You are right 6'4" is way too tall for Superman. He would end up looking very awkward and freakish looking. 5'11"-6'1" is the best height for Superman, Batman and other superheroes. Christian Bale was the ideal height for Batman but his performance left much to be desired. The constant growling, grew tiresome very fast. The Man of Steel movie had many flaws but Cavil's performance as Superman was bang-on, and very good. Cavil was the ideal height for Superman and the movie was a lot better then Superman Returns, more action, for one.

The young Superman from Man of Steel described him ... "I don't think I'd fit in the suit, because Henry Cavill is like 6'4" and 200 pounds or something"
Matt_Thor78 said on 18/Jan/14
In The Man Of Steel he doesnt wear any lift or high sole, so he's a very probably 185 cm. When he's close to K. Costner in the movie he's a young version of Clark Kent, so "downisized" a little with camera effects.

I HAVE TO SAY HENRY IS A DIFFERENT VERSION OF SUPERMAN.
1;HE IS BRITISH
2;HE HAS A HANDSOME AURA WITH A FEEL OF TOUGHNESS.WHILE SUPERMAN HAS BOYISH CHARM
3;HE IS 6'1 NOT THE USAUL 6'3.

Not under 6ft, but I seriously doubt the 6ft1 except as an early morning height OR if Kevin Costner is actually 6ft2! Bulked up and with heels he gave a taller impression, though.

6'0 1/2 - 6'1 seems accurate for Cavil. That is certainly tall enough to be Superman. He looked taller in the movie and his body was pretty jacked.

Aragorn was supposed to be 6'6, but Viggo made people forget all about that. Cavill's a fine superman, and he looks 6'1 in most pictures. I think he could use an upgrade.

He IS too short to play Superman. Superman is supposed to be this strapping, huge fella who towers over everybody. Clark Kent is supposed to be this huge, clumsy fella who towers over everybody. Henry Cavil is too short for Superman, and the movie didn't even bother to disguise that. They could easily find shorter actors to "extra' beside him but nope. The military guys are all taller than him. That guy who spoke to Superman outside the interrogation towered over Superman and that took me right out of the movie. That movie and this doesn't harbour the essence of Superman, period.

Its not that the mythology states he should be 6 4 and 225 pounds. Its just that he is not tall enough to play this role. He isn't. I don't think he made a good superman.

Sorry, but Henry is not under 185 cm.
In The Man Of Steel he just had light soles, and you can watch him in the first images of "The Men from UNCLE" close to the "tower" Armie Hammer (not less 194 cm). He's not just big and with a good posture, but tall too....

You people are all crazy. He played a great superman and I liked seeing a hot superhero. He looks to be a solid 6'1 and doesn't appear to wear lifts like so many other actors, so he is probably secure in his height. And a few inches doesn't make a difference in the movies, they can make people look as big or small as they want. Did anyone see The Green Mile, they made 6ft 5in Michael Clarke Duncan look 7ft tall.
SimeJosif said on 26/Oct/13
I actually like the approach that they took with man of steel, rather than the thin and slender man with broad shoulders, they took the approach of a reasonably tall man with a solid build, an appearance of someone who looks physically superior much like it was in the comics, no one can replace Christopher reeve he was in a league of his own and will always be remembered as the original. He looks a legit 6'0.5 - 6'1
Poek said on 24/Oct/13

Superman is drawn with a ripped physique in the comics because it makes the character more believable as a being of immense power. If Superman was pudgy, the character would be laughable. Cavil's chiseled out of stone physique makes the character more believable.
Balrog said on 24/Sep/13
I agree with your comment, Lorne.
Iceman said on 24/Sep/13
Superman was always ripped and muscular in the comics. Even though the sun gives him his abilities being shredded makes it more believable that he's one of the most powerful beings in the galaxy. If Superman was drawn as being pudgy, the character would be a joke. Cavil's ripped physique makes him more believable as Superman over Tom Welling or Brandon Routh. Demanding that Superman be exactly some made up height (6'3") is far more ridiculous then having a shredded Superman.
Lorne said on 22/Sep/13
For everyone saying he's "big" enough, remember that, logically, superman would not be huge or ripped.why? Because, HE IS F$&@ing SUPERMAN!!! Think about it: it's been made clear that simply being under the yellow sun gives Kal-El unlimited strength. Even as a child he can lift cars. So why on earth would he work out constantly to maintain a physique he doesn't need? I understand he is drawn ripped in the comics, but that is for stylistic purposes. He also has unnecessary red briefs over his outfit in the comics! Much like Batman has black briefs over his grey outfit in the comics, and anime. Yet, the motion picture Batman hasn't had briefs since 1989, because clearly it is ridiculous. Tell me, should batman be made to wear briefs again?(over his outfit, it's his business what's underneath) no! The only reason they had those strange outfits in the first place is because it was easy to draw way back when. It continued because of tradition. But it has no lace in films. Much like cavils. He's not a naturally built guy, Cavill. It is clear he has to work out constantly to maintain. Between that, and his hair dye, he just isn't at all superman, and it is distracting. Nevermind him standing 183-184cm; he isn't superman tall, but as mentioned, he clearly isn't short. With big boots and his excellent posture, he'd look an easy 6'1. So if everything else was perfect, it would be no problem. Just look at Christian Bale. Bale is 182cm, not really what you would consider an ideal height for the Bat. But everything else was perfect; his looks, his style, of course the fact that he is an amazing actor. So the fact he's a little under 6 feet is no problem.(of course, superman hadn't been tall since he ditched the briefs. Bale is actually the tallest, at a solid 182cm, along with 182cm range Kilmer, but that's beside the point, since Burtons Batman had Bat-Lifts to make him look closer to 6ft) Anyway, superman should be a naturally big guy, tall, slender, yet big. Tom Welling is still the perfect example of how a superman should look, 190cm, black hair, naturally big, but not huge or ripped. Reeve also exemplified superman with his build, though I now think Wellings 190cm frame was perfect, even better than Reeve's, thought at 193cm, and slender, but broad shoulders, was arguably just as good. But not Cavill. Between Cavill as superman, and Affleck as Batman, we are about to enter a dark age for movies...
Larc 74in said on 16/Sep/13
Kevin Costner is still 6'1-6'1.25 and taller than this guy, 6'0.25 is closer for Cavill.

