American actor and director best known for films like Mystic River, Fast Times at Ridgemont High, Dead Man Walking, Carlito's Way, 21 Grams, Milk, Sweet & Lowdown and The Tree of Life. In a 1987 edition of the Daily LA News, it described him as a "5-foot-8" man. On a CCW permit application Sean had his Height listed as "509" and Weight as "175".

I really don't think he's a 5'8 because look at his over all body, it's so obvious that he's a smaller person, in comparison to Connor Mcgregor who is 1.3 cm taller, their body dimensions are really different, for a 1.3 cm height difference connor looks much much taller. And notice how Sean Penn wears lifts with a very noticeable heel on the outside. IMO I'd give the man nothing more that 5'6 Max

Actually he's more of a strong 5'8" since he can look taller than his real height without using chuncky boots or anything, or at least he COULD in his prime. Nowadays he might slouch a little more and have a poorer posture since he's 53.

Rob i know a guy who was in Pakistan who met Penn during his trip. That guy is about 5'8-5'9 range similar to me. He said Penn was a little shorter (claiming 5'8 is correct) than him so for a non height discuss-er such as my friend the estimate should be less than he told. He said about 5'8. So i think he is more 5'6.5-5'7. Because this guy says he is 5'10 (i.e. my friend) and i am honest i say 5'8, we Indians (except myself) lie about heights by 2-3 inches. If i become a celebrity which is highly unlikely ill always say 172 cm (5'7.75) so i don't get embarrassed when you spot me even though i am almost 174 at 2 pm. Rob you are a detective.

Claiming your 174 is fine, but everybody has potential to look above/below their mark, sometimes it's shoe differences, other times posture changes, even our clothes, our physical looks can all effect how others think we are, which of course might not be what they actually measure.

Believable, Penn seems to struggle with being a solid 5'8" at times. In that movie with Nicole Kidman, either Penn or the director seemed concerned with his height compared to her's, never seen the leads of a thriller sit down so much.

I'm not sure if there's a shot with shoes visible, but Penn stands toe to toe with David Suchet in The Falcon and the Snowman, and Penn's about 1" taller. I believe Suchet is on record stating that he's under 5' 7" (so 5' 6" is probably correct for him), which puts Penn at about 5' 7".

What a shame you people caring about rather someone has such height or not. I'm an art director, and as a matter of my profession let me tell you that actors are just as tall as the camera makes them look like. There are many tricks for doing that,and actually no good director really cares about a man's height. When it comes to "portray" the somewhat "handsome" man, what rather matters is the the facial features and the proportion of the body, and since there are aren't too many tall guys whose proportions really satisfy the expert's eye (legs or arms too long sometimes or heads too small,hands too big, etc) most of hollywood good selling actors are not tall men. Sean Penn is 1,72 mt at best and so what. None of us care at all. He sells and that's good for the industry.

in the movie state of grace, they really managed to make him look like a 5'10 guy but so many other movies like "bad boys" "at close range" "casualties of war" and "the interpreter" make him look like a 5'6-5'7 guy.

Glenn also saw 5'7" recently: For me it was always clear that Penn is a 5'7" guy, ok maybe a strong 5'7" but he doesn't reach 5'8" especially not these days and honestly I doubt he ever was 5'8". Before celebheights came on I looked on the net and couldn't believe that this guy was 5'8", 5'9" or hell I even saw 5'10" for him!!! One of the best actors these days...fabulous. But he is on the shorter side of things and always was.

another thing is that Madonna who is about 5'3 never looked that much shorter than him and lets say the tallest she ever is is when she's wearing heels that give her 2 inches, she's only about an inch shorter than him. I really think Penn is in between 5'6 and 5'7 and wears lifts at premieres or during films if necessary.

From all the films I've seen him in, he always appeared to be on the short side.
Even when he was with Madonna, he only appeared a little taller than her. I think 5'8" sounds about right. A lot of these actors & musicians always appear taller on TV, but obviously this has a lot to do with lifts. Good actor though.
