over 5'10.75. 5'11 peak and 5'10.5 today is possible.

Rob, Viggo is due a slight downgrade. Either because of age or over-listing, I feel it is likely the latter. He did not look nearly three inches taller than 5'8 listed David Cronenberg at Cannes this year, in the same footwear. In fact, Viggo had a visibly larger heel.

As you can see, Viggo is not passing for this listed height of 5'10.75. These photographs indicate he is 5'10.25-5'10.5. He has 2.25-2.5 inches on David, at best, with an added heel at the red carpet.

Rob, did you only downgrade him to 5'10 3/4 recently? I swear I was here not too long ago and he was the full 5'11. That's the reason I came back to this page, to argue he was more 5'10 range lol.

But yeah. I looked at some pictures of Viggo next to Karl Urban back in the LOTR days, and Karl looked to have an easy 2 inches on him. And today Miles Teller has 2 inches on him as well.

I don't think he's lost any height. I don't think he was ever a full 5'11.

I have mentioned before that I collect dolls, with a particular interest in celebrity ones. My one male doll is one of Aragorn, from 'The Lord of the Rings', who came in a package with my beautiful Liv Tyler as Arwen doll. I will probably acquire some more this year because they are introducing long- haired male ones - and I have a fondness for long-haired guys - and always have had, since I was in my teens. It doesn't have to be very long but just long enough to look unconventional and a little rebellious!

I'd like a Legolas doll too, as he has nice long hair.

I will go for 5ft11.25 for Viggo. I have three of the above films, as well as the Lord of the Rings trilogy, and more besides. He is always a guaranteed good watch, our Viggo, and he has Danish roots. 😋👍

I found that bit of info out as I suspected that he had Scandinavian roots because of the spelling of his surname.

Actually, Tolkien later said that Aragorn was 6 ft. 6! Viggo Mortenson is obviously much shorter than that but it didn’t really matter at all. Morten son did a great job portraying the character of Aragorn.

This guy has long arms and legs and an lean frame that makes him look taller. He might be very close to 5'11 flat which is a fine height to be really. You'll be taller then 99% of women at that height and around 70% of men.

Viggo is tough as most guys this build he is basically average male height wise.
But has fairly long arms possibly legs and thin build no idea where people get any other read.
This makes him look taller standing next to 5 10 guys he looks taller so a weak 5 11 is my guess.
The "ONLY" time he looked big was in a crime movie 90s with dennis hopper.
On a perfect day zero g and breakfast I bet he is 5 11 and 170.

He did look very tall in A Perfect Murder. My guess would be that Viggo was 5'8 when he did a perfect murder in shoes he would of been 5'9 which is tall.Today he would of shrunk down to 5'7 flat feet, shoes 5'8. Many actors measure their height with shoes on. If a person goes to prison his Mugshot would be with shoes on. If a man is 5'8 flat feet he will be listed as 5'9 in a Mug Shot because he will have shoes on. To add everyone is measured with shoes on mostly males because men have bad hygiene so we are told to keep our shoes on. Viggo's Mugshot in the movie a Perfect Murder is purely fabricated to give him that extra appearance to enhance his manhood. Actors wear shoe lifts for many roles as well so he could of had 4 inch shoe lifts when he had his Mug Shot taken for the movie.Today Viggo is 5'7 barefoot, shes he is 5'8.

I could buy anything from 5'10.5"-5'11" range. Anyone know what he claims? Btw, I'd never read much into movie Mugshots. There's no way of knowing when they're accurate and really, there's no incentive for one to be accurate. I know of at least some cases of inaccurate Mugshots in movies.