He looks like a solid 6" guy to me I can believe 6'.5". And I think he makes a great Superman I really don't think the difference between 6' even and 6'2-6'3 is big enough to make much of difference. People on here talk about a fraction of an inch in height like its a HUGE deal and 2-3 inches like its a few thousand feet, but in reality I think its hardly noticeable. I could see people not being convinced by him if he was like 5'6 or something, but for goodness sakes the man is 6 feet tall!!!! if that's not tall enough to be an effective superman I don't see an extra couple inches changing much. I guess I just don't get people like teej who think a solid 6 feet is too short but 6'2" is perfectly acceptable, It's not that big of a difference guys especially when your muscular and carry yourself well like Cavill does.

Even Hemsworth isn't tall enough to play Thor, he's 6'3, while Thor is supposed to be 6'6.

It's more like Reeve 'is' Superman. In every way imaginable, the tallest 6'4",the best looking, the most charming, the most believable. It's actually a miracle that someone could look that much like Superman and even eclipsed what you imagine from seeing a superman comic! Since the time of the Real Superman, we have gotten a chinese superboy (Dean Cain),a skinny farmboy (Welling), a super stalker(Routh), and now British Steel (Cavil). These are all very weak imposters compared to the tallest and by far the best ever to look like (hair, costume, face, and body, and Voice)..the one and only Christopher Reeve...the one God chose to be Superman. Cavil is a 6'0 British SuperChap...yawn...

Such bias crap. Cavill was great as Superman and equal to Reeves. Cavill is still big at 6ft1 and 210lbs of muscle. Look I love Reeves and the first Donner film but it was really campy and I simply enjoyed Man Of Steel more cause its fresh, modern and action packed! I also noticed MOS had influences from the comics like Birthright and Secret Origin and Cavill reminds me of Jim Lee's Superman too!
Iceman said on 28/Jul/13
Superman is not 6'3", as he's never had his height measured in the comics. It's been estimated and inferred that he might be around 6'2" or 6'3". He's taller than the average man, but what is that 5'11", 6'3". Any actor playing Superman can't be too short as there's no exact height for the Man of Steel. So a 6'0" actor playing Superman is not an issue.
ReeveisSuperman said on 28/Jul/13
Correction. In an Poll that came on TV recently, people voted Christoper Reeve almost 70% !! as their favorite Superman! The other 30% was spread between Welling, Dean Cain, Routh, and Cavil, George Reeves. Reeve looked exactly like Superman and was American (important)and the movies were great (Superman I & II). Reeve wasnt lanky, He was tall and muscular after the training and yes he stood above the rest at 6'4" because Superman should stand above the rest. Cavil is a good actor, but he is British, has no superman hair, his costume was dark (like batman) and the man of steel movie just simply was not 'Superman' and more like a dissapointing re-boot in same category as Routh's movie. As much as they try , it simply cannot equal the Greatness and Perfection that was Christopher Reeve -The one true Superman...
Rampage(-_-_-)Clover said on 28/Jul/13

Cavil has the superman body and looks the part a lot more then Reeves,Tom Welling or Brandon Routh.

Tom Welling has the perfect look for Superman; but not Hollywood acting abilities. Insulting me, and ESP shattered, is just sad, Cavill looks terrible for the role in my opinion, and I am entitled to it. And as far as what I ejaculate on to the other pages... Wow, just wow. I have never said any of those things. I say Rob's listing for
Vin Diesel is crazy, he is nearer 5'11, and I have also stated that upgrading Arnie to 187cm was unnecessary. I say 181(possibly less) for Diesel, Arnie is 185.5-186cm range. You either have a big crush on Cavill, or you simply like making stuff up in your head. 6ft3 Arnold??? LOL!!!

