Funny Tom seems to be almost
Busting a Gut in some shots from the premiere of their film 7 Psychopaths to match Christopher Walken's height but Walken had clearly shrunk a little from his peak. Maybe Waits was told by someone he looked too short after slouching so much. Tom still can pull off looking near 5'11" range with little height loss considering he was 64 at that point.

Nearly 180cm guy said on 16/Jun/20
Please Rob, add him to the rock singers category.
QM6'1QM said on 7/Mar/20
If Tom is 5'11 then James should be 187 cm on this photo:
Click Here, but we didn't seen their shoes.
What do you think ?!
Editor Rob
Near 6ft 2 there, however it may be more likely James has the boots on.

I don't see Tom as being much over 5' 9" these days. Looking at that last Letterman show (2015) he looks a good inch and a half shorter than George Clooney, despite those big ol' boots - Clooney is in dress shoes. He's put on a few pounds and ditched the hair-dye since then. 70 in December, he is a true American legend, one who seems to occasionally visit us from his parallel reality. We are the better for it.

Might've lost a little height at around 70 now but still a bit taller than Robert Redford in their new movie.
Animus said on 3/Jun/18
Not looking like a six-footer next to Letterman. Around 5'-11' seems fair.
Arch Stanton said on 6/May/16
Mmm getting a good look at him in Down By Law and John Lurie I think would more likely be in 6 ft 3 range. In some scenes he doesn't look nearly 10 inches taller than Benigni. Maybe 6'3.5? Worth looking into.
Arch Stanton said on 6/May/16
No John Lurie Rob? Looks tall in Down By the Law. A lot taller than Tom Waits, so something near 6 ft 4 isn't out of the questionable. Looks a bit like Robert Davi, that long sort of face you get on taller guys.

Tom Waits with the Stones except Jagger. He looks considerably taller but they are pretty old and bent looking.

Here's a photo where he looks taller than Francis Ford Coppola, the latter dropping a little more in posture, even though Coppola wasn't under 5'11" at peak unless De Niro and George Lucas are overlisted.

At any rate, Waits is in my top 5 favorite music artists ever, ranking up there personally for me with Bob Dylan, Johnny Cash, Lou Reed, Neil Young, Ray Davies, Ian McKaye, James Brown, Nick Drake among my favorites.

I honestly always thought he looked really tall. Must have been his skinny/lanky frame.
viennese said on 4/Apr/14
could've been easily 5'11.25 at his peak when standing up straight and not slouching...looked tallish. great musician!!
Bonobo said on 18/Oct/13
I stood next to Tom Waits at a show in the early 90s. He was slouching a bit, in his way, but there's no way he was even 5'10". His smallness was something that struck me right away. Love is music, though!
Joey said on 15/Oct/13
No way. He's always been a good and honest 6'.
Roger said on 7/Dec/12
6' at his peak but 5'11 today
Sam said on 8/Feb/12
Tom looks the same height as Denzel Washington (although maybe closer to the camera):

But shorter than Nicolas Cage (at a disadvantageous camera position):

Well, he is not 5'11'' nowadays. Maybe he has shrank a lot during the years.
Llama said on 17/Apr/11
I think he's 6' flat. He always looks that when he stands up straight.
Sam said on 24/Jan/11
At times, Waits can look near 6 feet, such as next to David Letterman (in a clip, you can see a slouchy Waits isn't much shorter than Letterman) and at other times shorter, such as next to Nicholas Cage (in a picture in Waits' Orphans album with Cage, Waits looks to be 5'9"). He probably was indeed 5'11" with (nearly unseen) good posture and at his peak.
Martyr said on 23/Jan/11
alexfox you're COMPLETELY WRONG. Thomas G. Waites played in the Warriors, he has nothing to do with the great Tom Waits, who didn't look that much shorter than John Lurie (who's listed at 6.4 and a half) in Down By Law.

Don't forget his cowboy boots.

Oohhh, The Warriors, good flick...
alexfox said on 19/Jan/08
yeah, i think around 5'10-5'11 because he starred in the warriors in 79 as fox, but james reemar who played ajax said he was only 5'10. Waits didnt look much taller that that, maybe even smaller.. or even close to 6'0-1 michael beck
RICHARD said on 16/Dec/06
He is either 5'11 or 6' but yeah that posture of his is pretty bad. He isn't over 6' or under 5'11.
Brad said on 5/Nov/06
Nobody knew in the 70's cause he was flat on his face or 88's after getting his Liquor Locker" delivery. I loved that store in Hollywood. I can't even remember his height 30 years ago when I saw him....he even sat sideways. Weird dude.
ellen said on 20/Oct/06
tom wait's child sullivan goes to my school and i see him there quite often, i would say he's more like 5' 10"

His posture looks pretty horrendous, though.
Glenn said on 23/Jul/06
6ft is possible back in the day.seemed 5-11 tops.
Mr. T said on 23/Jul/06
He's listed at 6', maybe 20 years ago?
Jack said on 12/Jul/06
When this guy stands up straight.... I thought he could be 6'3. He looks very tall because of his slim build. 5'11.5 to 6'0 I'd say.
