This page is actually one of the few where I disagree with Rob by as much as a half inch. But to say ANYONE wouldn't get one out of more than 9,000 correct, much less someone who does this for a living is laughable. I think you'd have to try to guess 9,000 heights wrong. Of course, nobody could get all 9,000 completely accurate either, which is why some listings change over time or need a second look.

I believe comparing to other men in the 5'9" range tells us about how tall Mel is more than anything with the possible exception of Sigourney's word: Click Here Without deviating from Rob's listings at all you have Mel edged by 5'9" Anthony Hopkins, then looking about an inch shorter than 5'9.25" Kurt Russell and then clearly shorter than 5'9.5" guys Geoffrey Lewis and Chris Cooper. When you see them all together, it's hard to see Mel anything over 5'9" flat as all were indoor scenes and not the only scenes Mel looked shorter in.

Btw, this article struck me as funny in one respect: Click Here It says "Mel Gibson, reported to be 5ft 8in", which is funny because papers like that one or the Daily Mail are the ones who most frequently report him to be that height, much like they do with Cruise at 5'7". They act like that's some consensus when estimates for all these guys vary. It'd be more objective to say something like "Mel Gibson, who claims 5ft 10in" and if they feel necessary add something like "but is reportedly smaller." Sort of like the Bond article that listed him 5'8" as though it were his official height, just like people erroneously believe Cruise only claims 5'7". Btw, as much as I like Mel, I can honestly picture Glenn doing something like what Norman claims Mel did. Particularly the "see, told you" part. But I really think the media helped make both Mel and Tom more height conscious because if you look at their early career, they really didn't seem to care much.

@Greg: I can see why you'd guess 5'8.5", but I think proportions can be a bit misleading as Mel has relatively short legs and he's bulked up to about 190 pounds as he's gotten older. Now if you think he was a weak 5'9" or fell just short of the mark then I have to admit I was thinking that for a while, particularly with Mel really looking slightly shorter than Anthony Hopkins to me, though I can say they may have been the same overall. But I think he can seem genuinely taller and overall think the full 5'9" is most likely. For instance, Mel looked to edge out Richard Gere a few years back even considering Gere often slouches while Mel holds consistently good posture. Mel's shoes really looked normal that day and although Gere has shrunk, I'd be surprised if he was less than 5'8.5" himself. I do think Sigourney saying Mel is 5'9" the best source we have and the most believable figure, though it doesn't seem Mel's co-stars and colleagues put him any higher than that. And fwiw, Brad Pitt did really look about 2 inches taller to me almost a decade ago with at least a fraction less heel than Mel's cowboy boots so I still haven't figured that one out as I have Mel 5'9" and Pitt 5'10.5"-5'10.75".

Incidentally, I did come across this quote from a late 80's newspaper(Arizona Republic) a few months back: Gibson is 5 feet 10, wears lifts when playing opposite tall actresses(like Sigourney Weaver in "The Year of Living Dangerously").

It's more notable for Mel being put at 5'10" once again to show how consistent he's claimed and been listed at that height. If he ever deviated, I wouldn't be surprised if early on he told Sigourney he was 5'9" for instance as she did say it very matter of factly and the book mentioned above says his height was being given as 5'9"-5'10" back then. I have no doubt Mel has worn lifts and elevators from time to time over the years, but I'm really not sure he was doing it yet outside of Year of Living Dangerously so I suspect they may have just been recycling the story from 'Dangerously at that point. Obviously, he had cowboy boots in a film like Lethal Weapon and you can see him with 2"+ heels in the late 70's/early 80's like many other men, but as I've said before, i don't think Mel became too worried about his height until the late 80's/early 90s. Oddly, Mel's footwear often seems bigger to me on talk shows and at premieres or other events than in a lot of his films.

Rob lists Chris Cooper at 5'9.5" peak and 5'8.5" current and Cooper was clearly taller than Mel in their scenes together in The Patriot. Here are a few stills: Click Here In the scene the first two stills are taken from, there's also a shot of the two walking closely together and Cooper was a bit taller there as well. This is the 4th man listed between 5'9"-5'9.5" who has looked clearly taller than Gibson. Even a 5'9.25" listing would only fit if at least Anthony Hopkins were upgraded, but all 4 need an upgrade to fit with Gibson at 5'9.5".

You can compare the two well in Machete Kills and Mel looked 5'9" max with Danny even back then as well. Speaking of Danny, while I don't think it's improbable Mel is still around peak height at 61, the fact Danny doesn't look like he's shrunk much even now at 73 is pretty remarkable.

At this point, I'll only really change my mind on my estimate of Gibson at 5'9" - I'm neutral on the question of whether he's lost a 1/4" or not - if it's shown that Gibson was actually wearing lifts on occasions when I determined he wasn't. For instance, I'm pretty sure he had no lifts inside his New Balance here: Click Here He looked just about 5'9" at that event, but a decent chance he'd fall shy by a small fraction considering those are fairly thick 1.25" sneakers. However, I'm certain he put lifts in those same sneakers for his upcoming film The Professor and the Madman, hence the bulge: Click Here Click Here I think there's a good chance he did that here if you look at the foot that's touching the floor: Click Here He did look taller than he should have that day with Luke Bracey if Bracey is really 5'11".

At least you seemed to understand my point and I certainly understand that you'd be reluctant to change your mind based on photos and films. I just can't imagine Mel shorter than me. Do you remember if you were inside or outside and generally what type of shoes each of you had?

@zoran: Yeah, Sigourney Weaver filmed a movie with him in the early 80s and said he's 5'9", no matter what you say. Many people have met Mel and many say different things so what makes you the one who has it right? Scott Stapp surely met Mel, but said he's 5'7", which is ridiculous. You didn't measure Mel so yours is guesswork just like the rest of us. Even if you're in a better position to guess, you're still guessing. Why should we believe you over Sigourney Weaver for instance? Many people come on these boards and say they met actor x or actor y, but it doesn't convince anyone unless they offer proof. As I just said, the same way Mel has looked clearly shorter than a few men in the 5'9"-5'9.5" range, he's clearly taller than 172-173 cm men like Gary Sinise, Robert Downey Jr. and to a lesser extent, Joaquin Phoenix. I can even see an argument for 174 cm, but no lower and I'm pretty set on 175 cm or a flat 5'9".

Off topic, but watching it again, The Bounty is quite a good film, imo with a pretty amazing cast. Outside of Mel, you have Anthony Hopkins, Laurence Olivier, Daniel Day Lewis and Liam Neeson. How many casts do you see like that?

You can't really use stills taken while 2 people were walking to compare height, but just so you know what scene I'm referring to, here's a still: Click Here The only other thing I can do is link you to that scene on one of those free movie sites if you don't mind pop ups and dodgy sites. Other than that, we must have dramatically different eyes if you still see Gibson taller, much less an inch taller. I know I'm not the one who saw this as site regular Mister Lennon saw them the same height and another site regular Arch Stanton saw Hopkins 2 cm taller.