There's a lot of people here claiming what Superman should look like who have very little understanding of the Comics. There is no set height for Superman, but in the comics it has sometimes been referenced that he is 6'2". So in fact 6'4" Christopher Reeves would be too tall to play Superman and Henry Cavil would be closer to his actual height. A bigger issue is that Superman is always muscle bound in the comics. Henry Cavil built up that physique perfectly. None of the other Supermen: Reeves, Tom Welling, Brandon Routh looked like they were chiseled out of Steel like Cavil.
@Lorne, Arch Stanton
Your posts seem to be full of the usual dribble you ejaculate all over on the other boards. Calling Cavil "plastic", "fake". You guys should go back to making your posts about how
Vin Diesel is 6'0" and Arnold (the Terminator) is 6'3".

Tom Welling?? Are you kidding me?? Cavill's Superman is miles better. Almost as good as Reeve's, but in this new universe Reeve's simply isn't going to work. This is the perfect Superman Movie for our time. Regarding his height, I'm a little disappointed that he is not taller, and the director doesn't seem to try to hide the fact using elevators, but hey, his other properties are more than make up for it. Costner may still be the tallest of the similar height guys, in side by side, he looks a tad taller than Cavill (I think in the group shots Costner is slouching), who then looks to have a bit over Meloni, Fishburne and lastly Crowe. Most of the guys look pretty close to Rob's respective listings for them.

Henry Cavill is a legit 6ft1. Costner is shorter then Cavill! Look at the other pics posted and Costner looks 1 or even 2 inches shorter then Cavill all the time. Cavill is max 2.5 inches shorter then Michael Shannon. Lil taller then 6ft1 Chris Meloni aswell.
wingwalker said on 12/Jun/13
He looks like he's standing as tall as he possibly could (same on other pictures) while Costner has more of a loose posture, and still there looks to be about 2cm between them.
Dirty Pitts said on 11/Jun/13
Costner is at most 1 cm taller then Cavil and possibly the same height or even a bit shorter as evidenced by the pictures. Costner looks good for his age but was never at the level of Brad Pitt or Denzel. Most people would say Cavil is more attractive.

He's not muscular enough to be superman. Also, he looks shortish.
Stallone would be my 1st choice. Robert Downey could also add some dimension to the man of steel but he'd have to wear some platforms to pull it off

Should have played Jack Reacher, he's tall enough to have carried it off better than Cruise!

6'1" for sure. There's at least a clear inch between him and 6ft listed Luke Evans.
Dirty Pitts said on 23/May/13
I think this listing is bang on. The Man of Steel looks slightly over 6'0" and around a shredded looking 200 pounds. I think 5'11" to 6'1" is the best range for Superman, it's not too tall and not too short. I think 6'3" Brandon Routh and 6'4" Christopher Reeves looked kind of gangly and not muscular enough in the Superman suit because they were too tall. 6'5" Joe Manjelloeater would have been even worse. Cavil is also far more attractive as Superman should be.

As far as height is concerned being just over 6 ft you can still play superman, as we have all seen with actors, they can appaer much larger on the screen.

He looks like a guy who can put on mass really easily MD. For superman, he is probably a lil over 6' and weighed about 200-205 pounds at probably 10% body fat. I am a certified personal trainer so that is my best estimate. I also noticed that he does have shorter arms for someone of his height but a HUGE chest so he'll be a good superman
MD said on 1/Aug/12
More a question on his physique type, but does anyone know how much he weighed during the filming of 2011's Immortals? I read he dropped 25lbs, but don't know how much he weighed beforehand. I was also surprised to read that he puts on weight really easily and needs to exercizes to keep his weight down. He always struck me as someone that was probably naturally thin, but I guess that wasn't the case.

Henry Cavill seems to be playing a more 'realistic' Superman in the vein of Christian Bale's Batman. Regardless, at a little over 6 feet tall he should be very believable as Superman. While he is not the giant that Christopher Reeve was, he will make a great Superman, albeit more realistic and less cartoonish.

I don't think that I would have considered Joe Manganiello to be the perfect choice for the role either. He doesn't have blue eyes and his overall phenotype deviates so significantly from Superman's/Clark's stereotypical appearance.

At first sight(micromind) I thought Henry Cavill were short!'Cause in the movie with James Franco "Tristí£o&Isolda", who's listed as 5"11, looked just an inch taller. Being that said I agree with Rob. But now I really believe he'll
portray a real superman ( once it starts in the mind) and he has a gentleman airs. According to the height, IMO, it doesn't matter a bit since he's already got the look! So Mr. Cavill go ahead, be a true man and don't worry, Zack Snyder will plus the super to you. For fans: If you are those who's asking what's the cape for? Answer: To protect people from being hurt (fire, objects, etc.), his arms are strong but can't avoid the pressure of an explosion to do it's work.
Supermanfan380 said on 14/Dec/11
Part of the reason some people mistake Cavill for being 6'2" or 6'3" is because he has a relatively small head. This would actually help him "look" 6'4" on screen as Superman. Also with favorable camera angles etc... He should be the tallest man in any shot not including an NBA player.

