Dan Rather was roughly 5'11" peak but almost always towered over everyone in early photos because he was wearing cowboy boots (he said on letterman that he always wears them). I assume Rob's height value above is his current height.

He's 85 years old. After 80 year old man loses 2" in height. By 85 years old, the height loss is obviously greater. He's still slightly taller than Geddy Lee today, who is said to be around 5'10" (or WAS):

I passed by him once at the National Archives. 6 ft? My left chestnut.
5' 8" max. I did notice he was wearing cowboy boots. So let's just call it 5' 6" or thereabout.

I met Rather in 2001. I'm 5'8.75" and he was about three inches taller than me. He seemed even taller than that because he was wearing cowboy boots. Considering his age, I'd say that he probably was 6 ft as a younger man.
Rather struck me as having a very big frame, broad-shouldered and barrel-chested, which coupled with his penchant for wearing cowboy boots, might make him seem taller than he actually is.

Dan Rather is still distinguished as a journalist. I was in the National Guard, and I knew of the fact that a company commander could approve alternate service. It was my understanding that one only needed to meet the required MUTA (unit days required). I believe that Rather missed this one. However, still left unresolved was the interview with Bush I. I believe that Rather was the quintessential anti-government activist. I, a Bush supporter, feel that his departure left the American public without a bully-pulpit analyst. I disagree with his acquiescence to accepting the Warren Commission, but hey, I knew he was a journalist who would hold feet to the fire. One or two mistakes does not a disgraced journalist make, in my opinion. Has Russia ever had such a pivotal figure in journalism. I believe not.

This height is very surprising, because I'm watching a report on Rather, right now, and they've shown clips with him and ex-president Nixon, and Saddam Hussein standing right by them, and always in dress shoes, and he looked a noticably taller than BOTH of the men. What is going on? These were not trick camera angles or anything, and spanned a time or what looked like 20 years or more. Perhaps he really was a full 6-feet not too long ago?

I met Tom Brokaw back in the 1970's at NBC and he was exactly my height which is 5'11". I remember being surprised he was that tall since on camera he looked short. As for Dan, he was never over six feet. My guess is he was also 5'11" when he was younger and like so many Texans always wore cowboy boots with high heels. At least the one time I saw him in person he was dressed that way. That was about ten years ago at the Emmys. He looked to be around six feet in those boots. They looked kind of silly since he was wearing a tux at the time.

I met Dan in New York around 1983, and he was definitely 6 feet at that time. A little taller than me.
Editor Rob

I've never seen Rather in person, but at political event in 1996 I was very close to both Tom Brokaw and Peter Jennings as they were covering the event. Brokaw looked to be a little under 6 foot while Jennings was quite tall. 6'2" to 6'3".
I've seen various other news personalities at other events, but most were sitting down. The thing that stuck me about most of them is how thin they are. TV likes pretty people I guess. Judy Woodruff in particular was almost skeletal.