This is important because I believe this comparison alone is enough to show Gibson has always been closer to 5'9" than 5'10", but when supported by comparisons to 5'9.25" Kurt Russell in Tequila Sunrise, 5'9.5" Geoffrey Lewis in The Man Without a Face and Maverick, respectively and 5'10" Chris Rock in the Lethal Weapon 4 behind the scenes video is imo, overwhelming evidence or even sufficient proof Gibson was never over a flat 5'9". But at the same time, Sigourney Weaver's statement that Gibson is 5'9" is believable especially when you consider Mel did not seem more than an inch shorter than 5'10" Michael Parkinson and is quite clearly taller than men around 5'8" like Robert Downey Jr., Gary Sinise and Joaquin Phoenix. So at least for myself, I'm satisfied enough that Mel was 5'9", no more, no less and has possibly lost a small fraction with age the past few years, but can still look 5'9" enough. Hopefully, I can go as long as I have with Vin Diesel without changing my mind! But as paradoxical as it may sound at first, Mel has actually appeared on screen without lifts more often than I first thought, yet is also shorter than I initially thought. For instance, Mel appearing 5'9" at most in The Bounty, Tequila Sunrise, The Man Without a Face, Edge of Darkness, Maverick and Signs tells me he appeared in those films without lifts because I don't believe for a second Mel is or was only 5'8" as tabloids and even some regular posters here like Brad and Frank2 insist any more than I believe he was ever the 5'10" he claimed.

@The Master: Somewhat, but that's minimal when they're face to face not even a foot apart. Remove the tilt in photoshop and Hopkins still edges him, but certainly isn't shorter either way. Hopkins also had worse posture at that 24 second mark, but the statement Mel was taller at that time was simply not accurate. But like I said, I can even give them the same height in the film, but no way does Mel look 5'10" in that film unless Hopkins is at least that tall. There's a scene 5-6 minutes into the movie where they're walking side by side not on a ship and they look about the same height, but if anything, Hopkins edges him again. I'll even post that scene as well as long as it's not against the rules of the site to post links to dodgy websites. They look the same height when they're on Tahiti as well. I forgot to mention regarding height loss, I've heard Mel has been taking HGH in recent years and going to an anti-aging clinic, so that may have helped him maintain his height. I want to move on to the boots Mel is wearing these days, but first, I did find some video of the 2004 Tonight Show appearance I've previously posted pics from. This first video I'm only posting for the first 20 seconds: Click Here Not only is Mel's ankle bone above the top of his boot, but you can see how high his foot is when he bends it. Here's some of the rest of the interview: Click Here You can see this when he lifts his leg and crosses it shortly after the timestamp in that second video. Seldom have I been so certain of a roughly 1" internal lift as I am there so I feel safe saying Mel wasn't about to take off his shoe that night. I'd be interested to see the entire interview with the greeting since any chance to compare height is too brief, but even with Mel with some obvious lifts, his footwear is nothing compared to the man sitting next to him ;)

The images on Getty are higher quality, but I've posted those before and I think seeing his foot moving around makes it easy to see the lifts. The only thing I don't know is if the lifts are built in or if they're inserts because I've seen Mel wear those same suede Chelsea type boots a few years earlier on the Tonight Show, but wasn't quite as certain he had lifts that time. @MJKoP: Given Glenn's recount of reading Mel claim 5'11", complete with Mel wanting to "clear up the rumors" as Glenn put it, there's no doubt in my mind he had read a recap of the Parkinson interview. A 1987 article notes Mel's height is officially given as 5'10" then 3 years later Mel claims 5'10" to an interviewer for a newspaper then when he's arrested in 2011, his booking sheet gives him 5'10"(almost certainly a figure they got from Mel or his DL) and finally, he claims it again on video promoting Hacksaw Ridge. That's remarkable consistency so it'd be strange to just deviate that one time. This is what I'm 99.9% sure Glenn [mis]read: Click Here Click Here It's no different than others who mistakenly interpreted the Bond height thing in those stories as Mel claiming 5'8". The article is referring to Parkinson's official height of 5'11" and I could see how someone could misinterpret it the way it's written. Good luck convincing Glenn of this at that point, though. He can be stubborn when he gets an idea in his head (e.g., him being 5'8").

Edge of Darkness was one of the films he looked shortest in. Partially because the cast was tall like Jay O'Sanders and Peter Hermann, but he struggled with 5'9" in it. Unfortunately, I don't think there's a scene good enough to really compare to 5'9" Ray Winstone, but 6'1.5" Danny Huston truly towered Mel by about 5". Here's an example: Click Here

I posted the video of the Cannes red carpet with Mel and Sly Stallone looking about the same height in dress shoes, so here's the Cannes press conference: Click Here In this case, Sly looks taller, but if you scroll to the 2nd pic, you'll see their footwear and Mel looks to have 1.25" New Balance to me while Sly's boots look a bit funny and I'd guess he has a bit extra lift inside to give him a boost in the 2" range so like a reverse of Mel and Wesley Snipes on the same day, the footwear difference is probably as big as the height difference. I'd give all 3 men somewhere in the 5'8.5"-5'8.75" range at that time.

Btw, it's funny to see just 4 months ago, I was still considering the possibility of a 5'9.5" Mel Gibson since I've now become so adamant he was never anything over 5'9". Nowadays, I vary thinking the range must be 5'8.5" minimum and 5'9" max for both peak current. Sometimes I have comparisons in mind that make me think he has always been say 5'8.75", but other times I reverse myself on the height loss position and say he was a flat 5'9" until about 2012-2014 then dropped a fraction and then has dropped another fraction down to 5'8.5" recently for the release of Hacksaw Ridge, possibly even the Expendables 3. And then basically every variation between. Outside of that half inch range I stay within, the only other definite conclusion I've come to is if he was a full 5'9", I struggle to see that now next to Andrew Garfield. Although I struggle to be sure of height loss, much less half an inch because Mel today definitely doesn't look shorter to me than he did back when he did The Bounty or Tequila Sunrise in the 80s. I view Andy Garcia as very similar, though less blatant in terms of footwear.

Foster consistently comes up to the bottom of Mel's nose, which would be what? A 7 inch difference? And if she was still around her peak height of 5'2.5" at age 48, then she'd be probably 159.5 cm or so in those sandals. Mel looks maybe 5'10" in footwear there and I doubt he'd have lost much if any height by then.

@Timothy Jones: He now looks taller than he is, but gave a smaller impression in the 80s in films like The Bounty and Tequila Sunrise. But once he started wearing bigger footwear, it created a successful illusion of a solid 5'10" man at times because Mel has relatively shorter legs. Even outside of when he's worn lifts, his footwear has pretty much always been in the 3-5 cm range. But I agree with 5'9" on the nose, at least in his prime.