Cavill does not only have the proportions, but not the looks either. If logic was reality, he would be playing Jimmy instead. But it seems that Jimmy won't be in the movie. General Zod will, though (!).
Supermanfan380 said on 21/Oct/11
I think even if he is not actually 6'3" or 6'4" they can do a good job of making him "look" 6'4" on screen in MOS. Likely will have lifts in his boots and shoes, and they can always have him 4" closer to the camera than other actors sharing scenes with him.
Everyone around here who has looked through celebrity photos to judge height knows very well how being a few inches closer to the camera can make someone look much taller than they really are.
Hollywood has used these tricks for years, and the director is Synder, who is very visual in his style, and there is no way he would let his superman look anything but tall on film.
Michael said on 17/Oct/11
Cavill is definitely a dwarf to portray Superman. Agreed Brandon Routh was the perfect cast although still falls short(the late Mr Reeves is the ultimate Superman with his build and frame). Why can't Hollywood find someone 6'3"-6'4" to play Superman. Cripes.
Henrik said on 13/Oct/11
Kyle, are you saying that 6'4" Reeve didn't dwarf 5'6" Margot Kidder? The height difference between Amy Adams (the current Lois) and Cavill seems to be about the same as the difference between Reeve and Kidder.
Anyway, it's not like it is hard to make someone appear two inches taller on camera, as has been said before. Arnold Schwarzenegger often gave the impression of being a 6'3", or even 6'4", man, while he in fact was a weak 6'2" or 6'1.5". I also read somewhere that they had a stand-in (a professional fencer) for David Prowse during the fencing scenes in The Empire Strikes Back. I doubt he was exactly the same size as Prowse, but it seemed to go unnoticed anyway.
Kyle said on 11/Oct/11
By casting Amy Adams they have a rather short Lois Lane so a too tall Superman whould dwarf her to much - especially in his role as Clark Kent, where he's supposed to be in the inferior position.
Hank said on 9/Oct/11
Henry Cavill maybe shorter than some other well known actors that have portrayed Superman such as Reeve, Routh, and Welling. However, he not 6'0.5", he is a legitimate 6'1" tall. Also if you put him in boots he is more like 6'3" which is the official height of the Man of Steel. While he maybe shorter, he is a lot more muscular than the other actors who portrayed Superman, this is kind of like what they did to James Bond, made him a shorter but a more muscle bound macho character. I think he will make a very good Superman.
Anthony Joseph said on 6/Oct/11
This height seems accurate he probably is a little over 6'1'' out of bed which is the height he claims, he is a handsome guy and should make a great superman. I always thought 6'2'' would be the ideal height but i would actually rather be 6'0.5'' with his physique than 6'2'' because when you go over 6'2'' it is very hard to fill out.

Of all superheroes, Superman more than anyone is defined by his physical presence (and perfection). I'm not saying that the perfect man is 6'3" or 6'4". I'm saying that Superman is all about being 1) big and strong, 2) a big boy scout who is on the idealistic side and 3) handsome in a classic American way. Reeve met all of those 3 criteria plus some other small ones that made him perfect. I know this will piss off some people, but Reeve was also a well schooled guy who also went to the finest acting school in the world (Julliard) so 1) he could act and 2) he naturally was graceful and polished (Superman, or Kal-El, came from a elite family on Krypton and so would exhibit the same level of sophistication and graceful manners). This is something many people don't mention but it was what made Reeve perfect for the role. You could take Matthew McConnaghey, who is tall, handsome in an American way, and he wouldn't quite carry the role with the same grace as Reeve did. But I do wonder why MC was never considered for the role when he was a bit younger. I think he would be way better than Routh or Cavill, provided he could get rid of his Southern drawl.
Henrik said on 19/Sep/11

@Fine,
As a huge Wolverine fan, the first thing I said to my friends when we saw the first X Men movie was he was too tall. I even heard other people in the crowd whisper it. Most people did not realize in the comic he was only 5'3. Also is it too much to have actors in shape enough to actually resemble the characters they are playing and not use a body suit like this movie and others have done?
Peter said on 4/Sep/11
The new Superman costume that Cavill is wearing looks absolutely aweful, he looks better in the original Superman suit that they made him wear. I am guessing this new reboot of Superman is going to tank. Anyhow he is too short to be Superman, only 6' 0.5" while Welling and Routh are 6'3" and Reeve was 6'4", the idea that they will ever make a Superman better than Reeve is just silly.
MD said on 3/Sep/11

He has the appearance however, he will totally look like Superman in the movie, but he isn't tall enough, like most of the main actors in the superhero movies. Superman is supposed to be 6'3, but let's not forget about the others:
- Batman is 6'2 and Christian Bale is barely 6'0;
- Iron Man is 6'1 (and 6'6 in armor) and Robert Downey JR is 5'8;
- Thor is 6'6 and
Chris Hemsworth is 6'3;
- Captain America is 6'2 and Chris Evans is 6'0;
The Hollywood industry doesn't seem to care much about height today, they care about appearance and look. So a 6'0.5 Superman is more than acceptable.

