He looks taller than 5’7 to people because he’s a legitimate 5’7 without shoes. The general public thinks of 5’7 as quite short do to the large amount of 5’5 and 5’6 men claiming to be 5’7. Those heights are noticeably short, at the point of 5’7 that is when someone with good proportions can pull of looking lower average (not particularly short) in the right footwear and with good posture. I think he goes to bed near a flat 5’7 and wakes near 5’7.75, he is like the Tom Hardy of 5’7 guys if that makes sense.

Just been reading some of the comments. 5ft 7in is a far more common male height than some on here seem to realise. According to the height percentile calculator produced by the CDC's 2015-2016 NHANES survey for which many thousands of American adults were measured, 170.2cm (5ft 7in flat) is at the 24th percentile for a male, 171cm is at the 28th percentile and 172cm is at the 32nd percentile.
Interestingly, this survey seems to lend further weight to the claim that average US male height has actually DECREASED slightly in recent years. It found the average male height to be 5ft 9.2in and the average female height to be 5ft 3.6in. Admittedly, this survey was carried out in the USA, but UK height distributions in the population are very similar to those found in the USA.

@ Nik - I find that it helps enormously if I use my cleaning system app before I start writing! A LOT!

I have just recently acquired an enormous interest in this particular James! First I saw him in 'Split' and then just now I've been massively impressed by his winning performance in 'Into the Grizzly Maze' defeating the very clever and resiliant bear, 'Bart'!

I can also watch him in 'Wanted', which awaits me upstairs, and it wouldn't be a bad idea to check out the film 'Atonement' again, as I've only seen it once!

Not that I need to check out James's height any more, because I know him to be a fine 5ft7 figure of a man from the aforementioned film performances, but see them I will because I really like him now, thus proving that being mega-tall is by no means an essential part of being addictively attractive to women...

... well this one anyway! 😜

Peter, for all we know, those guys could be weaker 5'7" range, though. In particular, I could see Kit 5'6.75". Sometimes wears some pretty good boots. Myers and Hamill have worse proportions. Hell, Jeremy Piven is taller than all of them and if you saw them standing by themselves, you'd probably think Piven was the shortest. Most I could give McAvoy is 5'7.25", I'm pretty certain Tom Cruise is taller. I wouldn't rule out an occasional lift, even if primarily for professional reasons. Christoph Waltz is an honest 170 cm I believe and can sometimes look like he measures taller. I think James is similar.

Arch and Rising, I'd bet my honor as a celebheights user that Mcavoy, when measured would come closer to 5'7.5 than just 5'7. He can easily look 5'7.5 and never appears 5'6 range. Guys who are actually 5'7 flat, like Kit Harington, Mike Myers, Mark Hamill, never give off more than a "below average range", James can look simply average. He's 5'7" like he said. No more since he wouldn't have he's shorter than he is, but I doubt he could be much less either. You could argue he might not want to include a quarter inch and rounded, but once you get to 5'7.5", 9 times out of 10 people will say 5'8" if they round. He looks taller for the same reason Joaquin Phoenix, Jamie Foxx, Tom Hardy, Jude Law and Guy Pearce do. Men under 6 feet who are honest about it stand out, especially in Hollywood. And I also share Rob's suspicion that he sometimes has something in his shoes. Or when he doesn't, he does often have a bit thicker style shoe or boot.

Just re watched wanted he held up ok with the innumerable amount of average over billers.
That movie is the tallest he ever looks I know of maybe 5 7 .5 but still a small man with excellent acting ability.

On many sites McAvoy is listed as 166 cm but I doubt he is only 166 cm, I think he might be a little over 5'7... I'm actually 172 cm, in some occasions I wear elevator shoes and can reach 177/178 cm. Here in this picture he's wearing elevator shoes too since Keira's 5'7 + heels as a consequence he must have wore those shoes to compensate in height... a part from that, I think it is not deprecable to wear elevator shoes, everyone does so, even in sport.

Rob by looking at his pics i have realized something, he is not an ectomorph but a very thin mesomorph. Tobey Maguire and Sean Penn (similar height range) are ectomorphs. Tom Cruise, Robert Downey Jr., Zac Efron, Hunter Parrish, Stephen Dorff, Wahlberg, Joaquin, Willem Dafoe are all lean mesomorphs. These guys are able to put on mass, whereas Tobey cannot do it easily. I realize that cause i was an overweight mesomorph, now average mesomorph.

Rob i don't think even you are an an ectomorph, you are a lean mesomorph. Could u answer that ? I am kind of curious ? I went to a doctor he checked my bone structure and my thumb reached my mid-finger over my wrists, also he checked my bone mass and bone span. He concluded i am an broad-shouldered mesomorph of a predicted height between 5'7 to 5'10 type height dependent bone structure, i am 5'7.5 so he was close.

Most of the times he looks 5'7.25 but in Filth it almost looked as if Jamie Bell was 2 inches taller than him or something in fact Bell is atleast 1/2 inch shorter than this guy , 5'6.75 for Bell , 5'7 or 5'7.25 for James McAvoy.

A lot of the time its film fans who get them changed. Rob put the actress Susan Strasberg on here at just over 5ft. On the 'filmsite' they had her at 5ft 5 1/2!! so I sent them an email and said look at photo's of her with Marilyn Monroe and she was 5 inches shorter, they must have and changed it the next day

Gary: He ain't taller. Trust me. Thats what a well proportioned 5'7" guy looks like. Compare him to Jonah Hill who is completely unporportional and maybe half inch smaller than James. Jonah has a tiny head, a huge square upper body and extremely short legs. He looks terribly short wherever I see him in pictures by himself . Even slimming down didn't help him. After seeing X-Men: First Class, I think James McAvoy is under 5'7.'' Jennifer Lawrence and Lucas Till (who are both close to 5'8'') had a couple of inches on him. Overall, Mr. McAvoy is probably 5'6'' tops.

I agree with the previous poster. 154 lbs for an individual who stands 5'7" is by no means 'skinny'. I have a friend who stands a little under 5'7" and weighs 160 lbs and is an avid weight lifter. If you want truly skinny, look at Shia LeBouf. I think he mentioned he weighed around 130 lbs despite being nearly 5'10". Now that's skinny!

I would not call a 5ft7/154 lbs guy skinny, with that weight you look athletic/slim, but not skinny. I'm 5ft8 and during my adulthood my weight has ranged from 134-185 lbs. When I was 134 lbs I did too much cardio etc and on the contrary when I was 185 lbs I was eating like hell and pumping iron with heavy weights. At least for my body type the ideal weight in top shape is around 160lbs...

As for his height, I agree, he seems like an honest person and I believe he is a 5'7 (maybe quarter or a hald inch taller, and in morning)... plus, what kind of sane person would lower his own height... unless ofc. that person is extremely high...
If he is 5'7.5... it's possible that he doesn't really care about his height, or at least he doesn't care about a half inch taller, or smaller, thus saying 5'7 (i.e. can't be arrsed saying 5'7.5)