Honestly, he doesn't look much taller than Rob did there. Here's a still from the film: Click Here I do agree with Rob that Mel looked roughly 5'9" in the film with Trejo, but I'd guess under rather than over. He didn't have big heels that I could see so he must have worn normal footwear. Trejo must have the advantage in this premiere pic as Mel in cowboy boots doesn't look much taller than Rob: Click Here But in the other premiere pics I posted on on 6/Aug/17, assuming Mel and Rob have similar heads(no ides if they do) then Mel looks a half inch taller than Rob did in that first pic since Trejo is just above or at the top of Gibson's eyebrow, but Mel looks at least an inch taller in the second since Trejo is just above his eye, while his head was an inch higher with Rob. But Trejo had a fraction footwear advantage with Rob, while Gibson's cowboy boots give him a half inch, maybe 2 cm advantage over Trejo. Of course, Trejo apparently looked closer to 5'6" in person to Rob and 5'5" in the photo, so he may have stood taller with Mel, But this was 3 years before filming Machete Kills and 4 years before the premiere so Trejo could have lost height from age 65 to 68-69 possibly going from 167 cm to 166 range. Here's video of the premiere: Click Here Angle is a bit high, but I'd guess Mel is about 4 inches taller making him look about 5'9.5" as listed, but 5'9" max when you consider his cowboy boots. I would probably guess Mel in recent years at more 5'8.75" considering comparisons like with Snipes. I'm not certain if he was ever taller, but the safest bet from all I've seen would be 5'9" on the nose in his prime and a 1/4" loss the last 3, possibly 4 years.

@Slim: I agree. I was possibly reading too much into Hopkins edging him in the one face to face, so 5'9" on the nose or 175.3 is likely, though Kurt was taller in all scenes with Mel. Rob use to have Hopkins 174, so I'm not sure about 176 for him. Either way, I'd bet a large sum of money both were always closer to 5'9" than 5'10".

Actually, I'll amend a previous post and say Gibson and Anthony Hopkins could have been the same height in The Bounty. This short clip is the best scene to compare and Hopkins looks taller: Click Here but they look about the same when they're walking together at the beginning of the movie. It depends on how much these boots Gibson wore added? Click Here But Mel and Hopkins wore the same shoes in other scenes, such as when they meet the Tahitians and they do look about the same height in a wide shot then, but the angle is probably too high. It's a good film, btw. I'd say better than Tequila Sunrise, even though I'm a huge Kurt Russell fan. Incidentally, I'd say Mel is still looking as tall as Kurt did recently with Marky Mark.

He looks 175/5,9 in that clip, I'm leaning more to the flat 5'9 ATM, But overall, I think he's just a flat 5'9 but he's closer to 176 than 175, like precision wise he'd meausure 5'9.125 definitely within an eighth of an inch from the 5'9 mark, so I agree, he should get a half inch downgrade or quarter inch, if anthony Hopkins gets 176 prime as well.

@Slim: No problem. The first 2 movies in both series are classics. The Mad Max films should be seen by everyone at least once, though they're not really good for comparing height. Mel gives a shorter impression in those, though than later. He wears cowboy boots in the Lethal Weapon films so he'll look taller in comparisons. That's why I posted the '88 Academy Awards with Glover, it's rare for Glover to stand tall and for Mel to not have a footwear advantage. I'd take anything other than a wide shot between Mel and Danny with a grain of salt as well. Here's one wide shot from the first film: Click Here Even with Mel's boots and cap, the difference is quite apparent - perhaps 5 inches. I always thought he looked pretty similar proportionately to Sly Stallone in Rambo 2 in the film. Both close in height and weight with relatively shorter legs and longer torsos.

The Bounty and Tequila Sunrise stand out as movies Mel looked shorter in. You can see this from the face to face scenes I posted stills from with Anthony Hopkins in the former and Kurt Russell in the latter. I'm almost positive Kurt was a stronger 5'9" than Mel because if we say Mel's Reeboks added an inch, Kurt would have to have heels comfortably over 2 inches to actually give him 2 inches of height, which would still only make them about the same height barefoot. Kurt had more footwear, but not THAT much more. The only way I'd conclude Kurt and Mel were the same height based on the film is if Kurt wore lifts. And here are the shoes Anthony Hopkins wore in The Bounty: Click Here I don't see how those shoes could account for Hopkins looking a half inch or more taller if he's really a half inch shorter. Mel wore knee height boots you see in period pieces. I don't think there was much of a footwear difference. If you look at the other films back then, you'll probably guess him around 5'9" as well, except if you don't account for elevator boots in The Year of Living Dangerously with Sigourney Weaver. Later on, he always wore boots and also bulked up, which made him seem bigger overall.

But yeah, you're right. He's a 5'9" guy who simply got tired of the press writing he was 5'4", 5'6", 5'7" or 5'8". For a while, the press obsessed about his height almost as much as Cruise.

@Slim: I watched the Patriot a few times when it was new, but not in many years now. So I'm due another viewing. I'm almost positive Mel pulled off taller than 5'9", more 5'10" with Ledger. But I think Mel didn't care about his height in the 80s based on what Sigourney said, however, this story Barry Norman told suggests he became more conscious: Click Here I do believe Norman's story because it sounds like what Mel did with Parkinson. Then you see Mel going back to 1990 bringing up reading he was only 5'4". That's probably around the time it started to bother him because even in Tequila Sunrise(1988), Mel was only wearing Reeboks, looking up to Kurt Russell and Raul Julia could see over his head. I would say that John Phillip Law's story doesn't necessarily contradict this because Mel wasn't necessarily the one ordering the height difference be minimized. But if it's true that Mel's height was given as between 5'9" and 5'10" early, I'd think 5'9" max even based on that since it's rare for an actor under 6 feet to be billed with a figure below his height. But as far as I know Mel has claimed 5'10" since 1987. But like I said, Sigourney said very matter of factly Mel was 5'9" at a time his height was supposedly given as between 5'9" and 5'10" so it's possible Mel was even willing to admit being 5'9" in private early on.

@Slim 182: Just to get you up to speed on the Gibson height debate, Mel on the Tonight Show is one of the clearest examples I've seen of an unusually high ankle with the bone around the top of the boot: Click Here Click Here The angle of his foot makes it look like there's a larger than normal insole. That's the type of thing I want to see someone find for Brad Pitt before I say for sure he wears lifts. I was able to find it for Michael Douglas ironically with Johnny Carson in 1992. It seems The Tonight Show, regardless of who it's hosted by is the time to find out who wears lifts! In fact, Rob posted a photo of Tom Cruise wearing elevator shoes on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon a few months back.

Also, I should have mentioned that Rob doesn't have Gibson listed at 5'9.5" because of comparisons to Garfield and Hardy. Rob told me Mel at 5'9" max is believable, but he's not sure if Mel was always 5'9"-5'9.25" or if he's lost half an inch. He also estimated Mel at 5'9" with Danny Trejo in Machete Kills and I agree with that estimate, but that's an example of why I don't believe Mel has lost much because here is Mel with pretty normal looking shoes looking as tall as ever with Richard Gere in 2013: Click Here Click Here Click Here

I do think Gere had dropped below 5'9" by that point seeing Carey Lowell look near 4 inches taller at times in heels that same year, but it's tough to see Gibson shorter. So the full 5'9" is fair, even 5'9.25" and that's the range I remember him looking with Parkinson when you consider posture. I'm probably leaning more towards the full 5'9" at the moment after viewing those pics rather than 5'8.75", but I really can't get over Mel looking shorter than Hopkins face to face. I think a 176 cm listing would be ok if Hopkins got an upgrade to that same figure since I could see them the same height, but not Gibson any taller. I'd give Sigourney at least 181 then as well since even Mel implied she was 3 inches taller than him. But that would also make him the same height as Kurt Russell and shorter than Geoffrey Lewis, so it fits ok. But if you just watch Mel's 80s films, he seems 174-175 cm range, imo and smaller as well. His weight was probably typically in the buck sixty range back then. Sigourney did say very matter of factly that Mel was 5'9". She may have known his height considering how much emphasis it received shooting that film. She actually seems less certain about her own height saying "I guess I'm five eleven." Either that, or she doesn't like her height and doesn't like saying it. But the main point of the Gere pics was to show why I don't think Mel has lost more than 1/4" or so and why I think it'd be more recent. Maybe from later 2013 at the earliest, imo.

