James Caan's Height
5ft 9 ½ (176.5 cm)
American actor, best remembered for roles in films such as Misery, El Dorado, Brian's Song, The Godfather, The Gambler, Rollerball, Thief, Alien Nation, Bottle Rocket and Elf. On TV he starred in Las Vegas. In a 1973 publication it mentioned Jim "being just a shade over five feet ten and weighing a mere 162 pounds". He also mentioned in an AVClub article that for El Derado and working with guys like Mitchum/Wayne "I immediately went and got three-inch lifts in my cowboy boots so I could stand next to those guys". In 1972 he claimed "I'm about 6 [feet]" although in 2000 said "I'm only 5 feet 10".

James Caan was a rising star in more ways than one: The 5'10" actor wore three-inch lifts in his boots so as not to be dwarfed by larger actors Mitchum and Wayne.
Mitchum good-naturedly accused the 6'4" Wayne of wearing lifts himself to stand even taller than the rest of the cast.

I saw James’s film ‘Thief’ recently. The music is by Tangerine Dream and was the first of the band’s albums I bought at the age of 20. The best two tracks are saved to the end of the film, entitled ‘Beach Theme’ and ‘Beach Scene’. I’ve never bought an album by German band Tangerine Dream and found it to be lousy! 💿😊👍🏼

His 6 foot claim ranks up there as one of the worst height lies on this site. He was a weak 5-9 peak and I'm sure under in '22. There are some golf shoes shots where he looks way under 6 foot. Lift guy for decades. He hung out with real made guys for decades so he could run the mobster lines with cred.

I'd say Burton was closest to 5'9.75", the other two looked 5'9.25" too often.

RIP, he was a badass icon. Occasionally honest about height and brutally honest about a lot else, he could’ve believably woken up a strong 5’10” and change, even as much as 5’10.5” is believable.

I’m watching Rollerball. Caan is slightly taller than Sir Ralph Richardson who in his prime was six feet. In 1977 Richardson was around 74 so he might have lost an inch.

No, I don't have the vaguest idea whether Kathy Bates actually lifted him, and I very much doubt that she would have done; I guess that the filmmakers wouldn't wish to put the health and wellbeing of their actors in jeopardy for any reason whatsoever. The lifting scene did have the desired effect though. Kathy Bates isn't exactly the tallest of women, but when you see that scene, you can't help but think that she's immensely strong for a 5ft3" female! Did you enjoy her performances in American Horror Story? I felt she was great in that, and equally so in Dolores Claiborne, wherein she played a victim rather than an evil old witch!

Happy 81st birthday to James Caan! Looked 5'9 to 5'10 in Godfather 1 and 2. That being said, he did look significantly taller than that at certain times, perhaps 6'0 or a little taller. Maybe he wore lifts? Not sure, but he gave a great performance.

It could have been a 6'1 African American guy carrying James - or carrying anybody else and nobody would be able to tell from how that scene was filmed. The scene cuts to Caan bloodied in the car, someone forcing the car door open, you can see Annies/maybe Kathy's hands, that's about it. You can't see her or his face and even if you could, that still wouldn't mean that Kathy Bates is actually carrying James Caan.

I think Caan looks almost 6 feet in The Godfather but I really believe he wore giant lifts in that blockbuster. 5’9.5” is a rather unarguable listing for Caan’s peak but these days Robert Duvall looks taller than Caan. I think Duvall has kept his height better over the years than Caan.

Ergo someone’s estimation of his height must be off because, even though he has aged, I don’t believe that he has shrunk 8”.

James Caan always came across as a tall man in his roles. I am very surprised that he is only 5 feet 9 or so. He never made it to leading man status. This might be why his career was oddly low key.

Actually, James admission that he decided to get lifts himself because of his tall co-stars shows he may be height conscious. He did often wear the typical large heeled footwear of the day back in the 70s. Makes me wonder about the "shade" over 5'10" description since it's oddly specific, but it seems too much for a barefoot height. I do think Caan could have lost as much as 1.5", but Rob isn't just going to downgrade people purely based on an average. The average man loses 1" by age 65, yet Rob's own father was still at his peak height at 65. Rob also met Billy Dee Williams at the same age James Caan is now, yet concluded he was still 5'10.25", despite the fact Billy was never any taller than 5'11" even at his peak.

I actually have to agree with 5'9.5" peak. He looked to have at least about an inch or so on Brando in the Godfather during the full shot during the wedding scene and Brando and Brando typically looked about 5'8.5" to me.

It certainly could help figure out the most he could have been at his peak comparing Caan to Mitchum in that film. I remember a funny story posted on one of the pages here about Brando getting lifts when he heard Caan did, but I can't find it right now.

Caan's height has been reducing for 3 decades now. That is 1.5" of height loss. Subtract 1.5" from 69.5" and you end up with the most likely height for Jimmy ... 68.0" or 5'8"! My 5'8.5" is not only extremely close, but I'm still allowing him .5" less shrinkage for a man his age. Chances are he is 5'8".
One thing that I forgot is that Sugar Ray has lost a little height as well. He is about 54 now. That means, if he was 5'8.5" peak, he is now very close to 5'8"

My 5'8.5" is not only extremely close, but I'm still allowing him .5" less shrinkage for a man his age. Chances are he is 5'8".
One thing that I forgot is that Sugar Ray has lost a little height as well. He is about 54 now. That means, if he was 5'8.5" peak, he is now very close to 5'8"

I can confirm Billy Dee is 5' 10" a few years ago at Ray Courts' show. Caan I saw running through Caesars Palace and he's nowhere near 5' 10". Sly obviously gets the giant customs over Billy Dee, he was the star.

Stood 5' from him many yrs. ago in Cape May NJ...he was with who I assumed were his parents. or an elderly couple ...could have been around 1976 or so...I'm 5'6"....he certainly looked 5'10" in sneakers....didn't have the courage to ask for an autograph...he looked so relaxed.

I'd put him at no more than 5'7.5".I think actors don't care so much about their heights as they get older and find it uncomfortable to wear their lifts.People really don't shrink that much as they get older.