I think Viggo was the envy of many men when he was the love of Liv Tyler's Arwen in the 'Lord of the Rings' trilogy! My boyfriend was one of them!
Being as the trilogy was so very successful, it will doubtless have typecast some of its stars. Either that, or it brought them to the attention of movie lovers everywhere, as happened to me, and triggered off an interest in finding out what other sorts of film genre the cast members may act in.
Viggo Mortensen was one of the many stars that I checked out and now I own 5 other of his films on top of the LOTRs!
I know many women find him to be dark and brooding and I have seen some typically female lustful comments in magazines!
I knew he had to be reasonably tall as he is taller than 5ft10 Liv Tyler, quite a sizeable chunk taller than 5ft6-7 Sandra Bullock as seen in '28 Days' and he doesn't look out of place with 6 footers in 'A Dangerous Method' or in 'the Prophecy.'
I thought he was 5ft11.5 - 6ft, so I was a little out. I really didn't think he would be below 5ft11!

I am a great fan of the lord of the rings Peter jackson's movie series...in the first trilogy, Viggo does look a strong 5'11" and a couple of times even taller...for example with Liv Tyler in the first movie he has maybe 2" on her, and in the return of king face to face with Hugo Weaving there're less than 2.5-3" between they, considering that Weaving is at least 6'1.5"...
However I think he is 5'10.75-11"...this listing sounds good...maybe in the lord he had thick shoes or boots

Been watching all the LOTRs recently and been noticing his height a lot - it's weird because everyone here seems to be stressing the same height over and over again and debating between .5 of an inch! To me, he can look either slightly shorter OR slightly taller than Orlando Bloom, and always very slightly taller than McKellan, as would be expected if McKellan was hunching with age. I'd say that it's best to view his height as between 5'10 and 5'11, even between those two you're not going to notice very much difference, and when you consider footwear, changing posture, hairstyles and shrinking/growing (with rest) during the day you're going to get almost nowhere trying to determine which fine gradation he hits.
Perhaps I'm buyust in saying this, I have a friend who claims 5'10, I claim 5'11 but there is no discernible difference in height between us two, people think we're exactly the same. I have no doubt he's been measured at 5'10, and me at 11, but with his bigger hair and both our changing postures there is literally too little in it to call.
Point is we'd all like to know the exact number, but I think trying to argue within half an inch is a never ending cycle, because no one had an exact height...

This listing is bang on accurate. I just saw some pictures from when me and my family met him in Copenhagen in the summer of 2001. He seemed close to 5'11 in those pics. I was around 4'11 myself at the time as I was only 11 years old and he looked to have 1ft on me, he also looked roughly 0.5" taller tahn my dad who was 5'10.25 at the time.

I watched 'A History of Violence' (great film) Viggo co-stared with Ed Harris (5'9") but they never really stood side by side so I couldn't make a comparison but Mortensen generally looks a like a 'taller side of average' guy. I'd estimate 5' 10.5" - 5' 11" but he definately isn't six foot.

He often passes of as 6 ft to me. Definately above 5'10". 5'11" barefoot is accurate I'm sure. He had a solid two inches on Liv Tyler so either he is taller than 5'11" or Liv is not quite 5'10".

i heard he can be tough.sweetest guy in the world for a couple of minutes,signing and posing for about 5 of us.i only asked for a photo with him.when one guy asked for one extra autograph on his 8x10 that he missed,viggo flipped out and made a scene over ebay and sellers,which was ridiculous cause,then dont sign for them if you knew that already.bruce dickinson of iron maiden did the same exact thing to me and my friends last spring.way worse.after signing 20 photos and albums.to make it worse,that basketcase came up to us in a bar.we didnt go up to him and bother him.some nights i made it a rule to not approach bruce in a bar if he was alone or with some friends.if i saw a bigger crowd and he was signing,then i approached.celebs need to get a grip.at least viggo apoligized minutes later in the street.

He looks near 6'0 in the snap above.

I can't think of a Hollywood star more comfortable with their height than he is. So much so he probably is slightly embarrassed for colleagues of his that do wear lifts!

5'10"- similar to Orlando Bloom(weak 5'10"). Besides Vincent Cassel is most likely a weak 6'1". There is a difference of 6cm between him and Viggo in Eastern Promises. (Great movie by the way. For more proof. Viggo is not much taller than ED Harris in Apaludsa and identical to Sean Bean 1,78cm in LOTR.

