He was definitely, without a doubt, 5'11 3/4", or 6'0" even. This picture of him being measured when he was drafted into the army is 100% proof of that. (Top of the line, 6'0", bottom of the line, 5'11". Weird I know.) So he's basically 6'0" either way.

I’m watching a programme on Sky Arts about Elvis Presley, and I’m enjoying it far more than I expected I would. John Lennon said ‘Before Elvis, there was nothing’, and I’m beginning to understand him now.

I remember the day he died, which was the 16th August, 1977. They were playing Elvis’s music non-stop and I couldn’t work out why. Then the news came on, declaring ‘The King is Dead’ and I felt very upset.

I read all about Elvis in the newspapers and I liked him even more. He had the wherewithal to chuck a bottle through a TV screen if he didn’t like a programme! I’d get through a fair few of those, as long as I wasn’t watching Sky Arts!

I believe Gladys Presley was listed as 5'7" in Elvis and Gladys book. Vernon was said to be about an inch taller than Elvis. It makes sense that Elvis wasn't taller as his potential given his very poor upbringing and likely poor nutrition. My grandfather was 6'1" and my grandmother was 5'8" but my father was the smallest of the boys, 5'11 3/4". However, despite this, my brother grew to 6'2" while my mom was only 5'4". Nutrition matters too, my father grew up with not a lot of meat growing up.

A strong 5'11 for the king of rock and roll, I think he could pass for a 6 footer guy by just wearing normal shoes or peak morning height. I know someone who is near the same height as 5'3 Priscilla Presley but maybe that is in her nikes. His dad looks 6 ft 1 in some photos but others looks a similar height if not a bit shorter than Elvis. Looked nothing like his dad, only the quiffed hair type I can see it a bit, didn't look that much like his round faced mother either, though I can see a little of a resemblance around the eyes and nose, and probably where he got the chubby gene from. You would certainly never look at the parents and think their son was a super star.

Is the back of the feet against base plate the standard way in your eyes with back to the wall Rob and has it always been in your eyes?

Because I think from experience (although I haven't tested this since I was about 16, 35 years ago) that having your feet slightly away from the wall, say by 2 to 3 cm, in the back to the wall position, gives you more height. This is basically because everyone has a bum, and it causes forward rotation (lean) unless your hips are set up right (hamstring / psoas / quad / ab / Lower back ratios). On the other hand facing front you have more space, due to the forefoot distance and an obvious optimum could be between 2 and 10 based on your two measurements and my observation; 2-10 is less than anyone's forefoot.

But my question is if back to the wall, which as you said is more common, why should our heels touch the wall, as it's not optimal? It should be whatever position is comfortable in order to straighten the legs and back and get the best height, no? In other words I'm suggesting that measuring in the middle of the day is one thing, but anything reduces height even further actually seems to be non - standard in that everyone has a different hip body structure - and foot length. Maybe we should measure any way that gives the best height (without visibly leaning back or tilting head), otherwise our foot and hip proportions interfere.

He probably walked around at a legit 5'11" barefoot during the day. Might have measured 5'11.5" early in the morning. I don't see him having been as tall as 6'0" let alone 6'0.5" or the ridiculous self-proclaimed 6'1.5". 5'11" in 2-2.5" high heeled shoes can make him look like a tall man (might have even reached 6'1.5" at some points), especially in his leaner days.

I’m a limo driver and somewhat of a height expert and my favorite source to gauge Elvis Presley’s true height was the time he sang on Frank Sinatra’s show as a duet. Frank was 5’7” and Elvis looked three to four inches taller and mostly due to his hair. When I drove Priscilla Presley in California I asked her straight out and she was so sweet and kind and said he usually wore lifts and that he was not too tall, maybe 5’10”. And there you have it. Elvis was actually 5’10” but wore all sorts of lifts that made him anywhere from 2-4 inches taller to look anywhere from 6’ to 6’2”

Actually Elvis was 5’10” and this source came from a book I once read about two investigators who went to his death scene. Elvis wore lifts that ranged from 2 to 4 inches and if you see his pictures his height is never consistent. Look at him next to his body guard Red West, in some photos Red is taller than Elvis and in others Elvis is towering over Red who was 6 feet tall

In the book, "Baby, Let's Play House" by Alanna Nash, the author recounts an incident when Elvis got into a fight with another man, mentioning that "Elvis, who stood six feet only with the help of lifts in his shoes, hauled off and punched the six-foot-three [Edd] Hopper, giving him a black eye".

Keep in mind, Nixon was 57 in 1970(year of meeting with Elvis), and his 70" height was taken in 1957. I wouldn't be surprised if Nixon was 69.5" when he met Elvis. At times, I think EP looked 5'11...but there are times he looks 5'10.5.

Now personally, I think what we have Elvis at currently is fine (still think 6ft isn't unrealistic either) and from there he easily cleared 6ft1 in boots, more likely at least 6ft2 (those shoes he wore were massive). Vernon on the other hand I think could have been that barefoot. Elvis for his time would be branded as tall...but potentially with a 5ft7 mother and 6ft2 father I think he could have ended up much taller...

he was measured 184 in boots. there is a photo of it somehewere on this site. the boots gave him probably 3 cm maybe 3,5 but lets say 3. that means that he was 181 cm tall. he could have been 182 but i dont think the boots only gave 2 cm and he could have been brad pitts height of 180,5 if they gave 3,5. i think almost 181 is best guess. i have never had any boots that given less than 2,5-3 cm.

Between his 6'0.5" measurement in boots, the 5'11.5" figure from the costume designer and the one 5'11" in his medical records, I'd say 5'11.5" max or somewhere around 181 cm range. There wasn't much more than 2" between Elvis and Charles Bronson in Kid Galahad and Bronson was not only not above 5'9", but also wearing flat boxing shoes.

With the exception of a few tracks, I was never a massive fan of his music, but I read all about him in the extensive newspaper coverage after he died and reckoned I'd have liked to know him. He sounded full of fun, but the sad truth of the matter is that his drug use had spiralled out of control, messing with his behaviour. 😌

There seems to be a plethora of people posting who met or knew famous celebrities. I tend to believe 90% of it is BS. I think Elvis was a strong 5-11. But to look taller than all the male actors he appeared with in later features he wore built-up shoes. But early on he didn’t so that’s the best time period to judge his actual height.

