183.5-184cm peak is highly plausible and woke up at 6ft1. You put a guy like that in a moderately heeled pair of shoes and he's easily nudging 6ft2.

I think Ford would have the edge on Nolte though despite what people think, chance of weak 185cm. Harrison has definitely lost more height Nick though

I do agree with Tall Ssm, as I said before I think he was measured 6’0/183cm and he claim what who made the measurement told him he was...at times he was listed 6’1 because in his mugshot there was written 6’1 on his plastic sheet and I am sure if he claimed 6’1 than nobody had questioned.
I think today at age of 79 he has lost a good amount even because I think he has some problem on his back...please look at his recent picture and you will se his posture is very bad like someone who’s affected by something at his back. Next to Gerard Butler and Morgan Freeman he looks a shrimp so with a great chance today he’s under 5’11 and maybe much closer to 5’10. I think 5’10.5 is a stretched measurement

In Cape Fear, Nolte slimmed down quite a bit to make it feasible that the notably shorter and slighter De Niro (himself bulked up with muscle) would be physically threatening to him, I think it makes Nolte look a little lankier than usual in the film.

Nick did look really tall in 'Cape Fear', in fact I would have guessed him to be a whisker over 6ft. I haven't seen him in anything recently though, so I will have to go with the flow and estimate him to be 5ft11 nowadays and a peak height of 6ft0.25.

Editor Rob: I think there was more like 3 inches between them, of course Nolte was probably not a guy who dropped under 6ft, arguably a little bit over during the day.

Rob you need to keep in mind that in all 2 movies Nick Nolte wears a pair of cowboy boots which gifts him i think at least 1,5" but maybe even 2".
This explain because Nolte, expecially in the first movie, gives a tall impression of a 6'1-1,5" guy...of course in the picture which you posted he has a small shoes advantage and even the camera angle is good for him...
However i agree about he was a honest 6' at peak.

Just watched 48 Hrs again. He was definitely wearing lifts in some scenes. His walk was off, as well as his posture. In one scene, he looked not much shorter than Frank McRae, who was about 6'6. McRae looked four inches taller than Timothy Dalton in Licence to Kill.

He could make Eddie Murphy and Robert De Niro look closer to 5'8" at times, but I think Nolte is as aware of his height as you can be judging by these quotes since he even knows he can look taller. He's been consistent as well. An honest claim looks taller, but I think it's more likely we're overestimating others rather than someone who has no reason to lie being taller than they claim. The boots, which Nolte mentions himself, explain the rest. I'd give Harrison Ford 183.5 cm peak and Nolte 183. Eddie Murphy is probably 176 cm, but could also be a flat 5'9" as his height can vary. De Niro was probably somewhere from 174-175 cm. I'd like to watch Mulholland Falls again since Nolte wore lifts in that film so I'm interested in how tall he could pass for, especially with Chazz Palminteri.

Nowadays, he's not that tall. I don't even think he's 5'11" anymore. Bruce Willis could look taller than him over a decade ago and Bruce probably wasn't taller than 5'11" flat by that point, or he'd be 181 cm absolute max. He doesn't really look that much taller than 5'9" Robert Redford these days either. I think he's about 5'10.5" now. I mean, he is in his mid 70s. But it's tougher judging height when people age because posture becomes a pretty major variable.

yeah this one i will not stop comment on. to me nick nolte is someone that neds 1/4 inch upgrade in the same way as harrison ford need 1/4 downgrade. The height difference beetween those two in my eyes are not more than 1/4 of one inch. Of course nick nolte often looked taller in movies than harrison ford but as he said he always had boots on. but still he managed to look 185-187 in some movies with boots on. an boots makes you 2 cm taller than would make him taller than 183 still. i think he said 6 feet to point out that he want 6 foot 2 like everybody thought he was. but was little over 6 feet in his prime. he looked tall if you are only 6 feet tall tou dont look tall in my eyes

Click Here in this interview you can se on his arrest in the 60´s that he was listed 6 foot 1 and 195 pounds around 4 min 30 sekunds i dont think he was 185 cm tall but he is a guy that in some way lokked a little taller than just 6 feet to me. i think he was 184 and got listed as 185 in that arrest and when he was arreasted at age of 62 he was listed at 6 feet and was probably that height at that age and now he is around 180cm.

Actually James the real match is bertween a strong and flat 6' for him, in my opinion.
I doubt he was ever even a weak 6'1" considering for his own admission he wore lifts.
At first Eddie Murphy is more 5'9 than 5'10 (rob listed him at 5'9.25 but I guess he's a flat 5'9) and second he wore cowboy boots in that movies which gave him probably 2" so he seems 6'1-1.5" in that movie instead a strong 6'.

I think back in the day his height fluctuated between 6' 0" (1.83 m) and 6' 0.75" (1.85 m) throughout the day which would in part explain why he was percieved as 6' 1". Nowadays he's 6' 0" (1.83 m) morning and 5' 11.25" (1.81 m) evening.

I am tremendously impressed with Nolte's honesty in admitting that he always wears boots that jack up his height - something I commented on three or four years ago. His awareness of being taller in the morning is also interesting. I agree that he is now exactly 5'11.5", but I was wrong about his not looking particularly tall in "Rich Man, Poor Man". I friend of mine and I are working our way through the entire mini-series - and what a gloriously nostalgic thing it is - but I must say that Nolte looks much taller than I remember him looking. I also think Nolte could have been an even bigger star than he has been - for example he was considered for the lead in Rambo, and would have given the character much more depth than the pouting, grunting, brain-damaged Neanderthal whacko that Stallone created.