I really think that all of the Supermen that we have seen had something at first that you can criticize as not good for Superman , Chris Reeves was too skinny for the roll at first, but he build up for the role, Dean Cain didn’t have the blue eyes color fans will expect in Superman, Tom Welling looks good but he doesn’t feel like Superman, he doesn’t even like the suit, and Brandon Routh even with facial expressions like the ones from Reeves looks too childish(and they were not casting for Reeve, they were casting for Superman), Henry Cavill looks good for the role, I am sure he will have the muscular size, and regarding the height well… that is his downer, but with good camera angles and boots I am sure you will not notice that on the screen.
I think that for the Reeve fans it’s time to let go, we are not looking for a guy that looks like him, we are looking for a new modern version of Superman(in my opinion like the one on the DC universe online game)And for the Welling fans it’s really hard to portray him on a serious darker and hopefully more violent movie after the TV show which is a totally different way of looking at Superman.

People are so full of **** when it comes to height- particularly guys. If Cavill IS truly 6'1" or even over 6 foot at all, I'd wager he's taller than most of the clods claiming he's too short- tall enough to look over the 5'10" head of the average American man. Any time a guy tells you his height, you can sure as crap in most cases subtract an inch or so to get his real height. Almost every single guy I meet exaggerates his height. How do I know? Because I know how tall I am (and yes, I have been known to go up by half an inch and say I'm 6'2" when I'm 6'1.5"- medically measured, many times, I know for a fact exactly where I stand and self measuring is nearly impossible to get right by yourself)- every time a guy tells me he's 6'2", sure enough, the fugger is shorter than I am by at least half an inch or so. I've had guys exactly my height tell me, to my face, with a straight face, that they were 6'3". Guys who I was at least 4" taller than claim to be 6 feet tall. So yeah. Most guys are full of absolute crap. At least my license only exaggerates by a quarter of an inch or so when I really stretch lol
I actually am over 6 foot- over 6'1" (and I am the rare case that is not adding half an inch or an inch or even two- I told you I've done that, this is the honest truth)- and the average man I pass, I can see the top of his head standing on level ground with him. I need only wear my hiking boots to reach 6'3"...so if I can, Cavill, if he's 6'1", certainly can.
The REAL question is...can he act the part? Will his accent slip out? Does he have the right voice? HEIGHT is one of the most easily fakes things in hollywood. How else do you explain 5'5" Tom Cruise coming off as 5'10" in so many of his movies? The guy is tiny...he's the size of most women...his taller female co-stars would usually tower over him, yet, he somehow comes off as being close to the height of half of his 5'9"ish co-stars. Ben Stiller, too - though lately he seems to have given up on trying to look taller.
I'm more worried about his hairline, to be honest. Looks to be a bit receding.
Jim said on 5/Aug/11
Looks to be a solid 6 footer, which isn't necessarily short, but maybe a tad bit for the Superman character. Nonetheless for Hollywood, 6 ft. is plenty on camera and I'm sure they can work the angles, just like they did with Chris Evans in Capt. America to make him seem bigger - which by the way, Cavill seems to have a much more muscular frame/build than Evans, and judging by the photo released yesterday, he can definitely fit the bill.
Mesay said on 4/Aug/11

For sure, I don't see Cavill as the perfect choice, but as long as Superman isn't shorter than Batman (and Cavill isn't shorter than Bale) I think there's no problem. Plus Cavill has the right jaw for the part and if he'll properly workout he will easily be 200 pounds or more, and I don't see how anyone can call it "not big enough"...

Cavill should do fine as Superman. As long as we don't have Lex out to become ruler of Australia in some crazy land grab script. The point is it will come down to the script. I still wish they had kept Routh in that role.
As for Padalecki, I don't see him as Superman but watching him in Supernatural, I can't help but think that if I could go back in time, I would cast him as the young adult Anakin Skywalker in the Clone Wars and Revenge of the Sith. If I didn't know better, I would think the people in charge of the Clone Wars cartoon series designed Anakin similar to Padalecki.

An interesting tidbit about Cavill with regards to Superman was that he was initially pursuing the Batman role in Batman Begins, but director Chris Nolan thought he was too young at the time, only 21 years of age. Thinking about it he is more Batman like than Superman. He comes across as very metrosexual, something Superman is not, this fits Batman/Bruce Wayne more. Looking at him he would be an excellent James Bond.
I also agree with Frankie that Cavizel would be the best Superman out there. However since he portrayed Jesus, it would make the religious undertones of Superman too obvious.
Frankie said on 20/May/11
Cavill is a bit on the short and small build size to be Superman. Honestly Jim Cavizel is the best man out there to be Superman. I thought Routh was the best imitation of Reeve. Why they fired him is beyond me. I doubt this reboot will be very good, even with Nolan producing it.

i think his voice isnt really on tone as superman and i do think the short height is a disadvantage, thats why i hoped they pick joe manganiello because Christopher reeve was 6'4 while manganiello was 6'5 and is on his prime BUILD. they could've just used graphics for supermans blue eyes just like what they did i passion of the christ to change the iris colors. if anything i hope they choose manganiello for superman if they make a justice league movie :)

