He was born on the 29th January, 1913. ♒️

I’m so pleased to have spotted that ‘Samson and Delilah’ is on TV this afternoon on Film Four.
Victor was 33 at the time of its shooting. I couldn’t help but look on in awe at how tall Angela Lansbury was at age 23. I checked her out to find 173cm - very tall for those days! Angela played Semedar, the sister of Delilah, and the woman who won Samson’s heart. She was killed in front of him and I remember feeling shocked and upset when I saw the film as a child.
Samson has already killed the lion with his bare hands 🥲🦁 and now he is trying to woo Semedar; he’s besotted with her golden hair, which must have been very rare in those times and in that part of the world.
Victor was very well built and looked tall in comparison to the other men.
I see 6ft1.5.
Arch Stanton said on 19/Mar/22
Funny Chaos! Somewhere in 6 ft 1 range I think.
ChaosControl2 said on 18/Mar/22
He claimed he was a strong 6’4 and that he downgraded himself to 6’2.5. You can’t make this up
Fiona said on 17/Mar/22
The 1947 film, Moss Rose, with Victor Mature and Vincent Price the two leads, has them stood next to each other many times. Price is 6ft4 and Mature is most definitely between 4-5 inches shorter, making it clear he was around 6ft in his prime. He was renowned for another part of his anatomy having enormous girth and, ahem, "height". Stewart Granger was 6ft2 and never wore lifts. Richard Burton was 5ft 10 and the idea that he also wore lifts is ridiculous. He was a serious, highly respected Shakespearean actor who would have been laughed off the stage if he ever wore lifts. First time on here and amazed to read a couple of posts equating height with acting talent. Come on! How stupid is that?
Rampage(-_-_-)Clover said on 18/Feb/21
6ft4 is ludicrous but I wouldn’t put him below this listing either
Arch Stanton said on 17/Feb/21
6 ft 4 LMAO!!! Really that's one of the most ridiculous claims on here. I would have gone with F Rob, E-F.
Miss Sandy Cowell said on 27/Nov/20
The way my Mum used to go on about him, I expected to find around 6ft4 for Mature when I first looked on his page.
If ever there was an example of a well-built man who gave the impression that he was taller, then this is he.
That he played the Biblical Samson most certainly helped. I think we were allowed to stay up to see 'Samson and Delilah' so that our Mum could show us (me in particular being a girl) what impeccable taste she had in men, but I didn't like him after he 'murdered the poor golden pussycat!' 👧😭🦁
6ft1.5.

Victor Mature appeared in a movie about professional football with Sonny Tufts and Lloyd Nolan. There are several locker room scenes where Tufts is undeniably taller than Mature, both side by side near their lockers, appearing every bit of two inches taller. Mature is similar in height to Rory Calhoun another phony 6’4” tall guy John Payne,Jack Carson, Dennis Morgan more like a strong 6’2” a shade shorter than Randolph Scott, Joel Mccrae, Fred McMuarry, Charlton Heston, Cesar Romero, Gregory Peck.
Rich Paul said on 16/Nov/19
Ralph Edwards was reportedly 5’9”. Lucy in heels looks to be an inch taller so with regular shoes Edwards was 5’10” making Lucy 5’11” in heels. Mature looks three to four inches taller than Lucy so 6’1” (6’2” in shoes) looks about right. No question that Lucy was tall. When she appeared with Carol Burnett she was visibly taller when both women wore tennis shoes.
richinkle said on 14/Nov/19
In this scene - and many others - from Seven Days Leave, 1942, Lucille Ball looks no more than 4" shorter than Victor Mature. Assuming a 2" heel advantage, that should leave a 6" height difference. If Mature was 6'-1 1/2" , Ball was at least 5'-7 1/2".

Rampage(-_-_-)Clover said on 6/Jan/18
187cm is the lowest I can see this guy at. Looked too imposing to be shorter. 189cm is probably a shoe height though...
But Rob was it ever confirmed that he did claim 6ft4?
Editor Rob
he never seemed to directly say it, it's just that mention in the newspaper about him supposedly lowering his claim...it makes no sense as he never looked a 6ft 4 guy in anything I've seen.
macfan said on 4/Dec/17
I think Rob is about right with 6'1.5. In his shoes he was probably 6'2.5. Vincent Price did appear to be 2.5 inches taller than him in his prime but Victor shrunk in his old age.

