UK Comedic Actor from the Morecambe and Wise shows. Ernie Wise made him probably seem taller than he was.

A just watched there xmas 1973 show and now that i am older i would put eric at 5'8" he was about 3 inches at most taller than ernie. When i was a kid but i thought eric was at least 5'10" becouse i thought ernie was at least 5'7" and me at age 8 was about 4'10" lol so eric looked near to 6ft. But they were brilliantly funny to watch. When comedy was at its best by miles, now its as funny as toothache.

5ft-8-and-a-half. He was no taller than Glenda Jackson when she was in heels and noticeably shorter than Penelope Keith (5ft 10).
That matches the observations of people who worked with Eric on stage.
He looked taller next to Ernie - and Eric was blessed with a well-proportioned physique.
I still miss him and Ernie!

He was also very close to Michael Aspel (who claimed 5ft 9)

@richie but Paul and John where 5ft 10 so eric can't be over 5ft 9 going by your logic

I would say Eric was 5'10", he was a touch shorter than Lennon and McCartney who were billed at 5'11".

My mother was photographed with him at a motor company promotional event in the late 1970s, I'd say 5'8" to 5'9".

Morecame and Wise looked shorter than Elton John.

I remember reading years ago that he was 5'10.5", that seems more likely considering the difference between him and Ernie Wise.

Ernie Wise is generally listed as 5'5 and Eric looked at least five inches taller. I'd say nearer to 5'10.

In the 1976 Morcambe and Wise Christmas Special you're on about, Elton John had massive platforms boots on! You can see them when he's sitting at the piano, and then again, when he sidles off the stage! Eric looked like he had normal shoes on. I'm watching it right now on BBC iplayer! :o)

Are you sure it is 2 inches Rob?
Editor Rob
he can look 1.5 inches smaller in that clip.

Rob see the 1963 edition of Morecambe and Wise with the Beatles. A young Eric is the same size as John Lennon.
Editor Rob
he looked shorter than paul/john and george I think

He lost a lot of height after his heart op. In early movies he was 5 to 6 inches taller than wise. Towards the end it was about 2 to 3 inches over wise.

Five inches at least on Wise before his heart attack

this is mental - I can't quite believe that there are other people out there who also noted the Elton/Eric annomaly. I thought Elton was a shorter guy and assumed Eric was a lot taller. Unless Elton wore secret platforms.
Editor Rob
maybe elton had his platform shoes on.
there was a joke in one of their books where Ernie asked how long Eric was in the hospital...and Ernie replied 'About 5ft 10...two weeks actually' or something along those lines.
Angela Rippon in basic heels was pretty near his height, Angela herself claimed 5ft 6

fricanman - I saw that as well, Elton John had at least 2 inches on Eric so I think he must have been smaller than this, possibly even 5'6.

Just watched an old Xmas special with them and Elton John. Elton towered over Ernie and was almost the same height as Eric. I always thought Elton was very small but he is listed as 5'7" - he wasn't wearing platforms either! No way Eric could be much more than 5'8" from that comparison, but a genius at any height!
Chris said on 13/Jan/09
My mother met him in the 1970s and she thinks about 5'8" is accurate.
Paul said on 31/Jan/08
He was the same height as me when I played keyboards for two of them back in the sixties in Blackpool Ernie was 5'5" and Eric 5' 8"

Tom Jones wore shoes with big heels and still does. I reckon Tom is lucky if he makes 5'10''. He's got the build of a 5'8'' guy. I think Eric was around 5'10''. He was certainly more than 5'8''.

Personally I remember seeing footage of a 5'10" + platform shoes Tom Jones on their show and being quite a bit taller than Morecambe.
I think 5'8.5" is still too low though. He seemed at least 4 inches taller than Wise who I think was no less than 5'5".

I think he a bit more than this, 5'10'' to 5'11''. He was often thought of as the tall one which was probably because he worked with Ernie who was about 5'6'' I think. I seem to remember Ernie talking in a documentary and saying he wasn't that short, growing up at a time when average male height was only 5'8'' and that Eric wasn't that tall. I think you can safely add a couple of inches to your estimate though.
