British Actor, best remembered for TV series 'As Time Goes By' and films like Mrs Brown, Tomorrow Never Dies. Listed 178cm by agency. I think he did look that height in the 1990's, but early career possibly more.

Rob, could Palmer please join the Bond Actors tag as Admiral Roebuck?
Sinclair said on 17/May/22
Rob, maybe 5β11β peak?
Editor Rob
Yeah I did mention he could look taller. I don't think 179 is unfair for Geoffrey.
Leif said on 20/Dec/20
@Arch I saw a scene with him and he looked almost as tall as Cleese..maybe 6'2"?
Miss Sandy Cowell said on 7/Nov/20
There should be a special tribute programme made to celebrate his life and long career.
Arch Stanton said on 7/Nov/20
RIP, another great lost. Cleese absolutely towered him in Fawlty, 5'10 seens more likely than 5'11,
Miss Sandy Cowell said on 7/Nov/20
@ Rob - He most certainly was. He did comedy and serious equally well. His 'Inspector Morse' episode was on last night - what a coincidence.
He even appeared in the final 'Blackadder Goes Forth' episode - that terribly upsetting one.
Geoffrey will be sadly missed. With heartfelt sympathy and prayers to his wife and children and all other family members, not forgetting all his friends.

π’ So sad to hear that Geoffrey Palmer has passed on. He went to sleep peacefully at his home and leaves behind his wife, Sally, and children Charles and Harriet Palmer. Sally and Geoffrey married in 1963 and stayed together for all that time through thick and thin - how admirable. ππ
Geoffrey was 93.

Was always a good actor in anything he appeared in and lived a long life.

Rob, is the 178cm agency listing for Palmer recent or from Palmerβs younger days?
I would give Palmer a flat 5β11β for his peak. In an episode of The Saint, I thought Palmer did look more 5β10β than 5β11β but that may have been because of uneven ground, Palmerβs relatively relaxed posture at the time and camera angles. In an episode of Fawlty Towers, Tomorrow Never Dies and As Time Goes By, Palmer does generally pass for 5β11β.
Editor Rob
from when he was added, but in 80's he could have been listed 5ft 11.

My word! Even Geoffrey Palmer is in this 'Poirot' episode, 'The Clocks'. He's sitting at his desk, just as he did in 'Blackadder Goes Forth', so I'm going to have to rely on my vast experience of watching him in comedies and 'Inspector Morse' (The Infernal Serpent), and go with five foot ten!

@ Arch Stanton, re: 23rd Feb.
He strikes me as more of a Boneo man, personally!
Sandy Cowell said on 2/Jan/17
I would have definitely given him 5ft11 for his earlier career.
He stuck mainly to situation comedies, which he was good at! He even appeared in the last, and upsetting, 'Blackadder Goes Forth' episode as 'Field Marshall Haig'.
But when Geoffrey Palmer starred in an 'Inspector Morse' episode, he was as chilling as it's possible to get!
I haven't seen the 'Bond' movie with him in or the film 'Mrs Brown'. If his performance in 'Inspector Morse' was anything to go by, he would have made a cracking 'Bond villian'!
I wonder what he's up to now?

My favourite "grumpy" old man! I could've believed he was 6 feet, and he seems to have broad enough shoulders and good posture.
I feel he's an under-recognized, and maybe even under-appreciated actor, often one of those supporting stars who make the main stars look good.
One of my favourite scenes with him was from "Butterflies" when his 2 sons (1 of whom was Nicholas Lyndhurst) said something like "You're a good guy and you're really fun - even though your face doesn't always join in!"
But my favourite of his roles was a Lionel Hardcastle in "As Time Goes By".

Rob, do you think in his peak he was 5'11" maybe 6'0" ?
Editor Rob
not looked at anything from 70's he was in for a long time, but he was down 5ft 10 on his agency so I've went with that...
Shaun said on 1/Aug/12
Yeah I know what you mean Andy I can recall some films where he looked 5'11-'6 range. 5'11" is possible in his prime but if he was listed as 178cm I'd say that's likely legit. They're unlikely to downgrade him.
Shaun said on 1/Aug/12
Spot on I'd say, he was roughly the same height accounting for footwear as that 5'10 actress who played the elderly woman with hearing problems in Fawlty Towers, He looked quite short next to John Cleese, but so would most people..
the nagster said on 20/Dec/11
he has lost a lot of inches, only just taller than 5 foot 5 Tom Hollander in Vic
Andy M said on 16/Aug/11
5'10" is definitely wrong. In Reginald Perrin in the 1970's he looked about 3 inches taller than Leonard Rossiter who I'd put at 5'9.5". I think an even 6'0 would be right
Shaun said on 6/Jun/11
Looked 5'11" in Tomorrow Never Dies
Daii said on 24/Jan/09
He looks 5'11 to me in stuff he's been in, such as Fawlty Towers where he played the doctor who checks out the dead guy in 'the kipper and the corpse' xD he looked about 5'11 - 6'0 during the 70s (when this was made)
Mikex said on 30/Dec/05
He looks taller than 5'10'', at least 6ft. Maybe he's one of these guys appears taller than they are.