I watched a Steve Allen program Elvis appeared on. Allen was reportedly 6’3’’. Elvis looked four to five inches shorter. He was no more than 5’11’’. In his later movies he wore boots with large heels and they were probably built up to give him at least two more inches in height.

I once worked with a wardrobe lady at NBC Burbank Studios, in Los Angeles in early 2000, and had an interesting talk with her about Elvis. She had just seen a rerun of the TV series, "Sledge Hammer" where I once played Elvis as an actor. We then chatted about Elvis, and she said she had once been in charge of Elvis's wardrobe on his "1968 TV special", and was quite taken by his modesty and concern for others. She also mentioned he was 6'0" even and weighed 170 lbs, and was rather easy to fit. She then said she was rather nervous as she was new at her job, but Elvis went out of his way to put her at ease and make her feel comfortable.

The young Elvis had a pompadour that was at least two inches higher than his scalp; it's as if he had been wearing a shako. So how exactly do we consider hair in assigning anyone's height? Hair is organic material, and intrinsic to the bodies of the people from which it grows. You can grow it longer and pile it on top of your head, or cut it off. Natural baldness can cause it to fall out. It can be suppressed by pushing it down, or flattened by moisture. what is the standard regarding hair here at Celebrity Heights?

Very few famous people have their heights that repeatedly measured as Elvis. We know even about minute by minute circumstances of these measurements (those in the army). His army records mostly put him at 6 feet tall. In the only one that states less than 6 feet (probably not rounded) we know he didn't go to sleep the entire night before,so he lost quite height for sure. And that's not speculation, that day, as many others, was scrutinize and published minute by minute. Nobody has same height in all circumstances. If Elvis is not a 6 footer, then every single person around 6 feet should not be considered 6 footer.

I never met Elvis, but I did play him as an actor on the TV series "Sledge Hammer". (a spoof of Clint Eastwood's Dirty Harry films). Over the years I've had many people who knew him come up to me and comment on how I am about his size(I am 6'1"). But they also state that Elvis was very modest about his height, and said at times he was 5'11 3/4" and at other times stated he was 6'0" even. Actually he might never have been measured at his peak height in the morning, and didn't know he was a true 6'0".

Any chance of a more 5’11-511.5 listing rob? He was measured as 71 inches and 185 lbs in the military. If you see pictures of him barefoot he really strikes me as a 5’11 man but a very strong 5’11 man. He’s got the proprortions of someone a bit taller. Plus his big hair. His mugshot although fake clearly lists him at about 5’10 but that was in his later years after peak height. 5’11 for Elvis, could be the weakest 6 footer in the world. 5’10 as he got older. Real story.

People I meet and have met have always confidently asked (me) whether I am 6 foot as if I cannot be any less.

A girl (5'3" herself) in the past thought I was 6'3" barefoot (when I was skinnier) and a guy who was 6'2" himself thought I was at least 5'11" 1/2 if not 6 foot.

The last time I measured myself, back in 2016, I was 179 cm in the morning. With shoes, I am around 5'11" 1/2 and if you add the hair on my head, I am 6 foot indeed.

My chest is 44" and I am overweight (96 kilograms). I have broad shoulders but short legs.

You can also see online his draft card from 1953 ( before real fame) and his height is precisely listed as 5ft 11 and a half , and weight as 150lbs. He was a tall lanky kid. You can’t use the excuse that he was famous when he had this measurement taken, he was a kid and whoever took the measurement didn’t obviously round it up or down. The only odd thing is that it mentions his eyes as being green, however , Elvis has been listed as having green eyes before.
He was certainly taller than 5ft 10 ins and in my opinion he continued to grow up to 6ft once he reached full maturity.

I have good reasons to believe Elvis A. Presley was around 5'10" (maximum 5'10.5" out of bed) and not a single cm / inch above that.

The reason why it is so hard to believe that Elvis was not a 6 footer is because:

1) he always wore lifts even at places where everyone else was barefoot (such as the Karate scene) to cover his actual height,

2) the fact that he was, if not the best then, one of the looking men in the history of mankind, and

3) some of us have this preconceived notion that majority of the good looking men are at least 6 foot or above, which is actually wrong.

Moreover, the fact that Elvis was larger than life, the angles at which his photos were taken (which does tend to give one an illusion of the subject's height in relation to the others standing beside him / her), his wide chest which is proportionate to a 6 footer, inter alia, makes it difficult to refute that Elvis was anything below 6 foot.

You can continue to share videos and pictures as evidence that corroborate what you all have to say here, but the truth is, Elvis was blessed with the life he had, but regardless, he was very conscious of his then slightly above average height (which majority of you will laugh it off or find it difficult to accept).

Furthermore, in the only mugshot taken of Elvis Presley, if you can stick a ruler across his head (on your computer screen) exactly from where his hairline starts, you will be surprised with the result.

I know I have been generous when I put him in the 5'10" / 5'10.5" category.

Moreover, what makes it so difficult to take a different viewpoint here is because his height has been billed above 6 foot everywhere, so it is very difficult to bargain / refute / debate for the actual height (which was much less) because no one will now settle for the actual price (i.e., the height) being offered a higher price already.

Needless to say, all these height measurements taken at the army, during issuance of his driver's license, etc., does not matter because he was as giant as the universe for some, not a star, and no one would want their universe, who, I repeat, as large as Elvis, to be below 6 foot.

As one fan had said, he thought Elvis was over 7 foot with an aura around his head, but when they met, it was nothing like that.

Elvis was just around 5ft 11 180cm during his years before his death.... If Elvis was not dead and still alive as today as a grandpa in 80s, I would've guessed him around 5ft 9 as 2019 height cause people do loose height when they become older...

To me, Elvis seems to be about 5’10” during his pre army days. Then he’s listed as 5’11” in the army. In later years in the 70s Elvis always seemed taller, at least 6” on stage with those jumpsuits. Is it possible he grew an inch or two after the army? I just read a book by his old girlfriend Linda Thompson who claims he was 6’1”.

The fact Bronson has flat boxing shoes there is important. There are a few roles where I can see the 5'8" range guesses for Bronson, but what sealed 5'9" for me is how he looked throughout his 60's along with Michael Winner confirming it and the full photo of an aged Bronson and Winner lending more credence to that. But Elvis still looks just a good 2" taller or 5-5.5 cm making him a solid 5'11". There does seem to be a decent possibility Elvis wore lifts at times. Actually, there's more evidence of it than Bronson wearing lifts!