George is right.
He is almost 6-1 that enough to PLAY Superman. Some of you are acting like is is becoming one for real. 6-1 looks tall on camera and there is easy to look 2 inches taller on camera.
TheVerve180 said on 11/May/11
wtf 6ft is plenty tall...some of you claiming 6ft guy might be only 5ft10 max.
Simon Templar said on 29/Apr/11
Kraven: with all respect, I don´t quite agree with you saying "..he does´t have the correct height..". Let´s remember Henry´s 6´0.5"; I mean he´s not 5´9" tall.
Let´s state he´s already a tall human being, so it´s just a matter of 1.5 or 2 inches, and he could even balance it with very short lifts. What´s more, whithout lifts, wearing the usual Supermans´s boots (perhaps 1.5"), maybe whith 1 additional half an inch, he´d be O.K.. I do not think height is really a problem here: if so, what would be the height difference between Michael Keaton and the cartoon character that he interpreted 20 years ago, ie Batman (not less than 4 / 5 inches difference,....not even using stilts ..¡¡!!). What would then be the difference between the stature of Daniel Craig with the idea of the character, as Ian Fleming's James Bond? (3 inches or so apart, and not in favor of Craig !!!)
George said on 22/Apr/11
None of you have a clue!!!
First of he is going to have a slight lift in the shoe making him 186 and 188 in shoes. Secondly....christian bale is 6ft batman is 6ft2 chris evans is 6ft captain america is 6ft2 chris hemsworth is 6ft3 thor is 6ft6 robert downey jnr is 5ft8 tony stark is 6ft1 toby maguire is 5ft7 3/4 spiderman is 5ft10. Are you starting to see a pattern here
trolls? The thing is....most of the posters here are probably nerds that havnt lifted a single weight in their life and dont have a clue how superman is supposed to look in real life...first of its a comic!! they dont look like that in real life proportions! secondly Henry cavill is more than big enough to fill the shoes of superman he has a big build most likely bigger than all of geeky
trolls posting on this page secondly he is going to get much bigger for the role. Christian Bale went from the machinist to batman begins in a year....did any of you geeks see batman begins? he was huge! and henry cavill is bigger in his state now and has the same amount of time as bale to bulk up so he will easily look ''big enough''. The thing is on screen he will look large and imposing with lifts camera angles etc....its never been a problem for other actors Val Kilmer is 6ft and batman is 6ft2 yet he pulled of looking tall in Batman Forever and Henry Cavill is at least the same height but he is going to be quite a bit bigger in the muscle department. I hope you all find a girlfriend and live happy normal lives....i honestly do....

Agree that Padalecki is a poor choice for Supes, he just doesn't look like him. I do think Padalecki would make a good Marvel Thor though, as facially he looks a lot like George Perez's Thor. Just another 20 lbs of muscle, a wig and some contacts and I think he'd make a better Thor than Hemsworth.
I'm not convinced Cavill is a good Supes, even though he does look very "Superman-ish" facially. He is several inches on the short side, his build is a bit on the small side, and I've seen nothing to suggest he can pull off a mid-western American. Maybe he can, but I have little hope for a Zack Snyder-directed Superman-film. Everything I've seen from him just seems all wrong for a Supes movie. Hopefully I'll be forced to eat my words, but only time will tell.
As for Cavill, he looks roughly 6'0", I do think 184 cm is generous. He only looks tall on the Tudors next to Rhys-Meyers. He never looked tall next to Callum Blue who himself looked fairly small on-screen in Smallville.

