That documentary last night COULDN’T HAVE BEEN MORE ABSORBING. The contributions from the stars who’d worked with him were fabulous, and oftentimes, they were thoroughly amusing. My word, Peter was very tall and attractive, and married to Sian Philips.
He has a handsome son and, from what I could gather, two daughters. His son, Lorcan, looks tall as well.

I’m really looking forward to the Sky Arts special on Peter O’Toole, with contributions from Stephen Fry, Brian Blessed and Brian Cox, amongst others.
6ft2. 🕯
Sinclair said on 30/Apr/22
@Rampage: I concur that Peter O’Toole was 6’2” minimum and probably over it, because Timothy Dalton was 6’1.5” minimum and O’Toole had at least half an inch on him in The Lion in Winter, possibly 0.75 inches. Moreover, Dalton had faultless posture but O’Toole slouched in that film.
I reckon O’Toole and George Bush Sr. are the two strongest 6’2” celebrities listed on this site.

Very well-known in France. Appeared with O'Toole in two movies; The Night of The Generals

O’Toole had a great innings and was probably a real deal 6’2”. I reckon he held the edge over Timothy Dalton in The Lion In Winter, remember that O’Toole often practiced a slouching posture, the opposite of Dalton.

Saw "The Stunt Man" on TV last night. I'd like to know if O'Toole was wearing a wig in that film? His part kept shifting to one side and then the other throughout the film which made it look unnatural. Also, I never perceived of him having really thick hair, as in this film.
Rampage(-_-_-)Clover said on 20/Sep/21

Scott, no offence to your mother but she clearly was having problems with her eyesight if she really thought O'Toole was 5ft6!
Scott Busfield said on 18/Mar/21
My mother watched him on stage late in his career from the second or third row and she swore that, on no account, was he taller than 5'6" at that time, and probably shorter. She was devastated. I have found almost everyone in Hollywood, especially the men, lie about their height because, as a group, beautiful people tend to be smaller. Great actor though.
Brian Sullivan said on 17/Feb/21
I believe near the end of his life O'Toole may well have been down to around 6 feet or shorter.
I was 185cm in my mid twenties but at 75 years of age am now around 180cm due to the slow collapsing of my spinal cartilages.
This is normal as we age and O'Toole certainly aged badly in his seventies.
A fine actor all the same and it is sad to see those great actors of the fifties , sixties and seventies are now dying off rapidly.
Rampage(-_-_-)Clover said on 5/Oct/20
Rob, could you add Arthur Kennedy?
Listed 5ft10 in places but maybe more 5ft9 range? Many won’t know who he is but he played Jackson Bentley in Lawrence and was actually nominated for five academy awards in the 50’s that including Bright Victory as lead actor, best support in Champion (w/h Kirk Douglas), Peyton Place (w/h Lana Turner) and Some Came Running (w/h Sinatra and Dean Martin). Oddly enough his best known work were none of these roles but instead Bend of The River and The Man From Laramie w/h Jimmy Stewart. You got most of the most of LOA stars

Hello, RM Phillips. Yes it is true that Peter O'Toole is dead but he was a movie star, so he lives on in our imaginations after his death. Movie stars are more than just people. The movies make them like people we actually know, and they don't age. We don't have to trust our memories of how they looked and spoke when they were young, because we can watch their movies. At least half the entries I consult on Celebrity Heights are listings for actors who are now dead.
Albert Finney was the first choice to play Lawrence and would have been much better than O'Toole. (Who postures and overacts in what would otherwise have been one of the best movies ever made.)
O'Toole kept getting nominated (but never winning) for an Oscar for Best Actor. He was like Richard Burton in that regard. That is, he was a Brit who had done Shakespeare on the London stage, which means to some people that he must have been a great actor. If he was in a fairly good movie, he would get nominated to fill out the field of Best Actor candidates. Americans are suckers for actors with posh accents, while at the same time refusing to understand the skill and talent of their own stars, like Cary Grant or John Wayne or Robert Mitchum.
Miss Sandy Cowell said on 2/Aug/19

