American actor best remembered for roles in films such as Psycho, 12 Angry Men, Breakfast at Tiffany's, A Thousand Clowns, All the President's Men, Little Big Man, The Taking of Pelham One Two Three and Tora! Tora! Tora!. On TV he appeared in Archie Bunker's Place.

I suspect that he wore lifts at times or/and the directors did tricks to reduce the height difference between the actors. There didn't look 8 inches between him and Peck in Cape Fear. Probably about right though.

Oh right! The late Martin Balsam, who passed on in 1996 at the age of 75, was in The Sentinel, as well as the original Psycho. 👌
This great actor gets 5ft6.5. 🕯️

I remember Balsam in the Twilight Zone episode "The New Exhibit". The actress playing his wife wore ultra-flat ballet slippers (obviously to not tower over him) and appeared the same height as him.

In a episode of the Twilight Zone he was towered by the women. They had 3 inch heels but the maid in the episode was a good 4 inches taller than him with heels on and the main actress was the same height as him with heels on. 5'4 comes to mind when i think of Martin Balsam. 5'4

For the record, his daughter Talia was the first wife of George Clooney. He swore that he would never get married again.

Yeah, I've read that too but I believe Balsam actually recorded it and was replaced entirely in post-production, it would have been interested to see how Balsam's voice performance would have stacked against Douglas Rains'. Balsam was also for a time George Clooney's father-in-law, that would be a fun Thanksgiving dinner.

Haha the book I'm reading on Kubrick states that Balsam was considered for the voice of HAL 9000 in 2001 Space but was considered "too American"!!

Don't know what's going in this shot with John Cassavetes and Charlton Heston, Balsam must be standing on lower grounding, there's no way Cassavetes had that much on him I think.

I thought in the crowd with 12 Angry Men, Balsam could look 5'7" range at times.

Linked a few pictures and he does look 5'6" range in most but thought he could look near 5'7" at times in the past.

Hard to pick just 10 for this excellent actor...but Rob, could you add Cape Fear and Hmobre to his credits?
Arch Stanton said on 3/Nov/14
Don't forget his Oscar winner A Thousand Clowns!!

He was one of those shorter guys like Edward G. who have an authoritative demeanour and presence in which their lack of height really has no bearing on how you perceive them.

Nice one. Spot on I think. I've seen all of the above films, there's some real gems there.