@Rampage: Someone can correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe that's B.B. King with Elvis and Billy Ward with Elvis in the second.

I'm kind of surprised he slipped up saying "everyone in the business knew" more than once implying he was in the entertainment industry himself, much like someone else. On a side note, not EVERYONE in the business knew as Michael Winner was as close to Bronson as anyone in the business. Also, the references to his wife remind me a lot of Frank2. Well, him or Lieutenant Columbo and I think we can rule out Columbo. ;) No comment on the possibility of a 5'6" Bronson, but a 5'7" Bronson would have needed to borrow Burt Reynolds' boots on a regular basis while somehow disguising them far better than Burt ever did. I'll give "Tom" credit for revising his Elvis estimate from 5'10" to 5'11", though.

I'd bet he woke up at 6' flat and fell into a strong 5'11" range by afternoon. I personally wouldn't have listed him any taller than 5'11.5". 180-181 cm would be his low range, imo. I will say he could look to have a solid 4" on Sinatra, but only looked about 2" taller than Bronson in "Kid Galahad".

Hi to all that have posted and will continue to post! My Brother is a ETA(Elvis Tribute Artisit) He gets his outfits from the same people at BK who are associated with those who have made elvis's Jumpsuits. Plus my brother met co stars from Elvis films as well as stood right next to Dj Fontana and Joe Esposito in a photo op. My brother is the same height as DJ fontana and he is wearing regular heels and is at least 5 inches taller than Joe Esposito. Elvis standing next to DJ is also the same height. My Brother is 5'10'' flat footed and six with boots( Elvis replica white boots 2" heels).
The co stars my brother met have Elvis somewhat the same height as my brother or just a smidge shorter. Further more I met and interviewed superfoot wallace who is in the Karate documentary film that never was released but the footage is available on youtube. I am just under 5'10" with my shoes on and i have superfoot by 2 inches and he is flat foot. In the karate film Elvis wears boots and also is flatfooted. When he doesn't have the boots on he has superfoot only by 2inches with the boots on about 4 inches.. With those boots a definite 6 footer without. a solid 5'10"s

@Someone: I didn't know that about his DL, but I agree 5'11.5" seems pretty likely. It'd make sense with him claiming 6'1.5" on stage in the 70's(he presumably meant in his stage costume and heeled boots) and the apparent 6'0.5" measurement in army boots since they probably added at least an inch. Anything under 5'11" is too low, imo, but it doesn't seem like he was closer to 6' than 5'11" either, especially in the 50's and early 60's.

The actress is Joan Blackman and she is listed at 168 or 5'6 1/8 here: Click Here. Besides, just look at her, 90% of women are under 170cm and when they are above it, you can tell from a mile away, I myself might have guessed 5'5ish by her proportions. I see no more than 5 inches between them, but look at the ground. Elvis has the high ground which is giving him at least a 1/2 inch maybe 1 full inch making him between 4-4 1/2 inches taller than her MAX.

For me, this is bulletproof evidence that he is around 179-180 because he and her are barefoot and she is an actress with an actual listed height, not hearsay or " I met so and so 40 years ago."

What about the famous mugshot from the 70's where his hair didn't even reach the 6ft mark. My hair gives me between 3-4cm. So at 5'9, with 1.5" lifts and my hair, I end up close to 6'1 or 5'11ish with hair slicked back.

Thanks for your comments DanThe Guy, obviously I will always be in the 6ft camp as no one on this site has provided credible evidence to the contrary. After being interested in Elvis’ height for decades and having met his friends, seen official documentation which cannot be disproved by simply casually dismissing them, and seeing him with other 6ft males the evidence to me is overwhelming .
It is amusing when someone just disregards something which adds credibility to Elvis’ 6ft height simply by saying things such as” well they always exaggerate their heights” This isn’t good enough for me to change my mind- prove it!
I don’t think though that there will be any further evidence for us to look at now as it seems that everything has been released. But even we had that last measurement from the autopsy, which wasn’t taken or recorded, that still would have been dismissed either way for all types of probable reasons. So we will just have to go with our own thoughts, but i think it’s fair to say that Elvis stood around 6 ft tall!

Hi DanTheGuy, I won’t keep going on about this as I have mentioned numerous times before on here but having met Ed Parker I can say that he was 6ft tall , and in the martial arts world he was as big as Elvis in his day. So I can’t I’m afraid believe anything other than that height for Elvis, who in barefeet was the same height, if not a fraction taller that Ed. The famous picture of Ali is not full length and there is some suggestion that Ali raised himself up onto his top toes, just messing around when it was taken. If you google Vernon Presley and Ali you will notice that standing next to each other that there isn’t much in it, and then compare the photo I have posted of Elvis in his karate gi, barefooted next to his dad.

Take it to photoshop and rotate it. Elvis had no more 2 inches on Linda Thompson (if his posture was better, barely an inch with that posture though) who claims 5'9. She also claimed Elvis was 6ft 1!?! Vernon had on socks, not shoes and had 3-3.5 inches on Elvis. If Linda was truly 5'9 which i find highly unlikely because most of google listing are way higher than actual height for actresses, and Vernon was really 6'2 which he didnt look it, maybe 6'1, that would make elvis right at 5'11 and no more, which is still quite tall, especially with boots on ;-P. That is of course "if" that 5'9 and 6'2 were true.

@Mike2 I am 5'9 but didn't know it until I was in my 20's, know why? Because my father is 5'6.75 but always said 5'9, my grandfather said 6'1-ish but was only 5'11. All women around me claimed heel heights. Because of all of that, I truly thought I was 5'11 until a physical I had revealed I was indeed only 5'9. What I'm saying is that you're only as tall (number-wise) as the other people's claims around you. To my family, I am still 5'10.5 - 5'11, but to the rest of the world, my 5'9 ends up being around 5'10.