Interesting Sandy. She likes a bit of rough eh? ;-) Something very rugged about him, you could imagine that he wasn't a gentleman in the sack haha.
Sandy Cowell said on 18/Jun/17
My Mum didn't half have the hots for Victor Mature! She allowed us kids to stay up fairly late to watch 'Samson and Delilah', which I found mesmerizing and still do to this day, the acting and the music.
Victor was huge and rippling with muscle in it. I didn't exactly take in his height, other than he was huge and strong, so I will go with 6ft2.5. He could have passed for taller I reckon at that time!
James said on 17/Jun/17
Mature was never more than 6'1".
Arch Stanton said on 4/Mar/17
In After the Fox he looks barely 6 ft with Martin Balsam. Had he lost height by 1966? Though in fairness I think Martin had a little boost in his shoes as you could see his footwear in one scene and a possible small lift. He doesn't look 7 inches taller.

D) 189.5cm/187.5cm

He could pass for a decent 6ft2 at times but 6ft3 did look like a bit of a stretch and 6ft4 is just crazy. I wonder if he actually claimed that..he seemed a bit egotistical

Mature was about three inches shorter than 6-4 Michael Rennie and 6-4 William Marshall in Demetrius and the Gladiators. Watch the last shot where the three walk together abreast.
Arch Stanton said on 18/Apr/16
6'1 flat is too low I agree Rampage. I think overall 187 is the best shout.
Rampage(-_-_-)Clover said on 17/Apr/16
@Arch: First off, I think 6ft1 flat is too low for him. He could have been a fraction under 6ft2 but I wouldn't argue less than this listing. I still lean toward about 6ft2. A guy with a broad frame can look taller than he really is on-screen. I agree, he was most likely a bit shorter than Heston (who was near 6ft3) but bigger boned. Granger probably would have edged him (a strong 6ft2 guy). I mentioned Chris Noth earlier. Some people insist he's at least 6ft3 if not 6ft4! I'm just saying that I can understand why people might get that impression...same thing goes for Mature. He was also described at 6ft4 at times...which is insane. But he was a mesomorph
Arch Stanton said on 28/Mar/16
Rob, might be worth beefing up on some films, try The Robe, The Egyptian, My Darling Clementine, The Las Vegas Story, Affair with a Stranger, Interpol, Kiss of Death and Footlight Serenade.
Granted he looked a strong, well built guy, probably 215-220 pound range at one stage, tbut I'm baffled as to how you ever got 6 ft 3 Rampage. Now a guy like Charlton Heston or Stewart Granger could give the illusion of that at times because Granger either wore lifts as some claimed or his slender frame made him look taller, but Mature was a guy who never looked over 6 ft 2 to me. To me he looked same range as guys like Anthony Quinn and Lee Marvin and more 6'1" range. In fact in some scenes he could look no more than 6 ft 1 flat.
Rampage(-_-_-)Clover said on 26/Mar/16
I was watching Samson & Delilah and he reminded me a lot of Chris Noth. Facially quite alike but also similar height and build. Very broad guy and might have given the illusion of 6ft3 at times (probably was that shoes). Amazing presence on-screen and a virile masculinity that is long extinct today.
Rob, could the 6ft1¾ you had previously be closer?
Rampage(-_-_-)Clover said on 24/Mar/16
Anything less than 6ft1½ is a joke...
Arch Stanton said on 24/Mar/16
@Rampage, Rarely looked it, Ward Bond was taller. Looked 6 ft 1 range in virtually everything I've seen him in. I reckon the 6'2.5 was a shoe measurement.
Rampage(-_-_-)Clover said on 30/Jan/16
I think he was 188cm, personally. He lost out on parts because he was tall.

This 5ft9-10 talk for Mature...when is it gonna end. The man was big and tall. He 🍺 like a 🐟 and 🚬 like a 🏭 but nonetheless he had a magnetic presence on screen and knock out any of today's so-called leading men with one👊. To put it simply, he was the characters he played.
"Victor Mature's height is 6ft 2in (188cm)"
Maximus said on 8/Aug/15
Bottom line....he is a very good height for a leading man and didn't need lifts to appear tall....anything 6' and over is pretty good.
Arch Stanton said on 24/Mar/15
@Rampage When did he ever look 6'3?? I've never seen him look over 6'2. Now a guy like Stewart Granger could look anywhere from 6'1-6'3".

