Actually, I properly read both the recently linked articles and an additional article I found in Vanity Fair.
There's only one line (not a quote) that flatly states Crichton, "Big Mike", to have been 6'7" by 13. Otherwise, it was stated that his height began to become a problem for him beginning at age 13 when he was already over 6 feet. A former coach also stated that Crichton was over 6'5" as sophomore. Finally, in one of the articles it was stated that Crichton was 6'7" just prior to starting at Harvard. I was a bit skeptical that he was so tall by 13 and it appears that claim was either deliberate hyperbole or an accidental mash up of facts.
Also, my bad, I lazily drew on just one source for Shaq's height at age 12. Elsewhere I have now read he was 5'10" at 12, 6'7" at 16 and 7'1" by age 21. Okay, not so close to Wadlow, even at age 12. Also, by 16, Wadlow was already a dizzying 7'10". :)

@Tall: we mentioned living as Wadlow for a day at his peak height but living that way at 11-12 had to be just as hard if not harder Before normal puberty lol. That had to have been brutal with the stares, the clothes doorways etc especially at the mercy of his family.

@Editor Rob: could be a variety of factors or a combination of them. Late Growth in college, measuring at a morning height when he got the 6’9 or almost 6’9” or (less likely) him claiming his shoes. I’d say his afternoon height had a very good chance at a sub 6’9” but how much is the question. He’s never quite struck me as the full 6’9” but I could see something like 204-205 (6’8.5-.75) range like Vincent also mentioned. At that height, you’re at the mercy of camera angle and lots of other things in order to properly determine it. You rarely see anyone close in height with him to compare him to. And him saying he’s “almost 6’9” could mean what Vincent, Junior, and others have said

I've read Shaq was supposed to be 6'6" at 12. For further perspective, due to his rate of growth and then current height, Robert Wadlow was first examined at age 11 years 11 months, basically 12 yo. He measured an exact 208 cm, a shade under 6'10". Though, by 13 yo, Wadlow had pushed further to 7'2". At least for a small window of time, at around the same age, Shaq and Crichton wouldn't have been as dwarfed by Wadlow as much as everyone else in Wadlow's general age group.

I am going to say he could be as low as 6’8.5” afternoon and as high as 6’9”. The picture with cage and Connery he looks huge. Gigantic. I struggle to even see him 6’8” flat. I find it easy to think he grew. If there is going to be a person that grows after high school, it would be someone of his height. I also don’t know how accurate that measurement was. If it was at the combine, then I would take it a lot more seriously. Also, look at the date of his season. He was 19 at the time, and if he was measured even before that, then he definitely could have grown.

The Harvard figure comes from a conversation we had in person circa 1993, and the cancer figure comes from his autopsy, which I accessed as par the course of a legal procedure undertaken on behalf of the beneficiaries of his estate.

Out of interest, do you think he's the tallest celebrity whose fame isn't related to his height? When you get close to or beyond the 7ft mark every celebrity is either a basketball player or another sport where height is useful, wrestler or actor who made it playing giants or monsters.

I heard somebody say they met him in an elevator in NYC and said "they were dumbstruck by his sheer height they forgot to say hello". They said "he had to bend his head at 90 degrees to fit through the door. 6'9" is an astounding height and pretty much matched by his intellectual superiority too. I've met him, my uncle Charles "Chip" Kidd did the jacket design for Jurassic Park for him. I'm 6'10" and he's the only person I've ever met as tall as me. It felt nice to know tall people can be successful too.