I love how so many people talk about superman's build. He's supposed to be a big guy, but in the comics he's drawn far larger than he realistically would be at that height and weight - not to mention the real superman's proportions are even worse than barbies.
Kraven said on 16/Apr/11
Henry Cavill is just to short and skinny to play Superman, and Jared Padalecki is just as horrible casting suggestion for Superman as Cavill is, since Jared Padalecki doesn't even resemble Superman in the slightest, and he also isn't muscular or wide enough to play Superman, he is only tall enough.
Kraven said on 16/Apr/11
Henry Cavill is way to short to play Superman, even Brandon Routh was on the short side for playing superman at 189 cm tall. Superman is 191 cm tall, therefore the actor that portrays him should at least be 191 cm tall, and have a muscular wide build. Henry Cavill just doesn't have the correct height or muscular physique to fill the part of Superman. His face does somewhat resemble Superman's, but not much.
MsKitty said on 12/Apr/11
@Michael, I am far from a "die-hard" fan of Henry Cavill, only having seen him in a couple of projects. I am, however a "die-hard" fan of Superman, mostly based in comics. Therefore, I look at Cavill and am not disappointed...it is absolutely not some sort of sacreligious statement to say that perhaps he will dethrone Chris Reeve as "perfect Superman". How can we say it's impossible? It is entirely possible. It's the die-hard Reeve and Smallville fans who are up in arms about this whole thing. I am giving the actor, director, and the entire project the benefit of the doubt. I think it has great potential. What everyone's big problem is with Henry Cavill is beyond me. Get over it, I say.
And Jared Paledecki?? Seriously?? That's maybe one of the worst suggestions I have heard thus far...As for Cavill being labeled a "small guy" and "diminuitive"...do i sense a case of little man syndrome?? Get a life!
Candyman said on 10/Apr/11
Padalecki, while much taller than Cavill, imho is too boyish in his facial features and doesnt quite project the poise to pull off superman as well as I believe Cavill can. But that's just me. Above 6 feet is tall enough to be Superman.
Joe said on 6/Apr/11
Cavill is probably a 6 footer, I think he is too London pretty boy to portray a clean cut Midwestern guy which is Superman. This will not come out right. The only actor who did Superman right was Christopher Reeve. I remember when they wanted to recast Superman I knew it would never work. Reeve IS Superman, always has and always will. Even in SR, they paid homage to Reeve.
MD said on 29/Mar/11
I don't get this "too short" BS for most superheroes. So long as you're six feet or more, you can work with that on camera. To me, more than height, weight and build can be a major issue with casting. It's pretty easy to manipulate height on-screen; it's much more difficult to manipulate weight and build.
supes78 said on 28/Mar/11
George Reeves was fine for 50 years ago. Times have changed and the ideal Superman candidate should reflect the physical attributes that we expect from heroes of today. Although I'm sure Cavill is a great actor, he's way too short for Superman. But then again, I think the days of casting the "perfect" Superman might have ended with Chris Reeve.
Alka Seltzer said on 27/Mar/11
George Reeves is around the same height. I don't see anyone saying he was a horrible Superman.
Lyla said on 25/Mar/11
He's totally amazing :)
The new Superman, I think that it's a good choice btw
Michael said on 20/Mar/11
Yep, Jared Padelecki would be a solid choice, much better than the diminutive Cavill. MsKitty is certainly a die-hard fan of Henry Cavill despite the lack of stature to portray Superman. Well, everyone is entitled to his/her opinion. It's just sad to see a small guy like Cavill donning the costume.
Quote from Mskitty :-
"He will definitely be better than Dean Cain and Brandon Routh. He may well give Christopher Reeve a run for the title of "Perfect Superman"..."
I don't know how you came up with that supposition but the way you stated it seems to suggest that as a fact. Amen..
MsKitty said on 17/Mar/11
In my opinion, Christopher Reeve was good for the role in the first two movies because of the writing and directing. It was not due to his acting skill or because of his height and build. Let us not forget that Superman 3 and 4 failed miserably even with Reeve aka "the PERFECT Superman"! Because of the crew helming this next reboot, Cavill has a good chance of being the best Superman to date. However, die-hard fans of the Reeve Supes, Tom Welling's Superman based character, and/or Brandon Routh's Superman will never be satisfied with this choice. As far as comic book fans are concerned, I feel the naysayers in this group are among those who at first completely dismissed Heath Ledger playing Joker in The Dark Knight, ignoring the fact that he had already proven to be a great actor prior to his being cast and that he used The Killing Joke as a basis for his portrayal. For the most part, those comic book fanboys were proven wrong and came to accept the Heath Ledger incarnation of the Clown Prince of Crime with open arms, as I feel they will once Cavill flies onto the screen.
He will definitely be better than Dean Cain and Brandon Routh. He may well give Christopher Reeve a run for the title of "Perfect Superman"...
I have to say that if 6ft 0.5in is his barefoot height, then it's safe to say that his height in most regular shoes is close to 6'2" and therefore, making him appear an inch taller than that will not be much of a problem. As I said before, he can bulk up enough to look large and imposing, so I am not the least bit worried.
As for Mr. Rob's comment on Taylor Lautner one day becoming Superman...let's hope we never have to live through that one! D: lol
The real concern we should all have, as was stated before, without a doubt, is who will they get to play our beloved Lois Lane?! Hopefully, it's better than Nolan's choice to play Catwoman, although as a fangirl of Selina Kyle, I'm warming to that idea....
Whit said on 17/Mar/11
@Rob - Sort of funny that each new Superman is shorter than the last when each new generation is getting taller. I vote they cast Jared Padalecki, dye his hair darker, and maybe give him blue contacts. Or, heck, they could just stick with Tom Welling and upgrade him to the big screen.
orangy said on 16/Mar/11
We'll have to agree to disagree. With some decent lifts I think he'll look imposing enough. Let's not write him off until we see a trailer at least.
Editor Rob
instead of Superman getting taller, you have Welling/Routh shorter than Reeve and now Henry a couple of inches shorter than those 2.
By 2020 they'll probably be casting Taylor Lautner as the man of steel.
orangy said on 14/Mar/11
Are you stuttering Michael, or do you really hope repetition will give your whining credibility. Admit it, you're actually Brandon Routh aren't you? Cavill's clearly a tall guy. Just watch the Tudors, he's consistently one of the tallest in any given scene. At least 6 feet if not quite 6'1
Michael said on 13/Mar/11
Henry Cavill doesn't have the looks and the height to portray Superman well enough. I sense a disaster coming.
MsKitty said on 11/Mar/11
I couldn't agree with you more, Launchdoctor! It isn't that I think Henry Cavill is the best choice or the perfect Superman, but I think he is a good choice, and though he obviously is lacking height, I think he looks the part...he doesn't look like Christopher Reeve, he looks like Supes. So I am remaining optimistic and taking the wait-and-see stance on this one. As for Lois Lane, let's hope they learned from the last horrible casting choice. Who do you think would be a good pick? Funny how this thread turned into a Superman forum...lol
Launchdoctor said on 10/Mar/11
To respect the true legacy, you must return at least in part, to the original comic books before any movie. Kryptonian males were all intelligent, tall and physically fit. Brandon Roth was a great Christopher Reeve, not really a great Superman. Good but not great. At one point in 2010 the rumors were Jon Hamm for the part. I thought that choice the best so far. Why? Jon looks most like the original comic book character and he doesn't have boyish looks. But the part has been cast and the contracts signed. Henry Cavill is an actor and he may end up doing a fine job, we'll just have to wait and see. The real casting story though will always be... Who plays Lois Lane?