Lol!! Humprhey Bogart 5ft 3.5!!! go look at pics of him with Lauren Bacall who was around 5ft 8, he taller in most pics
Steve said on 19/Mar/15
Hillys,
Bogart was at least 5'7" and Mature was minimum 6'1".
hillus said on 19/Mar/15
In the golden days of Hollywood, it was considered essential that leading actors should appear tall on screen, whether tall or short in reality. Take Humphrey Bogart for instance, he was very short, 5'3 and a 1/2" to be exact, but he always looked much taller on screen.
hillus said on 19/Mar/15
I believe mature to be between 5' 9"" and 5' 10". The poster above has been posed to highlight the length of his legs rather cleverly, but it's obvious that the studio thought he was too short for his width. Yes, 5' 9" is about right.
Rampage(-_-_-)Clover said on 15/Feb/15
Personally, I'd have stuck with the 6ft1¾. The original 6ft2 was also believable. He could look from 6ft1 to 6ft3.
He reminds me a lot of Danny Huston
Rampage(-_-_-)Clover said on 13/Feb/15
Rob, would you argue as low as 185cm for Mature?
Editor Rob
at times he could appear near that mark, other times he could look near 6ft 2...
Arch Stanton said on 12/Feb/15
There's still a few Stewart and Grant films I've not seen but I've seen probably 75% of both of them, it is my intention to watch every single one, but so many films I've been meaning to watch, it's easy to get distracted and forget!
Editor Rob
I've not seen all of either of their output, but most of the major ones.
Arch Stanton said on 12/Feb/15
Jimmy Stewart for me is definitely one of the greatest actors ever, perhaps not quite as talented as somebody like Day Lewis but I literally enjoy him in every film he's in, he makes even some of the more average ones in terms of scripting very good to watch. The pinnacle of his career IMO was Mr Smith Goes to Washington, just fantastic acting. His best film is either Vertigo or Rear Window though I think. Jimmy Stewart and Cary Grant for me probably have the highest rate of great films of all the classic actors.
Arch Stanton said on 12/Feb/15
He did edge out Fonda though so I wouldn't under 6'1.5 for him, somewhere around that 187 mark looks right IMO.
Arch Stanton said on 12/Feb/15
Thanks, I think we finally have him at something more reasonable. You're right though that he could look the full 6'2" at times, but generally he seemed more 6'1" range, in fact in some comparisons he could look as low as 6'1" flat! It was the comparison with Ward Bond in My Darling Clementine which initially made me question the 6'2 I think!
Arch Stanton said on 11/Feb/15
Rob, maybe 6'1.5 would be better for him then if Rennie was just 6'3" flat. 6'2.5 might be a legit shoe measurement. I thought in some scenes the difference looked easily two inches, in others perhaps just 1.5 inches. Something isn't quite right though, not convinced Rennie was 6'3" flat! It is possible though but he looked lankier to me.
Editor Rob
it is possible, look at Victor with
Jimmy Stewart! Ok Mature is 74 but Stewart is like 79 I think there! He held up pretty well into his old age. I re-watched a few Jimmy Stewart Hitchock films recently and forgot how great he was...probably in my top 5 actors of all time.
Arch Stanton said on 11/Feb/15
Thanks Rob, definitely shorter than Ward Bond. It seemed more than 0.25 as that's not really detectable but 187 generally seems more plausible in comparison to others.
Rampage(-_-_-)Clover said on 14/Jan/15
Rob, maybe he was 6ft2½(189cm) out of bed?
Sam said on 9/Jan/15
Agreed on this downgrade...he probably only had half an inch on Henry Fonda in My Darling Clementine. 6'4" is such a crock!
Arch Stanton said on 4/Jan/15
"Mature also encouraged his PR team to diminish his height- listed at 6'2 ½", so he would not be passed over in casting his better than 6'4" frame against less-secure co-stars" is such BS though, if he was 6'4" Michael Rennie was a solid 6'6" er! I really think the 6'2.5 was a genuine shoe measurement.
Arch Stanton said on 4/Jan/15
In some roles like Samson he could look easily 15 stone range, a big built guy. 14 and a half stone is certainly the least I think he could have really been. He probably had to bulk up even more for roles like Samson though to look as big and strong as possible. He really looks nearer 220 pounds in Samson. His boots are suspicious in the film though, really big and heavy, in one scene he actually pulled off looking taller than George Sanders! He had about 5-6 inches on Angela Lansbury when stood his best.
Arch Stanton said on 4/Jan/15
I mean look at
Click Here for instance with 5'10 Maurice Evans!
Arch Stanton said on 4/Jan/15
He does look 6'2" range in the above photo though!
Arch Stanton said on 4/Jan/15
Rob is there any chance of a slight downgrade? He really didn't look a full 6'2" with actors like Ward Bond and Michael Rennie and he doesn't quite look it in Samson and Delilah either. I think you'd be spot on with 187.
Editor Rob
187 is probably a better overall fit.
John said on 29/Sep/14
The 6'4" claim for Mature is a joke, as he was clearly several inches shorter than 6'5" William Marshall in "Demetrius and the Gladiators".
Arch Stanton said on 28/Sep/14
My bad!! It did look like The Robe and Burton and Mature at first glance!
John said on 27/Sep/14

