I’ve just watched a terribly sad episode of Downton Abbey, in which Jessica’s Sybil dies of eclampsia shortly after giving birth to a daughter. She was only 24. 🥲

Eclampsia, also known as toxaemia during childbirth, was still commonplace during the era Downton covers, which was 1912
until 1926. Her husband is understandably in shock.

If this dreadful condition even effected the upper classes, it’s frightening to think how badly the less fortunate suffered.

Lovely Jessica, as the winsome young Mary in 'Jamaica Inn', looks tiny next to the drunken and abusive Sean Harris, who is married to her Auntie, played by Joanne Whalley. I put her at about 5ft3, until I had the chance to compare her to Joanne and then, in the second episode, the petite Shirley Henderson.

I don't watch 'Downtown Abbey', but I have been watching this rather exotic-looking brunette take the key role in part one of a three parter called 'Jamaica Inn'.
I have had the opportunity to compare her to Joanne Whalley, who I am extremely familiar with indeed! In this production, you can certainly notice that Joanne is down to 5ft2! I swear she was 5ft3 as the delightfully cheeky Christine Keiler* in 'Scandal', but in 'Jamaica Inn', Jo is 5ft2 and Jessica looks a convincing 5ft4-and-a-half next to her, and there have been many incidents of that; they are playing auntie and niece! Not only have I been able to compare Jessica with Joanne. The tiny 5ft tall Shirley Henderson also stars in this, as does Matthew McNulty, 5ft9, Sean Harris, 5ft11.5 I reckon (he is the joint tallest of all the male members of the cast), and much taller than Jessica, not to mention Joanne, who doesn't even reach Sean's shoulders!
I think there is plenty of evidence from this first episode of the three, that Jessie is 5ft4.5, no more, no less!

She does look that height but I was a bit puzzled when I came across a Telegraph article when they describe her as "Short and muscular, boyish even" because I would consider her height quite average.
