Jack was hilarious in Grumpy Old Men with Walter Matthau and Ann Margret!
5ft8.75.
Terry DiPiazza said on 5/Mar/23
Just watched Jack Lemmon on the 1966 Oscar telecast. He is speaking to Bob Hope onstage and is considerably shorter than Hope. At least two inches. Can’t see how he could be over 5’8”.
Chaos Control 6'2.5 said on 8/Mar/21
Yeah but in Britain we use both
Chaos Control 6'2.5 said on 6/Mar/21
@Dribble pretty sure Rob is British
Editor Rob
The biggest proportion who visit the site are from US, followed by UK.
In the UK we still use feet/inches quite a lot when talking about height, but the younger generation do use metric more than the 40+ I feel.
Dribble said on 2/Mar/21
This is USA. Metric means nothing to us because we don't want to know. Germany and Japan did NOT win the war! Feet, inches, and pounds please!!
Editor Rob
The site is global so provides both imperial and metric.

Jack Lemmon was born on this day 95 years ago. 🎂🍋
5ft9
RIP Jack Lemmon XX
Miss Sandy Cowell said on 21/Dec/19
I just saw a comment about Jack Lowden and it resulted in the urge to check out Jack Lemmon! I enjoyed his funny performance in 'Grumpy Old Men' and think it must have been the instigator for the comedy 'moan-your-@rse-off' programme, starring a variety of stars, many of whom were only just approaching middle-age!
Wow! Jack's career, I see, goes right back to the 1950s.
I'd like to give Jack 🍋 5ft9.

he was exactly 175 cm tall
Rampage(-_-_-)Clover said on 29/Mar/17
Rob, is this guy gonna get added eventually?
Editor Rob
maybe. Adding pages is an ongoing process and I do it at a speed and manner which doesn't have negative impact on the visibility in search engines.
Rampage(-_-_-)Clover said on 29/Mar/17
Rob, yeah he's definitely lost height today. It's evident in Gone Girl and in House of Cards which he popped up in briefly. His name is David Clennon and he's a great character actor. But I think 6ft1 flat is a bit low for his peak, especially if the two guys in Thirtysomething are the heights they've been mentioned at. He could have been 187cm
Rampage(-_-_-)Clover said on 26/Mar/17
Rb, how tall do you think this guy is?

He's been listed 6ft1 in places but I think he was nearer 6ft2 at peak
Editor Rob
he did at least have a 6ft 2 mention...today he might be near 6ft, 6ft 1.5 isn't impossible.
GP said on 21/Nov/16
I think his son was correct. He was 5'8" and when he was older he was down to 5'6" which is what he looked in Glengarry Ross. One of the greatest actors ever, never seen any movie of his that he wasn't great.
Rampage(-_-_-)Clover said on 19/Nov/16
Nice spot, Arch. Probably got that from his mom's side
Arch Stanton said on 19/Nov/16
Chris Lemmon looking pretty tall with a 90s Hogan I think
Click Here 6 ft 2 seems a good shout.
Arch Stanton said on 19/Nov/16
@Rob, any chance of adding his son Chris Lemmon? Looked noticeably tall with Fred Ward in Swing Shift. See him here with his father
Click Here Click Here and Kevin Spacey
Something close to 6 ft 2 is possible? Knew immediately in seeing him that he was Jack's son despite his height, these stars tend to have strong genes!
Arch Stanton said on 26/May/16
Got a good look at him barefoot with Anne Bancroft in a heel in the Prisoner of Second Avenue and he looked a bit taller so with her he really looked no less than 5'9.
Gonzalo said on 3/May/16
1´74-75 is what he looks to me. Very similar in height to Curtis in Some like it hot. Avanti should be mentioned in the list above, over Mr Roberts
Rampage(-_-_-)Clover said on 13/Mar/16
Matthau looked near 6ft3 in his prime. I wouldn't go lower than 189cm peak. I think 5ft9 is fair for Lemmon.
jtm said on 21/Aug/15
i agree with his son that he jack was 5'8. never really looked 5'9 to me.
Arch Stanton said on 18/Aug/15
@Rob, No way was Walter 6 ft 4!! Otherwise Tommy Tune was 6 ft 8! Actually at times Walter could look 6 ft 2 flat but in Cactus Flower with Ingrid Bergman he didn't look far off 6 ft 3, I think you're right with 6'2.5. He generally looked about 5 inches taller than Lemmon though who didn't look under 5 ft 9.
Editor Rob said on 16/Aug/15
His son Chris, in a book on him called Walter Six-Four and his Dad Five-Eight.
Arch Stanton said on 3/Mar/15
Rob why don't you link pages to the page equivalents on the weight website? Or don't you still own it? Wouldn't it be best to just merge all the weight once and put listings on here?
Editor Rob
those pages are just legacy pages, I haven't touched them for a few years but didn't remove them because they have a trickle of traffic. It really is hard enough trying to guess heights, but weight is a lot more variable and harder to say.
Arch Stanton said on 3/Mar/15
You actually have him at 162lbs on the weight site which makes more sense I guess!
Arch Stanton said on 2/Mar/15
Not sure he really was 182 pounds though. Later in the film Terry Thomas says to him "We'll have you back to 160 pounds". That's nearer what I'd guess he was back then, he was quite slight of build in those days.
Arch Stanton said on 2/Mar/15
Rob can you add "In How To Murder Your Wife" Lemmon's character claimed to be 182 pounds. See 57 minutes on the Terry Thomas link I sent of him and Lemmon.
Sam said on 5/Jan/15
Lemmon was similar height to Douglas, here he's standing looser than Douglas:

