American actor, best remembered for films such as House of Frankenstein, House of Dracula, The Black Raven and Abbot and Costello meet Frankenstein. He once mentioned, in reference to playing Frankenstein's Monster "I'm 6-foot-4 to start with, and with the makeup and padding, I'd wear a size 70 coat, the boots had six-inch soles, and by the time I was ready to film, I was just about seven feet tall."

Most sites quote him as being 6'5, and a few 6'6. He died in 1973, but it looks like a lot of people want to cut my great uncle down to their size, Even though they never met him, and many were born after his death. I was only four when he died, so he looked very tall to me!

Strange's main contribution to the movie Frankensteins was to demonstrate just how good Boris Karloff was as the monster. Karloff wasn't even six feet tall. His monster was menacing because of Karloff's extraordinary (and in fact rather beautiful) face, and his capacity to project brutish depravity. If all you had to be to be a convincing Frankenstein monster is tall and ugly, I could have played Frankenstein. This would have been a little like Woody Allen subbing for Alan Ladd in Shane. You have to have a certain quality of personality to fit a character, and just being physically appropriate doesn't cut it.

Glenn was closer to 6'4.6 to 6.5" in his prime, speaking with people who knew him. He didn't play the Frankenstein Monster until mid-life, rode horses and probably took some falls playing a lot of baddies.

There's a good chance he was an honest 6'4" but probably not over it. He probably had a bit of height loss by the time of Gunsmoke. BTW, without the Frankenstein makeup he could look like a missing link in the Chaney family, he facially resembles Lon Sr. a bit but his size was more like Lon Jr.

Glenn mentioned he was 6'4" in an interview when he was much older. He was probably taller when he was playing the monster, maybe by an inch. Bob Burns mentioned Glenn was about 6'6" tall. When Mr. Strange was playing Sam the Bartender he was older and Arness was younger, probably sporting cowboy boots to accentuate the Lawman's height. I don't remember seeing Glenn wearing cowboy boots on Gunsmoke. I'd guess Glenn was 6'5" in his prime.

A weak 6'4".

I thought at times he could look at least a strong 6'4" but James Arness I think could seem right around 3 inches taller. Don't really remember how he compared to John Wayne in Red River and he co-starred with Sterling Hayden in a film I've never seen, so it would interesting to see how he compares to those guys.

Looked it, requested him a while back I think. Don't keep forgetting classic Hollywood actors categories though!