Maybe O'Toole didn't look anything like Lawrence but that's nearly always the case in movies based on true stories. Actors tend to be much better looking and in this case significantly taller than the characters they play were in reality. Of course there are equally good looking people in 'normal' jobs but actors get parts to a large extent based on physical appearance. As for his height 6'2'' seems a decent bet.
William_O'Jell said on 13/Apr/19
He was not born in Ireland but was of Irish extraction on his fathers side. So he was indeed Irish by lineage. I believe he was very close to 6 feet 2.
RM Phillips said on 11/Feb/19
Peter O'Toole was an amazingly eccentric actor. He had a way of capturing your attention on screen and on the stage. I was a very young man when I saw him in Macbeth at The Old Vic in 1980. Naturally, I had seen him as T.E. Lawrence in Lawrence of Arabia, and though he did not resemble Lawrence, I thought he made the film the great film that it was. As far as being miscast, I doubt there was any actor who could have performed the role adequately.
Being 6'2" myself, I presumed him to be the same height as I am, based on his height in The Lion in Winter next to Timothy Dalton and being eye to eye with him.
As far as I know he was of "Irish descent", though he did go to some lengths to hold himself out as Irish. I can't see that it matters that much as everything else he did was rather eccentric and a bit odd. Also, being Native American and having hundreds of thousands of European Americans holding themselves out as being Native American, if we can tolerate this outrage, the Irish can stand having such a superb actor pretending to be Irish. Particularly since so many Irish Americans claim to be Native American.
Since he is deceased now, does it really make a difference at this point?

Richard and mister Lennon you two are complete idiots
First Peter did not ruin Lawrence and in no way shape or form was he over hammy in his performance. I realise you are comparing him to Albert Finney, who is also an outstanding actor, as Albert was originally due to play Lawrence, he was probably also more accurate in height however as for acting both Peter and Albert were exceptionally powerful actors
Second Sir Peter was born in Leeds, he wasn't born in Ireland, his son Lorcan was born in Dublin, Peter's father Patrick was also born in Ireland.
I have never read such nonsense as Peter didn't resemble T.E Lawrence, apart from the height he closely resembled Thomas Lawrence, the length of face, the eyes and thick mouth, however he was absolutely nothing like Marlon, what garbage..

Interestingly, he was at least two inches taller than Charles Gray in The Night of the Generals. (Charles Gray looked taller than Sean Connery in You Only Live Twice.) It is possible that O'Toole wore lifts in his Nazi officer's boots for that film. In any case, I would place this legendary actor at around 6'2.25.

For Your Eyes Only, Repulsion, The Wrong Box, The Scarlet Pimpernel (1982), The Ruling Class and Asylum and a few of those 60s TV series like Man in a Suitacase, The Baron and The Avengers. The Ruling Class is well worth watching fully, really quite funny. You'll see what I mean about O'Toole in some scenes looking over 6'2. With Villiers clearly nothing over it though, in fact he can look 187 with him in some scenes.
Arch Stanton said on 28/Feb/16
Tallest I've seen him look is in The Ruling Class. He walked about in that film as a guy in 6'3-6'4 range. It might have been the white suit and a generally short cast which made him look towering. I think the butler in it (Arthur Lowe) and some of the others were pretty short which made him look very tall in it. It was only James Villiers (the 6'4 guy I mentioned) who made O'Toole look nothing over 6 ft 2.

O'Toole was most likely around 6 ft., 6'1 with shoes - he was known to be incredibly skinny which made him appear taller. Sian Phillips (his wife of 20 years) is quoted in his most recent biography, "...all 6 feet of him." If anyone honestly knew, I'd imagine it be her. The couple that lives next door to me also met him at an event not too long ago and mentioned how he was shorter than they initially imagined. The husband is 6'4, the wife probably a little under 5'10. Considering the beating his body took over his miraculous long life, I'm sure he lost a couple inches over time.

By gollies, John, you're right. Peter O'Toole really was English. He was probably born in Leeds, and was certainly raised there. O'Toole was such a phony that he always implied to people he met that he was Irish. He always wore green socks, for example, and told everybody some claptrap about how this was to remind him of his Irish heritage.
I wonder how may other actors, who pretend to be other people for a living, pretend to be other people when they're not actually working. I saw a documentary about James Dean one time, made while he was filming Giant, in which he plays a country boy from Texas, and in the documentary he gave an interview as James Dean, but wearing a cowboy hat and boots and speaking with a Texas accent. Didn't he realize how silly he looked?
Ian C said on 4/Nov/14
Actually Sam, you can see Peter O'Toole's natural nose and teeth in Walt Disney's version of Kidnapped. And his hair in that movie is brown. You can also find a picture of O'Toole in the cast of the stage production of The Long and the Short and the Tall, with his original nose and hair. Also, O'Toole's autobiography, Loitering With Intent, has pictures of the pre-Lawrence, unaltered young O'Toole. He was actually a good-looking guy. Better-looking, I would say, than the blond, nose-bobbed Toff he pretended to be.
He is now dead, and he certainly took his time about getting that way. If ever a man should have died young of his vices, O'Toole was that man. God must love drunkards after all.

