More like 5'9 7/8" with the lean, and 5'10.25" without. The difference between the top of Rob's and John's heads are no more than 1.75"

Just saw BBC1 with Luther Blisset and John Barnes next to each other. Blisset was listed as 180cm in his playing days and he is noticeably taller than Barnes, even though he's now in his 60s.

Looks around 5 cm taller than Rob, based on the photo. Thus would put him in the 5'10-5'10.25 range. Reasonable listing.

My sister, who is 5'7 at best, once met john Barnes and Kenny dalglish (together) at an airport. She knows her football and got talking to them. She reckoned dalglish was no taller than her and Barnes was only slightly taller. She doesn't wear heels so footwear could have been similar. Barnes looks 5'9 next to terry butcher.

I'm only seeing a 1.5-inch difference, not 2 inches. Could be 5'9.5 for this guy, but maybe it's because he's leaning.

I used to see a lot of ex football players on the flight down to London from Manchester. I saw John and put him around this height. I also stood close to Rodney Marsh who is about 5ft 11, Dwight Yorke was about 5ft 8-9

Editor Rob: when you look at Barnes with a guy like Terry Butcher back in the day I think it showed he was never a 6ft player.


Yes it's obvious when you really look, he looks shorter than 5 ft 10 there, but if you just look at him and his powerful build without knowing anything else you'd think he was a big guy I think.