& to Paul Newman.

Don't know why Newman looks so much taller here though, could be some warping going on or he's standing on something.

Since 9 films are listed above, could you add his harrowing performance in Days of Wine and Roses? A rare actor, he could be very funny and charming in his comedic roles but his dramatic parts were really rather intense and dark. Hard to think of a lead performance as bleak or hard to watch (in a good way) as his ones in Wine and Roses, Glengarry and Save the Tiger.
Realist said on 21/May/14
Tony Curtis,Jack Lemmon,Marlon Brando,Paul Newmann,Kirk Douglas all where a little less than 5'9 at peak. 5'8.5-5'8.75 for all of them. Above average height during their years now they would be low average.Though there were already loads of six footers in hollywood by then. I would say average would have been about 170-171.
Arch Stanton said on 1/May/14
Could look a weak 5'9" next to Fonda and Powell in Mister Roberts but upstaged both of the Hollywood heavyweights with his Oscar winning performance. Love him to bits.
the shredder said on 18/Apr/14
I hear He and alec Baldwin were Oscar worthy in Glenngarry , but funny because Pacino is the Actor to get the nomination
Sam said on 17/Apr/14
How is Arch the only commentator on this all-time great actor. Lemmon never phoned it in but I would rank The Apartment & Days of Wine and Roses up there with Glengarry Glen Ross as his best; of course, he was also great in Some Like It Hot, The China Syndmore, The Fortune Cookie, I could go on.
As to height, I think he looks pretty much 5'9" on the nose next to 5'9.5" Paul Newman.

Editor Rob
there has been comments but only last few years exist in the database, so 2005-2010, a lot were lost during that period.
Arch Stanton said on 16/Apr/14
Thanks for that. Glengarry was a great film all around of course. Yep he was great in that. The best I've seen him act in is Save the Tiger which he won the Oscar for. Especially his muddling of lines during his speech and his stoned rantings about old jazz musicians and legends.
Arch Stanton said on 15/Apr/14
Rob can you add films like Some Like It Hot, The Apartment, Save The Tiger, Glengarry Glen Ross, Grumpy Old Men, The Odd Couple, Mister Roberts, Missing and The China Syndrome?
Watching Save the Tiger now. He can look a strong 5'9" in Save the Tiger actually, he won an Oscar for that.
Editor Rob
I thought in Glengarry that was the best I'd seen him act...
Arch Stanton said on 19/Jan/14
Jane Fonda looks about 2 inches taller than him in those 3 inch wedges, something doesn't add up...
Arch Stanton said on 19/Jan/14
Looks a weak 5'9" in The China Syndrome.
Arch Stanton said on 13/Oct/13
More 3 inches shorter than Spacey actually.
Arch Stanton said on 13/Oct/13
Rob in Glengarry Glen Ross he looks two inches shorter than Kevin Spacey!
Arch Stanton said on 31/Aug/13
Rob I think you're out with this one, he's shorter than Tony Curtis in Some Like It Hot by about 1.5 inches. No way is he taller than Curtis! More 172-3 range, Curtis I wouldn't put under 5'9".
Carter said on 21/Jul/11
I'll go against the majority here and say that he always looked a solid 5'10 to me, at least in his older movies. Maybe he was very well proportioned or something.
guyfrommars said on 29/Mar/11
A very little over 5'8" in his prime, and around 5'6" in his older days. In Grumpy Old Men he was only marginally taller than Burgess Meredith (who was barely 5'5" in his 80s).
adam said on 27/Feb/09
Lemmon was 5-9 likely yes but Matthau was definitely 6-3. Matthau has always been listed 6-3, he looked 6-3 and Frank2 said he was a strong 6-3 in his prime.
Andrew said on 24/Nov/08
Watching Some Like It Hot, sometimes Curtis looks taller, sometimes Lemmon.
