He's from my town Natick, Massachusetts. He was the assistant coach of my soccer team in first grade. People treat him like a god here lol

He's well proportioned for a 5'9 guy. He can seem a strong 5'9 there.
Nik said on 1/Jan/19
He is noted for being one of the shortest Quarterbacks in the modern game!

@Greg99
He would've had a harder time playing nowadays, since NFL linemen are getting taller and bigger.

Doug is much revered here in San Diego because of his time with the Chargers. Stand up guy all round. 5'9" looks a good call. Robert Conrad mentioned his successful time playing football, so it all depends on the talent and position - apart from the issue of being able to see over the linemen, he was a great quarterback.
Nik said on 21/Dec/18
On a lot of sites he is down as being 5'10"!

@Christian: Very true. I bet anyone who saw him in street clothes and didn't recognize him never would have guessed he was a pro, much less QB. As you mentioned, a RB can be his height, but will be considerably heavier. You could get by being a bit lighter at corner, but many of them are taller. Between his height, build and weight, he'd be undersized just about anywhere. I'd be interested to see Doug and Emmitt Smith side by side to see how solid of a 5'9" Emmitt is. He also got both 5'9" and 5'10" listings as you may remember, but was just being called 5'9" when drafted. Btw, it's funny that Aaron Rodgers seems much more sensitive about his height than Doug despite being much taller.

@Rising
Even most high school QB's are taller and heavier than Doug.

I like his name! It is great that he is so honest!

@Bart:that lines up especially if he hadn’t come down to a low. He could’ve been measured early morning 5’9” and be weak 5’9 really or even later in the AM at 5’9 and be just within 1/4” of it. At 5’8.75-5’9, you may not notice a difference if you’re 1/4” or less shorter. But under 5’9” does line up like you said

@Robby Harris: Yeah, it doesn't really look 3" to me with Reagan, but the best I can figure is Reagan had a case of old man posture by then or I can't quite make out what kind of shoes Flutie was wearing so maybe he had bigger heels. It at least looks like a 4" difference with Trump in that black and white photo and aside from Trump's back, I can see him maybe dropping some height with his stance. His instinct was probably to drop some height rather than tower over his star quarterback. Hopefully the full episode on The Tonight Show with Leno will be posted including the greeting.
@Christian: Very small for a QB, just look at him with Drew Brees and remember that Brees himself is considered a small QB.
@Rob: He does look like he could be 5'8.75" with Brees, but he sometimes looks above 5'9" as well so I think this is perfect. I agree he wouldn't measure close to 5'10" in the afternoon
RP: A 1 inch inflation isn't that uncommon in sports. Even a guy like Carl Weathers was always about 6'1", but listed 6'2" by the Oakland Raiders. The article I posted said the Bills introduced him at 5'9", though I also remember him being listed 5'10" when he played, though it was commonly believed he was shorter. His size was always the biggest question mark with him in the NFL so it's understandable he'd want to be listed a bit taller than he was, much like John Starks in the NBA.

I'm about 5'9 myself and I remember walking by Doug in Bills training camp in the 90's. He was wearing cleats and was exactly the same height as me...so I'd have to give him 5'8 1-2 to 5'8 3-4 to be honest.
KitKat said on 10/Dec/18
woah that's crazy, I just googled this dude to check his height and you just added him yesterday
James694 said on 10/Dec/18
In the morning I forget to add at 5'9 7/8ths or 5'9 3/4 later in the day yeah 5'9-5'9 1/4 but who knows. Though it would make sense that's what I'm measured at in the morning and I measure between 5'8 3/4ths and 5'9 1/4 at the end of the day depending on what I do though I may need to check again for myself
RP said on 10/Dec/18
Robby, Doug was 5’9-1/2” ...I’m sure he was just rounding off in that conversation. He was listed at 5’10” by the Buffalo Bills & San Diego Chargers in the NFL. Most likely your typical 5’9-1/2” morning guy, who can dip down to 5’9-1/8” to 5’9-1/4” in the afternoon/evening.
James694 said on 9/Dec/18
He could of been measured at between 5'9 3/4 and 5'9 7/8ths and that's where he might of added it. And might of gotten 5'9 later in the day

I'd agree with Flutie at around 5'9", but here he doesn't look a full 3" shorter than 6' Ronald Reagan in 1984:
Click Here You can see them together throughout the better part of the clip, but you'll probably get a better gauge from 3:50 onwards.
Similarly, he didn't quite look a full 5" shorter than 6'2" peak listed Donald Trump in 1985:
Click Here Click Here Trump's posture doesn't appear to be as good as Flutie's in at least the first pic, but it clearly appears to be less than 5" regardless. I'm not insinuating Flutie is 5'9.5", much less 5'10", but that he could look anywhere from 5'9"-5'10". I'll stick with 5'9" flat to be safe.
Christian 6'5 3/8" said on 8/Dec/18
Pretty small for a quarterback. You'd expect someone his size to be a running back or cornerback.
Rising - 174 cm said on 8/Dec/18
Better picture with Drew Brees:
Click Here There's more than 3" there so 5'9" it is.
Rising - 174 cm said on 8/Dec/18
Thanks, Rob! It was almost common knowledge that even his 5'10" listing was generous. Pretty amazing to be an effective QB at 5'9" when everyone under 6'2" is considered small. Actually, some even thought the 5'9" figure was generous. "Is he tall enough to play in the NFL? He was introduced by the Bills standing 5-foot-9 -- and that's wearing one-inch heeled cowboy boots."
Click Here But I think he was honest with the 5'9" claim. He'd even add a fraction at times such as 5'9 3/4" and 5'9 7/8", but he looked more than just 2" shorter than Drew Brees:

I doubt Flutie would have measured almost 5ft 10...if anything 5ft 8.75 would have been more likely.
Mickie said on 8/Dec/18
Somewhere around 5'9" does seem honest enough for him.
Sandy Cowell said on 8/Dec/18
I've loosely heard of the 'Chicago Bears', not that I had the foggiest idea who or what they were, but I haven't heard of Doug Flutie! He seems honest enough about his height though, so I won't dispute his 5ft9. 🐻

Awesome a quarterback my height lol
