Rob, what peak height would you award Jacques Marin?

Hepburn clearly edged out Marin in Charade (even in a scene where she was wearing slippers), and Marin was barely 5’4” by the time Herbie Goes to Monte Carlo was filmed in 1976. However, Marin often looked a strong 5’5” in his earlier years and was only about 3-4cm shorter than Bernard Blier in Jo (1971). Blier had stooped posture and potentially had lost height by then, but was very likely 5’7” peak.

She looked a bit thinner than normal in How to Steal a Million I thought, I could even believe under 110 pounds in that film. A biography I read said she had some sort of Indonesian ancestry I think from the Dutch East indies, which you can see in her very dainty bone structure, she definitely has some East Asian in her, who are often naturally very thin. She can look taller than this because she was so thin.

5 ft 7 would be a stretch I think, maybe 5'6.75 earlier in the day. Like Liz Taylor I thought Audrey looked better in the 60s and 70s than she did in the 50s. Maybe their hair styles in the 50s weren't the best and shorter. Ingrid Bergman another one who had a beautiful face but never had the best hair.

Bobby, Audrey's surname was not actually "Hepburn". Her fathers name was Ruston or something like that. He double barrelled Hepburn to his name because he believed he was a descendant of one of Mary Queen of Scots husbands (that was false) and to sound more "posh". And her father was of Anglo/Austrian ancestry while his mother was a Dutch baroness.

Its possible that maybe being malnourished during the War may have stunted her growth a bit but it can't be too drastic. There are also other factors to consider in growth.

Also wanna mention; apparently Katharine Hepburn and Audrey Hepburn are not related even though I always thought they were. One other thing, Katharine came from a wealthy family and wound up her at her listed height, but Audrey was malnourished during WW2 and wound up the same height. Was it genetics? She's Dutch apparently.

It is sadly true that niece Jaclyn's idol,5'7" Audrey Hepburn,was skinny for her height because during World War II,she had to eat tulip bulbs because the Nazis occupied Audrey's home land of the Netherlands during that time and stole all their food! But Audrey did not make many movies,which is true. But what few movies Hepburn made belong in anybody's video "diet," like My Fair Lady. Although Hepburn's singing voice is not her own voice,she still gave a magic performance as Eliza Dolittle! Sadly there are no survivors from My Fair Lady,but it is my favorite movie and Jaclyn's favorite movie! Add to that many of my friends like Annette Alice Joanie Kathy Debbie Jones and even Coast Guard veteran brother in law Dennis Crowley have seen My Fair Lady and love it! She was sensational in her Best Actress Oscar winner Roman Holiday Sabrina and The Nun's Story. Sadly Audrey died at the age of only 62 in 1993 from kidney cancer,but she'll leave a legacy FOREVER!

Correct at a later time in her life, sure. But she must have been taller than 5ft 6.5 inches at the time of Roman Holiday, because Gregory Peck in dress shoes is certainly not 8.5 inches taller than a ballet slipper wearing Hepburn in the posed PR photos for that film. She was someone who must have lost height uncommonly early. A shooting star in every sense.

seeing Breakfast at Tiffany's I strongly believe Audrey was 5 ft 4 in flat feet In heels she looked 5 ft 7 in the movie.She stood the same height as the rich guy Rusty Trawler played by Stanley Adams who's height was between 5' 5 to 5'6.. She had heels on and was the same height as him. I feel her height when doing breakfast at Tiffany's was 5'4.

Her son said that she was 5'10" in one interview and I'm 99.9% sure he was mistaken, he must have translated centimeters to feet and inches incorrectly. In an article about his own daughter Emma (Audrey's granddaughter) it is mentioned that Emma is 5'10" and Audrey was 5'7", which I believe.

Audrey's other son said in a book that she was 5'6" and ~85lbs at the end of WW2, she would have been 16 so she may have grown a bit after that to a solid 5'7".

I've often said that people are short changing him thinking he was only 5'7 range like Bing Crosby. He consistently looked 5 ft 9. There is a good full length photo of her outdoors with (big heel cowboy boot wearing) Audie Murphy and Burt Lancaster in the Unforgiven in which she looks a strong 5'7''.

