About 4 inches shorter maybe slightly more than William Holden in heels, see 33:26. If Holden is around 5'11.5 in shoes, 5'7.5 in those heels seems about right. Click Here She's becoming one of my favourite actresses of the 30s and 40s, love the smoky voice too! There's an earthiness about her you don't get with other actresses, the actress equivalent to a valuable antique musical instrument!. Trying to find more her 30s films.

The Bitter Tea of General Yen was a good example of those early 30s movies which had that hostile sort of atmosphere in them. I thought it was pretty good. Remember it came at a time when the Chinese were growing suspicious and launching wars.

The Bitter Tea of General Yen was an interesting film, am I right Arch, if a bit static-y? Would make an interesting double feature with Song at Midnight, which was also recommended in 1001 movies you must see.

It's a shame Stanwyck has faded into so much obscurity relative to the likes of Bette Davis, Joan Crawford, Katharine Hepburn, etc. For some reason she gives the impression of a 5'7" woman, though 5'4" is obviously more accurate.

She looked gorgeous in The Lady Eve - with brunette hair, before her "blonde femme fatale" days. She wore 3-inch heels throughout the movie, and looked nearly a head shorter than 6'1.5" Henry Fonda. 5'4" is probably right for her.

5' 2" at Paramount on the set of The Colbys from what I saw. People treated her like china on a shelf. I don't think she wanted to be there. I think Spelling gave her a blank check.

Barbara was more like 5'2". She had a long torso requiring Edith Head to design special outfits to change the level of her waist.

Interesting. Barbara Stanwyck is usually listed at 5'5" and I accepted that until I started looking into it recently. Now, I too think Barbara was most likely about 5'2"-5'3" just comparing her to other actors. As far as Gloria Swanson, I've usually seen her listed at about 4'11"-5'. So, the 5' estimate Frank2 mentioned makes sense.

She was no more than five two, max. In fact most female stars of the twenties, thirties and forties were short. I remember the time I met and talked with Gloria Swanson and was amazed at how small she was in person. Of course that was when she was in her mid-seventies. But at that time I'd say she was barely five feet tall.