Arch Stanton said on 23/Sep/14
Are you sure on the lifts Sam? I can't see them there
Click Here Burton's feet look flat inside the sandals.
Rob I think you're right on Ward Bond being a flat 6'2 now as I always used Wayne as a solid 6'4 gauge :-). However I really think this listing is a wee bit generous, I always got a more 6'1 range impression, see him with Burton in the above link with Granger for instance
Click Here , and with 6'4" Vincent Price
Click Here I think a 6'1.5" might be more accurate and then assume the 6'2.5" claim was a genuine shoe measurement. He did edge out Fonda but as Sam says it was miniscule. Fonda could look 187 at times himself, but then at others seem 185 tops. Victor definitely looked a bit shorter than Ward though. Only odd thing is that Victor did look a similar height to Sonny Tufts in Easy Living and he's at 6'4" on the database LOL. Maybe he really was 6 ft 4, yeah and Richard Burton not under 6 ft :-)
Editor Rob
6ft 1.5 is possible for Victor
Sam said on 21/Sep/14
Remember Burton was wearing lifts in "The Robe".
Arch Stanton said on 21/Apr/14
Mature actually looked about an inch shorter than Ward Bond in My Darling Clementine Rampage who I think was a proper 189cm guy.
Editor Rob
I looked at Bond and on the football team he was called 6ft 2 in 1928, I mean that's what I'd put him at, maybe Mature himself is adding an inch to his own height.
Arch Stanton said on 20/Apr/14
Agreed Sam, exactly what I was going to say. They looked about the same height, but I think Mature edged him out as you say. Difficult to argue anything over 6'2" flat, especially as Rob now has Fonda at 186.
Sam said on 21/Feb/14
He really didn't look more than 6'2" next to Fonda, a weak half-inch I though was between them in My Darling Clementine.
Rampage(-_-_-)Clover said on 30/Jun/13
They plucked the 6"4" figure out of the sky because he was never anywhere near that. But he was at least 6"2" if not a bit more.
I think 6"2.25"(189cm) might've been his peak
Arch Stanton said on 23/Apr/13
He does actually look 189cm in the above pic though doesn't he.
Editor Rob
around 188 I think is fair for him, I don't think he was over 188
Arch Stanton said on 23/Apr/13
Yeah anything like 6'4" + is a definite joke for him. I'll try yo pick up some older films with him in. My impression of him is 6'1" range next to Michael Rennie and Burton. Now Michael Rennie is how a legit 6'3" range guy looks.
Arch Stanton said on 22/Apr/13
Rob see 13:00 range. Do you think he looks 6'2" next to 5'9.5" Richard Burton?

Shadow2 said on 10/Feb/12
He was 6'1.5" max, maybe slightly shorter. One example, 1955's "Violent Saturday", is his scene with 6' Richard Egan. Because of his large physique, Mature appeared to be much taller in his movies, but the test is when he appears alongside other tall actors of known height. Another example is 1952's "Million Dollar Mermaid", where Mature is in scenes with legit 6'3" David Brian, a noticeably taller actor.

John Wayne was a terrific actor. He deserved an Oscar nomination for his role in THE SEARCHERS.
