I’m pleased to have noticed John Entwistle playing bass guitar on Roger Daltrey’s 1977 song ‘Say It Ain’t So’. I saw he was the right height and coupled with his white jacket, (he liked white) there was no mistaking him.

There’s a book written about Franz Listz in ‘Lisztomania’ containing a sketch which looks as though it was drawn by John Entwistle, who drew all the caricatures for ‘The Who By Numbers’.
5ft11.75.

John never gave more than 5ft11, Fenderman, to my recollection.

Pete and John both rounded up their height to 6 feet. Keith probably was an inch or so shorter than 5'8". Did Roger add 2.5 inches? He must have been thinking the Hollywood maxim of subtract two years and add two inches.

Yes, Rob, Pete was very trim. I thought that while watching clips of the Who on the Sky Arts programme.

Thanks Rob!
Yes. that is indeed what Roger put for himself. I don’t think Keith actually put a height because I’d have remembered it! I was interested in height even at 15.

I checked and saw Pete had down 6ft and 10 stones, which is quite trim back in his heyday.

If he was an actor he might claim 6 ft 1 or 2!... Almost exactly the same height and weight as Justin Hawkins, who said he is typically 75kg (165 pounds) recently.

On the Sky Arts Classic Albums programme, Roger Daltrey described Pete and John as two knitting needles and Keith Moon’s drumming as the ‘ball of wool’!
John was also called the ‘LEAD bass guitarist’!

Good find....

Definitely similar height range for Entwistle to Townshend, the latter could look a little lankier in build while Enwistle looked naturally powerful. If these guys were actors they’d probably claim six foot, as it was they were actually among the taller rock stars of their day.

Very nice addition Rob, that’s the one that Sandy requested. It looks like all of the main members of The Who is now complete. Both John Entwistle and Pete Townshend look like at a very similar height and they looked like twins in a way. With Pete Townshend being listed as 5’11.75, I will give John 5’11.5 since Pete edges him by a bit.

I’m so excited to see John Entwistle has at last got a page - THANKS ROB!
Ah! The fabulous late bass and brass player was a big part of my life, being a member of the first band I saw in May 1976 at Charlton Football Ground, a concert which was in the Guinness Book Of Records for many years. I saw the Who’s film ‘Tommy’ 6 times beforehand, even dragging my Mum along to the cinema to see it. She found some of the scenes quite shocking, like the acid scene and when Sally Simpson hurts her face trying to get to Roger Daltrey’s Tommy.
My bedroom was covered in pictures of the Who for many years. and yes, I did find both Pete Townhend and John Entwistle attractive, as well as Roger, daydreaming about them in class! Moony wasn’t dead yet so he’d feature in my fictitious ‘encounters’! 🤔💭🎶👧
At one time onstage, John wore a skeleton suit - because he wanted to grab more camera time, but I was eager to watch all of them in concert. and with any televised ones I see now. the same applies.
John had a deep speaking voice, which he often put to good use on his vocals. Check out the song ‘Boris the Spider’. John was quite open about his hatred of the things! 🕷
He was a keen artist. drawing the characatures of the four band members for their album ‘The Who By Numbers’, which is a beautiful album with deep lyrics penned by Pete.
John had his own band as well called ‘The John Entwistle Band’, and their albums included ‘Smash Your Head Against The Wall’, and ‘Rigor Mortis Sets In’. Charming…..! A compilation album with the word ‘ox’in its title was released after he died in 2002, in his 58th year. I believe it might have been from a heart attack. So tragic, and at such an early age. 🥲
Ha ha! I’m watching last night’s Sky Arts episode on the WHO’s classic albums, which features mainly ‘Who’s Next’, but also shows snippets from their early stuff; I’m laughing slightly because I paused it while John was playing, purely by coincidence!
I’m agreeing with Rob’s figure of 5ft11.5, even though I was under the impression that John was half-an-inch less, as written in one of their early albums, Pete being 6ft and Roger 5ft7. I can’t remember what Keith Moon was though, but 5ft8 seems an accurate guess. Excellent footage can be found in their film ‘Tommy’, particularly in the Eric Clapton/Arthur Brown ‘Preacher Scene’, in which you see John and Pete playing their guitars just behind Eric.
RIP John Entwistle XXX 🕯💐🎶

Yeah John wrote that figure in one of those Q&A sheets back in the early days, I think Daltrey wrote 5ft 7 himself.
