How tall was Dorothy Ford

Dorothy Ford's Height

5ft 11 ½ (181.6 cm)

American actress, best remembered for films such as Jack and the Beanstalk, Here Come the Co-Eds, Love Laughs at Andy Hardy, 3 Godfathers and On Our Merry Way.

In a 1947 article it mentioned how "Instead of being self-conscious about her height, she makes capital of it. By wearing very flat shoes she can tip the beam at 5 feet 11 ½ inches. But she never wears them. She affects nothing but high-heeled slippers, which cause her to tower three inches above six feet."
Dorothy weighs 143 pounds and usually is six feet three inches tall. "But," she whispered, "when I take off my shoes people are surprised. I'm really only five feet, 11 and a half. I always wear three-and-a half inch heels." [working with James Stewart and Fonda] "We were all about the same height. I look normal. I don't look like a freak." [but with Mickey Rooney] "I looked like a side-show attraction. And besides that the studio put lifts on my shoes, making me a couple of inches taller."
My height has never bothered me. In a way it has helped call attention to me, which apparently is so important in Hollywood. While I'm only 5 feet 11½ inches in my stocking feet, my high heels push me up over 6 feet.

Hi @Rob! I know why Dorothy Ford was listed as being 6'2 despite not even being the full 6'0!

In the early 1940s, MGM signed on six very tall actresses as a gimmick. The media dubbed them the "Glamazons". Their names and respectively claimed heights (depending on source) were: Barbara Mace (6'1 or 6'2.5), Dorothy Ford (6'2 but also listed as 6'5.5), Syliva Liggett (6'3 3/8ths), Helena O'Hara (6'0, but also inflated to 6'4-6'5), Susan Paley (6'2.5) and Bunny Waters (6'4 or 6'4.5 but also listed as 6'0).

Here's a photo of all 6 women:

Here's a photo of Dorothy Ford (woman on the right with the dark bikini; listed as 6'2 or 6'5.5) with the alleged 6'4 (though also listed as being 6'0) Bunny Waters to her left/the middle of the three women, and to the left of Bunny Waters in the light floral bikini is the 6'4-6'5 listed (but also described as 6'0) Helen O'Hara:

All three women look almost the exact same height in presumably similar heels and posing, and we know Dorothy Ford only claimed 5'11.5. And since at least three of the 6 "Glamazon" women were only likely 5'11-6'0 range, I doubt the other three were as tall as the media PR reports claimed. Possibly all within the 5'11-6'0 range, maybe one or two of them 6'0.5-6'1 at the absolute most. But, if it's worth noting, Bunny Waters has a daughter named "Kathe Green", who worked as an actress, model and singer. She's listed as being 6'1 (IDK if she's that tall though).

It's odd because being 5'11-6'0 (whether this is the 1940s or 2020s standards) is still very tall for a woman no matter where you go. That would be equivalent to like a 6'5 man!

Here's two different newspaper articles I found whose versions of the articles they've transcribed give varying accounts of the 6 "Glamazon" actresses heights:

In the shot of the 3 women, they are within about an inch of each other. Surprised they didn't photograph all 6 standing together!
In one article with some on the steps, they do give very tall impressions.

@Rob, is this some mistake, but why the ''tallest category'' of women goes from 5'11 1/2 or even 6'0? Is this so rare height for women?. In men's category there's a lot smaller people. I think 6'5-6'6 for women, and 7'0 and over for men

I always knew that Dorothy was not quite the 6'2 stats that modern people have put on her yet she was close to six feet.

I could never figure out of Dorothy was six feet or above since many bios make her nearly 6'3 at times or 6'2. I always thought that she was shorter-yet still tall.

Given her claiming 5'11.5 herself and you believing it, shouldn't she lose her tallest women tag given she's under 6'0? If not then wouldn't that mean you'd have to add the tallest women tag to all the 5'11.5 women currently lacking it on the site?
Editor Rob
She might be 5ft 11.5 at her very lowest and 6ft 3 in heels, probably could look six foot to most people.

I've never heard of female stars having lifts put in their shoes. Why would the studio want to make a woman of six foot even taller?

A very beautiful woman nonetheless.

They always said that Dorothy Ford was either an even six feet or six two or three rarely was she stated as being shorter. A reverse for Hollywood that always depicted taller women as being shorter than they were not taller.
