5ft9 is a fair claim, imo.
He WAS a big guy in the mid-90's to early 2000's. He used to be a weightlifter with a lot of dense muscle and got up to over 200 pounds. Today he's about 160 pounds.

Walked behind and stood next to Mr Rollins five years ago (2016) when he was in Auckland. I am 178cm and a fairly muscular (though slightly podgy) 88kg [193 lbs]. I was very surprised to find that Mr Rollins, who I imagined was fairly enormous, was most definitely both shorter (somewhere around the listed 5'9") and lighter than me (I'd estimate about 176-180lb). Being of a very similar build and stature to him I would estimate that, against some of these 'over 200lb' estimates, when he was younger he was in the 190-195lb range [which can look surprisingly big if you're lean and carrying your weight in your upper-body]

He got older and I think injuries accumulated, so he decided not to lift heavy anymore. He still trains, but he's more focused on cardio and high-volume, low-intensity work. I believe he's mentioned he's in the 170-lb range now - as a younger man I believe he was 190-200lb (at a pretty low body fat %).

Yeah he's honest with his claim but noticeably below average male height is a bit of a stretch, he never was towered by the other Black Flag guys even though Ginn was taller, but I do remember some doc where he visited war-wounded soldiers and described himself as a short guy and was quite a bit under a lot of the soldiers that could stand.

Rollins is one the few celebrities who looks way taller than he actually is, thanks to his muscular physique and somewhat intimidating face. I wonder how he would have turned out if he had passed the audition of Negan in the Walking Dead (a character whose appearance and personality were directly inspired by Rollins).
------
I disagree. Rollins has always been noticeably below average male height, but still has a presence and also a physical presence because of his build and power. I've never looked at him and thought he was tall, but I've thought he's powerful both personality wise and physically. I've never assumed he must be tall with it. To me, being tall does not automatically give you presence or physical presence.
Animus said on 2/Sep/18
@viper
I strongly disagree. Even if they possessed similar muscle size, (which is questionable) the density of the muscles as well as the bones would be different. Rollins has rather small (or at least not above-average) wrists which indicate a smaller frame size than what is typical of NFL running backs. 215 lbs on a 5’9 frame is enormous - the backs in the NFL who post those numbers typically carry some excess body fat (although probably still in the teens).
viper said on 30/Aug/18
IMO he looks well over 200 pounds in the late 90s clip. He looks similar physically to 5-9 215 pound running backs in the NFL
Animus said on 28/Aug/18
Rollins used to have an exceptionally thick neck and to be quile well-built, but he was never much over 200 lbs. To people who think he was near 220 lbs, compare him to 50 Cent, who is 5'11¾ and has been about 220 lbs. There is a big size discrepancy.
A lean 200 lbs is big for a 6'0 guy, so don't underestimate how big a 5'9 can look at that weight.
viper said on 26/Aug/18
Wow, he looks well over 200 pounds to me
Animus said on 25/Aug/18
I don't see a huge size discrepancy between those videos. If he was 190-195lbs with Howard Stern, he is around 200lbs in the earlier interviews. 5-10lbs of muscle mass can give a noticeably different apperance. He is nowhere near 220lbs as was previously claimed. 200 lbs (+-5lbs) of mostly lean body mass is a lot for a 5ft9 guy.

And that was 4 years ago. He's even thinner today. In 2001 he was down to 195 pounds (was larger in 1996-1998). He's lost a lot of weight since the 1990's.

Had you met him in the late 90's, he was anything but slim. He pretty much stopped lifting heavy weights by 2000 (by his own admission) and trimmed down a lot and even more so after 2007. By 2011 he was VERY thin with no muscle left at all. He eats next to nothing today.

He said himself that he was around 195lbs at his biggest.
I hate when people misquote him. He was asked by Howard Stern in 2001 how much he weighed IN 2001 when on the show and he said 190-195. That was his weight in 2001. Henry was at his HEAVIEST and most muscular in 1997/1998. He was FAR larger in the late 1990's (1996-1998) than he was in 2001, because he had stopped doing powerlifting because he was messing up his joints and he began to eat less. SO, if a 2001 version of Henry who was smaller than he was in 1996-1998 said he weighed 190-195 in 2001, then I can GUARANTEE you that he was quite a bit over 200 pounds in the late 90's.

