American actor best remembered for roles in films such as The Hustler, Gigot, Requiem for a Heavyweight, Skidoo, Smokey and the Bandit. On TV he had a memorable role as Ralph Kramden in The Honeymooners.

Jackie Gleason looked deceptively taller in ‘The Honeymooners’ as Ralph Cramden. I would have guessed his height to be around 6’2.” I wonder if he wore lifts to appear in that role.

Jackie Gleason was 6' and one of the greatest comic actors EVER! Especially in Smokey And The Bandit. But why did Sherriff Buford Thomas Justice (Gleason) chase Burt Reynolds from Dallas to Atlanta like he did? One gets the impression watching this colorful 1977 comedy Gleason chased Burt for trying to smuggle Coors beer from Dallas to Atlanta since back then Coors was
Banned from being sold east of Houston. But that didn't trigger the "wildest goose chase" in moviedom! Burt picked up a runaway bride (5'3" Sally Field) who was to marry Sherriff Justice's son! Once Burt kidnapped little Carrie (Field),the chase was nonstop! (Carrie wanted to be a model but back then despite modest success now in 1977 THERE WERE NO PETITE MODELS! And Gleason didn't even know the Coors was smuggled!

Rob, don't you think you need a peak height, and "later years" height here? I remember that episode of "The Honeymooners" joe bloggs mentions below, where Ralph claims 6 feet, but they measure him at 5'11" (in shoes). I think the 5'10.5" listing here for him could be right for a peak height, but could go as low as 5'9" by the time he made his last film, with Tom Hanks, "Nothing in Common."

can't really do that, when people die they just go back the peak height.
CelebHeights is the only place you grow taller when you leave this earth.

Where did this listing come from, Rob? I thought he was six feet, at least that's what they were pushing when enormous Brad Garrett played him. I can see from another look that he's only 1-1.5 inches taller than Paul Newman and Steve McQueen, but that still makes him near 5'11" I think.

Also, could you "best known for The Hustler, Gigot, Requiem for a Heavyweight, Skidoo, Smokey and the Bandit and his role as Ralph Kramden in The Honeymooners".
Editor Rob
he might have been nearer that yeah in his 30-40's

I caddied for The Great One one time back in the 60's. I'm 6'1 and he was easily three or four inches shorter. He was a GREAT loop, and funny as the devil on the course... his jokes could not be repeated on tv! :)

In an episode of the Honeymooners, I believe the Gleason character Ralph will be made redundant if his weight-for-height was too far above normal; the numbers, if I recall properly, were 5ft11 and 268lb. Since the measurement was going to be taken in 12 hours, Ralph had no chance of getting under 268, but with a little stretching, he and Ed thought, he'd make 6ft, for which Ralph's weight of 270 would have been just barely permissible. Somehow I figure it was easier for the writers and actors just to use the real numbers(5ft11/270)

Gleason on this site. My father drank straight Gordon's gin with the great one at Toot's. The picture says 5' 10". Shiela MacRae is really nice.

Gleason is tricky. Being Heavier has a way of making one look shorter. Jackie claimed to be 6 feet but he looked shorter. I would say he was 5-10 as an older man, and 5-11 maybe 5-11.5 in Dumont years.

I caddied for Gleason one time .. he was about 5'10. Funnier in person than on tv.. although a different kind of joke..:)

I remember as a boy watching footage of Gleason golfing with 5'10" Richard Nixon and Gleason looked a lot taller.

I recently watched "The Toy" in which a 63 year-old Gleason was the same height in shoes as Richard Pryor was in socks and a spidey uniform. I think by that age Gleason was under 5'9"

Now This one I wondered about--from watching 'Honeymooners' or 'Smokey and the Bandit', it's really hard to tell. I figured about 5-11 max.