Peter O'Toole never misrepresented his height. He misrepresented everything else. He was a dark-haired Irishman with a beaky nose, but after he had his big hit with Lawrence of Arabia, he just kept the Lawrence character for his own whenever he was out in public. Peter O'Toole walked around pretending to be a blond, upper class Englishman who had been born with a small nose. He just kept acting after the cameraman had gone home. They say he's dead, but it wouldn't surprise me to learn that he's been faking that. But yeah, he was six feet two, whenever he was sober enough to stand up.

I've looked it up, and T.E. Lawrence was roughly five foot four. Peter O'Toole resembled Lawrence about as much as he resembled Winston Churchill so, from the standpoint of strict historical accuracy, he was wildly miscast.
Ian C. said on 16/Feb/14
A few posters have asked why O'Toole looks short in Lawrence of Arabia. Possibly this was due to a conscious effort to make him better resemble the real T.E. Lawrence, who was a much shorter, stouter man than O'Toole. Richard Burton always said that O'Toole was six foot three, but then Burton probably lied about everybody's heights in the service of lying about his own.

In his autobiography, Loitering With Intent: The Apprentice, there is a picture of him, aged nineteen, which lists his weight as 13 stone 7 pounds (189 pounds) and his height as 5 feet 10 inches. He must have had a growth spurt after the picture was taken.
Zach said on 1/Mar/11
He looked within half an inch to one inch max of Eric Bana in Troy so 6'2 sounds right.

Editor Rob
yeah but can't remember any heights or anything from films I saw 15 years ago :)

In the movie King Ralph (have you seen it rob?) Peter O'Toole was a good 1 inch shorter than 6'2 (188cm) John Goodman and peter was 58 back in 1991 when that film was made so he can't have lost that much height when he was that age.
I remmember as well that Frank2 did not belive he was 6'2 more like 6'1.
Rob do you think there is a possiblity Peter O'Toole was 6'1 at his peak rather than 6'2? to me he looked 184cm in comparison to goodman.
Editor Rob
yes there is a chance of that, I saw that movie once
Rampage(-_-_-)Clover said on 19/Dec/10
186cm could possible nowadays Rob?
Editor Rob
5 years ago I thought he was maybe 6ft 1, but today...he might not be over 6 foot
Frank2 said on 9/Jul/09
I've seen O'Toole in person. Stood right next to him. He appears to look a lot taller than he really is simply because he's a stick. I doubt he weighs any more than 150 lbs. I saw him in the 1980s and he looked to be slightly over six feet so 6'1" was probably his peak height.
Hugh 191cm said on 7/Jul/09
Clearly taller than Letterman. 6ft2 at least. 190cm-191cm peak.

And O`toole didnt really tower over McDowell in CALIGOLA. The difference seemed to be like five inches max and more likely four. A horrible film by the way!
adam said on 1/Apr/09
O`toole didnt look over 6-2 in Lawrence Of Arabia. More likely 6-1 or just slightly more. He was a very skinny man which made him look taller.

Check the 1964 film Becket (great movie). Peter O'Toole stars with Richard Burton, the height difference seemed to only be around 2-3 inches between them. If Richard Burton was 177-178cm, then O'Toole should have been around 183-185cm, unless Burton used some lifts...?
Hugh said on 12/Jan/09

Yep - Alistair Cooke ('America' Masterpiece Theatre etc.) went from 6'1" peak to 5'7" in his nineties. This is stated in his official biography, which says he really hated that he had shrunk so much.

In his younger days maybe 6ft3. He still looks impressively tall. 6ft2-6ft2.25 now.
Absolutely not. In Becket he was 2-3 inches taller than 5'10 Richard Burton and in Lawrence of Arabia he was 2 inches taller than 5'10-5'11 Omar Sharif. With poor posture he could look almost even with Sharif. He does look taller due to his thin physique, but to me he looks much more like a 6'1, 6'1 and change guy than a 6-2-6'3. I doubt he could match a Charlton Heston or Jimmy Stewart. 6'1 or a little over.

What's scary is that Peter was on David Letterman in the mid 90's and had a full inch on then 6'2" Dave. Now, fast forward a dozen years and Peter comes walking out and Dave is at least 2" taller than Peter. The man was ONCE a full 6'3", but today is lucky if he is 6'0". Scary how age can do such damage.