Unfortunately, one or the other pretty much always has a camera advantage, except maybe that first pic where it's not so noticeable. I would conclude Turnbull was taller, but an inch tops in the shoes they're wearing, maybe less. Gibson does look to have a shoes that add a fraction more, though. I'd still guess Mel no less than say 5'8.75" there assuming he doesn't have an extra lift. That's the thing about Mel, though. He almost always wears 1.2"-1.7" footwear and almost always has good posture so even at 5'9", it'd be easy enough to look 5'9.5"-5'10" pretty consistently. But the last 2-3 years, Mel has substituted more a new pair of boots for his cowboy boots, but the heel looks maybe 1/4" smaller so that would account for him looking slightly shorter.

Hopkins was the tipping point for me since I wasn't even convinced he was 5'9" until I saw him taller than Mel. And as a bonus, since you gave Joaquin Phoenix a weak 5'8", here he is looking only about a half inch shorter than Mel at the Signs premiere in 2002: Click Here It's a full pic with similar shoes and similar posture as far as I can tell.

But if you look at the Venice Film Festival, Garfield can look at least an inch taller with 2 cm less footwear: Click Here Click Here Click Here Click Here Mel's heeled boots aren't much less than cowboy boots so about 1.5" while Garfield has just 0.7" type sneakers, which would put him 181 cm if he's 179 barefoot. The difference can even look 1.5" at times. This makes Mel only a solid 178 cm in heeled boots if I'm right about an inch difference. Hardy can look shorter than 5'9" at times as well, such as with Jeremy Piven and Mario Lopez. Mel did look about 5'10" at the Fury Road premiere, but there's no way of knowing if Mel had a lift in his cowboy boots with Hardy, which is why it's best not to judge someone's height in cowboy boots. But based on Rob's statements, it seems he'd put Snipes at 5'8.5" or 5'8.75" today(but like Gibson, he doesn't know if Snipes lost a fraction or was always that height) and we know Mel had at least 1.5 cm more footwear because we can identify their sneakers, but do you see more than a 1.5 cm height difference?

If someone photoshopped one of those comparisons, we'd see Danny's head only reaches around 3 cm higher on Mel's head than on Rob's head depending on head size, eye level etc. For the record, Mel was only George Clooney's current age when these photos were taken and Rob doesn't think Clooney has lost enough yet to warrant a peak height, so it's unlikely Mel, with better posture and no back injury like Clooney's would have been much different from his peak at the same age.

Li doesn't look taller than the 5'5.5" Rob lists him, but even with loose posture, he reaches a good inch above Mel's eyes, so no more than a 3.5" difference. Notice that Mel only looks 4.5"-5" taller than Joe Pesci, who we can assume is in elevator shoes, but I don't think I've ever seen Pesci look taller than 5'4".

You seem open-minded, Slim, so if I post all the strongest evidence together from the 80s and even the 90s, I think you may see my point, especially since a handful of the comparisons are men listed here from 5'9" to 5'10". My guess is a weak 5'9" so from 174.5 to 175 cm, but I'd go with 175 cm as it'd be a less dramatic downgrade. I do think 175 peak and 174 current would be a decent listing as well, but I think peak heights should be reserved for those who are obviously shorter than they use to be. I'd give Clooney a peak height before Gibson.

Regardless, looking at Mel at a lot of events the past few years, if I can never say for sure whether someone has lost a small fraction, I'll say at least that I really don't think Mel has lost anything noticeable. He honestly still typical looks taller to me than he did in the 80s. If you notice, you never see Mel slouch and he's still at an age where it's not uncommon to be at or very near peak height.

Off topic, but Hacksaw Ridge was outstanding. Nice to see Mel direct again. He's the one actor I know with the ability to have a Clint Eastwood type career behind the camera as well.

I really can't see a possibility of 177 cm. I looked at the face to face scene with Anthony Hopkins again and I think a poster here Arch Stanton is right that Gibson does look near 2 cm shorter than Anthony Hopkins, who was about 175 himself! So I now think Gibson is and was honestly 174-175 range and a max 5'9" guy, just like Stallone. Check out the elevators he wore in Year of Living Dangerously: Click Here They're a minimum 6 cm imo, but I think a little more, probably 2.5"-2.7" range and if Gibson were almost 5'10", he'd have been comfortably taller than 5'11" Sigourney Weaver in flats. This was not the case as he often struggled to look her height, as you can see in even the closeup I posted on 5/Jul/17.

If she is 181 cm in those flats, Mel should have been comfortably taller as those sort of elevators would make a 177 cm man reach 183-184 cm. As I said in a previous post, just look at Rob in 2.4" elevators with Jenny in flats. And while the shoes are obvious elevators, Mel admitted they were himself so there's no doubt he had elevator boots. Remember, Geoffrey Lewis isn't even 177 cm. If I summarized all the evidence that brought me to this conclusion, I think most would at least see how I arrived at it. In fact, I don't think it could be called unreasonable on the basis of the Hopkins comparison alone as Rob himself concluded Arnie was taller than Carl Weathers due to Predator. I'll never agree to the 5'8" flat stuff or anything below 5'8.5", but I have to go with 5'8.75" peak and current. I'll probably go back and forth on 174.5 and 175 cm, much like I do with Stallone.

No real doubt in my mind now that Geoffrey Lewis(who Rob lists 5'9.5") was taller than Mel Gibson back in the early/mid 90s. Like in Maverick, he was once again taller than Mel in The Man Without a Face. Here are a few stills: Click Here

The scene is a little after 1 hour 20 minutes or so into the film. Gibson wears hiking type boots through most of the film and then dress shoes when dressed formally later on. Lewis wears standard police type footwear. It is another film Mel did a good job with, though, as it's a different acting role for him and it was his directorial debut.

I took screenshots of Mel and Kurt's shoes in Tequila Sunrise: Click Here Mel wears sneakers. Not the same ones the entire film, but you can see he has black Reeboks at one point, which he wears in the scene where he's walking with Kurt late in the movie. Based on his footwear, he didn't seem concerned about his height in this film. Kurt has some sort of dress shoe or boot and it seems he wears the same ones the entire film. I can't tell for sure how big the heels are due to his pants covering them most of the time, but he likely has a fraction footwear advantage, though I doubt as big as the at least 1 inch height difference between them throughout the film. Mel looks fairly short in this film. He's probably barefoot at one point with a maybe 5'6" Michelle Pfeiffer when he puts his son to bed and he only seems a few inches taller. He may be barefoot again, though it's once again not a wide shot and Raul Julia can look down onto the top of his head when he sneaks up on Mel with a gun as a joke.

At least the footwear advantage partially explains why Kurt made Mel look not much over 5'8", but I'd say there's a good chance Kurt is the taller of the two. But now it seems to me that Mel wasn't particularly height conscious through 1988, but by 1990 he's complaining about reading he's only 5'4". That's likely around the time he started wearing lifts.

