Thomas Mitchell was more like 5'6 at most. His head comes to the eye brows of 5'10 actors.

The shot with Stewart is not equal footing because we can't see their feet.
The second one with Grant shows Mitchell's right foot elevated.
I've watched nearly every movie he was in. It's apparent to me he couldn't have been 5'9".

I'm familar with some of these pictures but some of them are useless practically for height comparison, with Stewart probably standing a few feet closer to the camera. Do you understand that it makes Stewart look bigger?

Ronald Colman was no more than 5'8".
If you watch the film he's in with Andrews, you'll see he's a good two inches shorter. The movie is dreadful. It's called When the City Sleeps. Hard to believe Fritz Lang directed it.

He is slouching w/ Andrews & Sanders and is further away from the camera w/ Power and Tracy, but I'd agree at times he could look more a 5'9" guy. His posture didn't help but it's hard to compare when Power could be a few feet closer to the camer than Mitchell. 5'8" range is too low though!

Leo McCarey is a rather underrated director, like an under the radar auteur, that is he was by everyone but himself. He claimed to have more or less invented Cary Grant!

Make Way for Tomorrow is one of my favourite films of the 30s. The last 30 minutes are really incredibly beautiful. Should have won the Oscar for best film or at least best Director, even the director was annoyed he won it for The Awful Truth and not that film! I saw the film like many others before I really knew who Mitchell was!

Rob, speaking of great films (Lost Horizon) Jane Wyatt is missing. She had a few good roles like that, Task Force, Great Expectations, Gentleman's Agreement, The Man Who Cheated Himself etc. Do you have a listing in a book? 5 ft 5 range might be OK, Sam?

A great filmography for Mitchell...you already have ten but I wanted to make an honorable mention of Make Way for Tomorrow where he was quite good as one of the adult siblings befuddled as to what to do with their elderly parents.