Here's another charity group saying this guy is over 6'0. He's closer to 5'10 in reality.
Michael said on 6/Mar/11
Mskitty and SolidSnake,
Both of your points are well taken, especially Mskitty's. Yes, the storyline plays a huge part in getting the movie back on track, and for this the director's contribution is extremely vital. Superman I and II by the late Christopher Reeve is the best of the best in Superman's history, and although II and III are dismal *in relative* to the earlier works, they are still considered as part of the Superman's saga due to Reeve's participation.
Now, height and looks are a different matter altogether. Although the director is one of the vital part to the equation, the actor needs to act(and look) the part as well. I don't what other think and this is my opinion. Tom Welling can't really act and his performance are pretty wooden although he looked tall and strong. Brandon Routh scores better in both looks and performance but the director screwed up in Superman Returns with a mediocre to below average storyline. Christopher Reeve is the ideal Superman and the tallest one out of the pack standing at 6'4" barefoot. With boots he probably stands at 6'6" or more. Cavill will probably be around 6'4" with lifters but his frame is small compared to the bigger guys. The superhero needs to have a big presence with a towering figure in order to portray Superman to a tee.
I am still waiting for a good director to bring back the Superman legacy to life. In my mind the Superman saga ended with Christopher Reeve's resignation from the franchise. Brandon Routh is the best candidate to fill in the shoes(very similar resemblance to Chris' features although an inch or two shorter) but unfortunately there isn't any good directors to make that happen, just yet.

I couldn't agree with you more, Jed! You seem like an individual who knows what he's on about! :D
jed said on 3/Mar/11
JonasBlane Routh is 6'2.5 if that. Lifts/Camera angles will be used to make Cavill look taller (if they even have to be used)
jed said on 3/Mar/11
He's 5cm shorter than Routh. If that. Come on. Nobody complains that Bale is 2 inches too short for Batman. Plus the way superman is drawn in the comics makes him look far bigger than 225lbs yet nobody points that out as a problem.
JonasBlane said on 1/Mar/11
Superman should be 6'3 - 6'4, Reeves was 6'4, Routh was 6'4, Welling is 6'3. He's not an average man, but a superhero, he's supposed to tower over people. And quite frankly 6ft0.5 just doesn't cut it regardless of what these people on his dick say.
MsKitty said on 27/Feb/11
@Michael "With Cavill on board the Superman franchise is going down the drain"
I'd say Superman IV the Quest for Peace with Christopher Reeve and Superman Returns with Brandon Routh already got a good head start on that one. And don't get me going on that whole Smallville thing! If anything, Cavill can in no way make it any worse, especially with Chris Nolan and Zack Snyder helming the project. And if it does tank, I'd be extremely surprised and even astonished if the reason is Cavill's lack of a couple inches. To me, that's a moot argument and a fanboys lament if I've ever heard one.
In my opinion, they can easily add inches to his height with lifts and camera angles and that'd be just fine with me. The real important thing is that the story is good as well as the acting, which I have to believe will be all that and more. This is exactly what is needed to breathe life back into this franchise. I for one am extremely excited and have no doubts that it will be great. Can't wait to see my superhero Crush back on the big screen again!

Yes but this is Superman, he shouldn't look short next to other cast members and they already cast 6'1" Kevin Costner as his father

@ michael give the guy a chance. Do you know how much hate there was for Daniel Craig being picked for Bond? He was blonde and the shortest actor to take the role yet Casino Royale was praised as being one of the best in the bond saga

For all those who believe that 6´1" is short for Superman, my answer is the following: "what´s really short is your minds, my dear Sirs". Superman is a very strong man, and tall also, but he´s not suposed to be a basketball player.
6´1" is a more than respectable tall height, which will have the addition of the boots (6´1" + boots: 6´2,5" aprox). Great height for this superhero. Taller than most men all around the world (he´s not suposed to be a Giant, Hulk or King Kong).
Sam said on 22/Feb/11
The recent article in Entertainment Weekly about the casting of Superman refers to Cavill as 6'1"
Kyle said on 21/Feb/11
I think his height is about right in terms of the upcoming comic movies really. Thor should be the tallest, which Hemsworth is. Captain America and Batman are around the same size, but a little shorter than Superman, which Bale and Evans are compared to Cavill.

superman's supposed to be 6'3, I wouldn't say 5/6 cm is 'too short' for a film. I mean Brandon Routh is 6'2ish and looked fine.