While I would love to make comparisons to people he is barefooted with, this site did not exist 60 years ago to refute height claims of those who were less than "stars" at the time. The only thing I can do is compare pictures and heights of people who are listed on this site and make my inference based on those photographs. The evidence of Elvis, particularly in the 50's, shows me that he was obviously no less than 5'10, but not within a 1/4 of an inch of 5'11. The proof to me are the appearances on Milton Berle, with Charles Bronson, Pat Boone, and Glen Campbell, (who Rob had listed at 5'10.5 until I posted a picture of him with Elvis, and upgraded him a full 1.5" to an even 6ft instead of downgrading the mega star Elvis Presley).

As a lift wearer myself (yes, I started wearing lifts because the measured height really messed with my head after thinking I was slightly above average), I can spot them and the height variances a mile away. Not to mention the footwear choices. I went from wearing 3/4'' tennis shoes to wearing 1.5'' basketball shoes and formal shoes with a 1 inch lift inside. I threw out any shoes that couldn't hold that extra 1 inch. To me, it appears that Elvis did the same in the early 60's. The last thing I look for in a persons height is their overall mass. Looking at the 50's photographs, he doesn't look anywhere near as "massive" as a genuine bare-foot 6 footer. In fact, his build looks exactly the same as mine at 5'9, however, I do have relatively wide shoulders for a man of my height, wider than the above picture of Mr. Presley. If you look at a man who is 172 cm but built like a model vs a guy built like a telephone pole, the model looks average height and the light pole looks like a shadow of a man. As Elvis aged, his build (like most) got bigger and more robust.

On a semi side note. My drivers license (still) says 5'11 and even though I wear lifts, no one has ever once refuted those claims or suggested that I was less than that, even on the beach. This tells me that the average Joe (and Jane) are mistakenly guessing their height and the heights of other by at least a full inch.

All of my previous statements about Elvis' height are based off of what I call 50's Elvis. Though it is wildly unlikely, I'm not throwing out the possibility that he grew an inch after 22/23 y.o., I'm just saying that he was already one of the luckiest men in the world, how much more luck could one have? The only way to know for certain would have been by tape measure and that obviously wont happen. Other listed celebrity heights are our best bet, here's another one.

That is Muhammad Ali who Rob as well as the average guess section have pegged at 6'2.5. He has at least 4 full inches on 1970's boot (not cowboy) wearing Elvis. That would put Mr. Presley at my estimated 5'10.5-.75. I have a picture of myself with a friend who's 6'1 and it looks just like the one with Ali. Remember, I'm only 5'9 and that picture was before my lift wearing days.

If a 5'10 1/2-3/4 man wore my shoes, he would be 6'1-6'1.25. That would make him the same height as a 6ft man in 1 inch shoes. Men who are 6 foot usually claim 6'1 and 6 foot claims go on down to 5'10.5 in some cases or 5'9.5 in Harry Styles case.

P.S. By no means am I discrediting yours, Robs, or anyone else's guess. There is a substantial arguement for 5'11.5-6ft too. I'm just trying to dig a tad deeper because of what happened to me, I'm a little more skeptical of claims and lifts than most.

People do seem occupied with lifts etc, but when you have a barefooted Elvis you can ignore all that.
My photos show Elvis with other 6 ft plus other males ( his Dad who was 6ft 1in - 6ft 2ins, and 6ft Ed Parker) from these you can clearly see that Elvis was indeed a six foot male too.

Watch this lesser seen video with Uncle Milty. In a lot of the scenes, Milton surprisingly appears a 1/4'' taller than Elvis. In one scene, Milton's shoes are shown and there is no way he could have had lifts in them. Unless Elvis somehow grew 2 inches in his 20's, the only way he would have hit 6 ft was with his boots on.

On a side note, 99% of men are done growing by 20 and those who do continue to grow, gain on average, less than 1/2''. The only other cases are those who have some extremely rare spinal diseases who continue to grow until a premature death. This would mean that if Elvis did grow beyond the obvious 5'10 that he was here, that unless he was even luckier than the luckiest man in the world, which many saw him as, he would have only ended up at 5'10.5.

Draw a line that is at 5'10 and a half, then add 1 inch for hair and another 2 inches for boots. That would put your mark at 6'1 and a half. Then look at it from about 2-5 feet back. Wouldn't you think that person was at least 6 foot. That is the case with Elvis and most sub 6 ft celebrities. Throw in the larger than life factor and you've got a plethora of height boosting factors.

I seem to remember an interview early in his career where he mentions that people often say something like "I thought you were taller" or "you're shorter than I thought", I'm paraphrasing of course. I think a lot of celebrities get this and turn to lifts and or boots to help reduce such occurrences.

He looked about a 1/2 inch taller than 5'10 Milton Berle in Michael Jackson-esque shoes. Just before he was drafted, he started wearing boots and continued to do so for the rest of his career. Any height of lift can fit in boots because they are so high up the ankle and will still provide foot support.

I'd give him 5'11 1/8 out of bed. Right at 5'11 for a small part of the day. 5'10 3/4 around dinner. 5'10 5/8 after a long nighttime concert. These are all barefoot estimates. 6'1 is probable in boots.

Such big stars give off a larger than life appearance, in aura and height.

If the point of the guess option is to pick their compressed height, I'll give 5'10 3/4''. He just didn't look that tall in the 50's

Strong 5'11" is obviously more realistic. The height listed above was most likely his morning height. Bronson was 5'9", and you're right about the flat footwear. The ONLY way Bronson could be a 5'7" guy there is if he's somehow managed to hide 3" lifts in his shoes. Anybody who understands how lifts work can conclude that that's clearly impossible!

I do wonder if Bronson wore lifts in Kid Galahad...Elvis might have been more a stronger 5'11" than a weak 6'...5'11.5" would be the perfect listing for him, imo. It's the most reasonable to me as he could look anywhere between 180-183 cm. Either way, a desirable height and talented singer/actor with a great physical build (during his prime).

Forgot to add...some of the taller measurements on his army medicals may have been taken early morning, hence the varied heights. 6'0.5" - almost certainly measured with boots on, 5'11" - arguably shoeless in the afternoon or evening. Height above easily could've been his outta bed height.

Nixon was 5'11, look at the pic of them next to each other, he was just a little bit taller than Nixon. Elvis costumes would fit me I have a similar build to his but I have a 11.5 shoe. With shoes he most likely hit 6'1. BTW I have 42 chest and have hit the six foot mark without shoes if I don't slouch.