He is noticeably shorter than 178cm Andrew Lincoln, so with camera angles and elevator shoes, it could have been possible to make him appear larger (much like Tom Hardy as Bane). Jeffrey Dean Morgan does a good job but he is a tad too skinny to be Negan, so could Rollins have been an even better casting choice?

Hi, I met Henry Rollins in Oxford in the UK after one of his spoken word shows a couple of years ago. On stage he looked muscular and tall and talked about weight lifting and such. On meeting him I was amazed at how small in stature he seemed. I am 5 feet 10 and around 12.5 - 13 Stone I had shoes on that gave me maybe 2 inches max. I was just way taller and wider framed than him and I'm fairly slim really. I would say he may be 5 feet 8 or 5 five seven max. The ground was flat also can't remember what shoes he had on sorry. Hope this helps

Henry has admitted to have stopped lifting weights in recent years. He is touring too much and has become a vegetarian. He was over 200 pounds in the mid-late 1990's and today is around 150-160 pounds. His weight loss became noticeable in the early 2000's. He admitted on Howard Stern to be around 190-195 pounds in 2001 and he WAS heavier in 1995-1999.

This is no knock on Henry at all, I think he's awesome. But, I was struck by how small he looked in a pic my friend posted on his myspace page with him. My friend is about 5'9" (yes, they seemed the same height) but weighs only 125 lbs soaking wet, is actually a kind of sickly guy. But, standing next to Rollins he looked nearly the same size! I think Henry has one of those frames that lends itself to looking muscular and massive (he's strong and fit no doubt) when standing alone, but is actually more compact- and this comes out when standing next to someone. This is evidenced in the photos with Glenn as well, you can see what I'm saying. Again, he's a fit dude, but probably weighs less than 150 lbs if that.

He began cutting down in 2000-2001 (he claimed he was down to 190-195 on Howard Stern at that time) and has lost even more size in the last 3-4 years (a considerable amount).
Glenn, I have read 5'11" for Henry. NO idea why he only claims 5'9" for himself though.

From what i read in interviews and videos on youtube, he still workouts regulary, but he is 47 and in great shape for his age, being much bigger could cause him health problems.

Danimal said on 1/Mar/08
Glenn, I agree with you. I've even read as high as 5'11", but why then does HE claim he is only 5'9". If he claims he is 5'9", I doubt he is taller than that today at 46-47.
GSP said on 29/Feb/08
I dont get get. He looks no taller than you at all in the pic above. How could a 5'10 man look then same as or under someone who wakes at 5'8?
Nas, Kinese, now rollinjs....these guys all claim 5'8 5'8 and 5'9 yet according to glenn they are all 5'10.?/
This is getting out of hand.
So all of these celebs are downgrading themselves by at least an inch? I mean this in the nicest possible way but Glenn have you been measured by a doctors stadiometer?
RedSonya said on 20/Feb/08
I met Rollins last year. I'm 5'8" and he was a couple of inches taller than me. So I'd say the 5'9"/5'10" range is right. He is smaller than you'd think (but still hot).

i enjoyed the comment from the guy saying he's 5'10.5, and that henry is 5'7 because henry came up to his chin. um, that would make henry 5'2-5'3.5, depending on the size of your head, so your perception is WAY off.
dave said on 26/Oct/07
Nice guy or not he definitely doesn't look any taller than you Glenn. If he was 5'9.5 this picture is sure an illusion.
glenn said on 20/Aug/07
uso? he told me he realised his fans were his bread and butter.i told him i heard he was a dick and i was afraid to get a negative reaction from him when first meeting him.he was great.
Danimal said on 20/Aug/07
He's definitely mellowed out over the years and works for USO nowadays.
glenn said on 19/Aug/07
he also treated fans and autograph dealers like **** for years too.he admitted it to me.the ugly stories i heard were true.i also read 5-10.5 for him too.i buy 5-9.5.
Danimal said on 18/Aug/07
Henry is VERY honest. If he says 5'9.2", then that is EXACTLY what he is then. No more use debating it. Henry is BRUTALLY honest about everything. I've chatted with him via email many times. Great guy.
Sjbrown said on 18/Aug/07
I heard he's 5'8 and 2/3 I emailed him to ask him and he measuered himself and said that hes 5'9 and 1/5. I still think that he's 5'8 and 2/3 because I saw him on tv once, standing next to a wax figure of Elvis who was 6' 0½. I eyeballed it and I'm pretty sure I'm correct.
Danimal said on 8/Aug/07
Henry personally answers his own emails if you go to his website. That's his personal email address, as well as his phone number on there. We correspond with each other by email. He's as real and down to earth as you can get.

