I'm watching an episode of 'Rising Damp', when Richard had his lovely long hippie hair! I never used to watch it when I was a kid, but when I see it now, I can quite understand why my classmate, Alison, had a thing for him!

Richard's character, Alan, has just been talking to a skeleton and says, "My, you've got a fetching smile. Can I have the pleasure of this dance?"

Then in comes Leonard Rossiter, claiming that he's certifiable!

6ft for this late funny guy, who died long before his time. 🕯️

Ah, what lovely memories this fellow brings back! My Mum wouldn't miss 'Porridge' for the World! She even laughed when a few of the prisoners managed to slip out for a day and came back slightly worse for wear for drinking.....

There was a girl in my class with a massive crush on Richard, but I preferred Ronnie!

I just looked it up, and I am astonished that he died so young. Only 31 years old, and he's the father of Kate Beckinsale, or was.

Would have guessed 5 11 Maybe 6 0 max from what i remember going to check out porridge again with ronnie barker that was a great comedy shame he passed so young he was a talented actor

Why does no-one ever mention his daughter Samantha? She may not be as famous as Kate, but she looked tall enough (and nice enough) to merit a mention here, and she did star in a one-off comedy-drama alongside Brian Conley. It was the only time I thought Conley was funny.

Had a tall lean look. I think 6ft is about right. Had the potential to have become a big star like his daughter but unfortunately died very young. Well loved by the public of the time.

That's incorrect. If he was wearing 2 inch heels, then he would look 6'0.5" or 6'1", not 6'2", since regular shoes have about an inch of heel height.

My money would be on 5'10.5" with shoes taking him to 6'. Hence the 1970's 6' listing.

Yeah 182 is probably the best shout overall. Wore big heels which gave him a 6 ft 1-2 impression at times like in that photo!

Rob, I have studied Richard Beckinsale many times in his tv roles, most notably Porridhe with 5' 7.75" Ronnie Barker. With virtual identical footwear and in very clear full view shots on even ground. Barker reaches Beckinsale's eyebrows. A max advantage of 3.5" and that's been generous. (This is Barker not fully straight either). I would bet a lot of money that Beckinsale was 5'10.5" - 5'11" barefoot. 6ft in shoes with a decent heel. I think if you study him Rob, I think it'd become apparent very quickly. What a great actor though. He actually passed away on my 1st birthday!

Thanks, seems a good shout. In one photo I saw he looked like a 6'1-6'2 guy but had on big heeled boots so I thought 6' range more likely. He had a very distinctive look, but obviously Kate bears no resemblance to him whatsoever!