Interesting how she looks in this John Ford Western. I think she usually played quite different roles, and the character created onscreen can look more slight than the actual person. At 1:56 she looks 5'6.5'' next to 5'4'' Lillian Gish, but Gish's footwear is anyones guess

Rather than looking at her next to very tall people like Gregory Peck I think the best way is to look her with those closer in stature. Good photo of her and Kay Thompson (5'5.5 and in high heels) makes her look a strong 5'7''. Walking arm in arm with Fred Astaire under the Eiffel tower in Funny Face she looks at least as tall as Fred though she is wearing very low shoes. Never seen a photo that makes me think she was definitely under 5'7'. (By the way I don't think Fred Astaire can have been 5'9'')

In ballet slippers Audrey Hepburn was least as tall as Fred Astaire in the dance sequences of Funny Face. In low heels in full length photo of them dancing, she was at mid ear level of her 6'3'' husband Mel Ferrer. Consistently at eye level of 6'2'' Sean Connery. Never wore anything but low heels in Roman Holiday though Peck was 6'3''. Probably as as tall as her son said she was: 5'10'.

In Breakfast at Tiffany's, when she and George Peppard's character kiss in the rain (lots of shots of this) she looks well over 5'7', even though she is leaning and tilting her head he is standing very straight. (Peppard's shoes look substantially heeled.) The top of her head (not just hairstyle) is consistently at Sean Connery's eye level in a number of photos. And she is just as tall looking in an impromptu photo next to Anthony Perkins. Connery and Perkins are both 6'2''. Conclusion: Audrey Hepburn was not under 5'9''.

Self claimed or not, this is a massive underestimate Rob. I checked here before as comparison for Sophia Loren beside Gregory Peck and was disconcerted. Now I see why. On closer examination of full length photos, Audrey Hepburn's proportions alone would suggest a height quite substantially above 5ft 6.5. Her head to total height ratio looks all wrong for her listing, unless she had a very small head. Similarly, those remarkably long legs are not terribly likely to have belonged to a 5'7'' person. More conclusively, she looked 5-6 inches shorter than known solid 6'3'' men. Good impromptu full length shots of her with Mel Ferrer, and with Gregory Peck, show that she was not much under the eye level of the aforementioned 6'3'' men when she wore low heels (or no heels, Peck may have had bigger heeled shoes than her in Roman Holiday).

Her (6'4'') son says "But, don't forget, she wasn't exactly small. She was 5ft 10in and looked more delicate on screen than she was in person"

Marni Nixon's voice was dubbed in for the movie "My Fair Lady". Bogart and a lot of other male actors wore lifts and or shoes with extra thick heels. Always look at the woman's shoes. If she is wearing short heels or flats that is a give away that the male actor is a little guy. In the case of John Wayne and Maureen O'Hara they would have her standing on a box or stool. No heels could make up that height difference.

If she said 5'6.5" then that's exactly what she was. This is the one celebrity who was absolutely truthful - if anything, she'd want to be shorter because she was tall for a woman especially back in those days (5'7" for a woman is the equivalent of 6' for a man today - back then it must have been the equivalent of 6'2" or so). I can't think of a more lovely actor or actress in history, inside and out. By the way, I think she definitely holds the record for the best government licensed photo ever taken, looking at that first passport photo.

I was 5'11" at that time and the top of her head came just a bit above my chin which would have made her 5'6" in her bare feet. She didn't weigh much over 110 pounds wringing wet. Emilee: I too have read every book on Audrey Hepburn, and It did say that after the war with the access to chocolate and other foods, she indulged and was 130-140 lbs at her heaviest. Her ballet teacher told her that in order to be the prima ballerina she would have to lose the weight. She got down to 110lbs and never went over it (except during pregnancies); she allotted herself one chocolate square a day :)

Well, if you read Audrey Hepburn: An Intimate Portrait, you will see that she said she would never weigh above 103. Supposedly she never did besides when she was pregnant. However, this book is believed to be highly inaccurate. Also, the book you cite (Enchantment) is written by a man that is known for writing about so called scandalous celebrities and embellishes their lives quite a bit. I have always read Audrey as being barely over a hundred and have never seen or read anything credible to dispute that. So, I wouldn't put too much stock in one novel. She was just a very thin individual naturally, and after the effects of the war and her short lived career as a ballerina she further ensured this small figure.