Weightlifting in moderation (i.e. for health) is good for you, nobodies disputing that. Heavy lifting, regardless of form, isn't as good for you, though...
Anonymous said on 7/Aug/07
Just to chime in on the weightlifting thing: Lifting does not make you shorter. If anything, it gives you better "natural" posture, especially deadlifts, since they strengthen your traps. Sure, it may accelerate your natural height loss for the day, but there is no permanent damage done from proper lifting; in fact, it's very healthy for you, and actually increases bone density, as someone has already mentioned. It's when people who don't know what they're doing, like using improper form on exercises like the deadlift and squat, end up herniating the discs in their backs, and then claim that doing these exercises are dangerous. Personally, after reading this site, I've realized that I lose about 1/2" after a workout with heavy squats, yet in the morning I'm right back at 182cm.

I saw Rollins in 2003 in NC. Im about 6' tall, maybe just shy. I was much taller than he was. He was slouching slighty, but I'd have to say hes about 5'7'' or 5' 8''. No way is he almost 6'. I had half-a head on him.
Leung said on 1/May/07
5’9” sounds right, he looks that height in all his movies. Even though Rollins usually only does small parts in movies he is a cool actor.

he looks 5'9 indeed.

Toured with him at one point in the 90's. I'm between 5'11 - 6ft, and more often than not he appeared to hover around 5'10". I think he's taller than 5'9. While built, he's not broad.
Glenn said on 23/Nov/06
The photo came out that way,but I remember he had an inch on me.
Markus said on 22/Nov/06
Glenn looks the same height or even half an inch taller in my opinion.
Looks like his head is small too, just look at the length between his chin and his eyebrows, and compare it to Glenns.
Franco said on 16/Nov/06
5.9 is perfect, he is into body weights so he's accurate, also he sing songs about self esteem so he have a lot of it, so i doubt he'd like on his height at all, he would still be a lion whatever height he is.
i love that guy music and personality!
manicpanic said on 8/Nov/06
ill buy 5'9.
probably like 5'9.5" 5'9.75" in the morning. so he rounds up to 5'10
sometimes. Makes sense to me.
Glenn said on 8/Nov/06
I read 5-10.5 in a newspaper.I know it doesnt look it in the pic,but I noticed he was slightly taller than me.
Danimal said on 7/Nov/06
He's been listed at short as 5'6" and as high as 5'11", but from his own mouth, he's 5'9". The man is known to be one of the most honest guys around. I believe him. He's 5'9" and between 190-195 pounds according to him, as of 2001 (he looked heavier in 1997).
LuckyLuciano said on 19/Oct/06
I saw Black Flag AT LEAST 20 times he is 5'7". He wears "sensible" shoes that accentuate his height and has very good posture.
Jim said on 9/Sep/06
Yep, I saw him in Vancouver a few years back, and he was talking about how somebody said on the radio he wouldn't box him or something. "Why not?" Rollins replied, "I'm like, five nine..."
Glenn said on 5/Sep/06
No,Im serious Danimal and Sf.my friend LOOKS like he lost some.he claimed 5-10.5 but now looks 5-9.
Colin said on 4/Sep/06
Absolutely no taller than 5'7. He played Atlanta in 1999 and my wife and met him after the show. I JUST went to the doctor two days ago and was certified 5'10.5. Rollins was barely up to my chin and we took pictures. This guy is 5'7 and not an inch taller.
Danimal said on 29/Aug/06
They say that lifting weights can stunt one's growth when the bones are still growing. Besides, it's possible your friend originally measured himself in the morning and then at night and was shorter as a result and besides, he could have lost an inch for many other reasons. Maybe he has bad posture and a slight curvature of the spine?
sf said on 28/Aug/06
I still wonder if Glenn was straightend up if he wouldn't be a tad bit taller than Rollins. Plus, they're basically side by side, almost the exact pose with their left shoulders both in front slightly, so I think this is a good picture for comparison. If Glenn is 5'7 and 1/2 or so, hard to give Rollins any more than that.
And, weightlifting does NOT make you lose height. Proper weightlifting strengthens your muscles and makes your bones more dense over time - they are actually thicker and stronger. Even squats, done correctly, will not make you lose height. With proper squating you are arching your back and not putting that much weight on your back.