Elvis wasn’t as tall as 6’ but I can’t tell you his real height, as no one other than him will really know. But his costume designer Bill Belew said in an interview that Elvis always wore a size 9 (US) shoe so that solves that. No idea why it says on google that Elvis was a size 11. His personal costume designer stated he was a size 9, what more proof do we need?

I never met Elvis ,but I did play him, as an actor, on the TV series "Sledge Hammer". (a spoof of Clint Eastwood's Dirty Harry films).Over the years I've had many people comment on how similar I am in size and height to Elvis.(I am 6'1")Many of these people have told me that they knew Elvis, and he appeared to be just a shade over 6 feet. I'd say judging from this, Elvis was about 6'1/4", and also, a fine actor.

I think you have asked me this before? Anyway, after Aloha from Hawaii Elvis played Vegas straight away, and then continued to tour the US, as well as playing Vegas twice a year until 1976.
In 1976 he played Vegas once only and this was his final time there, however he continued to tour the large arenas. He was still very popular and was one of the biggest concert artists, certainly up there with other big acts, such as the Stones and Led Zep.
Really he was touring too much and this showed in some of his shows, but he could still pull off great ones. Check out on YouTube Birmingham in Dec 76 to get an idea. The film quality is poor but you can still see that Elvis was in great shape and was still capable of putting on a great show.
I have just recently read Linda Thompson’s book, and she claims that Elvis was 6ft 1in tall !!

5'11" is a possibility, considering he didn’t look a lot taller than Charles Bronson in Kid Galahad...Bronson was between 5'8.5"-5'9". I have to admit, I didn’t see a 3 inch difference between them. Overall, 5'11.5" (give or take a half inch) can be argued imo, definitely no less than a solid 5'11" though!

I personally wouldn’t put him above 5'11.5" myself because of his costume designer’s stated measurements. Was it an under measurement? I’d say highly unlikely...

When an insanely famous man from the (historically) recent past is of slightly above average but not distinctive or remarkably memorable height the guessing game on his true size takes on a life of its own. From pictures of the time and accounts I've read, Elvis seemed to be probably a slim but solid 6' tall man at his peak height as a young man (maybe another inch for his famous hair) and probably held close to that throughout most of his life. He might've shrunk slightly near the end of his life with all of the weight he put on and the rough shape he was in but even then he likely didn't go much below 5'11" without shoes. He was not a small person. Not massive but solidly built.

I am already noticed your posts on the Celebrity Heights, MJKoP. That little zinger of yours on the Jerry Seinfeld page was pretty sharp. My own posts are a little, um, indulgent. I try and I try to stick to the subject of height, but I often fly off on tangents relating to other aspects of various celebrities' personalities and careers. (This can get out of hand. I have a near-psychotic scorn for Bob Dylan, for example.)

But height is such a striking personal attribute. People who are unusually tall or short are aware of it all the time, and people who are just midrange in height often want to be taller, especially if they are public figures. My favourite category of post here is, "I met him and there's no way he's five foot eleven." Which reminds me: Elvis wasn't five foot eleven either.

Oddly, I don't really like a lot of Elvis's songs, and you'd need a shotgun to get me to sit through one of his movies. He interests me because he was an unusually decent man. I think I read somewhere that half of all the records sold in the United States in 1956 were by Elvis. (Or maybe it was half of all the records sold by RCA.) The thing is, he was not just a man but the principal capital asset of an entire industry. I'd imagine he'd be in shoes probably dress shoes or boots that would give a solid inch or 1.25.

Hi Amaral, it is hard to see, however I think they both could be, even though the other two men are barefooted. I have looked through many photos from this session and in some Elvis and Ed are barefooted but in others they appear to be wearing some type of black shoewear. The one I posted I think Elvis looks taller than usual next to Ed, as when barefooted they are virtually the same, perhaps with Elvis having half an inch. Hopefully you have seen the other photos of Ed with Joe Lewis and Bruce Lee. Ed Parker was obviously a true legend in the martial arts world, even helping Bruce Lee to become famous, and he was described in the martial arts world as being 6ft tall, long before his association with Elvis.

Okay, if you're one to talk about objectivity, you might need to take a few pages out of your own book. :) But seriously, using blanket such as "they prove my point", is quite irresponsible because, yes, if those pictures you selected to share were the only things we had to gauge ABC's height(as this applies to *so* many people on this site, and, no, not just former members whose names began with the letter "F" with a number on the end), of course it would suggest that you COULD be right. But we frequently see pictures passed off as hardcore "proof" where A. Ground/footwear not visible and/or obscured B. Deceptive angles C. Making assumptions that XYZ standing next to ABC is of whatever given height.

RisingForce quite frankly irritates the heck out of me when it comes to his views on world politics, as we got into a heated debate over it and I was quite appalled by what I considered flat-out ignorance of the worst type imaginable. But I have to hand it to him - he's probably one of, if not THE, best and most comprehensive height sleuths ever to have graced this website. He also never fails to humbly acknowledge where he could be mistaken, but cogently explains why he is inclined to stick to his convictions. Of course, I'm sure your rebuttal will again be that he wore lifts and I'M the one who is being fooled, which I can respect as well.

I never implied that when the vast majority of a crowd has a differing opinion, the minority is wrong by default. But when it comes to the context of this site, what are the odds that one man(Tom), would be the one guy who somehow is on to something, and practically everyone else is just blind to the facts? I mean, the statistical probabilities of that being the case are fairly low, no? Which is all the more evidence(but obviously not PROOF!), to suggest that one could reasonable deduct that you could be Frank2/KnowitAll/Steve/et al because they all had identical unpopular opinions, so if at least four apparently separate individuals held whatever controversial viewpoints, it could bolster the case. I definitely despise Glenn far more than Frank2(whom, incidentally I really hold no grudge against, as I stated earlier), but you felt the need to clarify that you weren't Glenn either - to which I responded that I never accused you of such...as there is NO evidence to suggest that. Hi Tom, yes Elvis would have been 6ft 2 in in his films and we all know that he wasn’t this height, even Elvis himself stated that he was only 6ft.
I disagree with the height growth in a persons twenties, unusual yes but not never. Like I said it’s well documented that Johnny Cash grew by almost two inches when he was on National service, what age he was I don’t know, but at a guess he would have been twenty plus?
Anyway , I’m sure you agree from my barefoot photos of Elvis that he and Ed Parker were the same height?
I have now submitted the photo of Parker with 6ft Joe Lewis and likewise they are also the same height, both towering over Bruce Lee. So it’s pretty obvious surely that Elvis was this height because you can’t lie with my barefoot photos.So what do you think now?????

