Ginger is best known for her films with Fred Astaire. She was a real workhorse, making a whole bunch of films in the 1930s and 1940s even if she didn't have to do them.
I guess she was around 5'3" to 5'4".

I still think Monroe is massively overrated, possibly the most overrated Hollywood star of all time.

Could pull off looking a bit taller at times. Yes Sam love her too, certainly underrated in comparison to the other big stars and enjoyed her in everything I've seen. Her and Henry Fonda had amazing chemistry in Tales of Broadway, I wish they'd done more films together. I think they had to have been very good friends.

So tiny in "Top Hat." When she is wearing her riding gear she is absolutely petite. Beautiful and petite. Looks smaller than 5'4, but I am guessing that is about her height. Ginger Rogers is one of many in show business who aged dramatically over a short period of time, and I wonder whether she was 5 or 6 years older than she admitted...

This only has 4 votes and only two comments in six years!! If this was 1937 she'd be in the top 50 on the site.

When I've seen Ginger dancing with Fred Astaire, there is no way I could ever have thought of her as 'above average height' for her day, merely average! If I'd had to guess, I would have gone for 5ft4, but I'll settle for 5ft4.5 anyway, as I haven't seen her in anything for absolutely ages!

Definitely got a big crush on her now. Those eyes in Kitty Foyle.... Darker hair on her like in Kitty Foyle brought out her face and eyes more I thought.

Rob, could you add the following to her credits?: The Gay Divorcee, Stage Door, Vivacious Lady, Primrose Path and The Major and the Minor.

On top of her wit and fun presence, Arch, she was an excellent dancer which means she knew how to use her body well!
It seems like Ginger Rogers could do it all, was good both in dramas and comedies and could dance and sing, and was gorgeous, intelligent and funny.

@Sam I thought it was just me!! Honestly I'm hard pushed to think of somebody more irritating than Don Murray in Bus Stop!!! Judy Holliday in Born Yesterday was cute at the beginning but my the end her voice got incredibly annoying and whiny, but at least wasn't as "fecking stupid" as Murray. I'm increasingly becoming fonder of Ginger, much more attractive than a lot of the screen sirens as you get the impression she's out wit you and be great to be around which is a very sexy trait.

Yeah, both Carole Lombard and Ginger were talented, funny and hot...Carole was the more skilled comedianne perhaps but Ginger could dance beautifully.
Yeah, both of the main characters in Bus Stop were incredibly irritating, Don Murray got on my nerves even more than Marilyn there. I was hoping a bus would barrel over those characters most of the time.

Ginger wasn't quite as sharp as one of my all time favourites, Carole Lombard, but she was still a brilliant comedienne and highly talented and hot to boot!

The worst I saw Monroe look in film was in Bus Stop I think. I hated that movie, largely because I found Don Murray incredibly irritating. She was really quite cute/sweet in films like The Seven Year Itch, Some Like It Hot and The Misfits etc but other times looked a little scabby in all honesty. Wildly overrated in all departments I think but she was still good/quite attractive in a lot of films.

"Dog rough"...haha, I'll have to remember that one.
Arch Stanton said on 11/Aug/14
Not at all Sam, I agree with you facially in the 30s! Monroe had a lovely chest and was quite cute at times, but at times she could look dog rough and cheap. There were much sexier ladies around in the 50s, like Liz Taylor, Vivien Leigh and Jean Simmons for starters!

Arch, do you think I'm crazy for finding Rogers to be more aesthetically attractive (at least facially) in the 1930s (such as the pictures above) than Marilyn Monroe was? Thinking of Rogers' jealousy of Monroe in Monkey Business.
Arch Stanton said on 9/Aug/14
Rob can you add Kitty Foyle and Monkey Business? She could look taller than this.
Arch Stanton said on 28/Apr/14
Rob it's Swing Time not Swing Dance. Kitty Foyle is arguably her most notable role in which she won the Oscar and definitely worth mentioning, but I agree she's possibly best known for Top Hat.

Rob, the middle shot there is the beautiful Rita Hayworth not Ginger Rogers. Yes, Ginger (also a hottie in her day, BTW) was about this height with Fred Astaire, et al.

Here is a 1936 clip with Lucille Ball and Harriet Hilliard Nelson (from Ozzie and Harriet). Rogers might be wearing slightly smaller heels, but looks about 4" shorter than Ball, and 1" shorter than Nelson.
Ball was 5'7 1/2" at her peak, so assuming Rogers's tap shoes were about 1" small heal, then this would make her about 5'-4 1/2". Nelson was a similar height, maybe 5'-5".

Really! But when she dances with Fred Astaire who is reported to be 175 cm/5'9...even though she's in heels she shouldn't be that close to his height...I'm a definite 5'5/165cm and when I'm in high stilettos next to my dad who's only 5'8/173 cm I'm still a fair bit shorter than him...

She was pretty thin, so she seemed taller. When she danced with Fred Astaire she always wore heels too. Wow, what a talent she was.

I've seen her in a few movies on TCM recently and I had no idea how talented- and attractive- she was. A true American treasure. She was magnificent.
