6ft 7 is quite a few inches of exaggaration.

Rob, it's interesting that Charlton thought he was over 5'9. I'm guessing he wasn't the best height judge, here he is recounting playing against Portugal in the '66 World Cup:

The player who he describes as 6'7-8 was I believe the Portugal centre-forward Jose Torres:

Listed 6'3 and in that picture with Eusebio (who I presume was 5'10 range) doesn't look as though he'd be more than 5" taller.

I know Charlton suffered from Dementia in his latter years, but this was well before his diagnosis. This makes me wonder how tall he thought his own brother Jack was, as he wouldn't have been far off Torres in height!

What of Charlton, Rob? Google has him down as 5'8, but like Paul Scholes I feel he could've been an inch taller that what he's listed:

Looks about an inch between them, which considering Charlton was pushing 70 then, I find it hard to believe he was only 5'8 in his prime. Always seemed a tad taller than Best, in fact judging from that last pic of my previous post, it seemed that Best had shrunk the most despite being the youngest!

In one of those Shoot magazine fact files, where the player answers questions, his height was 5ft 9.5.

5ft 9 is more likely than 5ft 8 peak anyway.

Dalglish or Law, Rob?

I do think they are the two best Scottish players of all time. I understand you're a Celtic fan, does that mean you rate Johnstone as the best?

If Best really was the 5'8.5 you said he claimed, then there is a strong argument for Law being 5'9.5!

I certainly would rank Law the tallest of the Trinity. My own guess would be for their primes:

Law - 176.5cm (5'9.5)
Charlton - 175.3 (5'9)
Best - 174 (5'8.5)

I think Dalglish for me was up there, but Law and Jinky not far off.
There are some photos which do suggest Law having an inch on Best.

@Rob
If it wasn't for the table that I was unaware of, he would've looked taller.

Still noticeably taller than Rob even with the massive camera disadvantage. But whether how much exactly is quite hard to tell.
Editor Rob
Wasn't a great photo because of the big table in the way and having to lean. Certainly wasn't over 5ft 8 when speaking to him.

Modern day footballers are I believe taller than previous generations. The old style 6'2'' centre forward is now longer a giant.

Denis was always listed as 5'9.75" in the sixties. Perhaps he has shrunk a little.

There is an iconic picture from circa 40 years ago when Denis Law and Best were training in the sun. The two men look 2-1/2-3 inches different in height with Law the taller man. Best is most often said to be 5ft 8-9 and Law as a young men was said to be 5ft 9-10.

Saw him today on a plane to the Algarve with his wife and I assume daughter- he is 71 now and has lost a bit of weight compared to the picture above. I wouldn't place him as 5ft 9. I would have thought on the basis of today he was more like 5ft 7. I was quite close to him on plane and am 6ft tall so feel comfortable saying he is no longer 5ft 9

In the 60's he'd have been 5ft10 which was quite tall for players in those days. He was a good header of the ball....like Henrik Larsson a good leap that meant he could out jump taller defenders.

Good player in his day. I met him and Best a few years ago, George looked about 5'7" and quite obviously was in a really bad state. What's with an Arsenal shirt behind him?
