I feel like Nixon's build and posture made him look kinda short. I'd say he looked at least 1 inch shorter than JFK so there's no chance of him being under 5'10. Nixon seemed to have a pretty big head, no?

For those wondering why Richard Nixon was listed as 5-10.5 in the Navy but 5-10 in 1957...I have a theory. Nixon tended to slouch. This was corrected when he was in the Navy when they enforced an upright posture, but over time Nixon after his Navy days reverted back to his natural slouch/hunched posture ala Alan Alda.

Rob, how tall do you think his brothers were?
Dude on the left I'm gonna say 6ft3 range and chubbier guy on the right maybe near 6ft1
Editor Rob
Another still and you can imagine 6ft 2 range at least for the taller one.

Looks 5'11'' with Kennedy in the debates when Nixon was in his late 40s. Definitely not 6'0'' like some sites list him. 5'10 when he got older.

Never more than 5-10 1/2.

looked like he could be 5,11 peak and 5,10 when he was older
Slim 6'1.5" said on 21/Aug/21
Yeah 181-182 mornings to 179 evenings is entirely possible
I’d even add a quarter inch if it were up to me
Rampage(-_-_-)Clover said on 19/Aug/21
Slim, I think Nixon was like Russell Crowe. Mainly a weak 5ft11 guy but maybe hit 5ft11½ first thing
ADAM VARCO said on 20/Jul/21
According to a physical he had in the white house, he was 5'11.5". He was almost the same height as Elvis. If you look at the picture, they look the same height.
Jay Tu said on 1/Mar/21
He was 5'10.5". Never realized he was only that tall.
slim 6'1 said on 13/Jan/21
179.5 could be possible

I have seen photos of him with 6'2 Sprio Agnew, couldn't be under 5'11. There could even be a chance of 5'11.75 for him.

Nixon's height is really quite puzzling. Here are his photos alongside George H W Bush from 1970:
Nixon was 57 at the time and even if he was only 5ft 10 at the time, he could still made Bush over 6ft 2. In 1969, Nixon met Prince Charles and Queen Elizabeth:
Nixon was 56 at the time and even if he was only 5ft 10 by then Charles had to be above that mark. Rob, don't you think Nixon made Bush looked like 6ft 2.25 and Charles 5ft 10.25?
Editor Rob
I don't think Nixon looked any greater than 4 inches shy of someone like George HW Bush.
In office he might still have managed a solid 5ft 10
viper said on 10/Dec/20
If I was a betting man Id say the 5-10 was later in the day measurement.
Nixon is a weird one. Crooked guy who was our best foreign affairs president
Average Heighted Male said on 9/Dec/20
Only 5ft 10 ½ !?!? And no peak height!? President Nixon deserves some more credit and respect to be labeled more of a sloid 5ft11. He looked barely shorter than President Ford(6'0" even). Also about 2.5 inches over Carter(5'9.5").
He was broad build and had hunched over shoulders. Not a small man though.
It's a shame he resigned. He was a decent President compared to many others. He should have did 8 years. He got caught in the Democratic lies and their efforts to impeach him. Basically a Trump of his time. Shame.
Rampage(-_-_-)Clover said on 9/Dec/20
Ford looks at least 6ft in that photo with Nixon

I think Nixon was 5' 10.5" peak. During his presidency I think he fell down to the 5' 10.25" range. I think in his final years during his late 70s and early 80s he was 5' 8.5"-5' 9". He looked an around inch taller than Jimmy Carter and 1.5 inches shorter than Gerald Ford who was around 6'.
Eric W Tam said on 7/Dec/20
Listed as 5'11 or 6' (think it was the former) everywhere. Eh, can't lie on physicals but yeah wasn't surprised that Mr. Watergate out of all people especially would inflate his height by a precious cm.
vastlybetter566 said on 6/Dec/20
Wow, Nixon just got a page. For whatever reason I was under the impression that he has had a page for years here. Perhaps because LBJ and JFK both had a page way before him.
Almost 180cm guy said on 6/Dec/20
Finally! I waited a long time for Nixon to get his page here! Did Nixon really said that he was 5ft 11.5? I saw some photos of him next to Fidel Castro from 1959 (though unfortunately I couldn't see what their shoes were cause nowhere to be seen but I will still search) and I wouldn't have thought the Nixon could be as short as 5ft 10.25, I think 5ft 10.5 is the lowest mark I would ever see him on. Unless Castro didn't even have 6ft 1. My guess is 5ft 10.75 for Nixon, maybe he once measured 5ft 11.5 early in the morning when he woke up.
Editor Rob
he was described that tall in the 70's for sure, although a journalist once telephoned the White House and was told Nixon was 5ft 11 and 175 pounds...
I did once read that during his earlier days he was supposed to have claimed 5ft 11.5...unfortunately I never screencapped the quote.
Rampage(-_-_-)Clover said on 6/Dec/20
Yeah 5ft11½ is a shoe height. More than an inch shorter than JFK
Nik J Ashton said on 5/Dec/20
@ Rob - How much height do you think he could have lost by the age of 44?
Editor Rob
it is possible a small fraction, but then sometimes you can have your height at different times of day or better posture...
Look at the example of
Clark Gable.
Age 41 he comes in at 6ft 1/2 inch.
Age 43 he got a 6ft 1/4 inch at physical.
Did he shrink or was it different circumstance like a time of day difference?
Canson said on 5/Dec/20
@Editor Rob: What are your thoughts? half inch height loss at age 44 or a different measurement (time of day) or a combination of both perhaps? Such as waking up 5’11 at 7am and got measured 5’10.5 at his 9 or 10 am physical and measuring 5’10” in the afternoon at his 1947 physical
Editor Rob
Could be possible shrinkage, or time of day, different posture/measuring rod too.
If you look at Nixon, his posture from 40's to 50's did look to get worse, interestingly on that physical his early posture was noted as good!
seyoung choi said on 5/Dec/20
US politics focus very much on heights, and given trump was able to get his height listed at 6'2, im gonna guess nixon was more like 5'9.5-5'10 max. Also its not clear this was barefoot measurement.
Christian 6'5 3/8 said on 5/Dec/20
Don't get why he was examined as only 5'10" in 1957, compared to 5'10.5" in '43 and '45.
Editor Rob
could have shrunk a fraction? Or just rounded to 5ft 10...
Miss Sandy Cowell said on 5/Dec/20
Oh, brilliant! We have another American President, one whom I knew was a Capricornian who was born in 1913 and who lived to 81. His term of office was from 20/1/1969 up until 1974.
Richard died in hospital on a stroke.
5ft10.5.
RIP Richard Nixon 🕯️

Hmmmmm.....Wiki says 5'11.5. Can't really tell, but he seemed to be in that range which would be a bit above average today (5'11-6'0, essentially).
Jtm said on 5/Dec/20
You finally add him! I always knew 5’11.5 wasn’t right
Johnny 181-182 cm said on 5/Dec/20
Also Rob, since you are adding people from the past can you make a page for Eisenhower? He was also described as 5ft 10.5.
Johnny 181-182 cm said on 5/Dec/20
@Rob where did that 5ft 11.5 figure come from?
Editor Rob
Nixon himself I believe has claimed that figure, and I'm sure some president's have had 'in shoes' measurements before too.