Mike, people don’t grow in height in their 20’s. When Elvis entered the army he was 23. Elvis was no more than 5’11’’. I recently watched Tickle Me. Elvis wore height increasing boots. I noticed 5’10’’ Jack Mullaney wore tennis shoes with hardly any heel. That made Elvis look a lot taller than him.

That is 5ft 7in- 5ft 8in Bruce Lee in the middle and he was a good friend of Parker’s.
Both Ed and Joe are wearing the same outfit so probably in the USA team and most probably the same footwear , so I am trying to find these other six footers for you!

Ed Parker is listed online as being that height and so if that, like Elvis’ height isn’t believed then really everyone’s listed height is incorrect and people you refer to about being a certain height can’t be believed either.
It’s not nonsense either about the height growth in the army, unlikely I accept but a possibility as it has been reported by a journalist Nancy Anderson who said that he had grown when she met him during his service.

This is a barefoot photo and can be verified by viewing a full length shot which I submitted a few days ago.
I still believe that Elvis grew late just like Johnny Cash apparently did by up to two inches when Cash went into the airforce!
This is why barefoot photos beat anything else hands down as you can’t argue about lifts or shoe wear etc, but of course the same applies in relation to camera angles.
You can clearly see though that Elvis was tall and not an average 5ft 10in or indeed 5ft 11in . For me a definite six footer.
People can say that Ed Parker’s height and even Vernon’s can’t be verified, however to us Elvis fans and in my case 57 years and counting we know that we are correct.

Sorry, but this is absolutely ridiculous...the photo YOU shared, Tom, shows that Elvis was NOT a lot taller than Bronson, contrary to what you just stated on the 16th. It's one of the best shots for comparison purposes due to it being full-bodied, on a flat surface, *and* with identical footwear. I saw a solid two inches of difference - perhaps a bit more, but perhaps not. It certainly shatters the belief that Elvis was a 6'2" guy barefooted, but Elvis is still easily a very strong 5'11", and almost unquestionable over that mark. Since Bronson and Presley's heights are therefore now dependent upon one another, you definitely went far overboard with your Bronson estimates when you say he was nothing over 5'7" and possibly 5'6".

Go to the Bronson page here. Plenty of evidence presented by RisingForce showcases a 5'9" peak Bronson. Check it all out, and report back; Rising makes some very compelling arguments. Since you are absolutely not Frank2(at least according to you), I expect you to come around on this one, since Rising sells his case very well, and leaves little to no room for any counterarguments. Frank2, as entertaining as he was, could be one seriously stubborn S.O.B., to the point where he stuck to his stories of Stallone at 5'7", Gary Oldman at at least 5'10" barefoot, Michael Jackson at 5'7", et al., even when the overwhelming evidence belied his vast proclamations many times over. Frank2 was known to be incredibly unreasonable when it came to budging from his initial height estimations, but since I now am willing to accept that you are not him, I'm sure you'll read the comments and view the links on Bronson's page and come back fully convinced. ;)

Rising, Borgnine himself claimed to be 5’9’’. Why would he lie? It’s extremely unusual for an actor to claim a height shorter than they really are. But I have to say that Borgnine looked more like a 5’10” guy. But no way was he 5’11’’. He’s obviously shorter than actors listed as being 6’. And he wore obvious lifts in From Here to Eternity to look taller than 5’10’’ Montgomery Clift. Borgnine admitted wearing lifts in the film in an interview I read. He said Clift was an inch taller than him.

Bronson was short. No question. There are more photos of Curtis with Bronson I couldn’t link. There was a two inch difference. But then since both men wore lifts, it’s amusing to think what they’d look like without then standing barefoot. After Douglas’s accident, he lost height. And he wasn’t that tall to begin with. For those who doubt Bronson was short, there’s nothing more to be said except camera angles can change actor’s heights as they appear together. Obviously Elvis was a lot taller than Bronson. Their eye-levels and body frame are close, but of course Curtis has the longer head. And the pic with Douglas is hard to tell due to the camera angle, they look close in height there nonetheless. I've seen many Bronson films and he mostly looks like a completely average height man to me. Including films he appeared in barefoot. Whether he wore lifts at times, he wasn't wearing Bogart's Casablanca shoes or Karloff's Frankenstein boots. I think we'll have to agree to disagree because I just don't see a possibility Bronson was under 5'8", much less 5'7". Incidentally, I can't believe Ernest Borgnine was only 5'9" in his prime. The article regarding the hairpiece is from a’ joke’ magazine. Elvis had white hair, dyed black and this would run into his eyes constantly under the stage lights. It’s a pity he felt the need to dye it, but I suppose it was the image thing.
Also recently heard that in ‘74 Led Zep’s management were interested in taking Elvis from the Colonel. Now that would have been interesting.

He might have worn that hairpiece which looked like it was made by the same person who made Liberace’s wig because it meant Elvis didn’t have to spend time having his own hair styled. I still think a 5'11.5" listing for Elvis might make more sense overall than a weak six foot. Bronson would have to be more 5'9.5" if Elvis was nearer 6', I admit.

Bronson did not have lifts in his bare feet and some, including Rob thought Bronson looked about 5'9" in his barefoot appearances. There's also a scene early in Death Wish 3 where Bronson is sitting on a bench and his pant leg comes enough to see he doesn't look to be wearing lifts yet he was still not much shorter than 5'8.5" Deborah Raffin who was wearing heels. Keep in mind, Bronson was 63 by that point. Frank2 actually mentioned Bronson having one leg shorter than the other(Frank2 was also of the opinion Bronson was only 5'7" ;) ) and Bronson does often look to me like he has one shoe with a higher heel than the other, which actually might have mistakenly led people to believe he wore big heels when only one of his heels were big. I've only seen a few occasions where I thought he might be wearing lifts, though, and even if he did, that'd explain why he could look his official height of 5'10", which would be almost impossible if he were 5'7". As a man a bit over 5'8", I have a pretty good idea of how a 5'7" man looks and Bronson just doesn't have the build of a man that short. Although even if I'm right about Bronson being 5'9" or 5'8.5" absolute minimum, I'm still not seeing Elvis much more than 2" taller.

