American actress best remembered for roles in films such as The Night of the Hunter, Winchester '73, Lolita and The Poseidon Adventure.
I must have grown some after I was twenty, because I was five feet two then, and I'm five feet five now. Blanche says it's because I'm an actress, and when I need to be tall, I get tall, and when I need to be short, I shrink. And it's the same with weight and age. She kids about it, but there seems to be some truth in it.

Looks about right next to Bob Mitchum in The Night of the Hunter.

In heels which give about 3 inches she's still between 1 and 2 inches shorter than Peter Sellers in Lolita. If he was 5'8.5" I'd say this is spot on.

Definitely an actress who did not age well, she was pretty attractive in her early years.

Good grief, I find it hard to believe she was only 53 in The Poseidon Adventure, she looked at least 65 in that film!!

She was quite rough I thought Little Sue, wouldn't surprise me if she was a beast under the sheets!

Watching Phone Call from a Stranger right now. Not sure Gary Merrill's height I've seen anything from 5'6"-5'10", but Michael Rennie I think was near 6'4". Winters was married to Vittorio Gassman around this time, I've put in a request for him. Are Merrill and Rennie worth listing?

I'd say around 5ft 4. Very slim in these pics, filled out in later years, a rather racy lady according to her biogs!

Wow that was quick! I think it was Winchester '73 I saw the other day with Jimmy Stewart not Gary Cooper which she was in and she had on sizeable heels and I guessed she was 5'4"-5'5" from a distance. At other times not showing her feet she could look noticeably taller next to Stewart but I think it was the old box trick.
