One 1973 article mentioned "He is as medium height as you can get (5-foot-9). Not fat. Not lean. A rather flat, untanned face that resembles the local baker, butcher or grocer."

Gardenia surprisingly had about an inch on 5'7" Dick O'Neill and close to two inches on 5'6" Charles Durning in The Front Page, so 5'8" peak might actually be correct for Gardenia after all!

Paul Dooley actually had more like 6cm over Vincent Gardenia in Death Wish. 175.5cm for Dooley and 169.5cm for Gardenia thus works at that time, although I might be being a bit generous to Gardenia, he was potentially closer to 169cm than 170cm by then.

Rob, that’s interesting. On the Andrew Robinson page, you suggested 5’8-5’9 range for Dooley in DS9, but also mentioned he may have started to lose height by that time as he was into his 60s. I guess 5’9.25” peak is not to be ruled out.

How tall does Gardenia look in your above photo, Rob?
I’d say 5’6.5”; he’s seventy there. A strong 5’7” peak is not out of the question.

Gardenia could look 5’6.5” in Death Wish. Highly unlikely he had lost a full inch, let alone 1.5 inches, by 53 years of age.

If you see around 1:05:00 below, Paul Dooley has a good two inches on Gardenia. Now Dooley could have peaked at a strong 5’9” but that would be my highest estimate for him. A flat 5’7” is the most I could buy for Gardenia in that film and he was only 53 years old so he couldn’t have shrunk much if at all. 5’7” peak I’m voting.