I went alone to the cinema to see 'Lethal Weapon' when it first came out. I asked myself, "Who's this fantastic new actor? I'm impressed and can't wait to see more!"
Well, see more I did (including the first 'Lethal Weapon' sequel, and I think it was probably the second one which gave me a better idea of Mel's height - and physique.
Being a fan of Patsy Kensit back then (I saw her in 'Absolute Beginners' at the picture house as well!), I pounced on the opportunity of seeing 5ft5 Patsy star with Mel.
They were in love in the movie, so I was very pleased and excited (yes, really I was!) that happiness was heading in the direction of this truly likeable young man, having been through the tragedy of losing his wife, the consequences of how saddened he is you see in the first film, turning him into the suicidal 'Lethal Weapon'.
Without discussing the second film's storyline, you do get many chances of seeing Patsy and Mel together. I don't think that Mel looks taller than 5ft9, but I can't see him at this time in his career anyway, being less than that. We see in all the 'Weapon' films, plenty of chances of comparing him to the enchanting Danny Glover, 6ft1, and the guy who won an edition of 'Big Brother', big, blond, Gary Busey, who I voted for because he made me laugh when he relentlessly wound up 'White Dee'!
Well, because of all these comparisons, Mel gets 5ft9. He could be 5ft8 now and I don't dismiss the possibility that he was taller than that, but as much as 5ft10/10.5? No, doubtful, but 5ft9/9.75 - yes, highly likely!
For some stooooopid reason, Mel has been picked on 'South Park'-style, but hey guys, it still hurts and is so uncalled for!

Well, Mel is definitely an inch or more taller than Marky Mark from what I've seen of the two, but based on the photos on set, Ferrell at 6'2.5" does indeed tower him as you'd expect since Ferrell is similar to how tall Glover was. But Mel has thick hiking type boots that Rob estimated 1.3" range, though I believe Mel likely has lifts in them as well. Of course, this could be true for Wahlberg as well. But Joaquin Phoenix is just about the same height as Wahlberg, yet in this full premiere photo with Mel definitely peak height, there's barely any difference: Click Here Honestly, with Joaquin no more than 5'8" by his own admission, that's one of the photos Mel can look only 5'8.5" in. What's interesting though is Mel currently looks taller next to Mark Wahlberg than M. Night Shyamalan did at The Happening premiere. Go look at my post on M. Night's page for an example. Of course, this can probably be explained by footwear, but it's still interesting since I don't know Wahlberg to wear lifts at premieres, yet he looks just an inch shorter than M. Night in full side by side pics.

Incidentally, I don't believe Mel was that height conscious until the 90s, but Mel being an action star perhaps 6 inches shorter than his sidekick makes it fairly likely Richard Donner saw fit to use a little box at times.

@Slim 181: Personally, I have to agree with anonnnn that Mel was and still is a flat 5'9" until compelling evidence that he's shorter is posted, but if I did believe he shrunk a half inch, that would probably be my guess.

Here's what I was talking about. While it's not unlikely Mel put lifts in his boots for the first film, the actual boots looked like typical cowboy boots to me while these ones in the 3rd have more of that bulky Burt Reynolds/Chuck Norris look: Click Here Could have had full 2 inch heels as well: Click Here And while I don't see any sign of built in lifts, or anything unusual about these boots, I'm almost positive Mel put something in them for the premiere: Click Here Click Here You get the sense he's much taller than Russo(in low heels) and not that much shorter than Glover even!

On the other hand, Lethal Weapon 4 was the only film in the series he didn't have cowboy boots, but rather these boots: Click Here It doesn't mean he didn't get a boost at any point in the film, but considering Mel was at least an inch shorter than 5'10" max Chris Rock in the behind the scenes clip, he must have not had big footwear then. I'm almost certain Mel had normal shoes at the premiere as well: Click Here He doesn't look anything over 5'9" there to me because 5'3" Joe Pesci reaches just about Mel's eyes, but Pesci likely has an extra inch footwear making him effectively 5'4". Doesn't look more than 3.5" taller than Jet Li either, especially considering Li's bad posture as Li's head is clearly above Mel's eyebrows: Click Here Pesci is consistently 4.5"-5" shorter at this premiere.

But Danny Glover despite a pronounced slouch while standing slightly behind Mel still looks near 5" taller at age 52. And 4 years later in 2002, Danny was still near 5" taller even when he's leaning and Mel stands perfectly as Mel struggles to reach his eye level: Click Here And fwiw, an article in The Guardian on elevator shoes noted Mel looked like he was on his toes in this photo from the same night: Click Here Then looking at this '88 pic again: Click Here I'd say the camera being on Glover's side is likely what gives the illusion he's at least 7 inches taller, but it's really not a bad pic so I do think it at least helps validate Glover being 6 inches taller when he stood straight in the video. But if you consider the '98 and '02 comparisons, is it really going to be much less with equal posture? As for comparing them in the films, I'd take anything other than a wide shot with a grain of salt.

@Rampage, honestly, I can't really see a chance of near 5'10" barefoot. Rob said below that Chris Rock is definitely taller than Mel and has said that Rock can look from 5'9.5"-5'10" to him. In fairness, I did use to think Mel was 5'10", but seeing him indoors with no less footwear looking up a bit to Anthony Hopkins sealed it for me.

Btw, I've noticed a couple of interesting things. Between the movies and premieres, Lethal Weapon 4 seemed to be among the times he cared least about his height since the 80s while Lethal Weapon 3 may have been the time he was wearing his biggest footwear. It's a shame there's not any photos with decent enough posture or angles to accurately judge, but it wouldn't surprise me if the Lethal Weapon 3 premiere was the tallest he ever looked. I'd be surprised if he wasn't passing for 5'11" based on what I've seen, but then at the Lethal Weapon 4 premiere, he doesn't look anything over 5'9". The other interesting thing is I looked at Mel and Danny Glover in '88, '98 and '02 and it doesn't seem like Danny lost much during that time accounting for his bad posture. He must have lost most of his height the last 15 years. It's shocking seeing Mel with Danny this year compared to even '02 even accounting for Mel having maybe 1.5" heeled boots this year. You'd think Danny would be someone who would have lost noticeable height by mid 50s. I'll post examples of what I'm talking about at some later time.

Yeah, Mel and Charlie have to be very similar, but Mel is usually going to look taller. Both claim to be 5'10" as well. I really think men between 5'8.5" and 5'9.5" who claim 5'10" or 5'11" are often among the toughest to guess.

Mel looks 3 inches taller to me so 5'10" in shoes. Unfortunately, we don't have more or better pics, but any wide shots from the 90s are much rarer so at least the first one seems to be a decent reference. Considering Mel is the art director on Bruce's new movie, we may see them together soon.

Yeah, Mel still looked about 1.5" taller in the side by side pic of the two I posted below. Mel is still near 5'9" and can look taller than he is when he wants. He's not lost much at 61. But both men wear boots for the film: Click Here Mel's look bulkier, but he's still easily taller than Mark.