Now I know you're simply a joker who wishes to disrupt this forum. Forget that Guinness was 5'7". He was quite bald. He was as bald as John Wayne. And he was a lot shorter. A LOT SHORTER!
And many Stars Wars fans need to get a life.

Frank2 said on 21/Apr/06
I firts met Guinness back in the 1960's then later after he appeared in Star Wars. He was the same height both times. I met Laurence Olivier at a special screening of A Little Romance in 1979. Olivier had been 5'10" when he was younger and by the time of the screening he looked around 5'9". James Mason who I knew and was a good friend of my parents always remained a solid 5'11". I stood right next to him as we spoke when he appeared at the Motion Picture Acadmey's Samuel Goldwyn Theater for a screening of Odd Man Out. We were
eye-to-eye the exact, same height. And by then he was well into his seventies. That was only six months before he passed away.
Frank2 said on 21/Apr/06
Ferrer who I met was 5'9". I'm 5'11" and I was at least two inches taller. And Guinness who I also met was no more than 5'7". I towered over him. Check out the photo of me with Jeff Kramer on his thread. Kramer's 5'8" and Guinness was shorter. Now tell me I'm 6'1" so I can have a good laugh. I need one.

what year did you meet Guinness Frank2. The question is if he shrank by a few inches, in Arabia did he really look like a 5ft 8 guy?
For sure the guy in early 1980 did look to be short, on his page here I mention a picture of him looking shorter than Eric Morecamble and a little bigger than Ernie wise...who himself was in the 5ft 5ish range...

By the way, as luck would have it I was just talking to a friend who knew Goulet and he says Robert is about 5'9" and when on stage or in films wears huge lifts. That explains why Burton is taller in that photo. I still think Peter O'Toole was never 6'2". I will go with 6'1" when he was younger. I do remember back when Lawrence of Arabia came out that at least one article cited "a six foot tall O'Toole is miscast as a 5'4" Lawrence." Originally David Lean wanted 5'10" Albert Finney to play Lawrence. He was even tested in costume for the part, but somehow O'Toole won out. Perfect visual casting would have been 5'7" Alec Guinness. And please don't try to make me believe he was 5'10". I met him and he was extremely short next to me. Here's a shot of the real T.E. Lawrence:
Click HereNow compare him with Guinness:
Click Here Actually Guinness did play the enigmatic character in a stage production done in England.

Frank2,
No way was Peter O'Toole that short. He came on Letterman and was like an inch to an inch and a half taller than Dave. If you're claiming that O'Toole was only 6foot then I guess Dave was 5'10.5.
Mr. R said on 6/Feb/06
PAT I agree. O'Toole wsas great in the Lawrence movie. However, stars are often chosen to play real figures even if their height is not the same...Joaquin Phoenix, Jamie Foxx, Phillip Seymour Hoffman, etc. Also, while O'Toole deserved the OScar that year, it was hard not to deny Gregory Peck's career performance in To Kill A Mockingbird!
dmeyer said on 6/Feb/06

PAT said on 5/Feb/06
The real T.E.Lawrence wasn't much above 5'5", so when Peter O'Toole, during the filming of "Lawrence of Arabia", met one of the old Beduoins who had served with T.E. in WW1 as a youngster, the old fellow was upset that O'Toole was so much taller at 6'2" or 6'3". I'm 5'2" usually--5'4" on really good days! And I cannot imagine anyone else playing that role with the same talent and class that Peter O'Toole had. I'm still burned that he didn't receive an Oscar for it.
Tubbs said on 3/Jan/06
Saw Lawrence of Arabia the other day. I was looking to see if O'Toole was really the 6'3 he has been described as. At first I thought there was no chance, but then it struck me that the British officers he was with were all tall guys themselves. Hawkins was about 6'1, Quayle was 6'1, and couple that with thick soled army boots, makes them even taller. O'Toole only wore sandals in most of his scenes, and didn't have the best posture, so maybe this is why he didn't seem to tower over co stars like you would expect a 6'3 guy to.

I'm not sure, I think he looked just a solid 6'1'' without even taking into account others in the film. What you say would explain why so many British officers were around his height, though. But I do recall when he was captured by the Turks, that Turkish general (who was a decent height) walked over to him and sized him up and his men were amused by how much taller Lawrence was. So, if they were trying to de-emphasize his height, it wouldn't have made sense for them to have done that scene. Was the real Lawrence only about 5'6''? In the special features of the DVD it said the real Lawrence towered above the arabs. Or maybe they meant 0'Toole? I can't remember lol.
John said on 10/Nov/05
Compared to the 5'10 Sir Alec Guinness, 6'2 would sound right for O'Toole.
