How tall was Douglas Adams

Douglas Adams Height

6ft 5 (195.6 cm)

English Writer, best remembered for the Hitchiker's Guide novels. In 2001 after his death, the Guardian had an article, with a friend commenting: "A giant of a man, surely nearer seven foot than six, broad-shouldered, and he did not stoop like some very tall men who feel uncomfortable with their height. But nor did he swagger with the macho assertiveness that can be intimidating in a big man. He neither apologised for his height, nor flaunted it. It was part of the joke against himself".
Douglas himself once said "Being six foot five means I sometimes get giddy just standing up.".

Be interesting to see Cleese and Adams stand together. Both were solid 6ft5 range, IMO

Hard to understand why 6ft5 Adams was interested in wearing heels.

Also quite surprising that the average vote has Adams as at least half an inch taller than his listing.

@movieguy12

John Cleese (who could be a little over 6’5”) said that Douglas Adams (in heels) was towering him (Cleese), too.

From what John Cleese and Stephen Fry said of Douglas Adams, he (Douglas) sounds too tall to be only 6’5”.

He must’ve been at least 6’5.5”. If Stephen Fry (who is an easy 6’4.5”) really did say Douglas Adams was 3 inches taller, Douglas Adams must’ve been too big to be just 6’5” flat.

I'd say at least 6'5''. He looks genuinely tall in that Letterman clip. Even sitting down you can see how tall he is by his long legs and large frame. If Stephen Fry thought he was 3 inches taller than himself as a poster quotes below he must have been very big.

I agree! It's not really the best to judge height because, Douglas Adams was walking and David was standing.

Douglas is a mystery man, but I think he could've been over 6'5". However, evidence needs to be shown. John Cleese and Stephen Fry admitted this guy was a giant (to be fair, Cleese did say that Douglas was wearing some funky high heels. I'm not sure if Stephen Fry was noticing the footwear Douglas Adams had).

I'll try to find some more evidence!

Rob, here is Douglas Adams with David Letterman. 0:34 seconds in the video.

All I can say is, Douglas Adams looks bloody huge despite the camera disadvantage and posture disadvantage along with flat footwear.

It's a shame they never posed properly.

Could be a 6’5.25” guy, based on what John Cleese and Stephen Fry have said about him.

Yes a stone is 14 pounds. It makes sense, (even more so these days of ever increasing poundage) to break the weight down to less units, rather than pounds. So 140 pounds is ten stone. Much like the reason why we dont measure height in millimetres.

Rob, who would you give the edge to, Metta World Peace or Douglas Adams?
Editor Rob
I've seen more footage/pics of World Peace than Adams, so it's hard to say
Dream(5'9.5 said on 20/Jul/18
Rob, based on the reports of this guy, would you think there's a stronger possibility of a strong 6'5" than a weak 6'5"?
Editor Rob
I'm not that sure on him.
Dream(5'9.5") said on 11/Jul/18
Maybe 6'5.25"?

Stephen Fry states in his autobiography that Adams was “a gigantic man, at least three inches taller than [Fry]”

Hi Rob. If a persons head just clears a 6ft 5 person's shoulders, what range would you guess them as being, and what is the typical distance from the shoulders to the top of the head?
Editor Rob
there could be near 2 inches, more if the person has a longer than average neck or less if a shorter neck.

he was really good friends with Stephen Fry, I wonder if there are any photos of them together for comparison

Am I the only person to have commented on this celebrity? I can't see any comments by other people!

I went to Cambridge University with him and he always hung around with his mates outside my college and they were all very tall; yet not intimidating! I've got a photograph with him somewhere, I should dig it out and donate it to this website.

Yes, as I recall he weighed around 225lbs after excersing...

What is a stone? 14 pounds?
Mr Mayfair said on 1/Apr/07
Douglas was spot on 6.5 but never less than 16 stone! Often much heavier, his weight was more of an issue to him than height (we used to go the same gym here in UK for a time) and that was what contributed to his early death when he lived in US - over excersing especially on the bike.

There's a quote in biography:
"A body like this - six foot five inches and seventeen stone - is a huge thing"

I wonder if his large frame (e.g height) contributed to his early death?
Mikex said on 27/Dec/05
He always looked massive when on tv. No doubt about his height.