A real question, imo, is, who was taller in 2004 between Mel and Charlie Sheen? Click Here Click Here I'd say pretty much the same, but of course in the second pic Mel is doing the old arm around shoulder, Bust a Gut while Charlie has his typically terrible posture. In the first pic, he seems to be standing decently enough looking eye to eye, Mel isn't Busting a Gut there either. Of course, they're opposites since Charlie's bad posture will make him look closer to 5'8" while Mel's bigger footwear and generally good posture makes him look 5'10", even 5'10.5" at times.

Btw, to back up my point on Mel and Sigourney, look at Rob in 2.4" elevators with Jenny in I believe half inch type shoes: Click Here The posture is relevant as Mel obviously stood better than Sigourney in scenes. This is an example why I believe the difference between Mel and Sigourney has to be over 2" since she in flats looked to be edging him at times in elevators. You can definitely gain more than 2" between elevators vs flats, camera angles and posture. As Mel said "it still didn't work."

One of the things that makes it toughest for me to buy anything over 5'9" flat is The Year of Living Dangerously. Mel in elevator boots often struggles to even look as tall as Sigourney in flats.

If you consider 2.3"-2.5" probable for his elevator boots then a 5'9.5" Mel would reach about 6 feet, while a 5'11" Sigourney gaining just a fraction from flats would be clearly shorter and still shorter even if the elevators were only 2". Actually, even if I'm right about a 5'9" flat Gibson, Sigourney at 181 cm barefoot peak makes more sense with this film.

Other than that, there's nobody to really compare Mel with in the film since the only other known height is Linda Hunt at 4-foot-9, and I think it would be a celebheights first if we tried to determine the exact height difference of 2 people a foot apart! But it is a good film regardless. Outside of his classic franchises and Braveheart, Mel has had a number of other good films that don't get mentioned much. His early career is interesting as well since he was in more diverse roles before becoming an established icon.

If I'm right about Mel not having lifts there then he still may be 5'9". On the height loss question, I see 2 possibilities. If Mel was ever taller than 5'9", he must have lost height around 2011-2012. And if Mel has lost height regardless then the other possible time period I could see Mel shrinking is 2015-2016. But really I think Mel gaining weight at times has given him a shorter impression. Mel seemed like he could still measure up decently to 5'11.5" Arnold at Expendables 3 premiere almost 3 years ago: Click Here Click Here Of course, Mel had cowboy boots: Click Here and Arnold's posture probably makes them seem closer, but it'd still be easy enough to see him pull off 5'10" with Arnie. I'm somewhat skeptical he's taller than 5'9.5" seeing him with Mark Wahlberg and Bruce Willis a few years back, though he does slouch, so maybe he's taller than he often looks. Those would be my guesses as well, Shredder. The comparisons with 5'9"-5'9.5" guys is what seals it for me. Stallone in big heels was more than an inch taller than Lewis in the beginning of Tango and Cash so Lewis wasn't over 5'9.5", especially at 58. My impression is Mel is struggling just a bit more to hang onto 5'9" the past few years, though I actually think current height is tougher because of footwear.

I'm not sure how much Julia's leg/foot position will affect height, but without considering anything else, the difference looks at least 1" to me and less than 2". The best you could do with this is compare to how Keifer Sutherland(listed 5'8.5" here) and Jason Patric(5'9.5" on this site) look with Julia, or other men in this range.

That's not necessarily true, Morris. Sigourney Weaver said he's 5'9" and they not only met, but worked together for an entire movie where height was a major factor in shooting the film. There's probably nobody in better position to say how tall Mel is. Although I will say I have to believe the difference between the two was at least a solid 2 inches for there to be such an issue. Also, if you look at their statements, Mel implies there was 3 inches between the two by inflating himself to 5'10" and Sigourney to 6'1" and while Sigourney gives a 2 inch difference with the figures in her Terry Wogan interview, it seems she was saying 3 inches on CNN. But I think it's more likely Mel was 175 cm and Sigourney could have possibly been a bit over 5'11" in her prime. Maybe 181 cm. I'll also say there was an interviewer who reported Mel was "at least 5'10" in flat sandals" in the late 90s. So it's not true that nobody who meets him sees him taller than 173.

But I go with 5'9" flat because honestly if you go by Rob's listings, Mel could even look 5'8.5" with Kurt Russell and Anthony Hopkins. Night in 2013 with a now 5'11" max Bruce Willis, he doesn't look over the 5'9.5" he's listed here. Actually, there are also full photos of Mel from the 90s looking a flat 5'9" with Bruce assuming he was 5'11.5" then and about 5'10" in shoes assuming Demi Moore was about 5'7" in heels. If she's 5'4.5", she could easily be 5'7.5" in heels, but she was standing a bit farther than Mel and slouching more so I assumed she only stood 5'7".

I'm not even saying he hasn't lost anything, but I thought one or two posters were jumping to the conclusions with comments like "peak height is badly needed". I think Rob put it fairly when he said it's a debate whether he's lost height or was always 5'9". Don't get me wrong anonnnn, I pretty much agree with you, but I think Mel COULD now be a 1/4" under 5'9". I think Rob's response to Barry Norman's story was probably right. Mel was fine with his height early when he co-starred with Sigourney, but years of hearing he was 5'8", 5'7", 5'6" or even 5'4" as he tells it got to him and he started wearing lifts. It's not even that Mel never wore big heels before Lethal Weapon, as you can see in this 1983 picture: Click Here But he definitely looked shorter in the 80s than in the 90s/00s or even than he sometimes does now. If you look at the 1st Lethal Weapon, there are scenes he still looks small next to Glover, such as the parking garage after he flips Glover and Danny can look at least 5 inches taller than Mel in cowboy boots when they're target shooting.

Having shown some of Mel's older "short appearances", I'll show some of Gibson's recent tall appearances.

I think one factor is that there's A LOT more photo and video taken from events now than even 10, much less 15 or 20 years ago. In many cases, people may have formed their opinion based on photos where you couldn't see feet. In that case, here's Mel and Clint Eastwood this year: Click Here

My main point is that we must be careful on reading too much into one or two comparisons, especially with the more controversial heights. I put Mel into the same category of surprising 5'9" flat guys with Sly Stallone, Michael Douglas and Eric Roberts. All lift wearers or at least big heels in Roberts case who could look 5'10.5" or 5'11" at times. In fact, Rob had Eric at 5'9.5" before meeting him. In Mel's case, I will say I wish I could see the video with Parkinson again because 5'9.25" or even 5'9.5" could look plausible there, but I do specifically remember Mel Busting a Gut while Parkinson stood well, but didn't seem to be forcing it for a measurement like Mel did. That could have made the difference a bit less.

Either peak and current are possible, Shredder, and if he was given a peak height, that would be the best listing, imo, but I don't see evidence yet Mel has lost half an inch. It's tough to tell with big heel and lift guys, like when Sly started wearing normal dress shoes a lot late 2008. Mel still wears lifts sometimes, especially in movies, but hasn't been wearing cowboy boots since late 2015. I share your exact estimates, Shredder, although I do think Glover at 6'3" was possible the more I think of it. He was definitely shorter than Baldwin, but whether he was 1 inch or 3 cm shorter, I'm not sure. Interestingly, I wouldn't expect Glover at more than 6'2.5" by the time Lethal Weapon 4 premiered when he was 52, but even standing further than Mel from the camera with a noticeable slouch, he could still look almost 5 inches taller at the premiere. I'm pretty sure Mel was liftless at the premiere and looked 5'9" to me if we consider Jet Li 5'5.5" and we assume Pesci had an extra inch footwear.