Although I do find Tom's photo of Elvis interesting as it may substantiate some of the lift rumors. There is at least a chance, imo, that Elvis measured 5'11" barefoot and then the 6'0" were shoe measurements. That seems much more likely than repeatedly getting measured his high and then once at his low. Though it could also be a case of an error, or some rounding.

@Rob: If Elvis measured 6'0.5" in boots, wouldn't that make 5'11.25"-5'11.5" most likely barefoot?

I've seen the shoes he wore on stage and in public, the heels massive. Easily add 2in+. I'm sure in person he was never without them and appeared at least 6ft2. The people at Graceland described him as being just that.

Most actors did not wear lifts. Only the short ones or those who were of medium height who wanted to look tall. I never saw Richard Widmark wear lifts yet he was no more than 5'10''. Perhaps even 5'9''. I never saw lifts on Jack Lemmon who was reportedly 5'9''. Nor on many actors under six feet. Ty Power wore lifts in The Long Gray Line. But that was the only feature I spotted them in.

And we have no proof of anyone's height. Think about it. Unless measured and recorded by an irrefutable source such as during an autopsy, everything is pure speculation. And official heights with celebrities are always suspect.

Hi Amaral, this is from the NewGladiators film and you can see that Elvis was quite happy to be filmed barefooted with others around him. He was obviously not that bothered about his height. The person he is training with was I believe his stepbrother David and he is a bit taller than Elvis. Towards the end of the film when you see Elvis enter the lesson he is followed by Rick Stanley who has the blonde hair and he was six foot, the same height as Elvis. TCB

I agree the 182 cm might certainly be a bit too high, but 5'11"-5'11.5" seems spot on. Elvis didn't quite look Rob's listing with Charles Bronson in Kid Galahad. If Bronson really was never over 5'8.5", then a solid 5'11" might be the most there, though I agree Bronson could look taller than his listed height at times.

Considering the fact there was a height listing of 5'11" flat on his medical record, and a 5'11.5" claim from his costume designer (who would have obviously measured him), I'm not seeing how this current listing works.

@MJKoP: Seems we're close here as I think the range has to be the range of his medical records with 5'11" the low and 6' the high, so I think 5'11.5" would be the safest guess.

@Tom: I can't see the 5'7" stuff for Bronson. I'm almost positive a 65 year old Bronson was taller than 5'8.5" Chuck Norris: Click Here and a 69 year old Bronson was definitely taller than 5'8" Sean Penn: Click Here Click Here Bronson looks like he may have a bit extra heel, but the front of the shoe would look different if he had a big internal lift. A supposedly 5'8" Dennis Hopper looks shorter than both, but I think Hopper was more 5'7.5" or so. But even if I'm right about Bronson at 5'9", I still don't see Elvis above 5'11"-5'11.5" range with him. Certainly, a 5'7" Bronson would suggest Michael Winner was more like 5'7" than 5'9" as well.

@Mike 2: It's important to remember not everyone is precise with fractions when it comes to height either. Most I know don't include 1/4" and some don't even include half inches, but rather round to the nearest inch. Although I don't think Elvis was taller than 5'11.5" myself, if he was 5'11.75" as listed here for arguments sake, most would probably call that 6' anyway. Many wound round 5'11.5" to 6' as well. And not everyone can tell the difference visually either. I think it's silly to say disregard anything where they happen to have shoes as well. 95% of the comparisons available will be with shoes. Imo, it'd be foolish to base an estimate on just one comparison. Besides, shoes are only one variable and typically the easiest to estimate. Posture, ground level and camera angles are all constant factors and can be much more difficult to estimate. For instance, if you see a pair of cowboy boots, you can say the heel is likely about 1 3/4", which will give perhaps 1 5/8" in actual height over bare feet. Angles, posture and ground can't really be quantified like that.

Here is a prime example of why photos in shoes can’t be relied upon. I am not 100% sure but I believe that Johnny Cash in his prime was 6ft 1.5ins, so in boots he could have been as tall as 6ft 3in.
The photo in which Elvis is in a tux and most probably normal shoes is usually the one shown, but in this JC is in a western outfit

and most probably wearing high heeled cowboy boots.
The other less seen photo of EP and JC shows them to be of similar height, so JC wasn’t much taller, if any, it’s just that people see one photo and assume things.

Bronson was about 5'7''. I watched Kid Galahad. They obviously used angles and tricks to adjust everyone's height. Problem besides making short actors appear taller is simply getting them into the frame. People have different heights. Imagine you're directing a movie with an actress who's barely five feet where she does a standing love scene with an actor who's well over six feet. The actress has to stand on a box, otherwise all we'd see in the frame is the tall actor. Gig Young was 6'1''. In most shots he and Elvis look to be the exact same height. But if we look at photos of Elvis with people who are 6'1" such as Johnny Cash, Elvis is shorter.

As for this character Glenn, I think spending time discussing him is a waste of time. He sounds like a total flake.

Have you viewed the New Gladiators film Tom? I’m trying to offer other examples here where Elvis is barefoot. I don’t understand the obsession with film or photos which have everyone wearing all sorts of different footwear.
I think we have to be careful not to be disrespectful to people such as Col Parker’s widow who has nothing to gain, just like Linda Thompson.

Why did I talk to Glenn for several years and have no idea he believed in things like casting spells? Maybe after he measured 5'6.5", he found someone to cast a spell that made him 5'8" and that's why he disregards the measurement? Does Glenn not consider there were witnesses to Hitler's final days as well? In fact, we even have accounts of his top men trying to convince him to leave Berlin while Hitler obviously insisted on staying. If a few affidavits convince him, how about affidavits signed by Rob and Jenny swearing Glenn measured 5'6.5" without shoes...would affidavits still be compelling to him? ;)

As for Elvis' height, it's a fair point about shoes, but what about Charles Bronson? He wore flat boxing shoes with Elvis: Click Here And the height difference is never much more the 2" in the film. Ed Parker is described on the internet as being 6 ft tall and surely from your observations of these photos you have viewed you could tell that he was definitely over 5 ft 10 ins!!
Even in the 50's Elvis was described as being tall and lanky and referred to as being taller than imagined by journalists when they met him. How tall did they think he was- 5 ft 7ins??
When Elvis says that he is six foot it is not disputed, and one journalist has him down as 6ft 2ins, so Elvis was not it appears exaggerating.
I am pleased that you think that Ed Parker was the same if not shorter than Elvis as this confirms to me that Elvis was indeed 6ft tall. I have met other friends of Elvis, and looked at photos of these people with Elvis, but the difference is that they have shoes or boots on. So I disregarded these photos, just like Berle and Allen.
Have a look at the New Gladiators film on YouTube and look at the film of Elvis doing Karate both in boots and bare feet , and see him next to 5ft 10 in Bill superfoot Wallace, and 5 ft 10 in Dave Hebler.