Usually appeared to look about 6'1" in movies from the 70's and 80's. Although, if I remember correctly, he was noticeably shorter than William Smith who played Falconetti in Rich Man Poor Man. I have seen Smith listed at 6'2" . Could Nolte have been a little bit under 6'1" ? I can't really see him being anything over 6'1", even when younger. Maybe Nolte did wear lifts in some of his movies. As Bob said on Sept. 26th on this page, Nolte was wearing some sort of cowboy boots in 48 hours. I haven't seen "North Dallas Forty" for several years but I think I remember Nolte looking in the 6'0"-6'1" range as opposed to 6'1"-6'2" range.

In 48hrs he looked taller than most men (significantly in some cases) so I have no problems believing he was a solid 6'1 in his youth.

6'0 nowadays sounds quite like what i've estimated.

Nick is was a huge guy. The one time I saw him in person I was shocked at how tall he was, but more importantly, how big boned he was. I'd say peak height was at least 6'1". These days? Who knows? This is a man who's been through hell, come back, gone back to hell and returned.

The Fabrizzio guy, shoemaker to the stars, syays that he had to make special shoes for Nolte to wear in the Mulholland movie, because his costars were all above 6 feet, and he was only 5-11.

rob and everyone-you should take that post as serious cause he always looked 6-3 to me in dress shoes in the early 90s.the 6ft claims were so much,i doubted myself and suspected lifts.

I saw Nolte about 1992 or 1993 in a supermarket near his home on Point Dume, Malibu, California. He was wearing plastic frame glasses, had bad skin (most actors do from the long hours of makeup), and wore flat sandals. He came in to buy some chewing gum and acted very nervous. He stood in line right behind me. I was so surprised...he was huge ! I stand 5 ft. 9 barefoot and about 5 ft. 10 in sneakers. He was at least 5 inches taller than me, putting him at 6 ft. 3 or taller in sandals that couldn't have boosted his height more than one inch. So, barefoot I think he stood 6 ft. 2 or better. A tall dude...

Yes James, but Nolte was wearing Cowboy boots which give him 2" in height at least, Murphy is a small margin above 5'9" and looked about 3" shorter than him. Maybe he was a strong 6ft in his prime but looked about 5'10 1/2" in Hotel Rwanda.

His peak should be at least 6' 0.5 or even 6'1, not just 6'0. His arrest sheet lists him at 6'0 because that is what he is now, not at his peak though which is shown in countless movies.

He looked huge in 48 hrs...... Atleast 6'1 and looked 6'2 in the cowboy boots he wore..... He sure looked it next to 5'9 ish eddy murphy..... He may be closer to 6' now but his peak was definetly 6'1.

Glenn, I could live with 5'10.5" - 5'11". The point of my little essays was that I've always smelled a "lifts rat" with Nolte and it looks like I might have been right. But surely he's taller than Ed Asner by more than a bit, so they probably put Asner on wooden blocks (his feet are out of frame) to make him seem more physically intimidating for the scene I described below. But the impression of height Nolte projected in "U-Turn " must be put into context - most of the scenes are played against Sean Penn and Jennifer Lopez - neither of them have enough height to challenge Nolte. Glenn, I know you've visited with Penn, but 5'8.5" just has to be wrong - this guy cannot be over 5'7", and yes, you are quite right, he can act - rent "The Falcon and the Snownman" if you've never seen it before.

Also from "Rich Man - Poor Man" is an intense scene where Ed Asner as Nolte's tyrannical father storms into the bedroom where Nick is playing being high school-aged and is making a ruckus when he's supposed to be asleep. Asner strides over to him and slaps his face hard. Nolte pauses, contemplating retaliation and Asner snarls "Lift a hand to me and I'll break your arm." Nolte is in his bare feet and is really not much taller than the 5'7" Asner.

I have always suspected Nolte, whom I'm liked since "Rich Man - Poor Man", of wearing lifts. In RMPM, one observes the "before stardom" phenomenon - Nick is humiliated in a sparring session by the taller, quicker George Maharis, who plays an up-and-coming mob-financed boxer. Later Nick gets to rearrange the guy's face in a seedy motel room brawl, but the point is Maharis had no more than eight inches on Judy Garland appearing on her show back in the Route 66 days, and she must have been wearing heels, as she was all of 4'11", a height never questioned by anyone.

All this stayed with me as I watched Nolte pull a Brad Pitt - he'd already gotten suspiciously taller even by "48 Hrs." (1982) being way more above Eddie Murphy than he should have been. As I said I like Notle, but have been meaning to do a little corrective surgery on his height - he is one of these actors with whom one simply must take advanced footwear into consideration. "Prince of the Tides" has him barefoot after an opening flashback, and surrounded by his little daughters, who giganticize him, it's still clear we're not looking at a six-foot tall man.

He probably wears lifts. I saw a movie with him and Gene Hackman and Nolte looked taller to my surprise. However, he looked shorter than Travolta in Red thin line and Travolta looked a couple of inches shorter than Hackman in another film. Tricky situations. Height is a mystery. Lifts too.

I've read he comes from a very tall family. His sister is 6'4'' and he's got uncles who are like 6'7''. The usual height given for him is 6'1'' which in his prime seems accurate. He was not a small guy.