The book that reveals Audrey Hepburn weighing 150 pounds after the war ended, is "Enchantment" by Donald Spoto. After the deprivations of war, having access to food, especially chocolate, must have been like heaven for her. However, she could not hope to be a ballerina if the weight did not come off.

At the time, 5'7" was tall, especially during the war. And the average for dancers has always been slightly smaller than average. Probably around 5'2" then. Now, dancers come in every size and shape. Even ballet dancers. I'm 5'9" and while I am taller than most other girls in my ballet class, I'm still going.
I believe her to be about 5'7". No taller and not much smaller.

I think 5'7, maybe a tiny bit less is about right for Audrey. Also, I'm 5'8 and did ballet for YEARS (since being about 6) but as I got taller it did become difficult (due to the extra weight from my height). As for the comment about her being 140lbs, I don't think that's right. I have a book about Audrey with many photos and articles to take out and copies, and in all photos ranging from her being a baby to quite old, she was never 140lbs.

I have read every book on Audrey...she is just shy of 5'7, like me. She was too tall to be a ballerina, and too big. She was originally about 140 lbs then lost a ton of weight (obviously) and Givenchy never had to change the model of her body that he used for her dresses until her death. She maintained that skinny weight (around/under 100?) all those years.

As I was born in 1940, I can easily remember the day when the average height of American was much shorter. I once met Edward G. Robinson -- one of the tough guys of film noir. He was so tiny, about 5' tall. I could scarcely believe it. Humprey Bogart was about 5'7", which standing alongside a woman 5' 10" would make him seem a shrimp. So he wore lifts and Audrey wore flats. The important thing is that there talent, character, and screen presence made them much taller than today actors.

Everything I've read on Audrey- articles and various books- states her height as being between 5ft 6 3/4 and 5ft 7 1/2. From photos, I would say 5'6 3/4" seems most accurate. I am the same height and often feel too tall, although I am not much above average, and all my life I have been referred to as tall. 5'7" is indeed pushing it for a ballerina, especially when Audrey was young; Nijinsky was only 5'4", whereas Audrey en pointe reached about 5'10".

She had a very slight, slender build, which makes her appear quite tall in nearly every photograph of her.

I think people actually underestimate her height usually. She was quite tall, considering she grew up during World War II and was malnourished at the time. She was taller than a lot of the men back then. Very long-legged.

It's astonishing how people are so star-struck that they psychologically maginify a celebrity's height--as in the case of all the people claiming that Hepburn was 5'10''. She never claimed to be anything taller than 5'7''. I have no doubt that in high-heels she would be close to 5'10'', though. My teacher siad he saw Audrey Hepbutn in the late 1950's whiel he was cathcing a trian in New York,he said that she was VERY tall way more than 5'7. I know he he was exagerrating of course, he said she was 6'3. But he said again I say defintley because I was standing right like a foot behign her to be about 5'10. The same height as him.

Ah, I know where the 5ft 6.5 comes from...
She stated this height several times on her various passports...so from her own hand, she is 5ft 6.5 or 169cm!
These are reprinted in the biography by son Sean Hepburn Ferrer, who bizarelly had said '5ft 10' in that quote I found by him...

Hepburn was definitely 5 ft 7 and maybe one third(!)
I heard 5 6 3/4 in one source..but this was probably in her later years...

She definitely wasn't this tall by any stretch....Only perhaps in heels.

i read a bio on her, she was 5'6.5 110 lbs for most of her life. i think at the time, 5'7 was considered too tall to be a dancer unlike now

Even Audrey Hepburn says she was 5'7". I remember reading an interview/article once where she said she was 5'7" and 120.

i'm sorry but i think she was taller. On every biography you can read she had to quit dancing ballet due to her height, and 5'7'' is perfect to a dancer (even at that time).
