American actor best remembered for roles in films like All About Eve, Twelve O'Clock High, The Day the Earth Stood Still, Earth vs. the Flying Saucers, Rawhide, Garden of Evil, Monkey Business, Meet Me in St. Louis, and Elmer Gantry. He was once described as standing 6ft tall and weighing 170 pounds.

Yeah and Sanders was about as good an example of a proper 6 ft 3 as you can get from that period and always looked it (edged out 6'2.5 Joel McCrea in Foreign Correspondent etc..) I think 182 might be a better shout actually.

Rob any chance of adding Charles Coburn? Pretty sure you've seen him in several films, he was a major character actor. Really liked him. Near 6 ft isn't a stretch as a young man, I'd probably pin him at 5'11.5 peak, but in his late 60s and early 70s he was looking as you say 5'10 range.

Also, next to George Sanders, Marlowe could look almost six foot, closer than some actors who claim six feet as their height on here. I see what you mean, Niven can look 2 inches under Grant and Marlowe looks an inch or less shorter.

Yeah, Charles Coburn would be a great addition, he was a very likeable character actor...I think my favorite roles of his were the conning but loving father in The Lady Eve & the real-life Cupid in The More the Merrier. Next to Joel McCrea, Coburn can pull of 5'10" to 5'11" range, I think a 5'11" peak is believable.

I know what you mean though Sam, in some scenes like the tree one Marlowe could look the same height if not a bit taller. I think the ground around the tree might have been a little higher though. The best comparison is in the kitchen earlier on and I think Grant had him by about an inch. Marlowe looked 6 ft in that film. I got a good look at Charles Coburn and I think he might have been 5'10.5" by then, so peak he might have been almost 6 ft actually. He might have been similar to Marlowe peak.

Charles Coburn definitely wasn't 6 ft!! He was looking weak 5 ft 10 next to Cary Grant in Monkey Business but he was early 70s at the time. He might have been 5 ft 11 peak but I highly doubt he was ever 6 ft.

Sam I'm surprised to see Charles Coburn missing still.. I did request him before....

Yeah in Monkey Business he was barely shorter than Cary Grant, Grant had him by about an inch I think. Looked taller in comparison than Niven did in The Bishop's Wife.

There's one scene in Monkey Business where Grant forced Marlowe against a tree to get tied up (as Grant has reverted to mentally being a child) and they both stand upright, Grant definitely has an edge but not a huge one. They do look similar in photos. 181 cm is better, yeah thanks.

New 181cm guy

181 seems good, thanks. He looked about the same sort of height as Niven I thought.

From Sam's pics, I would say Cary Grant and Hugh Marlowe were VERY close in height. In fact, Marlowe looks taller. Upgrade him to 182/183?
Arch Stanton said on 2/Aug/14
Rob any chance of an upgrade to 181-2? I thought he looked a solid 5'11 er rather than a weak 5'11 guy like Niven.
Editor Rob
it is a possibility he was that, he was called 6ft at times, at least in media...maybe 181 is ok
Arch Stanton said on 2/Aug/14
He could look 182 at times certainly Sam, that's why I said to Rob I think 181cm might be better than 180 and a happy medium.
Arch Stanton said on 1/Aug/14
Thanks for adding him! Yeah, somewhere around the 5 ft 11 mark. 180 or 1 is OK. I did actually compare him to Milland I think it was in one film though and I thought actually he came off looking around 182, although Milland could often look a flat 6'1".. He looked pretty similar to Niven in proportions.

Always nice to see the additional of a talented character actor from Golden Age Hollywood.
At times he could look more than this. Cary Grant looked barely an inch over Marlowe, actually they were fairly close, although some (not me) would argue Grant as only 183 cm.

And can seem more 3 not 4 inches under the pretty much unquestioned 6'3" George Sanders.

I wonder if Marlowe was a cm or so over this listing.