I just saw the movie Appaloosa with Ed Harris & Viggo Mortensen. (Good movie.) In the opening scenes, Harris who's supposedly 5'9 and who directed the movie managed to have the shots done where he looked taller than Viggo i.e., Harris on a taller horse, Viggo sitting, Ed standing. Ed walking first up the stairs, Viggo behind and lower, etc. Until near the end where they are standing side by side. Ed has a longer neck and head proportionately, but there was a good 4" difference between them with Viggo being the taller. Who knows if one or both were wearing lifts. But Viggo appeared quite a bit taller. If he is only 5'11, that would not work with Ed Harris being 5'9.

From the pics I seem of him and in comparison to other actors (i.e. Lords of the Rings), I think Viggo is 5'10" barefoot, and 5'11 with normal shoes. It is possible that his publicists make him wear lifts during premieres or public presentations which is common in Hollywood. For example, I have seem pictures of Viggo with Urban in which there is only two inches of difference between their heights.

Viggo's ethnically northern European, (I think Danish and Norwegian) where they do tend to be closer to 6 feet on average. Though I would purport to say that is what the reporter used as reference. I think he's 5'11" no problem, see here:

Haven't seen Alatriste yet, I'd like to, but I'm not sure when it will be released in the states. I guess he is somewhere between 5ft10 and 5ft11, I've looked but I haven't seen a single listing for him other than 5ft11. Some pics of him do make him look small, and one interview I read described him as being very lean and of average height. Last time I checked 5ft11 wasn't average height except overseas like the Netherlands, I always thought in America average was between 5ft9 and 5ft10.

I just saw A Perfect Murder not to long ago, and Michael Douglas(listed at 5ft10, but many consider to be more like 5ft9)was the same height as Viggo. Now, a lot of interviews I've read with Mortensen always describe him, as not being so tall, but rather lean. I'm wondering if Viggo is shorter than 5ft11, more like 5ft9.5 and because he's so lean he looks a lot taller on screen. He does wear cowboy boots in a lot of his films, or at least some variety of boot, which could put him around 5ft11/5ft11.5. 5ft11 barefoot/6ft with shoes is by no means short, so why would people say this?

5ft 11 barefeet for Viggo, I agree with Rob's estimates. There is a perfect example of this height by an anonymous quote at the bottom, referring to scenes of Viggo and Liv Tyler in The Two Towers. They are both barefoot in these scenes, and he still has the height advantage of an inch on the 5ft10 Tyler. Worst case scenario she is 5ft9 and he is 5ft10, but that would still make Viggo 5ft11 in shoes and Tyler 5ft10 in shoes, giving weight to the 5ft11 sightings, as well as the fact he wears cowboy boots which have a good 2 inch sole, when he's not strolling around barefoot.

Glenn, 100% sure. I used to work for him and saw him at least four days per week. Don is 5'7" barefoot. Maybe he was 5'8"+ when he was younger or when he was filming Miami Vice, but now he is 5'7" and 5'8" + with shoes depending on the heel. In the Miami Vice episode I mentioned he is about an inch shorter then Viggo, and Viggo is the same height as Phillip (Tubs). Don't take my word for it, watch the episode.

Elio, perhaps you are right about the comparison between Viggo and Don Johnson in Miami Vice (Red Tape episode). If Don was wearing 2.5" lifts (which is very possible) then Vigoo is probably @ 5'9 1/2 to 5'10" barefoot, and a little over 5'10" or close to 5'11" with normal shoes. If you have a chance to see the episode you can actually see them standing next to each other and you can tell Viggo is wearing low heeled shoes, and Don? well, suspicious footwear covered by a long hem in his pants.

However, in the same scene Viggo stands next to Phillip Michael Thomas (Tubs) and he is the same height and you can clearly see that they are wearing normal shoes. How tall is Phillip? Finding his height can give a clue of Viggo's true height. Lou Diamond Phillips (6'00" by his own admission)is also in the scene with Viggo, Phillip, and Don, and he towers them by at least two inches.

If you see Viggo in the Miami Vice episode titled red tape, you will notice that he is a little taller than Don Johnson, who I know for a fact is 5'7" barefoot (I used to work for him) and 5'8" with normal shoes.