I noticed Mel and Sly Stallone both gave a taller impression to me when they got heavier. Sly from about 2003-2008 when his weight ranged from 190-215 as opposed to his more usual 175-180 and Mel in his recent years at 190 or so compared to when he was 165 max in the first Lethal Weapon.

Btw, I meant to post the shoes Hopkins wore for all of The Bounty: Click Here That's why I can't see it explained as footwear advantage. Mel had almost knee high boots, but they didn't seem to have big heels.

MJKoP, it's quite alright and I do understand your point. Mel is indeed one of my favorite actors and filmmakers, however, considering the lack of activity on this page and the fact that when I upload say a screenshot or some other pic and it shows the views, it's usually only a few. Even on more active pages, celebheights is a niche site as Rob himself has said so the impact will probably be minimal, likely negligible regardless, other than arguably the principled stand. So that, plus the fact that typically people I've known who frequent torrent sites tend to look for whatever movie it is they want to watch their anyway. So I believe it's pretty likely if I were to innocently peak someone's interest in a Gibson film or any film for that matter. they'd be likely to look it up on a torrent site if that was how they usually watched their movies. Of course, I'm not sure of the deal Mel has in this regard. Whether he got a fee for the movie in question, or whether his deal was also a percentage of the gate, home video sales etc. Ironically, Mel's comeback was spoiled somewhat when the Expendables 3 was leaked weeks in advance. Granted, the film wasn't as good as the first 2, but surely the opening weekend would have been better considering how well the previous 2 films had done. In short, I do appreciate your point of view, but I see linking to YouTube for the purposes of this site as relatively innocuous and having paid to see many Gibson films, I think it at worst, balances somewhat.

I did watch Blood Father last night, Rob and Mel looked a bit taller than William H. Macy. This is about as good a photo as I can find with Diego Luna at Cannes: Click Here Unfortunately, the angle is a bit low. I think the 2 could be the same height or within a 1/4", but I don't trust either of their shoes and Luna was going up on one foot multiple pictures! Click Here

I have considered the possibility of Mel losing height the last year, but we agreed Mel looked 5'9" in Machete Kills and I'd be tough a sell that Mel already lost 1/2" by 56. He was still appearing tall not long before and a while after. It was only 2 years ago he was appearing 5'10" in cowboy boots with Tom Hardy. But in fairness, the fact that Mel still wears thick footwear makes it almost impossible to say for sure how much, if anything significant Mel has lost and there's still a real question over how tall Mel was to begin with. But I think Mel is a case like Stallone where the shorter and early career appearances should be considered more because a footwear.

I really don't know if Mel has lost any height yet or not, but I'd bet a large sum he hasn't lost anywhere near an inch. As low 5'8.5" today isn't impossible considering footwear, but I haven't seen enough to make that guess personally. I saw an old 2007 comment on the Simon Cowell page where Rob mentioned Gibson as one of the 3 he'd class as wearing oversized heels or lifts along with Simon Cowell and Sly Stallone. Mel loves cowboy boots, but he's worn a lot of other big and bulky footwear as well.

Watching Machete Kills, Mel looks more a flat 5'9" to me with Danny Trejo. This was filmed in mid 2012 so Mel was 56. 3 years later, Mel in cowboy boots still pulled off 3 cm taller than 5'9" Tom Hardy and just 2 years earlier, Mel in custom cowboy boots looked close to 181 cm Jimmy Kimmel. This lends credence to my theory that Mel was always just a 5'9" flat guy, who looked shorter early in his career because he didn't care much about his height then and he got bigger footwear as he became more height conscious. Mel didn't have his usual cowboy boots for Signs either and since I already posted a full premiere pic of M. Night edging Mel out with worse posture, here's on set pics: Click Here Click Here Click Here Not the best pics, but a clear pattern, especially added to the premiere pics. What are the odds they didn't give him lifts to minimize the half foot difference between Mel and his sidekick in a blockbuster action film? It's possible he's lost a quarter inch and is now 5'8.75", but if you just went by his 80s films, I bet most would have guessed him at just a flat 5'9". Here's a still face to face with Anthony Hopkins for good measure: Click Here I'm a huge fan of Gibson, he's absolutely one of my favorite actors and filmmakers, but I just can't give someone anything over 5'9" when they're clearly shorter than Kurt Russell in their early 30s and then can look shorter than Anthony Hopkins in their late 20s. I can buy that one of them, probably Kurt if either of them, could have worn lifts, but both of them? Hopkins didn't even have much footwear for that film. Height loss should only be assumed when someone is clearly looking shorter than before, but that's not the case with Mel. You can see Mel's legs are quite short for his height when he doesn't have cowboy boots. Comparing the difference would to how he looks when he does have the cowboy boots could give you an idea of whether he often puts lifts in them or not.

I was actually looking for a different scene in the movie, but this is even better! If they haven't seen it, Rob and Shredder might find this of interest as well. Go to 3:22 in this clip: Click Here Hopkins stands face to face with Gibson indoors without hats and if anything looks slightly taller. Between this, Tequila Sunrise and Signs, I think I can finally feel confident about 5'9" on the nose for Gibson. Standing by himself, Gibson in Lethal Weapon looked very similar size physically and proportionately to Sly Stallone around the same time in say Rambo 2. Btw, Richard, Downey is shorter than those guys at 172-173 cm and Redford, at least in his prime, was taller at a likely 178-179.

These cowboy boots Mel was wearing did look like nice custom made ones: Click Here And I did suspect lifts inside, partially because he looked almost 181 cm Jimmy Kimmel's height: Click Here I watched that interview when it happened and they really were close in height that night, just as the photo suggests. Solid 5'9" guy barefoot, 175-176 cm, perhaps the same height as someone like Eddie Murphy. Certainly 5'9" flat would mean he's most likely worn lifts outside of with Sigourney. Certainly I'd have to at least shave 0.5 cm off my previous guess and say more 176 since I can't give him any more than Kurt Russell and he is shorter than M. Hi rob i'd just like to elaborate on my incidental meetings with Mel Gibson, I don't really like to out him like this coz he was such a nice guy but I feel compelled to clear up this height question. I first met him in a department store in Sydney when I was 19 yrs old that would have made him 28 yrs he signed a piece of lingerie for me that I'd purchased for my girlfriend, now I'm precisely 173 cms and we were eye to eye both in casual shoes ,he's 5ft8 that's for sure.

Unfortunately, the few shots that show Kurt's footwear(1:12:55 for example + last timestamp w/ Mel) are too dark in this video quality to see if he has an extra heel, but Kurt does undoubtedly look taller, by perhaps an inch face to face. Strange because Mel usually favored bigger footwear and typically seems taller to me than Kurt.

I don't agree at all. There's no evidence Mel has shrunk noticeably. He's always been somewhere around 5'9" and still is. Here's Mel in cowboy boots looking a legit 5'10" with 5'9" Tom Hardy in May 2015: Click Here not even a couple of years ago yet. If Mel didn't have lifts in his boots then that still points to 5'9.5" barefoot since those are more 1.5" style than 2" and he was never taller than that as shown by the Parkinson comparison.