Why? We know Steve Allen was quite tall and Milton Berle was 5'10". I have no proof Ed Parker was six feet. Only what you claim. I've looked at dozens of photos of Parker. In some he appears an inch shorter than Elvis.

And lots of photos taken of Elvis show him wearing shoes or boots that increased his height by at least two inches.

Early in his career before he wore such footwear he looked shorter. Just compare photos of him with Col. Parker. In the 1950's Elvis is the same height. Then into the 1960's Elvis is two to three inches taller. I doubt Col. Parker lost that much in height. In 1957, Col. Parker was 48. In 1966 he was 57. Too young to have lost two to three inches. There are lots of photos taken early on in his career showing Elvis with people who he either appears to be the same height or shorter while later shots show him being taller.

The answer is six foot and I know this because I've met Parker, just like thousands of other people have, and he was known as a 6 ft fighter decades before this site.
Have a look at images online to gauge Parker's height so that you can compare to get an idea. There are some with 5ft 7in - 5ft 8in Bruce Lee, and although it looks as though shoe wear is worn,Parker dwarfs Bruce.
Just for information the photo of Elvis and Lee is a fake , Elvis was really standing next to a Wayne Carmen.
There are many barefoot photos of Elvis but the one with Parker offers the best for comparison. Yes, Elvis wore two inch heels in the 70's , but so did I and everyone else, it was the fashion.
To try and balance things out I think I am right in saying that just about everyone interested in how tall Elvis was agrees that he was no shorter than 5-11 but I respect your opinion. TCB

Yes...yes, he did. I was fb friends with him for many years, so I saw all of his status update alerts. He would always chime in on random UFO/paranormal/"cryptozoology" mumbo-jumbo. When it came to the Hitler escape theory, he offered that he had seen sworn affidavits from Argentinian residents. If anyone were to even gently challenge his notions, he'd blow a fuse like you wouldn't believe it - as most of us here already know all too well. "Guarded" isn't even a strong enough word to describe how I would have to handle myself whenever interacting with him.

I can now 100% confirm that he is mistaken in at least some of his beliefs because he also believed in casting spells, hexes, and curses....so I'd definitely be dead by now. :D

Hi John 1, I'm sorry I don't know Jerry's official height, but he and Elvis were almost the same height. My problem with some of these photos is that we don't know the real heights of the other stars involved and they tend to be all wearing different footwear, and of course in movies all sorts of camera angles would be used.
There is no way that Elvis was 5ft 10 as an adult, but I see how people believe this when they see these early films. This is why I keep on banging the drum about full length bare foot photos, because height can't be disguised by lifts etc. Linda Thompson is a 5ft 9 ins former beauty queen, and karate master Ed Parker was 6 ft tall and it's clear to see that Elvis in bare feet was the same height as Parker and a few inches taller than Linda, who has nothing to gain by claiming that Elvis was 6ft 1in. She might be rounding up the possible 6ft .05 figure, but why should we ignore this, especially from a person who lived day in and day out with Elvis. She didn't exaggerate Bruce Jenner's height in her book.
Like I previously said, sometimes in photographs you don't look as tall as you imagine, and I'm sure that we have all thought this at one time, but look at the barefoot photos of Elvis and you will be able see that he was tall and in the six foot region, and definitely taller than 5 ft 10in. The plot thickens! According to Linda Thompson Elvis was 6ft 1ins and in July 1972 weighed a slender 165-170 lbs. Elvis certainly was in good shape for his August '72 stint at the Hilton, and Linda correctly refers to her Husband to be Bruce Jenner as 6ft 2ins, so why can't she be correct when mentioning Elvi's height.
Linda lived with Elvis for almost 5 years, and she herself stands st 5ft 9 ins , so she can speak with an authority on the subject.
It makes me smile when I keep on seeing these waist up film shots when who knows what lifts the other actors were wearing. Elvis in these early films was playing a young kid, so could it have been filmed this way, so that Elvis looked smaller.
Once again people on here live in denial. We have Elvis in bare feet next to a six foot man and a 5ft 9 ins woman and it's so ovious to see that he was a six foot male. No lifts, no waist up shots or shoe wear. You don't need this stuff and it makes me laugh that when I give my honest view on Ed Parker's height, who we can see that in bare feet he was the same size as Elvis, people including Tom simply airbrush it, or casually ignore it because it doesn't suit, and then post a waist up shot which could have involved all types of shoe wear and camera angles. Believe me, I'm 6ft 1ins and in some photographs I don't look that tall,even walking down the street there are plenty of people who are taller than me. 6 feet although classed as tall isn't huge. Look, I don't dismiss all conspiracies until I've at least read or heard the case--except for the truly outlandish like Elvis somehow being alive--but I don't know of any serious Hitler/WW2/Third Reich scholar who believes that. That was mostly fueled by Soviet propaganda and Soviet propaganda was probably the most unreliable in history until North Korea the last few decades. Other than that, it's a stupid marketing ploy used by the History Channel along with other sensationalist angles they argue weakly and then concede at the end of the program that it's not true while offering no new information. It kind of annoys me as someone with such an interest in history, particularly that period and Germany. Maybe I'm being unfair, but I highly doubt Glenn even knows much about Hitler.

As for Frank2, I'm 100% sure KnowItAll was him, I believe Steve is/was a better disguised version, but I'm not sure about Tom, who seems a decent enough poster either way regardless of the fact that I personally don't believe Elvis could have been less than 5'11". But I'll take Tom's word at face value as I'd have to see a pattern like the other aliases on other pages. Not that any of this is important.
