I saw Janet in an episode of Tales of the Unexpected the other day. My word, wasnβt she pretty!

Rob, maybe a fraction under 5β5β peak?
Leigh often struck me as 5β4.5β range in her prime.

That is true, Arch. I noticed the facial resemblance when I saw The Fog at the pictures.
Alfred Hitchcock took full advantage of her femininity, but more so with Tippi Hedren. When she was being attacked by real birds in The Birds, he kept reshooting one of the scenes and Tippi had to go to a psychiatric hospital for a while. I donβt think Jamie Lee would have tolerated that!
Janet gets 5ft4.75.

Maybe a slight resemblance in some of their facial features Sandy like ears, nose and bone structure but I don't think Jamie really looks like either Janet or Tony. Jamie has always been quite masculine and Janet very feminine. I could believe weak 5 ft 5 for Janet.

There looks to be more than a two inch difference between Janet and Jamie Lee Curtis.
R.I.P Janet Leigh.

We did Janet Leigh's write up for her Business Management & her taxes, in the late 90s. She wasn't 5'5'. 5'3.5" at best.

I find that, more often than not, daughters take after their Dads in the facial department, but by no means always.
Years ago, I had a friend called Carol who was 17 years older than me and she had three daughters, one of whom was only 7 months my junior.
All Carol's daughters took after her, which was easy to spot from the pictures I saw of her with the girls, but then one day, purely by coincidence, I met the middle one in a Supermarket. I went up to her and introduced myself, and she was aware of my existence, as she had seen photos of her Mum with me. She was amused that I called her 'Little Carol', but in actual fact, the daughter was only an inch and a bit less than her Mum. The face and hair were amazingly alike, but Carol had slightly darker hair, though they were all blonde.
Jamie looks like her Mum too, but in their case, daughter Jamie exceeds Mum Janet by 2" as far as height goes.
When I saw Janet and Jamie together for the first time in 'The Fog' on the big cinema screen, I didn't need to be told that they were Mum and daughter in real life. It was as plain as the anything-but-plain πs on their faces!

β Hitchcock seemed to have a thing about 5ft5" women with fair hair. That's how Tippi Hedren is described in 'Marnie', and she probably was that height back then.

I was stupefied when I learned that Jamie Lee Curtis was the daughter of Janet Leigh, they don't even share the same surname in Hollywood. A good example of the daughter being taller than the mother. Was she truly 5'5 at peak, or is that her current height? She may have been 5'6 peak.
Sandy Cowell said on 26/Feb/17
The only film that springs to mind with Janet Leigh as a young woman for me is 'Psycho', but I've seen her in the horror flick 'the Fog' with her daughter! 5ft5 is bang on my money for 'Psycho'; I think Hitchcock had a thing about women of that height with blonde hair for his films! Dark hair wouldn't have shown the blood up very well in his black and white films either, but I know he had a genuine liking for the fair of hair and the faint of heart!

Rob can you add the Classic actress tag, I clicked her to try to access that category from the male one. Please consider merging them or creating a quick link in between actors and actresses for convenience!

5'4 and change I think, a little too small at times to be a full 5'5. Very beautiful woman, superb cheekbones, but seemed very prim and proper, quite odd for the womanizing Curtis to be stuck with!

i would guess her to be 5 foot 3 inches.

My sympatheties were with Leigh in that marriage, with Curtis jumping in bed with other girls literally any chance he got, which he admitted later on...I think she was pretty sexy but not in earthy, bawdy way like Gardner, more in the snow-covered way that Hitchcock tended to prefer.
Arch Stanton said on 21/Feb/15
I'm not sure what she was really like, but the vibe I get from her is that she was very straight laced, typical housewife sort of thing and consistent/set in her ways. She looked like she'd be quite a bore to live with, especially for somebody like Tony Curtis!
Arch Stanton said on 21/Feb/15
Yes she definitely had one of the most beautiful faces in Hollywood in the 50s, a striking looking woman but not really "sexy" in the way that Liz Taylor, Ava Gardner and Kim Novak were. Looks about this with the Duke in Jet Pilot.
Sam said on 21/Nov/14
Beautiful woman...Welles actually shot her in a more sexual way than even Hitchcock did IMO as her...uh endowments steal her scenes in Touch of Evil.

Dunno if you can squeeze in Blake Edward's The Perfect Furlough too.

Rob can you add a photo and films like The Manchurian Candidate, Little Women, My Sister Eileen, Scaramouche, The Vikings, Bye Bye Birdie and The Fog.

Remember its hollywood,So they work their magic to make sure there both in frame. Camera angles and lighting can do a lot to fool the viewer.

I'm watching An American Dream with Stuart Whitman. Whitman is listed as 6' and Leigh standing barefoot next to him(he has shoes on) doesn't look more than 3 inches shorter so either he's not 6' or she's taller than 5'5"

Crazy. John Gavin is supposed to be nearly a foot taller yet looks 4 inches taller only in Psycho. Was she on a box next to him? Surely?

I met Janet Leigh in the late Eighties...I'm 5'7"1/2 and towered over her..so either she shrank 3 or 4 inches...or that 5'5" was way off..!
