She said in 2015 "I’m five foot three, I’m not a model, and I never wanted to be one.", although in one of her books, she mentioned how Margaret Gorman was 5ft 1 and that "I had two and a half inches on her!"

I wasn't the only person hesitant about picturing a petite woman being Miss America winner. I thought for a long time "There will be only two ways you'll see petite Miss America winners. One would be if a petite woman was declared Miss America on a foul" (we saw that with 5'3" Suzette Charles after 5'9" Vannessa Williams was caught posing nude in Penthouse magazine) or "when Vanderbilt University wins an outright SEC football title." While Vanderbilt's football team hasn't yet won their outright SEC title (but in 1974 they and Alabama shared the title when Mississippi State used two ineligible players) Thanks to Gretchen there have been more petite Miss America winners (including a 5'3" Miss America who's deaf!) and she's pretty too! Whether Gretchen wears gowns or jeans she won OUTRIGHT her Miss America title! Love you!

I was skeptic trying to picture a petite Miss America,but when 5'3" Gretchen Carlson won the Miss America title in 1989,I wondered,"How many other petite Miss Americas have there been?" I found only two other petite Miss Americas,the one Gretchen mentioned and Suzette Charles,but she will be stigmatized as being declared Miss America in 1984 after Vannessa Williams was stripped of her title because of her nude poses in Penthouse magazine. Still lukewarm about picturing ANY petite Miss Americas,but once Gretchen won her Miss America title outright in 1989,I needed help picturing a petite Miss America. Luckily,6 time PBA champion Ron Palombi convinced me Gretchen was Miss America! It's still never going to be easy to see petite beauty contest winners,but Gretchen proved even petite women CAN be Miss America!
