Rob, I think 5'6" peak was more like it for Durning.
See 34:45, where 5'9" Jack Lemmon had a good three inches on Durning:

Durning actually reminds me a lot in stature of Warren Berlinger and I bet they were both the same height!

5’7” range. Probably more likely once over it than under it.

I don't think your link at the top of page works Rob, it goes to an Amazon book page for me.

I saw Durning on the set of The Return of Elliot Ness, shot in Toronto. 5'7" sounds about right to me for his height. It was a real education watching this being shot. What I saw was shot mostly in two takes, sometimes a third. They had the warm up take and the "nail it" take, then on to the next thing. The principal actors on this were all seasoned pros, from Robert Stack on down, and they knew exactly how to get what they wanted out of a scene.

Cool new feature! I've always thought you should distinguish between current and peak height.

Back in 1979 when he worked on the TV mini-series Studs Lonigan which I was also working on, Durning was about 5'6", maybe even 5'5". All I know is that he was a lot shorter than me. At the wrap party I had been talking with his very pretty daughter who I found to be exactly the type of girl to ask out on a date. She was a lot of fun and quite intelligent and she seemed to really like me. Later, Durning came over to where I was seated, sat down beside me, put his arm around me and whispered in my ear, "So, you like my daughter, eh?" I was sort of taken aback, but answered with a "yes." He then said smiling that charming smile of his, "That's fine. But just remember that she's only 16." And with than he patted me on my back, excused himself and walked back to where he had been sitting. No way did she look that young, but I suppose knowing how girls develop so much earlier he was right. Anyway I didn't pursue her so he was successful.