no idea on pavement here, sometimes on sidewalks you could have swing in height one way or other
Glenn said on 28/Aug/06
Whats weird Danimal is that its suppossed to be a myth, but my weight lifting friends coincendently or not, lost an inch.
Danimal said on 28/Aug/06
Lmeister, since when does lifting weights make you lose height. I've been lifting weights for years. In fact, lifting weights is great for your posture and strengthens your bones.
D. Ray Morton said on 28/Aug/06
It's finally here! Awesome.
Lmeister said on 28/Aug/06
I think nowadays he is around 5'8''. 5'9'' in his youth heck he could have been even 5'10'', but pumping iron makes U lose height. He looks little bit taller in older pics maybe, 'cause he wasn't so built in the 80's...
Glenn said on 26/Aug/06
He seemed 5-9.I read a bizzare 5-10.5 once.pictures and posture can trick.as we know with Sly.
sf said on 26/Aug/06
ooh this is a tuffy. Beside Glenn, I wouldn't give him much taller than 5'7" cause I think Glenn would be a little taller if he straighened out.
Editor Rob said on 26/Aug/06
Here is the picture of Glenn with 'big' Henry.
Danimal said on 18/Aug/06
Glenn, where is the pic!!!!!!???
Glenn said on 17/Aug/06
I read 5-10.5 once.
Danimal said on 16/Aug/06
I agree. He's 5'9". If anything he may have rounded up a bit, but I doubt it. He weighs 190-195 these days (not as built as he was in 1997), but still is in great shape for 45 years old.
Pavlo said on 16/Aug/06
I was at american university when he was doing a standup act, and clearly remember him saying "though he was short man, 5'9, he will be remembered for..." refering to himself.
I never had a chance to stand next to him, but hes no shorter than 5'7. He's an honest man so leave it 5'9
Danimal said on 1/Aug/06
Maybe he's not tall, but the man is built like a mother, or at least was until the early 2000's.
sickdiculous said on 1/Aug/06
I recently met him and he was an inch or two taler than me, I'm 5'6.
He is way smaller in person.
TNTinCA said on 8/Apr/06
He looked to be about 3 inches shorter than Keanu Reeves in Johnny Mnemonic. Keanu I believe stands at 6'1". That would put Henry at around 5'10". Maybe with the right footwear, that could have added the extra inch. Or he really is 5'10".
Glenn said on 10/Mar/06

I met him. Here in San Francisco. On O'Farrell Street with the VERY TALL Joe Cole. Joe filmed me. I was EYE-TO-EYE with Rollins. I'm 5'4". He's a short guy. I would say he's most likely 5'5", and he's got the thickest neck I've ever seen.

"What?" he asks "Like Sonny? One time I got fan mail from a guy, and I told him I was white and five-foot something, not a six-foot-two, black tenor man. He actually had photos of Sonny Rollins he wanted me to autograph." [when asked if he's ever been mistaken for another famous Rollins]

A good friend of mine and I have both met Rollins at seperate times, and we can't agree on his height; my buddy insists Rollins is 5'6 or so, I'd say 5'9 or 10 is about right. I'm just shy of 6'1, and while I was taller than Rollins, I didn't tower over him.