I can't help but see 6 inches when Glover stands tall and even when he crouches down early, I'm still seeing a good 3.5" or so, but based on that video, I'd give the same 190 cm for Glover and 175 cm for Mel. But I'm still not changing my guess from 5'9.5" yet though I think Mel's cowboy boots are more suspect now. Btw, was Hopkins really 5'9" peak? I didn't notice his height in his early career so I'll have to defer for now, but by the time he made Meet Joe Black at age 60, he only looked 5'8" to me and Brad Pitt basically towered over him.

Yeah I looked it up because there was a picture posted here from that night where Danny looked 7 inches taller so I wanted to see if that was an illusion, you can see just how much height Danny can drop from about 0:20 to 0:22. That's the 5'9" max Mel we saw with Joaquin Phoenix and Kurt Russell. It at least makes me more suspicious that his cowboy boots could contain lifts, even if not by his own choice, the director may have told Mel to so Danny wouldn't tower him so much. Not just for image, but for convenience shooting the 2 together.

Especially considering he's down to just 6'1" today at only 70 years old. Sometimes this makes sense to reevaluate the peak heights in these cases. Eric Roberts is a good example of that. Although it's certainly possible they gave Mel lifts in his cowboy boots, especially as a 5'9" star of a blockbuster action movie franchise.

I could see the weak 5'9" with Vaughn, but I haven't seen enough to believe he's lost anything significant. He can still look at least 5'10" in cowboy boots or other thicker shoes. He wasn't much shorter than Denzel at that same event. I think you can argue from 5'9" or 5'9.5" peak and maybe the range is more 5'8.75"-5'9.25" currently. Maybe a 5'9.25" listing like Kurt Russell would be good, especially since he strangely looked shorter than Russell in Tequila Sunrise.

Funny thing is, sometimes women are the farthest off guessing height, but so far, Sigourney Weaver and Brigitte Nielsen seem to be about the best at it with Weaver guessing 5'9" for Mel and Nielsen guessing 5'8.5"-5'9" for Sly and 5'9"-5'9.5" for Eddie Murphy.

Photos with Garfield show that he is wearing custom made shoes. Garfield is in a 2cm shoe, so if Mel is anything near 5'9" then wouldn't they be the same size or close? Instead he is still about 2" shorter than Garfield. I remember meeting him when he did Edge of Darkness and he had on 2" cowboy boots and in those he was around 5'9". When I watched the movie and noticed that he was shorter than a legit 5'9" Winstone, I was convinced that he was barely 5'8". Rob is too generous with his listing.

When Mel and Robert Downey, Jr. did "Air America" (1990) together, a reviewer referred to them as "the diminutive duo." Judging by photos of them together in that (atrocious) movie, I think Mel was 5'7.75"-to-5'8" and Downey was 5'6.5"-to-5'6.75".

Shredder, Mel claimed 5'10" in 1990 as mentioned above, and his booking sheet had him at 5'10" in 2011, which he either told the cops or they got from his driver's license plus there was studio publicity putting his height at 5'10" which all suggests he's been consistent claiming that height for his entire career. As for Mario, the most I can buy him at is 5'8.5". He's shorter than every 5'9" guy I've seen him with. I'm convinced if he took a picture with Rob, we'd find out for sure he's shorter than people think, much like Eric Roberts. I'd believe 5'8" flat before 5'9" at this point, but no less.

Bumped into Gibson several years ago (2006) in Santa Monica, a month before his infamous fall off the wagon. I went to use restroom at work and he comes in wearing plaid shirt, regular cargo-type pants and sneakers. Really chunky and hirsute guy IRL, and grumpy. I'm 5'11" in shoes, he was no more than 5'8 (his hair "up-comb" added almost 3 inches to his perceived height). I've bumped into RDJr in same building and he is a wee bit taller than 5'8, but he has a lighter step and walks with a slight bounce. He is much better-looking IRL and very pleasant, as is his whole family (this was before Iron Man, but I hear he is still very down-to-earth).

Comon Rob, 5'9.5 is impossible for Mel. He's 5.9 at the max in Mad Max and 5'8.5 seems more realistic. Plus he certainly has lost some height while aging. He's no more than 5'8 nowadays.

Rob, if tom hardy at 5'9" and mel are close in height at that premiere of Mad max and he's wearing 2 - 2.5 inch cowboy boots. I think Mel could in fact be down in the 5'8.5" range!! What do you think?

Yea plus I forget people have eye level disadvantages and advantage. Like my eyes to the top of my head is 4.75 inches and my eyes to chin is like 4.3 I believe I might be wrong I need to check again but my eyes to top of my head is longer then my eyes to chin. Maybe that's why I think some 5'9 1/2 guys are like holy crap I could see him definitely being around and another I would second guess and think their an legit 5'10+ plus it's that way with 5'9 guys and 5'10 guys looking 5'11. But it's cool there was this one guy who says he says 5'9 he comes up too me and says are you 5'9 1/2. I was like yes, and he's like that makes sense your an half an inch taller then me, but another guy was telling him not me your not 5'9 your 5'8 James easily has two inches on you. Plus when people seem eye to eye I look at an reflection their eyes match the middle part of my nose.

Kurt Russel was taller than him , but than he does look only 3 inches less than Glover now and both were standing fully and in low shoes , I'd rule out 5'10.5 and 5 '8 . 5 '9.5 is fine.

A magazine article on film stars' heights published in '96 had Gibson at 5'8 1/2" in shoes, which would make him about an inch shorter barefoot. I think this is actually accurate. In 1995 when he appeared on Letterman promoting "Braveheart", he had cowboy boots on (which add about 2"). Standing right next to Letterman, who at that time I would've estimated to be around 6'2 1/2" in shoes (I believe he actually admitted to this height), Gibson stood around 5 inches shorter- making him 5'9 1/2" in cowboy boots, hence 5'7 1/2" barefoot-maybe 5'7 3/4"-??

Perhaps the only actor getting up there in years I've seen who appears to be taller than he used to be-?? I mean in his early films like "Mrs. Soffel", "Year of Living Dangerously", the first "Lethal Weapon", "Tequila Sunrise", etc.. he looks like he could be as low as 5'7"-5'8", but in recent years the guy looks more like 5'10"-5'10 1/2" maybe even-?? Maybe the short jokes have finally caught up with him, so he went with some major lifts-?? One photo in the past five or so years even had him looking as tall if not taller than 6' Denzel Washington-?? LOL I'll put him at 5'8" barefoot.

Jamie , going by Glover's peak of 6'3 , Mel looks like a 5 '11 with him meaning he'd measure 5'11.5 at least or 6 ft in cowboy boots , take away another inch because boots add 2 inches than he would look 5 ft 10 , now if he had lifts in boots he might be 5 '9 , no way a flat 5'8 , 5 ft 9 min unless Glover was under 6 '3.

Mel Gibson needs to have a serious downgrade, and most people who worked with Gibson claimed he is 5'8". I believe in an interview he one time said that he was that tall. I have said it before that most actors seem to give there height in shoes rather than barefoot like professional athletes.

5'9.5 is pushing it I think. I would place him much closer to a soft 5'9 at his peak. Especially when you consider his hair in most movies looks to "add" another inch or two.
