Arch, a lot of these guys looked frighteningly older than they actually were...some even in their mid-30's could pass for 60 year olds. Rubbish lifestyles obviously but I think their dress sense as well came into play and just the general rule of thumb that you were supposed to be a man. Pretty grey area overall - some things from that era we could do with today, others definitely glad to see the back of...smoking and heavy drinking being one


I'm pretty sure I read 6ft2 for this guy somewhere....way off

I've been watching numerous films of his of late from the 70s, love his gruff voice and demeanor. I reckon he would have been perfect playing Dirty Harry. Sometimes I think he can look a little under this, and 5'11.5, but an even 6' looks right with John Vernon.

Kind of shocking that he was only 47 or 48 in his last films. He looks 65 in The Golden Rendezvous. All that drinking and chain smoking I guess. Janssen did look two inches shorter than John Vernon.

I’ve many a time got David Janssen’s name mixed up with David ‘Kid’ Jensen, who used to be a Radio One deejay and also introduce Top of the Pops back in the 70s and 80s. Like actor David, deejay David was tall.

No doubt a strong 6 footer. His wife refers to him as 6'2 in his biography. He wasn't that, but watching reruns of The Fugitive he is described as 6'1 on numerous occasions. I think close to 6'1.

Janssen’s autopsy lists him at 72 inches and 197 lbs. Autopsies are spot-on accurate. He was definitely an even six feet.

I'm seeing quotes of 5'10" here - I'm not seeing that in his work; studio stills if anything indicate he was probably a bit taller than 6'. There's a still of him with a 49 year old Carl Reiner who couldn't have been less than about 6'1" and Janssen looks the same height. Maybe he wore lifts?

Really not sure if he was the full 6 feet. He looked about an inch shorter than Anthony Quinn in Shoes of the Fisherman, but looked more like 5'11 on the Fugitive, next to Jack Lord and Bruce Dern. Steve Forrest had about four inches on him in one episode, but maybe because of posture?

Jannsen was as tall as Jeff Hunter in Hell to Eternity. Hunter was 6'. Hunter was taller by an inch than 5'11" Robert Wagner.

If Jannsen was only 5'10.5" then a lot of actors he appeared with would need to be downgraded.

Jannsen had poor posture which is why you might have thought he was shorter.

I met Mr. Janssen in person in 1978. I am 6'0" even and he was at least an inch shorter than I was. That makes him about 5'10.5".

He always looked taller to me but probably due to "him", what he was and his proportions; I buy 6 foot above all because i remember him next to Steve Forest who towered over him, being 6'3 minimum!
