American swimmer and actress. She commented once in terms of acting career - "For one thing, they would have thought I was too tall, because l was five feet eight and a half". I haven't seen any film for so long, so ain't sure. In her latter days looks 5ft 5ish.

She was at least 5'-8". Always looked very tall, even next to tall leading men like Van Johnson. A little taller than 5'-7"+ Lucille Ball in Easy to Wed, but not by more than an inch.

Esther Williams in her prime was a full 5'-8 1/2", as she stated. She was one of the few leading ladies who was actually taller than 5'-7 1/2" Lucille Ball. She stood about 1" taller than Lucille Ball in their scene together in Easy to Wed, 1946.

It's sad hearing 5'8" (in her movie career) Esther make assertions of being 5'10". Similar to her comments about former boyfriend Jeff Chandler wearing dresses, which she later explained she "made up" just to get publicity for her book. It's a pity Esther couldn't follow the absolute "class" of her MGM contemporary, the wonderful Cyd Charisse.

I just watched the dvd of Take Me Out To The Ball Game this morning....in the extras, they show a clip of a song and dance Kelly (who also wrote the screenplay and did all the choreography) cut, because he felt Williams was too tall, and that it made the routine look clunky. If you get to see this, watch for whenever William's long skirt pops up a bit...you can see that she is clearly wearing ballerina type slippers. Absolutely flat, and in the routine, she stoops...a lot. Kelly's shoes give him away: high instep suggest lifts. I'd hazard that he a bit shorter than the 5' 7" usually attributed to him.

Adam, you should read Esther's autobiography of a few years back. She had problems with Gene Kelly because he disliked the fact that she was taller than him, even when they were sitting. She told him to sit up staight and try sitting on his foot in close-ups.

I would believe this. In Easy to Wed, she stood about 1" taller than 5'-7 1/2" Lucille Ball, and in very high heals, stood about an inch shorter than 5'-11 1/2" Keenan Wynn.
