I heard this great musical talent mentioned during a Sky Arts programme today and thought, “Although he had his own inimitable style, he influenced all manner of musicians.”
5ft9.

I met Ray Charles in 1978 in Frankfurt at the Jahrhunderthalle, ten years after I met Schwarzenegger. Ray invited my wife and myself backstage to show members of his band a prototype of my Foldaxe folding guitar invention. Ray was very cordial and I still have a photo which I took of him backstage. Ray was the same height as me, about 5'9" without shoes. Roger Field

Looks right. May have been a flat 5'9 at his peak.

I have just started to read a 'Ray Charles biography' and although I am only in the early stages of it they say he was one of the tallest at the 'blind school' and by the age of fourteen he was 5'8" tall. Are you absolutely sure that height is correct? I had always assumed he was taller, though I may be wrong.

Accidentaly posted anominous once by Peppard, but know you know it is me (posted it twice)
Ray was definitely close to five foot nine, maybe even taller, but not five ten, he even had sometimes an amazing good posture for a blind man!
